I really have to go back and read the first four-and-a-half books in this series, because I've read just about every one since and each is better than the last. And each stands alone if you just want a single adventure in the Florida Keys filled with sun and water and boating and partying and all the craziness that actually happens in "Miami Vice" territory. But the continuing cast of characters have a story arc external to the plots which makes every one an old friend when you meet him or her again. Largely him, but the women central to the stories are generally strong, smart, and fully capable of holding their own among the rugged heroes and antiheroes populating Steven Becker's world.
The Mac Travis series has been great from beginning to end. You wonder how everything seems to find them. The storylines takes you through numerous Keys in Florida. It has been kept fairly clean but does reflect the drinking and drug use in FL.
Becker has done a great job in narrating all the books. It isn't a full production series with sound effects but you don't seem to even notice. His use of pauses and inflection of voice has made the lack of sound effects negligible.
This three volume set was a real pleasure to read. It is almost too unrealistic, but it still holds your interest. These individual volumes are quick, easy reads -- that don't require too much thinking -- but are entertaining. This is the second series of books I have read by Steven Becker, and I will probably read more; taking them for what they are. It is sort of like watching John Wick or The Equalizer, just pure entertainment value only. But I need something like that every so often.
So sad. I purchased set 4-6 only to have Amazon Kindle jump to the end of book six and ask for a rating. I was never able to open book four, five or six. I can't load them as individual books and am only allowed to jump forward. Amazon Kindle does their authors a dis-service by presenting the books scrambled out of sequence. I would really like to read the entire series continuing with book 4.
Love having these box sets. You get through reading the first one and your hooked then you remember you have another book to continue us reading. Reviting from page one to the end.
Fantastic reads. I lived in Florida for a short while and I can just picture everywhere Mac is. I love Tru too, a lovable rogue always in trouble. I'm now on my 7th book. You won't be disappointed.
