An Old Friend in Need, A Fantasy Game World, and a Reluctant Hero
Hal Dix had success at home after his initial outing into the world of Fantasma. He leveled up in both his job and at home. Everything was going fine in his life.
Then, the mage Tildi, the Elder showed up again with news from the other world. His friend was in trouble and only he could help. Hal didn’t want to be a hero, but he wasn’t the sort of fellow to leave a comrade behind.
Whisked away to the game world of Fantasma once again, Hal enters the role of the reluctant hero he thought he’d left behind.

Reread 3.5 Stars It was much better than its precedent , it shows in the way the world "Game" has gotten bigger , more detailed and full of action. Things have been awesome for Hal Dix since his return from Fantasma , he is slaying it at work and at home, he is more confident and secure in his abilities, it is safe to say that he leveled up for real this time , the only thing that's bothering him lately is his lack of leadership and initiative ,especially with the coming team-building exercise which will make him face off against his nemesis... But all of that becomes secondary when Hal learns that his companion back at the world of Fantasma: Princess Key has gone MIA and there is no one capable of saving her "according to devious and self serving arch-Mage Tildi" but him , and so it begins: Hal's second adventure , only this time not as a rogue but as a warrior ,all of his previous abilities and hard learned skills are gone and he has to start from scratch , starting as a lowly caravan guard then becoming a mighty arena gladiator who led a successful rebellion Spartacus style, which turned him into a general fighting against the evil emperor's army ... Keep in mind that all of this is told in a very simple way , no mystery or deep thoughts are involved. It was a fun read though !
I have really enjoyed these books so far. I love how it puts the fantasy world and the modern worlds together. the passion and determination of Hal Dix to save this world is amazing. And the friends and team he has collected are such a good fit. I can't wait to read more!
I enjoyed this one even more than the first book! I love the characters, I love the writing, I love the narrating, I love the battles and I really enjoy the RPG aspect in this book.
What I also really enjoyed were the Author's notes at the end of the Audiobook, instead of normal notes the writer decided to include an interview with the voice actor Roberto Scarlato who narrated the book. I love those types of little easter eggs, it just gives it something extra.
While I definitely enjoyed this installment in the Accidental Traveler series, certain elements that I loved from the previous book were lacking. While this still falls in the Litrpg genre, it seemed to stray from its roots to adopt a more classic fantasy feel. Though towards the end of the book I felt as if this shift may have been by design.
Nevertheless, one of my favorite things about the previous title was the character progression...both as a literary character, but more importantly statistically. I enjoyed seeing how Hal's allocation of stat points had a meaningful impact on his experience within the world. His allocation here felt negligible. There was definite character progression, but it had nothing to do with stats, thus distancing the story from the litrpg genre.
Regardless, I'm buying the next book and can't wait to read what happens next!
Much like the first book, our hero is sent back to some fantasy realm. This time it is while on a flight to a management training programme.
He (temporarily) loses all of his thief abilities and become a warrior, so again the progression is rapid enough to be enjoyable, though I did wonder about the odd 5000 experience points for killing a single opponent.
The arena and related (Spartacus) storyline worked well, as did the goblin encounter while on the wagon train. Of course, to spice things up, this time one of the bad guys has a sword that absorbs abilities by robbing them from his opponents. That took care of the thief "one shot kill" ability.
All in all an enjoyable second book in the series. Very few, minor complaints and mostly fun. I will definitely be reading the third book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Like most trilogy, don't jump into it with this middle book. You'll be a bit lost and will miss most of the context. Here, the protagonist is called back to the world of Fantasma because reasons (his friend from the first volume got abducted) and re-rolls as a Warrior leading armies, rather than a Thief sneaking around. Even if I think the target would be better as a Thief class.
The RPG mechanic aren't as interesting as the first time, and the storyline is not massively original, and the characters are still simplistic, but the overall book works well enough.
I must be honest that I was looking for a lot more action to happen on earth rather than in fantasia. This book is much more grittier than the first one. It is about getting in your face and fighting with your opponent.
The book and pacing are pretty decent. There is a strong villain to balance the equation though he pops up only mid way through the book. I felt it was sad that Hal was unable to use his thief abilities in the book (spoiler alert).
I enjoyed the story and it was pretty light enjoyable read.
Do pick it up especially if you are going to get on a plane shortly. Who knows.. you might wake up in Fantasma and be the next opponent.
It's reluctant leader Perrin apparently. If the first book is basically Matt doing hit and run attacks on the Sceanchan empire, this book is Perrin trying to fight/escape the Shaido Aiel with his mixed forces. There are some interesting mechanics going on, including some better flushing out of the lore, but this very much feels like a middle book in a trilogy and is mostly treading water.
I guess the Rand book is next, will be interesting to see what Davis does with the magic system. Hopefully it isn't a straight 'weaving ' rip.
I'm not all that interested in Hal's 'real' life, but in this case I would have liked to have known how things went there in the end before waiting to have the next audiobook available to me, lol. The beginning of the this book was sort of a letdown from the last one, in the real world part. But then I felt like the ending of the last book in that respect was anticlimactic to begin with. I liked the book well enough though, but the end just in general felt somewhat rushed. Curious about the next one.
I’m new to the LitRPG genre, so I don’t have a solid feel for expectations for stories here. With that said, this was a very entertaining read. The hero is easy to like. I did find the ending to be a bit sudden. I fully expected another 20 or so pages of denouement, wrapping things up when Hal returned. Instead, it was just a quick end. I’m curious to see if we find out how Hal’s weekend went in the next book.
It was interesting' until the Mc turned his brain off and got in a mess of his own stupidity, even if was made to progress the story in that direction.. spartacus cliche kicked in full throttle that killed it for me, is like our hero got a intelect debuff for the rest of the book and every success was a deus ex bull.... to progress the story' again not for the sake of entertainment, this become a choore to end.
This book kept the series going with a fast paced story of Hal and his companions. My only complaint, for lack of a better word, is I would love to know more of the companions stories. But that's what the imagination is for. I'm happy there is another book. I wish Hal would have kept up his I am Spartacus rant a little more as that was funny. Hopefully in the next book, we can learn a little more about tildi. Great second book I highly recommend.
Found some errors, at the start of chapter 3 Hal is misspelled as hall. At 32% Mark the word the is split on two lines. At 55% there should be were the. As in these were the biggest and strongest fighters. At 86% took is added into a sentence and is unneeded. For the price of this book I'd expect better editing. I recommend reading this on KU like I did.
This one seemed to rely more on cliches and tropes from other works.
The warrior skills just seemed very glazed over and this one just seemed like an extremely average adventure story with a tiny bit of LitRPG thrown in. The middle of the book failed to capture my interest and I sped through towards to predictable climax/conclusion.
This one got a lot darker and I’m still trying to figure out how this guy went from zero to totally chill with killing people. I mean all “bad guys” but still, seems like he’d have some several trauma to deal with from these two trips to the game. LitRPG is still new to me and I’m hooked on this series.
A very good book which compliments the first book and continues the story of Hal Dix and his exploits and adventures in the , This second instalment is faster paced than the first which made for a very enjoyable and very easy read and i look forward to the third in the series which is titled Accidental Mage
Still, the writer's form and the reader's voice continue to be good. I am sure there were a lot of 'Spartacus' references here but I never saw the movie so I missed all be the most obvious. Overall, I liked it regardless of not being in the (presumed) target audience.
Imaginative and exciting world of Fantasma. Well written with so many great characters. The narration was absolutely amazing. Roberto Scarlato nailed it. This is book 2 and can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading book 1 first to enjoy the series fully. I highly recommend this book/series.
I'm not sure why the author chose to re-pathetic the MC, there didn't really seem to make him essentially the same as the beginning of the first book. Additionally: I don't know why the RL nemesis was brought back for this one. It just seems, well, pathetic. The rest of the book is good enough for me to get the next book. Tom out
This is the second book in the series and was a good continuation. The MC returns to the real world with more confidence and is more successful but by the time we see him again his confidence has started to flag. The mage finds him and tells him he is needed again. This is far more complicated and he struggles more than he did in the first book with far less luck than in the first book. It is almost like he had no skill compared to the first book. But overall it was enjoyable to read.
I have read both books and they are fun and easy to read. The writer uses stories and history to add spice to his. Robin Hood in the first book and Spartacus in this one.
Surprisingly interesting story with a hero with a flip flop personality between his real life personality and game personality but the author made this series work really well l recommend this series
A great second book in the series. And since there is a third book in the series, I say go read it now, if it is like the first two books, it will be well worth skipping the reading reviews of the second one in the series to start reading it sooner.
From start to finish a whirlwind of fantasy litrpg. The mc did not seem as op as the previous outing. Like most part two's in a trilogy seems open ended and unresolved but has left me wanting more so has done the trick.
More polished than the previous book, this story offers great action and drama. The characters are still a little too 2D, but they’re good and growing. Definitely worth reading. Recommended.
His new found confidence follows him into his world and then he gets to go back again. I still enjoyed it but I wouldn't let my 11 year old read it. I think the progression for book three is obvious, but I could be wrong so on to 3 to find out.
The book's plot was interesting, but the way it was written was confusing and simple. I personally did not get a personal connection through the writing. I recommend this book for people looking for a faster read.
