A lass who cannot speak. A warrior who cannot fight. Can they restore peace to each other?

Rose MacDole cannot speak, and her mother ensures the world sees her as a deaf, daft girl incapable of communication. Completely under the cruel woman’s control, her only escape is to roam the cliffs outside of her castle, looking down at the turbulent, seething water and dreaming of a different life. But when a handsome Highlander visits their castle, he sets off a series of events that will free Rose from her mother’s cage—and propel her into a different sort of danger.

Roddy Grant has a secret. A warrior in a clan renowned for its prowess on the battlefield, he struggles with a profound fear of death. Grappling with this fear that threatens to unman him, Roddy nonetheless continues to work with the Band of Cousins, trying to eliminate an evil network that trades in human lives. On a scouting mission for the group, he finds himself at a secluded castle on the coast, where he meets a bonny lass who cannot speak.

Rose steals a piece of Roddy’s soul, and when he discovers she may be entangled with the very network he and his cousins seek to destroy, he will do anything to save her—even face his worst fear.

I was captured on the first page and it held me to the end. An emotional story that portrays the essence of living with a disability and the struggle to be normal.
When warrior Roddy Grant first saw her, it appeared she was about to jump off a cliff! Rose MacDole was wandering the cliffs, glad to be alone when she heard him call to her so she ran back to the castle. Even since her father passed, her mother had presented her to everyone as deaf and dumb. But Rose could hear perfectly, she just could not talk.
Roddy was part of The Band of Cousins who rescued children from the sex trade and they were in the area to see what they could find. But as he meets Rose, he is stunned by her beauty and feels sad she cannot hear or speak. He has his own struggles that almost take him down.
Keira Montclair has a gift of bringing the characters and surroundings alive and makes you feel tied to the characters. There were so many twist and turns that it kept me on my up late at night to finish! This tale that will tug at your heart and you cannot help but love Roddy and Rose!! Although part of a series this can be read as a standalone. But as I always say, why would you want to miss the other books in this series?

I really liked Roddy and Rose. This was a sweet story while also moving along the common plot throughout the series. CW for trauma and physical abuse/torture. It was also nice to mix it up and see a warrior that's struggling with death.

Didn’t finish after page 33. The premise was interesting. I like unique characters so I was interested to read about this situation with a girl who couldn’t speak and who was kept basically a prisoner by her mom.

But I hate insta lust/love. I wish books came with a warning to tell us if the romance was instant or slower burn. I’d guess like 90% of romance novels are insta love and I’d just love for something more unique. Because there’s a million ways to show two characters falling in love but there’s only one way to show insta love. it just seems like the laziest way to write a romance and it’s unoriginal. When Roddy first sees rose he talks in depth about her beauty. He tells his friends how beautiful she is. It just seems so shallow and that the only reason he’s so invested in her is because of looks. Which yeah obviously they should be attracted to one another, but when the huge focus is on looks, it just feels hollow.

Also they kiss instantly. And completely out of nowhere. They have known eachother for a total of maybe 5 minutes and they kiss. It was extremely bizarre and the most unromantic thing I could imagine. No build up, no tension, nothing. Why are we jumping so many steps? What is the rush? what is the point? If this book wasn’t labeled as a romance then I wouldn’t be as annoyed. But if you are going to label it a romance then I want romance.

Also these men are searching for human trafficking schemes. They are just wandering around it seems looking for clues to find the bad things happening. But the reason that two of the places two of the men want to investigate is because they just “have a bad feeling” about these places. Their suspicions are based on nothing but a feeling. Roddy goes out to this castle where rose is and after being there for like 10 minutes he reports back saying he has a feeling something is going on there. The author gives No other explanation. And his partner shares the same exact thing about another place he’s gone to. Again it just seems lazy. Like dig a little deeper and give real reasons why these men are investigating the places they are going. Show them noticing clues that raise red flags. or have someone give them a tip they are following. It just isn’t realistic to have men wandering around trying to fight crime and just have them get “feelings” that something is going on. Yes you can get a feeling that things are off, but you need something to give you that feeling. Like have him notice a secret tunnel system in the castle, or see some evidence of a ship docking in a place that ships wouldn’t normally be. Things that could be explained but when you put everything together it gives you that “feeling” that something could be going on. I just needed more from the author. Deeper thought and a story that’s woven together layer by layer and well thought out.

Rose MacDole can’t speak
Roddy is a warrior fearful of death non the less they are still looking for the one trading

The Highlands of Scotland
Autumn, 1284’

The band of cousins are on a mission to find and locate where human trafficking abduction is taking place. Where they are trading children for sexual favors.

Rose MacDole loves wondering the cliffs as this was her only time to be alone with her own thoughts. It also makes he feel close to her deceased father. Roddy Grant first sees Rose and comes to the wrong assumption that she might be suicidal. He actually frightens Rose and she runs back to the castle. Then when he comes to the castle and introduces himself as the good honest warrior he is things start to change. Rose even opens up to him that her mother lies about her being a deaf mute. They share their first kiss which unknown to them her overbearing mothers sees!

From that point on her monster mother decides to punish Rose, by sending her to a convent to possibly become a nun. Her mother is very wicked and gives her wrong information about her monthly cycles. Claiming the bleeding is a punishment from God for her wicked behavior. This mother is a piece of work and very abusive mentally and physically. She even threatens the clergy at the Abbey that Rose is to remain in isolation. All trays sent to her rooms, no education nor any friends. There is also a paranormal element in this book, an owl is like her familiar, protector which I thought was brilliant.

The epilogue was magnificent and I can’t wait for Daniel and Constance book next! Another fast paced, riveting, adventure, filled with mystery, suspense, betrayal, treachery, abduction, murder, abuse, protection and love. Of course always fun to see some of our favorite Clan Grant and Ramsay characters like a family reunion.

I highly recommend this book you can read as a stand alone or series order.

This is a good Highlander romance, and a good addition to the Band of Cousins series. It can be read standalone, but will be much better if you read the Clan Grant series and Highland Clan series first. That is because there are many, many characters in this story, most of whom were introduced in one of the other two series.

This one gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

I liked Roddy, and thought he was good for Rose. From the first time he saw her, he immediately decided that helping her was his top priority -- and I liked that.

*** Possible Spoilers Follow ***

I liked Rose, and understood how her past trauma drove her behavior. What her mother did to her was awful, so much so that she had blocked it from her memory. I did think, though, that her recovery from her terrible trauma was too sudden. She experienced extreme violence and pain, so it would have been very difficult for her when she remembered it. Survivors of violence usually take many years to recover, and some never completely recover.

*** End of Spoilers ***

I was glad that Roddy and Rose found their HEA -- they were good together, and she definitely needed someone to help her and be in her corner.

I also liked most of the other characters, especially Rose's friend Constance. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Speak Nothing Hear Nothing

Her life of silence was a life of loneliness and the sorrow of losing her beloved sire left her with no hope of anything more. Not allowed any association with the outside world Rose feared men. Her mother convinced her she was a person of sin. Her monthly curse was because she kissed a man and the blood was proof of that sin. She was locked up in an Abby and was not allowed any connection with anyone at all. Her mother's hate took the form of isolating her from human companionship of any sort.
Roddy's heart was touched by this beautiful girl that had no way of communicating and he felt the need to help her. Her mother blocked him at every turn, but the attraction that was developing between them would not be stopped.
Roddy and his cousins were in the area searching for the group that was kidnapping and selling young girls and this was a prime location. Rose had clues that pinpointed the location and they discovered that someone at the Abby was part of the ring. The Clan Grant, Roddy and Rose working together saved 8 more girls from being sold into slavery.
With hope restored in her life and confidence she had gained thanks to her friend Constance and Roddy, Rose gained the courage she needed to fight for herself and even though she always had her hearing she realized she could speak and was able to save her life when she had to. Thanks to her hero and friend she was whole for the 1st time since she lost her Dad and finding love made her life complete.

Highland Lies by Keira Montclair
The Band of Cousins Series Book Four
Rodric “Roddy” Grant is a nephew of the great Alexander Grant, Laird of Clan Grant, and yet, here he is having nightmares and fearing he is no longer worthy to be a Grant warrior. This sends him to the past to find out what's causing his nightmares. Especially since he's met the beautiful, although mute, Rose.

Rose MacDole has learned to be a dutiful daughter to her one living parent. Her mother's moods change like the weather. And how she misses her father. She'd known he loved her. Her mother, not so much.

When the Band of Cousins are led to Castle MacDole and Sona Abbey, Roddy and Connor both have an uneasy feeling. When things turn...mystical...they know trouble is coming. I love all the Grant and Ramsay stories in all the series. Keira Montclair does a fantastic job of bringing characters back into the story again...even if for short visits...and I really enjoy that too.

A love story of Roddy Grant and Rose MacDole Her dad had died a few years ago but her mom was still alive. Rose could not hear or speak. She was at a definite disadvantage. Her mother was quite cruel, one instance is where she told Rose since she had kissed a boy she would bleed until God forgave her. Another was when she took Rose to a Convent and told her she would stay there until she stopped.
Roddy was a cousin and he and some of his other cousins were looking into girls disappearing. They had heard the girls had been sold into slavery or? He saw Rose the first time standing on the cliffs by her castle. She had run from him because her mother had told her to. She had been isolated all her life because of the roughness of the sea and that is what her mom wanted.
I was unable to put this book down. It was so good and kept my attention. It was well written, fast-moving and a good mix of twists and turns. The characters were strong and endearing. An all-around excellent Novel.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed this.

I am currently halfway through Band of Cousins. I have read Clan Grant, The Highland Clan, The Soulmate Chronicles, and Reforming the Duke.
I find myself carrying my tablet with me for any chance to read. I'm so impressed with your ability to have all of these characters and places brought together and continue on for decades. I find you have great talent to tie up the end the future to keep me excited about the next chapter and book.
I log all of my books because I read so much. I'm thankful to have found the series when complete. I hate waiting any length of for my next book.
I don't do book reviews often or lightly.
Love these books and I'd be intrested in knowing who the real author is.
By the way I'm of the "mature generation " Haha that means I'm great grandma Sparkles. Happy St.Patricks day.

Another wonderful book

5 stars, as always with this author, I. her stories of these wonderful Huge CLans, Families, Friends, that I have grown to love, and have made them all mine. They are the Strongest,Loyal, kindest, talented, the best at everything they do. They are so close, and so good I love all of them. The story has everything, action, adventure, secrets, with a little Romance, just a bit of spice. I can’t say enough good about this book, as all of her books. Highly recommend this as I do all of her books. Best start at first of a series, get to know everyone. You can’t help but fall In love. But I don’t want to leave out all the excitement you live in with them, till HEA end. I can’t wIt for next book.

Just absolutely LOVE Clan Grant series

If you haven’t read any of the books in this massive series; I’d have to ask, “why the heck NOT?!” Seriously, this is a wonderful “series”, full of adventure, warmth, love, and a bit of the paranormal. This book dealt with Roddy & Rose. Rose is a beautiful young lady, who happens to be mute. Roddy is one of the younger members of the “2nd generation” of Clan Grant. This book is wonderful-not many sexy-times, so if that’s all you’re looking for you may be disappointed. I can’t imagine being disappointed with this book; but, to each their own. In a way I wish Rose’s “disability” did not resolve; how cool would it be for her to have a “service owl?!” 😜

Great book love it!

The cousins are continuing to search for the individuals that are involved in the kidnapping and selling of lassie and lads. Rose can't talk and her mother tells people that she can't talk or hear nothing. Robbie is a warrior having trouble being able to draw his sword and fight. They meet when Robbie and Conner search the area for signs for channel. Robbie and Rose discovery why they are unable to do things they believe and realize love has set them free. This story will make you laugh and cry and feel the love between the families and the individuals.

A really exciting story.
I can hardly think of a more evil gut wrenching villain.
The story has a most intriguing beginning where Rose meets Roddy and their attraction takes us a quite a journey to get to their HEA.
Lots of emotional tragedies in this story. Some very disturbing situations and the most evil villain.
the H and h are terrific and share a wonderful love story. Not much heat but a lot of attraction.
My favorite part is with the magical animals. What a treat they are.
Quite a climatic epilogue.
A wonderful story that continues the Band Of Cousin's search for the child abductors. Their are getting closer to finding who the bad guy is.

Another great book from Keira. The Band of Cousins are out to rescue children who taken for sex slavery and they are trying to save as many as possible. Roddy was with his cousin Connor to check around an area where Roddy saw this girl on a rocky cliff and he thought she was going to jump but he couldn't catch her before she disappeared. Rose was kept in hiding by her mother because she was telling everyone she was a deaf mute. There is a lot going on in this book with secrets, births and lots of happiness.

Grand Story

Roddy and Rose' s story flowed exceptionally well. These two characters were dealing with difficult trials. Roddy needed to overcome something which was paralyzing for him. He is a Grant Warrior.

Rose could not speak and she had to deal with her mother.

Destiny intervenes and creates a wonderful journey for these two.

What I loved most of all was the spectacular epilogue. I won't give any spoilers away, but this warmed my heart so much...I shed a tear of happiness and I look forward to the future! Thank you Keira Montclair...It was brilliant!

The story began on a somber note, with Rose's mother treating her cruelly, keeping her isolated, and spreading lies that Rose was deaf, dumb, and stupid. The only truth was that Rose couldn't speak. When Roddy met Rose, he was fascinated by her and didn’t mind her inability to talk; they discovered other ways to communicate.

Rose and Roddy made a fantastic pair and shared a beautiful love story. The owl who became Rose's protector and saved her on several occasions was a delightful touch.

I felt heartbroken when I first met Rose, but I was so happy for her by the end.

I have loved the Grant/Ramsay Clans from the beginning & the Bank of Cousins is leading the next generation in to wonderful stories. This book was so touching, emotional, noble & the addition of Rose & Roddy as a couple is lovely. Grant heir. The epilogue was the best ever (I won't tell - you need to read it) & I loved the updates on past beloved characters. You will love this series & this book is so outstanding - a great book by a great author, Keira Montclair!

What an emotional story!!!

Just as any other highland story. This book takes you on a journey through Scotland's Highlands where Clan Grant is the fiercest yet most honorable worrier's that ever lived. The best part of this book was the end. After Roddy and Rose's story Alex Grant had the epilogue. I would love a short story of Alex and Maddie after all these years and generations born. They will always be my favorite Grants.

Loved the continuing store of the Band of Cousins. Roddy sees a lass near the cliffs and believes she is going to jump. He chases after her. When he finds out she can not speak or hear it moves him. He then learns she can actually hear! Roddy and Connor sense something is going on at the Abbey and a secret Abbey being built. They band together to save Rose and the lasses. A wonderful store with a great epilogue!

I bought the book because I enjoy stories of " disabled" people in romances. I have to say, this novel was disappointing. The bad mother seemed like a cartoon cut out of a very evil person. And the plot seemed to jump all over the place. The novel seemed to me it was written very quickly and not a lot of effort went into the writing of it. The epilogue was the best part of the book. ( I was hoping for a different outcome of the sex of the babies.)

Continuing the fabulous story od Alexander Drummond

Ive enjoyed following this family thru their journeys and story lines. My favorite part of this story was again the cousins banding together in their belief in connections. The Owls addition to the magic was over the top good. The strength of the family is inspiring.
I would recommend anyone who love the historical past and family trees to pick up the first book and enjoy hours of facination and love.

They must find the stolen lasses before it’s to late

Can the ‘band of cousins’ find the stolen lasses before they are sold? It is know that young women, young lads and lasses are stolen or given up by their parents. Instead of going to a better life they’re sold across the water. The king wants this terrible practice stopped. The Clan Grant, the largest clan, is working to find the men orchestrating this travesty.

Excellent

I liked the interaction with Rose and the owl, was cute. The scene in the ship when she takes on the men to fight wasn't believable but was fun to read. The mother was a horrible person and only looks out for herself. Overall I really liked this book and looking forward to the next.

Wow. What wonderful story. Keira has a talent to give us a love story combined with true to date drama. This one was touching. Into the next book. Happy Reading!!
