a deluxe compilation of hans christian andersen fairytales, with illustrations by kuri huang. i like her style: cartoonish but elegant, with lavish use of teardrops, diamonds, and rosettes to keep paintings from being too subdued. some of my favorites from this collection:

all the classics are included along with a few lesser-known tales (favorites italicized): the little mermaid, the princess and the pea, the wild swans, the ugly duckling, the little match girl, the tinder box, the metal pig, the steadfast tin soldier, the buckwheat, the old street lamp, the money pig, what the old man does is always right, the shadow, the emperor’s new clothes, the storks, clumsy hans, little ida’s flowers, the teapot, she was good for nothing, the flying trunk, the nightingale, the swineherd, thumbelina, the snow queen, the flea and the professor, the penman, little claus and big claus, the gardener and the noble family, the snail and the rosebush, the red shoes, luck may lie in a pin, the storm shifts the signboards, kept secret but not forgotten, children’s prattle, and the elder-tree mother.
