I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.

I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper.
I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.

This is the only book in the series that I've read so far. I always thought that this series would be too angsty or depressing to me, but I still wanted to give this book a try because its premise appealed to me the most.

I love slow burn in a romance and the period when the MCs get to know each other is usually my favourite part. More often than not we don't really get that kind of relationship development, but I had a feeling that this story might give me that. And I was right. There's a lot of tenderness in a story where just a single touch of a finger or holding hands holds so much significance. Even the scenes with were enough to make my heart melt.

I didn't find the story as angsty as I expected, but it is very sad at times. It was a bit predictable in a sense that I knew how the story would develop, their ups and downs. But in the end I liked it a lot more than I anticipated.

Wonderful narration by Adam Gold. What an amazing job he does bringing characters to life!

Ireland grew up with an abusive father; his mother taught him to fear touch: Never let them touch you. Wanting to overcome his past, Ireland studied to be a nurse, but when he relapses, he can't even put a blood pressure cuff on a patient. His colleagues have to pick up the slack.

While I had full sympathy for Ireland's phobia, I thought his choice of profession made his life that much more difficult. There are so many jobs that don't require touch; why pick the one where touching the human body is inevitable?

When we meet Ireland, he's gone to visit his mother (who has Alzheimer's and lives at a care facility) and is at a low point; seeing his mom always makes Ireland's phobia worse. His girlfriend, unwilling to put up with his setbacks any longer, breaks up with him and asks him to move out.

Enter hot moving man and musician Raven who has several jobs and sings with a band just for fun. Raven is super chill, genuinely nice, and drawn to Ireland at first sight. Of course, he initially assumes Ireland is just an arse who won't shake his hand. When Ireland tells Raven about his condition, Raven doesn't push. And he stays.

Like all the books in this series, Touch of Love focuses entirely on the relationship between the men. Raven and Ireland have to figure out how to be together when relationships require touch and trust.

As you'd expect considering Ireland's phobia, the steam is a long time in coming. I really wanted to see Ireland trust Raven enough to fully give in, but that's not how phobias work. This is not a very sexy book, but there's plenty of light touches and tenderness. I loved that Raven learned cat's cradle just for Ireland!

Raven tells Ireland over and over again: there is no normal; there's just us.

Even though this book is a standalone, a couple of the previous MCs have cameo appearances in this story (which I loved). The books seem to overlap to a certain degree, and all the guys with phobias see the same psychologist (who is an amazing woman!)

I loved both characters, the slow-burn romance, and the wonderful HEA.

Nicky James is an auto-buy for me now. I usually shy away from angsty stories dealing with mental health, but she creates flawed, damaged characters who, like everyone else, just want to love and be loved. The angst is never unbearable, and in the end, love wins.

I had to give myself a few hours away from the book to find the words. But even now it's still hard to keep a clear eye. Every thought of the book makes me tear up again. What a stunningly beautiful, heartbreaking story.
I think I need to find a new category for books like this. Favorite or awesome bookshelves can't do it justice. I'll have to think about it, but I think this book will be one of my top 10 all-time best books.
I only started this series in the first place because of this book. And even though the two books before it were amazing, this one is above and beyond.
Ireland's story, his experiences, his feelings and fears are so ... God, I really don't know how to describe it ... I feel like I've had my stomach slit open and now my guts are hanging out of me uselessly but it doesn't bother me a bit.
And Raven, who I thought was a bit too funky at first, turned out to be one of the best supporting characters ever. He is so infinitely patient and cautious and just one hell of a dream.

Every time you touch me, I’m on top of the world because I know what kind of gift I’m receiving. 💗😭💗

I love what we have, Ireland. I love what we share. Why can’t you believe me? I only ever want you to give me what you can. Don’t ever push yourself. Look at how far we’ve come. A few months ago, you told me this was impossible. It’s not impossible, it just takes time, and I’ll wait. I’ll always wait. 💗😭💗💗😭💗

Fuck this was intense. I held my breath, my heart pounding. Wow. I loved Ireland and Raven. Again, it was intense, but sooo beautiful. The angst level was bearable despite my stop breathing a few times.

Ireland’s inner turmoil killed me. The constant decision between progress in his own comfort of living (and loving and touching) and his from Alzheimer suffering mother, who happens to be his greatest risk at a set-back. Walking away from that risk, his own mother, was impossible for Ireland. But it was also his greatest obstacle in an attempt of having something resembling what he considers a normal relationship with another person. It was heartbreaking, really.

Raven was a gift Ireland never thought he would receive. His endless support and understanding. Wow, that man was truly special. I’m glad he found Ireland - the day his relationship with his girlfriend ended after a bad set-back caused by a visit to his mother.

Roaring with pent-up rage, my mind officially caved. The pressure was too much. The weight more than I could shoulder. I wanted out. I wanted free, but I was chained, kept prisoner against my will to this crippling anxiety. For all my life, I’d never stood a chance.

“Hear me. Listen to me,” he continued. “I’m not going anywhere. […]”

His touch of love was the only comfort I needed.

I loved so much how Raven found a way to touch Ireland without send him fleeing. And how he always found a way to get Ireland coming back to him. ♡ But shit, it was rocky! Lucky for Ireland that Raven intended on keeping his promise!

The Trials of Fears series explores different phobias - here haphephobia, the fear of touch.

Adam Gold brought these characters and their story to life even more with his amazing narrating performance.

This is book #3 in the series and I guess I go back to beginning now to read them all.

Edit, a few days after writing my review: I keep thinking about the fact that Ireland has so many tattoos, both arms, shoulders, back, torso and even his legs, and explained that there were 2 possible reasonings why he was able to get them, either to punish himself more, as being touched really equalled pain, or as gifts to himself when he felt good, because he liked them.
BUT. I don't think the author knows just HOW MANY many hours you need to be touched by a stranger to get a tattoo. I don't have as many tattoos as Ireland (none on my legs, on both arms only half sleeves, but shoulders, back and stomach yes) but you have to sit extremely still for 3 to 4 hours with only small pauses to get about the half of one upper arm, for example.
I find it extremely unbelievable that Ireland even when he felt best could have endured such long periods of being touched.
Now I'll shut up.

I expected to love this, but the longer I read the more frustrating it was.

At the beginning I liked both MCs, Raven and Ireland, and was happy to know more about them. Sadly both were very one dimensional. Raven was the strong and positive one, never giving up, never doubting, always a rock and comforting Ireland. Ireland was (understandably) fearful, nearly broken, and always pessimistic and in need of someone to be strong for him. He was never hopeful for the future, always fearing the worst.

The storyline was soooo depressing to read.. some things were totally unnecessary (one flower-incident for example), we got the picture a long time ago that Ireland had to suffer immensely. After a while I simply didn't care that much anymore. There was no lightness, I never got the feeling Ireland and Raven had relaxing or happy moments together (before the epilogue).

The relationship between Ireland and his psychiatrist/friend didn't feel healthy to me, but that's just my feeling.

that was intense and the build up was amazing.

i love the whole “fear of touch” concept introduced by the author. new and emotional :( it was heartbreaking and made me tear up couple times. at first i feel like the whole backstory was simple, but that’s trauma. won’t always be the same as experiencing it first hand.

it feels so comforting seeing Ireland found someone that can accept him fully for who he is. anyone like Ireland deserve to get out of their head and enjoy silence sometimes. and more people should be like Raven. I adore Raven so much 🥹💗

i do think the pacing of the story was inconsistent for a great storyline. i’m tired of the third act. especially when it was done ehhh like that. i was expecting a whole lot better depth and plot for that. otherwise it was ahmazing still!

It is impossible to imagine it.

Touching and being touched is a basic human need.
Being terrified of it sounds like complete agony.

And it is.
Ireland's everyday life is sheer hell. Whether in his personal or professional life (he is a nurse) his phobia constantly interferes with what he wants or needs to do. Being a very touchy-feely person myself, it was pure agony watching him going through all the panic, the fear, the anxiety, the jittery nerves and claustrophobia when someone comes too near.

What was worst for me though is Ireland overwhelming frustration at his condition. The anger and helplessness he feels when he is on a low seems unsurpassable. Being 'normal' is his biggest wish, something he thinks he will never achieve.

Nicky James really knows how to describe every nuance of Ireland's condition and making us FEEL with and for him. Most of all she makes us understand. The question how to have a relationship with someone like Ireland was extremely well handled.

because ...
what about tender touches?
what about delicate kisses?
what about skin to skin?
what about intimacy?
what about giving up control?

I ADORED how the physical side of things very very gradually unfolds between these two.

Raven is simply unbelievable. He is gentle, respectful and so understanding, it actually brought tears to my eyes on quite a few occasions ...

That grey hoodie did break my heart a bit.
Raven's determination not to let Ireland go, whatever happened, was incredibly moving.

Yes, there is not a lot of heat in this one, but tbh, that is totally logical and organic. There's also no miracle cure. Setbacks WILL happen, but with a good network of professionals and loved ones, Ireland can and will fight his phobia successfully. Even if it'll never be gone.

'normal' and 'impossible' are two words Ireland heavily uses.
Seeing him learn that he needs neither word to define himself was a beautiful message of hope.

I leaned into his (Raven's) embrace and allowed him to hold me again. There was safety in Raven's arms, and love, something I hadn't felt in a lifetime.

Awesome writing! (and I dare you not to get a bit teary eyed!)

This was awesome. Raven was awesome. He was so patient and understanding with Ireland.
His ways to let Ireland know it was okay, not to push himself... I loved that he blew on Ireland's skin to let him know he was going to touch. I loved him so much for doing that.

Ireland was so messed up. Longing to be touched but didn't dare to. His mother's warnings (screams) to never let anyone touch him in his ears all the time. It was heartbreaking.

And then the hoodie.....

description

Then, he removed his hoodie and placed it on the foot of my bed.

“I know I can’t hold you right now, but if you need comfort, maybe this can bridge our gap. If you want.”

He backed toward the door again, paused, blew me a kiss, and left. My heart lurched, and the moment he was gone, as stupid and juvenile as it was, I caught the kiss and pressed it to my lips with a choked sob.

When Ireland wasn't able to touch Raven, he would hug Raven's hoodie. I thought that was such an intimate thing to do.

Days after I finished this book but am still thinking about it. Nicky James did an awesome job with this phobia. It was refreshing reading something that wasn't all about sex cause obviously that wouldn't be possible. But it was intimate and I felt it.

This was really good, but I think I’m getting a little tired of this series. I feel like although the phobias are different, every story is the same.
- Guy has an incapacitating phobia that prevents him from leading a normal life
- Guy meets sweet, patient, perfect guy, who helps him
- Something happens and we are back at square one. MC with phobia tries to get out of relationship because he feels he is a burden.
- They fix it and live HEA

Oh and Erin the phobia specialized psychiatrist is there helping.

While I really liked Ireland and Raven, I felt like there was nothing really new here. I liked the touch phobia aspect, and how they made progress together. But something was missing.

Reread 10/2024 review- 4.7〜4.97 stars.

Original 06/2021 review- 5 FULL STARS. God, these two got my heart all 🥺🥰🥺🥰. Their love is so powerful, and you can just feel it in your chest.🥺😍 And I absolutely love them together!! Surprisingly, I feel Raven and Ireland’s connection even more than Vaughn x Oryn (Love Me Whole) 🤯, and that is truly saying something considering LMW is my 2nd/3rd favorite book ever!! Gahh!! I can’t stop feeling this full happy tightness in my chest because of this😩💕

Here are some quotes:

★“I was a forty-year-old guy, I’d had dozens of relationships in the past. Yes, I enjoyed sex—a lot—but what I’d learned in all the years I’d dated was that an emotional bond and friendship were far more important than bumping uglies. What good was great sex if you didn’t connect with your partner emotionally?”

★ Then, he removed his hoodie and placed it on the foot of my bed.

★ "All the rest of the day and long into the night, I never released Raven’s hoodie. It was the only thing keeping me grounded. The only touch of love he could offer in the shattered world that surrounded me.

My Favorite Lyrics of Overjoyed (referenced in the epilogue):

Maybe you have your reasons
Maybe you're scared, you're feeling down
Are you crying when there's no one around?
Oh then maybe, maybe if you hold me baby
Let me come over I would tell you secrets nobody knows
I can not overstate it, I will be overjoyed

And if you want, we'll share this life
Anytime you need a friend, I'm gonna be by your side
When nobody understands you, well I do 🥺
So maybe maybe, let me hold you baby 🥺😭😭😭🥰😭😭

[4.8] Haphephobia - a fear of touching or of being touched.

Ahhhhh my favorite one so far! Each installment follows a similar recipe so this being the third in the series, well, I could predict for the most part how the plot would progress and what setbacks they'd face, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment because the execution was *chef's kiss*.

I'm a complete sucker for romantic relationships built on a foundation of friendship and trust, and the limits on physical touch undeniably amplified the experience.

When it comes down to it, there's still an instalove element of sorts, but their progression from strangers to friends to lovers hit differently with the emphasis placed almost entirely on their emotional bond and path to mutual understanding.

There were a handful of scenes that had my heart squeezing in my chest and me running around in circles because what else does one do when the MCs are being SO GOSH DARN WHOLESOME??
Using the momentum I'd created, forcing myself further, despite his close proximity, I lifted my fingers to my lips, kissed them, and placed them feather-light against his own.

He sighed and closed his eyes; his breath ghosted my hand, and he kissed them back ever so delicately. When he opened his eyes again, I pressed his kiss to my lips in return.

SO SOFT!!! Indirect kisses ftw 😍

And of course, the scenes with Raven's hoodie.

Add on how Raven asked his sister's kids to teach him how to play cat's cradle.....

At this point only gifs can accurately represent my feelings

----
A quote to describe Ireland:
Instead of progress, he saw constant failure. Instead of being proud of what he'd achieved, he focused on all the things too far out of reach.

(UHHH I see myself in this and I don't like it 😂)

Ireland's fixation on achieving an illusory "normalcy" while also surrendering to the "impossibility" of a lifelong relationship (because to him everyone will eventually give up and leave 😔) begets plenty of frustration and self-hatred.

Five steps forward, one giant leap back—his slow progress demoralizes him and at times has him pushing himself too far, too fast.

The situation with his mother was heartbreaking. She'd gone through hell and back with Ireland's abusive father and consequently forced her fear of touch onto Ireland from an early age. Now jump to present day, and on one hand, she's a major trigger for him, but on the other, he feels an obligation to visit her (even though she doesn't recognize him due to her worsening Alzheimer's), otherwise he's eaten up by this all-consuming guilt for neglecting her.

As for his questionable choice of profession, I could understand his initial reasons for pursuing a nursing career (wanting to learn more about his phobia, believing he could conquer his fear of touch by sheer willpower and exposure, kind of like some improperly executed immersion therapy), but as someone who's gone through nursing school, it's incredibly hands-on and you are more than often right up in the patient's space, so I have no idea how he passed clinicals 😅 Not sure why he insists on working on the floor either when he could've fairly easily pivoted into a health admin/case manager/etc. role in the meantime BUT I DIGRESS.

All in all, I loved both Ireland and Raven (I cut out my gushing over Raven but just know that I'd marry someone like him in a heartbeat LOL), and it was a treat watching the two of them grow into something more. Never have gentle, soft touches felt so intimate and beautiful 🥺

And as always, Adam Gold's narration delivered and brought the story to life!

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes & tags down below.

People assumed I didn’t want touch, but that wasn’t true. If I didn’t want it, I wouldn’t have spent years in therapy trying to achieve it.

I might actually love this one just as much as Cravings of the Heart from the same series, which I didn’t expect to happen, because that book still hasn’t left my mind. I read a review of this book with a quote that made me tear up, and I was immediately sold. This story is heartwarming, heartbreaking, and just really beautiful. I really enjoyed the organic feeling of how their relationship evolved. The slow build of trust to become friends, and then Ireland slowly letting himself be vulnerable again and let Raven in even further. They didn’t have a smooth ride by any means, but they both fought tooth and nail to make it work, and Raven especially was so patient and kind, even when he was hurting.

His shoulders shook as he wept. My hand twitched, itching to reach out. It was physically painful watching his heart break and knowing I couldn’t comfort him.

Nicky James is so freaking talented. She makes me connect with the characters within the first pages, and have me crying just as fast. Very highly recommend.

Also, I can’t even imagine the pain of wanting to touch, to feel comfort, to be touched by the people you love, and not being able to. To have people walk away eventually, because you inevitably have setbacks. My heart broke for Ireland.

He said he could touch when things were going well. I’d live for those moments if he gave me a chance.

Consider this a warning, this book will wreck you, test you, challenge you and you will love every single moment of it!

Ireland & Raven are one of the most incredible love stories I’ve read! So unique and powerful. Their struggle and perseverance was out of this world. This isn’t a balanced relationship, and I know it never will be, but the way they melt together and find a way to be happy with that, was incredible well written.

The intimate scenes were so special, full of timid touches and light whispers, but consider this another warning… these boys take their time but wow when they do, immeasurable tension released! Absolutely love it. This was the most rewarding slow burn ever!

While I was expecting a different ending, I believe this was the realistic one and I can totally accept and adore them for it. Nothing is impossible🖤

While we have to address Ireland struggles and victories in his tragic story… Raven,Raven, Raven I will NEVER EVER forget this precious man. Our incredible patient, selfless Stone Angel 🪽 🖤🐦‍⬛. H never gave up, never, even when most people would have.. There’s so much pain in this book, such heartbreaking dark moments that just stole my breath away, but when they pass, the light is so pure🙏

I looooved this one and I'm starting to love the series as well. Nicky has done an amazing job researching all the phobias and making me fall in love with all the characters. All these books are not an easy read but I loved learning more and more with each book I read.

I was convinced some people got a map to follow. “Here,” it read. “Here is the direct path to normal.” Mine must have got lost in the mail.

This is the first book in the series that I read about phobias, and damn, Nicky knows how to write them.
Ireland is afraid of being touched, a phobia that he developed due to his childhood, and now he tries to live with it, but is it very difficult, especially in his work (what a complicated job he chose) and in romantic life? A disaster.
I feel that Nicky handles the connection between the two very well, it is a slow development, with baby steps. It has anguish, like a lot, but completely understandable.
Ireland has given up hope of finding someone to stay with him, knowing that at any moment, he can go backwards. He struggle a lot, but Raven, oh, he's so patient and persevering, he tells him that if they back down, he'll be there to rebuild it.
I really liked this one, obviously, there aren't many steamy scenes, but that's okay, making love isn't always what you think of and Raven proves it to Ireland so well🤭

4.5 stars rounded up for the narration.

I absolutely loved this book.
Ireland's phobia is truly heartbreaking. How much do we truly touch other people, people we love, without really thinking about it.
Intimacy is instinct and touch is part of that.
For Ireland.. touch is pain and wrong and hurt.

Enter Raven, the perfect boyfriend who has patience by the buckets. I adored him.
This book is completely relationship driven as with all the books in this series and I loved seeing them IN a relationship as they work out the kinks.

Adam Gold is just perfect in this one. Love love love his narration.

Oh man, I love this series. This one is my favorite so far. And also the angstiest if you ask me.

Ireland has a phobia of touch. Touch is such a simple and even necessary thing for humans, and therefore his struggle is brutal.
James’s writing is never fails to amaze me, and like always, you can count on HEA.

Highly recommended 🎉

I have loved this series so far...and Ireland and Raven are no exception.
You know when someone says, they were made for one another?
Yeah.
Ireland and Raven were made for each other.
They are perfectly suited.
Raven understands Ireland in a way no one has ever before.
Fear of touch...wow, that's a hard one.
Not easy by any means but a powerful story of love.

Highly recommend!

Ireland really had to grow on me.
I wasn't really thrilled from the first moment I started reading this. In fact, I couldn't connect with the MC's, nor with the story. I had a hard time understanding Ireland's phobia and all his triggers. I truly did not understand why he pushed himself so far to become a nurse, while he couldn't handle all the touching involved.
I love Nicky James, I love everything she writes and I was afraid this would be my first book by her that I disliked. I decided not to give up yet, though.
And then something happened, I don't even remember where, or why or how, but Ireland grew on me, I mean, REALLY grew on me. I started feeling for him, I started to see why he pushed himself and why his life was so, so difficult to live. And I started to admire Raven for his patience, for his understanding. For the love he had for Ireland and his determination to give their relationship a chance, despite the fact that Ireland kept telling him it wasn't possible. Ever.
They came from far, took small steps at the time. Ireland had a major fallback, but the epilogue was so sweet, so promising for their future together...it really moved me to tears.
So, once again, Nicky James has proved that she is a magnificent author, who knows her way with words and emotions that feel real and touch you in all the right places.
I loved it and would really recommend reading it.

5 touching stars 🥶

I’m so good with words! 🥶🥶🥶 okay, I’ve had my fun. Lol... So wow... another phobia I’ve never heard of. I honestly didn’t know how the author was going to pull this one off but by gosh, this was challenging, painful, but also full of love.

Raven was a convincing carer. I mean, I kinda made a jab at the guy in the first book, whatshisface, that it was a tad bit unrealistic that he could carry on being a carer without having a breakdown himself. But Raven? It was as natural as breathing.

I can see how Ireland came to procure his phobia and as usual, the circumstances broke my heart. I wish I can say his daily struggles are real but then again, every single person who deals with phobia has real daily struggles so that’s a moot point.

This series has definitely been eye opening and informative but also full of hope and love. Much love to the author! 🙌🙌🙌

Ireland & Raven
4.5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5🎧

My heart broke for Ireland and everything he had been through. It's not something that just goes away and he will be dealing with it for the rest of his life. All because someone hurt someone else, that ripple effect is strong.

When he meets Raven I really wasn't sure what was going to happen. I thought maybe friends, but I didn't expect for things to hop off like they did. But I was sooo here for it!

I loved how Raven let Ireland come to him, how he was open to everything that was going on. He never gave up and he was always there, it was a great story of hope and love.

Again, the narration was perfect!

Reread/listen

I still stand by the my original review, this book is my favorite and Raven and Ireland are just so perfect for one another.

I will say having Adam Gold narrate these books really makes the experience that much better! He does an amazing job and its like experiencing these books anew.

Highly recommend the audiobooks for this series you won't regret it!

4.5-5 stars

Honestly this one is my favorite out of all the books so far. Just thinking about what Ireland has to go through on a daily basis because of his phobia is heartbreaking.

Ireland is such a strong character and I love love love how patient Raven is.

I wished we got more interaction with Ravens family and band mates but overall this book was great!

Again, I did not read this book. I listened. And I think that’s why I feel the way I do about it. Adam Gold is an absolutely brilliant narrator, and I’m pretty sure I could listen to him reading a phone book at this rate. But his emotions and sound effects just bring a story to a whole new level. To the point where I won’t be reading the next couple books, I’ll wait for the audio. The angst in this got a bit tiring, but that’s what James does best I guess.

Haphephobia: A fear of touching or of being touched.

After witnessing a few behaviors of Ireland, whom we encountered at the hospital during Finn's surgery, I figured out what his phobia was, and I've been eagerly waiting his book ever since.
Just as I expected, it didn't disappoint me!
Abandoned and heartbroken by the people in his life, Ireland doesn't want to see Raven as more than a friend, but Raven is determined to prove him wrong that he is not going anywhere and he is unlike anyone else.
The intimacy Ireland and Raven share with almost not touching to each other was beautifully portrayed.
I really loved it.

Nicky James is quickly becoming an author who can do no wrong for me. At first, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy a series about phobias, but four books in? I'm sold! Each book is interesting, emotional, heated in places, and overall satisfying to read. This book is no different. Recommended!

This was beautiful. I loved that this story begins while Ireland has already been in therapy for several years. So many books with mental health issues show the individual struggling to accept help and then finally starting therapy at the end; there aren't enough that show the work of therapy and how healing can be a bumpy road, so I greatly appreciate that. The romance was so sweet and intimate, even with so little sex (understandably). We need more authors who show how intimacy can be meaningful and real, even beyond the typical definition of what sex is. These two were perfect for each other. There are several scenes in the book where Raven sings specific songs that I wasn't personally familiar with, so I looked them up on YouTube while reading. They brought tears to my eyes because of how meaningful they were to the story. I highly suggest listening to the songs while you read.
