A forensic psychologist fights a mental war against two serial killers in this disturbing thriller from Mike Omer, Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author of A Killer’s Mind.
An online video of a girl clawing at the ceiling of her own grave could be the worst thing FBI forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley has ever seen. Perhaps even more disturbing is the implication of the video’s title: “Experiment Number One.”
Zoe and her partner, Special Agent Tatum Gray, work as fast as they can to find the monster behind the shocking video, but soon another one shows up online, and another girl turns up dead. Meanwhile, a different murderer is on Zoe’s mind. Rod Glover has been tormenting her since childhood, and his latest attack is a threatening photo of himself with Zoe’s sister. As Glover’s threats creep toward action, Zoe’s torn between family and duty.
Zoe must think fast to prevent another murder. With her own family’s safety on the line, Zoe feels she’s never been in more danger. And while she’s always known her job could send her to an early grave, she always assumed she’d be dead first.

1.5 Stars — I just finished “In the Darkness” Mike Omer’s second Zoe Bentley book. I really enjoyed the first book in the series, “A Killer’s Mind” so I was hoping that this book would be just as good,if not better, than the first book ... it wasn’t. In fact the word preposterous comes to mind as I think back at all the contrived twists and turns the author chose to include in this book. “In the Darkness” once again follows Zoe Bentley a behavior analyst for the FBI and her partner, Tatum Gray, an FBI agent as they attempt to stop a serial killer in Texas who goes by the unoriginal moniker of “The Digging Killer”. His claim to fame is that he buries his victims alive until they suffocate. Simultaneous to this, the story also follows Zoe’s sister who is being stalked by a different serial killer in Virginia. Both plots are ridiculous and made me feel like the author was rewriting the first novel but with a less realistic villain than the first book. Team the dueling ridiculous storylines with the fact that both Tatum and Bentley would have to be more clairvoyant than the Amazing Kreskin to connect the so called clues that allow them to solve or get out of multiple situations. Mix these problems with phony dialogue and a stereotypical reporter who travels across the country to cover this case in its early stages to make things more difficult for the main characters and you have the recipe for a bad novel. I know I am in the minority on this one but I was definitely my least favorite book of the year.
LolSometimes detective mysteries and FBI thrillers tell the same story over and over with different names for their characters. This is not the case with "In The Darkness" by Mike Omer. I found this novel to be exciting and very well written and while I have read many good thrillers, I have not felt excitement when reading them and now I have become a real fan of Mike Omer!
The story mainly takes place in Texas and revolves around Zoe Bentley who works for the FBI as a profiler psychologist and Special Agent Tatum Gray also working in the BAU (Behaviour Assessment Unit). They are called into help in a case of a young woman who is buried alive and her abductor has downloaded this horrific scene to the internet to attract attention from viewers. Many people are not taking the live broadcast seriously and are claiming the disturbing video is a prank. The police department and the FBI must quickly assess the situation before it becomes too late to save the buried girl in the event that she really is a victim of a monster who is just getting started in making a name for himself.
This book was so well-written and had all the elements of suspense, mystery, drama, and excitement. I also enjoyed the fact that I didn't know the identity of the villain until the end of the book and I also just bought the first book in the series because this was such a great read for me. I loved this story and I highly recommend to other readers. I have given this book 5 Exciting 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!
I want to thank the publisher Thomas & Mercer and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this terrific novel!
In To The Darkness by Mike Omer is the second book in the Zoe Bentley series and it certainly continues to get better, you start to see the characters grow and rub along together greatly. Grandad Marvin, psycho cat freckles and Timothy the fish are the comedy trio that takes the edge off the darkness in this series( they definitely give you a good giggle🤣) There's still the killer from Zoe's childhood lingering in the shadows of this story but it's just enough to keep you wondering when his time up. The main killer to this story is definitely the twisted kind(aren't they always??) Who gets off burying women alive. The killer when caught is not the person you expected there's no clues at all,if you're claustrophobic and hate the darkness I would get yourself mentally prepared.😲 I would definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to book 3 📖
Well, Zoe does enjoy her food and music in this one. That's for sure.
Marvin... hmmm... he grows on me. One of the best characters in here. Q: She never understood people’s urge to say, “I told you so.” It was like taking pride in the fact that you weren’t convincing enough. (c) Q: “Ungh!” “Agggggh!” They were synchronized now, sounding like a couple engaged in the world’s most uncomfortable and unpleasant sex act. The girl on the treadmill next to Andrea stopped running and left, a disgusted look on her face. (c) Q: “Suspicious? It’s a fishbowl.” Marvin shook his head. “Are you going to arrest the fish?” (c) Q: “If I’m going to spend the night here, I can’t leave the fish with the cat. It won’t end well for one of them. So it was either bringing the fish or the cat. And the fish didn’t give as much resistance.” (c) Q: The fish seemed to be eyeing the gun, as if it contemplated grabbing it. A beer bottle stood in the middle of his fishbowl, and it swam twice around it, then stopped in front of the gun again. (c) Q: ... he’s acting like a loon. He’s probably in shock.” “No, that’s his regular behavior,” (c)
Mike Omer is back with another impactful thriller that presents another ruthless serial killer out for some twisted revenge. Dr. Zoe Bentley is a star within the FBI’s Behavioural Analyst Unit (BAU), using her skills to profile some of the country’s worst killers. Bentley is still coming to terms with the knowledge that an acquaintance is on the loose, a serial killer in his own right. Zoe’s sister, Andrea, appears to be a target, which leaves everyone feeling a little less than safe. When Bentley and her partner, Agent Tatum Gray, receive word that there appears to be a sick killer down in Texas, they take a particular interest. Someone using the online handle ‘Schrodinger’ has posted an extended video of burying a woman alive, which includes streams of both the grave digging and inside the makeshift coffin. When asked by the San Angelo PD to assist with this, Bentley and Gray fly across the country, though Andrea’s safety remains a concern. When they arrive, Bentley and Gray scour the crime scene photos and posted video for clues, but things are slow going. When another woman goes missing, Bentley tries to better understand the psychological aspects of the crime. She learns as much as she can about the famous Schrödinger Box thought experiment, including the nuances of what is supposed to be inside the box itself. When another link appears, it would seem that things are ramping up at an unexpected rate. Bentley and Gray must work quickly to solve this case and stop the disappearances. Meanwhile, Andrea is haunted by the constant fear that she will be attacked, which only makes her all the more paranoid. Things on both fronts soon take a turn for the worse, leaving the reader to pay close attention during the latter chapters of the book. Omer has developed another stunning novel that takes the reader into the mind of someone divorced from reality. Recommended for those who love a good psychological mystery that keeps the mind racing throughout.
I thoroughly enjoyed Omer’s debut novel in this series, as it pulled me in from the early chapters and would not let go. This was another wonderfully crafted piece that mixes sadistic killings with a psychological angle. Zoe Bentley proves yet again to be a wonderful character, whose attention to detail works wonders in her work life. Wanting to get to the core of those whose minds she seeks to analyse, Zoe does all in her power to better understand those who wreak havoc. All the while, she must battle with the knowledge that her sister, Andrea, remains a potential target. With a narrative offering parallel advancement of the plots, the reader is able to see the dedication that Zoe possesses. Other characters offer wonderful flavours to the story and complement the narrative effectively. Omer is able to craft wonderful individuals to keep the story fresh and the reader fully engaged. The story is strong and takes the reader into the depths of a killer’s mind, which also serves to entertain throughout. With short chapters, the pages seem to flow by without much effort, matched with a strong story and insightful perspectives. Kudos, Mr. Omer, for another wonderful novel. I know you have other series and I may have to give them a read through before long.
Update: автор активно співпрацює з країною-терористом, так що до побачення and kiss my a$$
It took me an absolute age to read this purely because I had study material to read also which had to take priority.... but that doesn’t take anything away from how good this was. I’ve already pre-ordered the Zoe Bentley #3 book in the series, being released in 2020. Can’t wait! A good, solid and well written crime fiction book for fans of crime thrillers everywhere 👍🏼

Gosh the story rocked along at a cracking pace and I really enjoyed that. On reflection, yeah there were a few cringeworthy moments and bits of dialogue. On the whole I liked it and would read the next one but maybe the author could, I don't know, tone it down a bit. I'm not sure the interaction between Zoe and Tatum is realistic.
In the Darkness is nearly as good as the first book: intense, suspenseful, with excellent character development.
The plot is somewhat OTT, and I feel like everyone needs therapy STAT, especially Zoe who got over an incredibly traumatic experience in the blink of an eye.
But I can forgive most anything when a story grabs me and won't let go until the very last page. On to book 3 because no way can I stop now.
This series continues to be an absolute favorite of mine, love love LOVE IT. I’m so excited for the Glover show down. I hope this isn’t simply a trilogy, I would really like to see more of this duo. ❤️❤️
The second book in the Zoe Bentley series picks up just as the first one finishes - they could both still be read without reading the other, but you'll gain a lot more context by reading both.
I'm so torn on this series. On the one hand, Mike Omer clearly cares about getting the details right - there's little bits where Zoe shines, or the psychological details are just perfect, and you can see the care that went into researching and making sure he was accurate. It's endearing, and it does a lot to make up for the clunkier moments, but they're still there. There's no "Strangling Undertaker" this time (good lord, that name was terrible), but it's not much better this time around. The name dropping of music artists continues, and the dialogue gets pretty clunky as well. It just doesn't quite sound like things people say - none of it is unreasonable if it were written correspondence, but it's just not words people use out loud.
However, though I'm sounding critical, the endearing qualities of this series continue to win me over enough that I know I'll be continuing the series. There's a lot here that improves on the first book, and I look forward to seeing it continue.
The second book in the Zoe Bentley series picks up right on the heels of A Killer's Mind. Forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley is back at Quantico, VA and serial killer Rod Glover is still haunting her. She wants to join the FBI hunt for him. For her it is personal. But, she is needed elsewhere. Zoe and her partner, Tatum Gray, are sent to San Angelo, Texas where a potential serial killer may be at work.
A video was posted online showing a woman who was buried alive clawing at her grave. The person who posted the video called himself "Schrodinger". The video was titled "Experiment Number One". Hence the fear that this may be a serial killer. This fear becomes fact when a second video of woman buried alive is posted. The clock is ticking. How many victims will there be before he can be stopped?
While this is happening Zoe is worried about her sister, Andrea, who is alone back in Virginia with Rod Glover potentially stalking her. Tatum has his own problems. Before being transferred to Quantico Tatum had been in Los Angeles. He had shot and killed a pedophile and an investigation into the shooting is being reopened. This is a cause for some friction between Zoe and Tatum which just doesn't ring true. There are other characters who aren't realistic either such as the captain of the San Angelo police and a Chicago reporter who learns what Zoe is working on and travels to San Angelo to get a scoop on the story. Then there is Tatum's grandfather, Marvin, who adds some comedy to a dark story.
When the identity of the killer is revealed it was quite a surprise and unexpected. These helped to make the story enjoyable. The writing is not great but it is not so bad that I would not be interested in reading the next story in the series Thicker than Blood.
This is a second book in a police procedural series, which can be read without the first one, but I would recommend starting at the beginning to get the full story with the overarching plot.
This second instalment deals with a serial killer burying women alive and I was pleasantly surprised that the author switched the obvious solution for something actually unexpected.
The series has great mysteries, humor and likeable characters (especially Tatum’s grandfather, he’s too funny). I highly recommend.
Pirmoji skaityta Mike Omer knyga "Žudiko kailyje" man paliko tikrai puikų įspūdį. Be galo laukiau pasirodant antrosios šios serijos knygos!
Šioje istorijoje Zoja Bentli ir jos partneris Teitumas Grėjus atvyksta į San Andželą. Čia jie susiduria su serijiniu žudiku, kuris grobia merginas bei jas laidoja gyvas.. Ir negana to, visą šią egzekuciją transliuoja internete.
Be galo pašėlęs bei vis dar turintis parako senukas. Manau, jog kiekvienoje istorijoje smagu sutikti tokią charizmatišką asmenybę. Autorius visą laiką puikiai vedžiojo už nosies, nors ir tikrai stengiausi nuspėti žudiką bei jo motyvus, to man padaryti nepavyko. Tikiu, jog bus gerai! 😎
Really enjoying this series! I thought book 2 was just as good as book 1. Omer does a great job at writing some really tense moments, and so far I haven't been able to guess the ending. I was all set to start book 3, but it's not available on Scribd! Hopefully it will be up there soon so I can see what happens next! :)
Marvin is in this one, too, and he's just as awesome and hilarious!
This is an interesting follow-up in the Zoe Bentley series but not as good as the first one. The writing is humorous and there are some LOL moments. The profiling and detailed analysis to find the victims was fascinating, but the last one where Tatum finds the victim, was far-fetched. I might keep up with the series if Zoe doesn't get more irritating. Her irrational behaviour when it comes to 'protecting' her sister gets her into difficult situations, and Tatum has to rescue her.
Every book that i recently read has multiple POV and timelines, which I am getting tired of. This is also no exception. The flashback tells about the killer's childhood and why he became a killer. This was not necessary. Can't we have a detective story which doesn't justify the killer's motive?
Reading this series is like unpacking Russian dolls 🪆, you’d think you are done only to find that there’s still more and it’s so exhilarating
This was yet another thrilling read, I kept on gripping my iPad tightly, wanted to put it down but then couldn’t resist wanting to know who the villain is and then just when I thought I got it and it turned out I was so wrong and I’d involuntarily clench just like in the first book 🤭😅
I needed the adrenaline rush and it looks like I might have overdosed 😛
Character development on this one is so much more noticeable and great to read , Tatum was a skeptic in the beginning and now is more open to suggestions and more proactive, Zoe is no longer as blunt as before but still struggles with some social cues and it’s interesting to read. 😂😂😂 Granpa Marvin is my favourite.
Marvin remains my favorite character. Disappointed some plot points were so predictable but still enjoyable for what it is — enough so that I’m starting the next in the series.
This was a great story and superb narration! I enjoyed every bit of this book! (audible review)
I am a Zoe Bentley fan! I love her character and thought process. I like Tatum as well.
The story line and plot was great. I love a great FBI profiler story. Trying to figure out who the psycho killer is. Great stuff. This one was super crazy too.
I don't want to give spoilers away so I won't. The first book was great and the second just a good. I loved them both and highly recommend them- in order.
As for the narration, I love Brittany Pressley she is an amazing narrator and does a fantastic job on all the men's voices. She gives everyone their own distinct voice. She has an amazing reading voice too. Loved it!
