Hijo de unos cómicos ambulantes. Huérfano a los dos años. Fue adoptado por un rico plantador de Richmond y educado en Norteamérica e Inglaterra. Expulsado de la Universidad de Virginia por jugador, regresó a Boston y publicó su primer libro de poemas, Tamerlán. Tras un breve paso por el ejército, se lanzó a una carrera literaria.
Trabajaba como periodista al tiempo que salían a la luz su poesía (El Aaraaf y El cuervo y otros poemas), cuentos en prosa (Narraciones extraordinarias) y novelas
como Las aventuras de Arthur Gordon Pym.
La presente selección, especialmente traducida para Mitos Poesía, recoge los principales poemas de un genio atormentado, incomprendido en su época, y cuya estética halló un gran eco en poetas franceses como Baudelaire y Mallarme.

But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.
The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

definitivamente la poesía no es para mi

Además de la curiosidad de tener un poema dedicado a la virgen de Guadalupe, tiene grandes ventajas al tener los textos en inglés y en español.
La editorial hizo un gran trabajo y si conoces sobre la vida de Poe entenderás el por qué de tan sombríos y melancólicos escritos.
Lo recomiendo ampliamente si eres fan del autor.

las traducciones son un poco cuestionables en algunos casos pero me lo compré porque es de las pocas antologías bilingües que existen y es Poe así que <3333 su poesía es mi favorita

El Cuervo, un poema inquietante pero hermoso...

"Y el impávido cuervo osado aun sigue, sigue posado,
en el pálido busto de Palas que hay encima del portal;
y su mirada aguileña es la de un demonio que sueña,
cuya sombra el candil en el suelo proyecta fantasmal;
y mi alma, de esa sombra que allí flota fantasmal,
no se alzará… ¡nunca más!"
Siempre es un placer leer a Poe, ya sea poesía, novela o relatos. El poema El cuervo es un clásico para todos y no puede faltar en una antología suya. Pero fue bueno leer algunos poemas de los que no tenía conocimiento.
"Por eso cuando evoco tu recuerdo
veo una isla remota y encantada
en medio de un océano revuelto;
una isla que, a pesar de estar rodeada
por temibles borrascas y por vientos,
luce siempre sonriente y despejada
hasta en los peores momentos."
