“I knew you liked me.”
Duru scoffs, but I see a smile trying to emerge. “You still owe my princess a favour, and you can’t fulfill that if you’re dead.”
I grin. “You’re a real softie.”
“And if you are caught, I will deny ever knowing you.”
“Stop it, your loyalty is making me blush.”
“I'm not a goldfish. I do have an attention span.” I continue to twirl the arrow through my fingers like it's a baton. “And I resent you thinking—Oh, look!" I exclaim excitedly, zooming toward the window. “That fae down there is riding a unicorn!” Okay. I see his point.
“If you're my mate, you have to laugh at all my jokes,” I admonish.
His face sobers, and he nods seriously. “Of course, my beloved. I won't fail you again.”
I smile. This mate stuff is fun.”
“Syl. Take over. I can’t talk to her when she does the thing where she disagrees with me.”
“That’s yummy,” I admit. “What, are you guys just carrying boxes of chocolates in your pockets now?”
“Just me,” Sylred winks. It's not lost on me that he just thwarted another one of my meltdowns. With chocolate. I'm not even embarrassed about it. Chocolate is amazing.
“I don’t want to disappear again,” I whisper.
“If you do, I'll find you.”
