Guarding her heart was never part of the contract...

Annie Bellfield is walking her dog early one morning when, from out of nowhere, a gorgeous stranger approaches her and starts to walk with her. The captivating woman's name is Nova, and Annie finds her intensely attractive...

Until Nova pushes her into a black van with no windows.

Nova swears it isn't a kidnapping—that she's in charge of keeping Annie safe from someone or something she can't tell Annie about. Nova is frustrating, obtuse and cocky, but as Annie and Nova go on the run from this untold danger, Annie finds herself falling head over heels for her bodyguard.

Mysteries, family secrets, werewolves and passionate romance combine...what could possibly go wrong?

After reading The Wolf Diaries and being hesitant to read another book by Essex, it seems I may have to pass on this author in general. Her writing style just doesn't do it for me.

There was relatively very little that happened in this book despite the blurb. I was expecting a lot more action but instead was once again treated to the lengthy inner ramblings of Annie as she fussed over her dog and stared longingly at Nova.

Plot wise this feels like a jigsaw puzzle of various themes that don't quite fit. The pieces altogether create a clear picture but their edges don't match. For instance what was the purpose of Jax being the 'thing' she is?

Oh well no point wondering about it now, on to my next read! Overall rating is 2,25*

Good read

It’s a good read but it’s very similar to Bridget’s other novel The Protector only it’s werewolves protecting a human rather than a vampire, there is a surprise in it I didn’t see coming I won’t spoil it.A typical well written book but too similar to the previous book hence only 4*

“The Bodyguard” is narrated by Marina Barrett, and as usual, the narration is a solid 5* performance. Also as usual, Essex’s lush descriptive writing really brings depth to the story.

Ahh…but the story. Not my favorite of her books. MC Human Annie is kidnapped by MC Nova, and spends the next few months falling for Nova and occasionally trying to escape. Each time she tries to escape she finds herself in a worse predicament.

MC Annie maybe human, but she grew up around werewolves and its’t frightened of them or of vampires. I think she should be afraid of the ones trying to capture and perhaps kill her.

So, why did Nova kidnap her and why is she guarding her? It’s all made clear in the end, but after plodding along for most of the book with typical Essex “I’m falling for her; I can’t fall for her” thinking from both MCs, the actual explanation for the kidnapping and many other activities felt rushed.

So, 5* for the narration, 4* for the quality writing, but only 2* for the story; I rate “The Bodyguard” 4* overall.

She Can Guard Me ANYTIME!
What an amazing tale about a woman who has a tail lol! This fantastic story features werewolves, vampires, humans and even a ghost. Loveable, perky Annie is happily living a peaceful, quiet life until shes not. Hot as sin, strong and silent type Nova is so sexy hot and yes, sometimes furry. Their paths cross when Nova kidnaps Annie and her cute little dog Sunny, well sort of… There is a secret that Nova must protect Annie from, but Annie has a secret of her own and won’t be intimidated. These two strong and stubborn women are drawn together and face danger and their personal demons head on. This is a VERY well written and fascinating drama, positively YUMMY!! It was impossible to put down once I started reading and it kept my attention all the way through. I couldn’t read fast enough, it was so good and I didn’t want it to end. Forgive me for rushing off, I am going to find another of Ms Essex’s books ASAP!

I read many werewolf books and this one was light. I liked the plot, and characters but it took a bit to keep my attention to reading.
It is cute and quick read.

Amazing women

This was refreshingly different than many urban fantasy books. Not only is this romance between amazing women but it is a bit mysterious too. Having Annie tell the story worked well for me. There was just enough twists to keep me interested even though much of the story took place at the vampire church so there wasn't a lot of action. It would have been interesting to get other character's perspectives.

I generally like Essex's work but this was a little too much on the feeling and thinking and light on plot. I kept reading, waiting for something to happen, which finally did in the last couple of chapters. A plus was that some puzzles were finally revealed or solved. I will still read her stories but I probably won't reread this one.

The pencil business is cutthroat...

The Heroine: Annie is annoying. I think she was supposed to come across as this quirky, happy, sunny woman, but she comes across as childish and annoying. When we first meet her she's walking her chubby dog. Her dog is chubby because she gave her too many treats, and the vet told her to walk the dog every day. Annie is proud of taking her vet seriously, yet mentally seems resentful of having to walk Sunny every day (italics from the text, not mine.) Later, she sees a Hot Woman who then tells her that she's being kidnapped. Annie thinks it is some kind of surprise first date. Annie is Too Stupid To Live. Later, Annie tries to stand up for herself but she seems less Strong Independent Woman and more Petulant Five Year Old Demanding to Be Treated Like A Big Girl.

The Love Interest: Nova is Hot. Hot, hot, hot. So Hot that Annie allowed herself to literally be led into the van to be kidnapped. We are reminded of just how Hot Nova is nearly every paragraph. This is pretty much all Nova has going for her, except when she gets all "wolf" and predatory.

The Plot: The plot makes no real sense. There's a kidnapping and then werewolves, and then ghosts and vampires and then it is revealed to have all been for what I think is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. I think this was supposed to come off as cute but instead I was literally in tears from laughing so hard at how stupid it was.
The love story didn't work at all. Maybe it was because the characters were so poorly written that I didn't care if they ended up together? And the sex scenes were really, really bad. Annie calls them Hot, but they were not. At all.

The werewolves themselves. Okay, so these "werewolves" can change at will and are not affected by the moon. That is not a werewolf! That is a shapeshifter that turns into a wolf! Taking away the most fundamental element of what a werewolf is...That's like having vampires that do not need to drink blood to survive, or mermaids that don't have tails.

Also, the core of the entire plot was problematic. Nova claims it wasn't a kidnapping, but it really was. This kind of plot has been called problematic in m/f romances, but apparently it is okay in queer romances? Because...representation? Because it evens things out? No. It is still highly problematic.

The Writing The author broke the first rule of writing by telling more than showing. We are told practically everything about this world. Even after the few times that we are shown something, we are then told it again in Annie's internal dialogue. That got really repetitive, fast.

Paper-thin plot perforated with holes and lazy writing. I skimmed a lot.

There was much to dislike and little to like. This book actually kept me away from my kindle library and I only realized that in hindsight. So unexciting was it that my perception of what entertainment lay within the other books was marred. I didn’t “feel” like reading. I should’ve been more alert. I should’ve dropped this book. I’m not sure why I didn’t. Hm, were I to guess, maybe I was hoping for a revelation as to why Oh! Ok let’s get to it. But then I might as well list my grievances with it.

- Nauseous repetitions of the protagonist’s attraction to the big bad wolf. The effect of telling us over and over and over that Protagonist was attracted and found the woman hot and all, it was extremely tedious.
- And this, ugh, this... The nonsensical secret-keeping that ended up being absolutely unjustified (that was the big reveal? The truth that never was to be disclosed to the protagonist in order to keep her safe?! That it was her sister orchestrating the “abduction”?!? Why, oh why would you fucking bother to call it an abduction and risk your protégée running from your proffered protection?! No, rather, why would you stoop to weaving such a cheap scenario for the sake of... of... making things interesting, I suppose? Because this story would otherwise be dead dull?) I’m not even gonna bother putting a spoiler tag because it was glaringly obvious. Only, I was hoping there were more factors in play, but the author clearly did not think the story through.
- Jax. Terrible handling of the character and, as well, nonexistent (read: cheap) justification as to her presence/role in the story. It was a disservice to use her and dispose of her the way she was treated by the pen.

Why am I wasting more time on this?

I certainly will be much, much more wary of books from this author from now on.

Compelling storytelling

“We don't know when we will die, so we do our best to live while we're alive. At least...we try.”

“If we do not leave this world better for having been in it...then what have we done with the gifts we've been given?”

“Because everyone should do their best to be kind, always.“ “No one knows what anyone else is going through, what their story is. I believe, deeply, that most of us are trying the best we can to get through this life. And that we should extend the same sympathy to a stranger that we would give to someone we love with all our heart.”

“ʼI don't think anyone should be blamed for loving someone else,ʼ I said simply, shaking my head. ʼEver.ʼ”

This is a masterful combination of a second chances, life after death romance story enmeshed in a paranormal mystery thriller, expertly evoking a deeper connection to the characters & personal investment into the narrative & outcome into a impassioned experience.

A love story that didn't even need explicitly specified sex scenes to indicate & invoke the roiling passion & intensity between Nova & Annie— & the adoring devotion with Jax. Instead, Essex relied on poetically effervescent words for emotions instead of physical imagery to drive the electricity of their love for each other.

“Attraction only gets you so far in this world. Attraction only works for so long, and if you haven't got heart, if you haven't got an enormous heart, a wild spirit, it's meaningless.”

“My body, my heart, pulled toward this woman who—up until this morning—had been a perfect stranger to me. She'd taken me, yes, but she promised me that it was because she wanted to keep me safe.
And, here and now...I knew she meant it.
She would keep me safe at any cost.”

Thrilling!

What neither of them expected was the undeniable attraction. Both fight this unexpected passion that ignites between them. Both will risk their lives to save each other but from whom or what? Together they might be strong enough to defeat the enemy. The Bodyguard is an intense, hot, mysterious and surprising story with a lot of interesting characters, with many twist and turns and a sensational ending. As always, Bridget Essex never disappoints. Give this a try and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

I'd give it a four because the plot and story itself was well done and the characters were well done, but nothing grabbed me and made me go, "wow, that was crazy."
It was no doubt a great read, not quite good enough to be a 5-star rating. I still had a lot of fun reading it and the way our MC described Sunny's (her dog)facial features was as if Sunny were a person. I'd even read it a second time as I'ms sure their were several parts I didn't pick up on initially.

Winner!

Bridget Essex has penned another amazing and very well written paranormal lesbian romance. Her characters are well developed and leap from the pages and right into your heart, as does the compelling storytelling of the author, weaving a complex tale that keeps the reader engaged completely. This book is an excellent candidate for the must read list of everyone who loves lesfic.

The plot, or rather, paper thin plot, was grating on my nerves for much of the story. It had much promise but it went downhill rather rapidly for me so I ended up skimming through most of the story and gave up at the 72% mark.

The author has written far better stories which I've read and enjoyed but this book was far from that. The dialogue was generally okay but the plot was just not right for me.

Sad

This whole thing was just infuriating to read for me. Like why did literal the whole time did everyone insist on hiding the truth from Annie even though it was SO OBVIOUS! like I read maybe a chapter of the book and realized her sister had set the whole thing up! Plus why introduce so many characters if you won't spend the time for an kind of development about them.

I love werewolves, vampires, and ghost. This book has all three. The story of Nova and Annie falling in love was filled with mystery, secrets, passion, and hiding from a murderer. I was so sad that Jax was dead. It definitely took me by surprise when it was revealed, but I was so happy she stuck around and saved Annie and Nova.

“In life, we've only got this moment, Annie. This is the only thing we've been assured. So do the best you can while you're in it. That's all you can do.” (Bridget Essex. The Bodyguard, 2018).

Humans and Werewolves and Vampires oh my.... nice HEA, though it might have been nice to have a little more clarification at the end. A meet-up with Annie and here sister and Nora would also have been a fun addition.

A sweet and easy story mixed with some passion, lust, and heartache. I won't give too much away because I understand the frustration of spoilers.

*Author to reader, no spoilers! Author to Author, I feel your pain*

Annie, the protagonist, was the narrator, and she had a lot to say, but I can't blame her. My head would be a swirling mess if I was kidnapped without being given a reason, too. Annie was a fighter, though, especially where her little dog was concerned. Nova was a tall drink of YUM! What can I say? I have a weakness for a woman in a suit. Nova was hired to protect Annie at all costs, but she wasn't expecting to fall for her stubborn damsel. I found myself giggling sometimes. There was a side character who I wasn't expecting who totally threw me for a loop. I fell utterly and irrevocably in love with Jax. I fell even harder when I had learned the truth about Jax. Oh, Ms. Essex, you shattered my heart and made water goblets fall down my face. Selfishly, I want Ms. Essex to write a story based on Jax. Even now, as I write about Jax, my heart is thudding double time.

Shapeshifters, Vampires, love, and loss, this story will have you feeling all the feels.
