The action-packed sixth book in the exciting "Timber: United States Marshal" western series!
Upon returning from his latest assignment, Marshal Jake Timber comes home to heartbreak and loneliness. Drowning his sorrow in a bottle and a deck of cards, he seems to have lost his way. Then he is sent on an assignment to investigate suspicious activity in mining country. This unfamiliar territory brings new challenges and dangers to Timber as he investigates the murders and shady business dealings surrounding the Lucky Streak mine.
If you love "Timber: United States Marshal" you may also want to try "Caz: Vigilante Hunter" from Scott Harris!
Our man, Marshal Timber has arrived home, but it's empty! His wife has left him taking the children. She was kind enough to leave a note explaining her departure to St. Louis, where she will buy a home for her and the children. She also requested fifty dollars a month for child support. Well Timber was expecting this out come, they weren't getting along at all constant bickering. It got so bad she told him to stay away...rather strange request, unless she has another interest. Ever since her leaving, Timber retrieved his belongings from the bedroom where his soon to be ex-wife left them and he moved into Miss. Ella's Boarding House. That's when the drinking started, a very unhappy man who thought he should have waited before marrying Emily, which was his second marriage. She was much younger than him, but he still loved her and his children. After he was served with divorce paper, and he read them, and he signed them with the thought that he'll take care of his children. Hopefully Marshal Timber will find a nice lady and this time make sure she's the one..you know they are compatible. His job is rough and dangerous, never know when this will be your last assignment..he certainly doesn't need that type distraction of no family especially with the type of business he's in. He said it was nice to know that he had a family to come back to...now all that's gone..not a good feeling, no wonder he's drinking. We all hope Marshal Jake Timber finds someone soon..everyone deserves some happiness in this rough world..I know we weren't promised a "Rose Garden," but dang a little happiness goes a long ways...ride easy Marshal Jake Timber, we got your back..
Fortunately I have been able to read all the Timber novels and each one, somehow, seems to improve over the previous release. Timber is one rugged Marshal and doesn't take anything from anyone. He reminds me of Nate, Joe Pickett's go to guy. They both believe in justice, not necessarily the law. Great story by a skilled author.
Definitely worthy of the five stars I awarded this outstanding western adventure story, as there is one exciting episode after another from beginning to end. The character selections were perfectly selected and very descriptive. There is plenty of gunplay and never ending consistency of ongoing adventures throughout the entire book. Too, all of Mr. Hanlon's exceptionally well versed storylines never ceases to amaze me with their explicit cunningness and exciting adventures. I found this to be a very heartwarming story, especially toward the end of the book. I certainly recommend this series to anyone loving "true life" American folklore adventures, as you will certainly get your thrills from Timber and his cohorts!
I wonder if there is an author that remembers what he is writing about
Mr. Hanlon wrote about Timber’s young second wife that had left him, divorced him, and took his young children to St. Louis and gave her the name Emily. In the previous book the young girl’s name was Abby. I guess there’s no use complaining about editing in western books because most are pretty bad! It seems they can’t put in the right words, use the right names of characters from past books or the main character’s horse changes breeds and color. In spite of this they write amazing stories!
Marshal Timber is lucky in gunfights, but after losing his 1st wife and children he tries again and winds up divorced from them because of his job. I love the excitement on most every page. The only thing I disliked was the divorce. I still have to give it a five star rating. I recommend it to everyone who loves good western mysteries.
Ok, if I’m being honest I wasn’t sure how to rate this one. The gunfights were good but I didn’t understand how the stuff about the mining business worked. I guess 4 stars is a fair rating given that I had fun with it anyway.
