Janice T. Connell is an attorney and recognized authority on the subject of Marian apparitions. She is the author of ten books, an international speaker and frequent radio and television commentator.
This is one of the most beautiful books I have read in a long time and it was the perfect book to read after just losing my own mother. Mary’s voice comes through loud and clear in this book. She is so gentle, comforting, wise beyond explanation and her every word touches the heart.
The book is set up as a daily meditation which is how I used it, although it could be read straight through or you could browse it looking for a question requiring answer. Each entry begins with a quote—generally from a saint, but also Scripture and other writers—followed by a question and an answer from Our Lady. Her words were my favorite part, but the Meditations which followed were also good. Then there was a Daily Application and a Prayer. Most entries were a couple of pages; some longer.
One conversation in particular with Mary really stuck out for me. Here it is:
Q. SPIRITUAL MOTHER, QUEEN OF ANGELS, HOW CAN I LOVE GOD WITH MY WHOLE HEART AND OTHERS TOO WHILE EVIL EXISTS EVERYWHERE? A. Keep your heart pure.
Q. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? A. Keep your heart clean.
Q. HOW DO I KEEP MY HEART CLEAN? A. Dear child, a clean heart beats for God alone. Never give your heart to anyone else. See everything and everyone in your life in relationship to your faithfulness to God. Keep God first. Keep God as your goal, your source, your life, your only love. Keep your heart clean.
Q. DEAR SPIRITUAL MOTHER, WHAT IS A CLEAN HEART? A. A clean heart is detached from all that is not God. See all things through God, and in God, and with God. Be still. Be silent. See God in every circumstance of your life. Be one with God through Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
This is Janice’s 7th book about Mary. If you are in need of a little TLC, you need look no further.
June 28, 2019: Keep your heart for God alone. ... See everything and everyone in your life in relationship to your faithfulness to God. Keep God first. (I wish I had been making note of all the places where parts of this text spoke so powerfully to me, but then maybe I would not have gotten anything else done. It is a marvelous book!)
May 9, 2019: After reading Dr. Gress's book, I am so glad I am doing this. It is so very beautiful! Like a daily dialogue with Mary.
April 5, 2019: My sister gave me this while i was still in St. Louis. It was hard to resist but I wanted to finish The Imitation of Mary before starting this. In many respects it looks/feels like a follow-on to that book, i.e., it is set up as a Q&A to Mary. It's going to be my Holy Week companion.
Well worth having this book as a guide to spiritual growth. Includes Scripture, quotes from saints, questions to direct thoughts, how to apply what you have learned from the reading, and prayers. Excellent. Reminds us, too, that Mary is Queen of Angels for a reason. God has given her a mission to guide us all to Christ.
This was an amazing book! There are quotes from the Bible, and answers to questions everyone of us has had in our lives at one point in our lives or another.
Just not very good. If you are looking for a book that is going to take on hard existential questions and provide thoughtful reasoned responses to those questions, this is not the book you are looking for. Written in the form of a 1st-person conversation with Mary, the author provides answers to a series of questions that the author also generated. Neither of which are terribly deep, well thought-out, or very coherent. Here is an example: Q:Who is Jesus? A:Jesus is the Lord. Q:Is Jesus the brother of all mankind? A:Yes -- The questions and answers are typically longer than that, as the question usually start with "Spiritual Mother", which after the 100th question gets pretty repetitive. The answers typically wander around the question itself quickly after saying we should just stay close to Mary and essentially not ask so many questions. After the question-answer session there is a short text to meditate on and then a short prayer, which is essentially another form of meditation. The author seems to be very supportive of meditation. I recommend that you not buy this book and pick up something more focused on meditation. It will be a better use of your time.
I read this book (or the first 1/4 of it and skimmed the remainder, it gets pretty repetitive and trivial quickly) because my father had 5 copies of it around the house. He never read any of them. After finding the 5th copy, I thought maybe the Universe was trying to tell me something. After reading the book, I realized one thing, whoever designed the cover earned their money. The book has a catchy cover and the empty promise of 'answers to universal questions' is very intriguing. Heck, it sold 5 copies to the same person. Beyond that, I sorry my father wasted money on this book - all five times, but I'm glad that I didn't.
I hate rating books on goodreads three stars or less...this was a bit of a slog to get through.😕 Don't get me wrong, I LOVE our Blessed Mother, but this book just took me forever to read for some reason. It got repetitive after awhile. I did like how it was formatted as a question and answer book and I did love all the quotes from all the saints, so for that it's a three star book.
