Just who was Saint Patrick? Many know him as the figure behind the huge festival of fun and drinking that takes place every on March 17. But look a little more closely and see that there is more to the patron saint of Ireland than meets the eye.
✓ From Slave to Bishop ✓ The Feast at Tara ✓ Ireland’s First Martyr ✓ Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus ✓ A Brief Look ✓ The Death of Saint Patrick And much more!
Saint Patrick will amaze as readers embark on a journey of tough beginnings, holy power, and a story of overcoming adversity to change a nation. Take a look at the saint that devoted his life to bringing Christianity to an entire nation—and succeeded after much difficulty. The saint we know as the reason for a holiday is much more significant than readers know.
Fascinante.
What amazing service has Hourly History have done to the readers by providing such concise and objective details of individuals that changed the course of the history. "Saint Patrick" belongs to that genre.
Given the old Irish names it can be a little bit hard to follow but hang in there. Interesting that Saint Patrick and what we celebrate on At Patrick's day is so far apart.
A nice read to get to know the man behind the day....
Saint Patrick is a read that explores the life and various legends of the man behind the name - from his days as a slave to his escape and gradual conversion upon his return to Ireland.
Each main episode of his life is provided as a chapter with quotes from his life. The book slowly unravels what is known of his younger years, his career choices, his education in that field and all that he faced as a result of his unwavering tenacity before wrapping up in a Conclusion that gives more a nod to his legacy.
My only discontent is there are no pronunciation guides for some of the harder names if you don't quite speak Celtic or Irish.
All in all it was an interesting take and learning about a Christian man whose legacy hinges seemingly on a day dedicated to drinking and bar crawls.
Generally, more is known of the legend of St. Patrick than the actual man. This short biography makes both points with a leaning to the tradition taught through Catholicism and the Orthodox church. Sadly, lacking in concrete evidence, which is admittedly limited, there is a blurring of facts and wise-tales as being the same.
“Letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus “Now you, Coroticus—and your gangsters, rebels all against Christ, now where do you see yourselves?”—Saint Patrick
A short read about the life of Maewyn Succat, albeit one that barely distinguishes the myths from facts attributed to Saint Patrick and his place in Irish folklore, along with traditions that continue to this day.
The life of Saint Patrick from his beginning to his death. His parents did not encourage education or religious beliefs when he was young. Also, as a young boy he was sold into slavery. He went from being a slave to becoming a Bishop.
He taught people about Christ throughout Ireland. He encouraged people to be baptized and to live by the scriptures. Because of the his traveling and teaching as Bishop and later became a as Saint Patrick. There are churches through Ireland named after him. This book mentioned if you want to learn more of his beliefs, his life and teaching study his Coffessio.
St. Patrick Day is celebrated for all the things St. Patrick accomplished during his lifetime. He walked everywhere as he loved the outdoors, loved teaching about Christ and loved the people of Ireland.. He picked up shamrock plant and told the people he was teaching the three leaves stood for the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, thus the Shamrock became a religious symbol. This is another good book by Hourly History.
I really enjoyed this short guide to St. Patrick's life. It has been about 14 years since I read his biography last. Glad to accomplish a fast review in my busy life after such a long time.
The great apostle Saint Patrick converted the whole of Ireland from the wretched hands of paganism to Christianity. Worth a read about this great Saint.
Quite a few of the dates in this appear to be questionable and the whole thing struck me as rather stilted and stodgy. Perhaps it'd appeal more to a Christian rather than a fussy old agnostic such as myself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book on St. Patrick. I learned a lot I never knew about his life, helping to understand why St. Paddy's Day is important. Was an entertaining, interesting read!
A n interesting account of Saint Patrick's life before and after his conversion to Christianity. His work to confirm to Ireland Christianity is detailed as well as his leadership in training future leaders of the Church. I learned a lot by reading this book.
