The Revolution Of Jack Frost

Rate this book
No one inside the snow globe knows that Morozoko Industries is controlling their weather, testing them to form a stronger race that can survive the fall out from the bombs being dropped in the outside world—all they know is that they must survive the harsh Winter that lasts a month and use the few days of Spring, Summer, and Fall to gather enough supplies to survive.

When the seasons start shifting, Genesis and her boyfriend, Jack, know something is going on. As their team begins to find technology that they don’t have access to inside their snow globe of a world, it begins to look more and more like one of their own is working against them.

Genesis soon discovers Morozoko Industries is to blame, but when a foreign enemy tries to destroy their weather program to make sure their destructive life-altering bombs succeed in destroying the outside world, their only chance is to shut down the machine that is spinning out of control and save the lives of everyone inside the bunker--at any cost.

I received this eARC from Bleeding Ink Publishing on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of this book in any way.

You know those books that are so generic that it's clear the author just wanted to have a book written but didn't care what it was about as long as it sold? Well, this is the opposite. It's an author who really wanted to tell a story but had no idea how to actually write a book.

Obligatory Summary

Genesis and her band of faceless masses all live in a world with unpredictable weather, left there by some unseen entity to fight for their survival.

Our world runs in cycles that change like a person shaking one of the snow globes we found in the storage room in the bunker when we were kids. Two days of Spring, a week of Summer, four days of Fall, followed by a month of Winter. Most days, I wouldn't mind if our world fell off whatever shelf it is sitting on, smashing the cycle.

She and her boyfriend, Jack, as well as some of her close friends all know that things are changing--Winter is getting longer, Summer shorter, and things are even more unpredictable than ever. But what if they have a spy, secretly relaying information back to whatever force put them there? And what if it's someone Genesis loves?

The Writing and Worldbuilding

Sounds kinda cool, right?

Wrong.

The book is so nonsensical that most of that was taken from the book's description. It isn't that it's a terrible story--it's far too simple to be truly bad--but it is poorly executed, with dismal pacing and utterly dreadful syntax. The verb tense constantly changed, the sentences were run-ons and awkward. Dialogue was...okay, but only for a few characters. Time passing was imperceptible (apparently the book takes place over a few days but it felt like a month at least) and the number of people in the bunker was apparently over 200 but it felt like there was 20 people max. And the retroactive exposition. Like suddenly introducing things 90 pages in that were supposed to be present since the very beginning.

It crashes into the wall making Jack jump as high as the water in the river over the rocks in the waterfall in Spring right after the snow melts.

There is a certain beauty to how bad it is.

The world itself made absolutely no sense. How on earth was anything able to survive with enough seasons in a year to equal 8 years? Plants don't just grow overnight. Animals require gestation (which takes time) to have offspring. There's a reason why ecosystems are a thing and why they're fragile. It is literally impossible for the entire premise of this book to exist.

It really just felt like I was reading a first draft that had never been presented to an editor or beta-readers. It had potential to not be terrible, but unfortunately, it was terrible.

He comes to me, quickly and slowly all at once.

The Characters

Genesis be like

Honestly, she's super bland. Like, extremely bland. And she is obsessed with Jack in the weirdest way. Like, thinking that his constant evasiveness is "adorable".

Jack is a creep with a lot of issues but I did appreciate the small degree of depth he brought.

Nathaniel, though, is apparently Jack's best friend even though he's consistently death glaring him, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he had murdered Jack.

Azra was really the only character I genuinely liked! She should have been the main character. She actually has a personality.

Eustace was introduced more than halfway through as if I already knew who he was and then wasn't really ever explained.

Conclusion

Just read Maze Runner. It isn't good but at least it's coherent.

Y'all this book is so bad I can't believe I wasted a full day on it. Also this is a long roast and I'm glad it's out of my system.

This is easily the worst book I've read all year. Yes it was worse than Catwoman and I didn't think anything could be as worse as Catwoman. I requested this from Netgalley solely on the fact that it had Jack Frost in the title, and then the premise sounded nice as well. It sounded really YA-ish if you know what I mean, along the lines of a company is trying to ruin the world and these teenagers must save it. But it wasn't even bad because of that, it was bad just because the characters sucked.

So essentially, a whole community of people live in this globe thing that changes seasons a lot, but it's Winter most of the time. And when the book starts it's Winter and the characters are afraid it'll never turn Spring. The main character Genesis, or Gen for short, is by far the worst character I've ever read about. She says things out loud that shouldn't be said out loud ... like it could be raining and this girl is like "wow do you SEE THIS? It's RAINING!" Uhm duh cause y'all are wet no crap it's raining. Or the door will be closing and instead of just THINKING "oh no the door is closing let me run to it," she announces to the whole freaking crew that "The door is ClOsInG I must RUN towards this closing door." No bye you're cancelled. ANYWAYS the weather changes and it's like oh wow I'm not surprised and they get their food but OH NO the seasons are changing too fast and all of a sudden over night, it's Winter again. All the while, her boyfriend Jack Frost, is missing in the middle of the night. And this dude is telling her "I have secrets I can't tell you." Nope, you're going to let your boyfriend disappear in the night while all this is happening and just accept that him having secrets is CUTE? Bye. And then okay she's climbing in this tree with her friend because it's all of a sudden Spring again or Summer I can't remember. Her friend runs into a door in the middle of the tree and falls out of the tree. And SHE's so shocked to see this door, and inside this door there's a tablet that has when the seasons are changing. BUT instead of logically blaming it on her boyfriend who is disappearing in the night, they blame it on this dude who in no way is involved with the weather changing. It's like Jack Frost is this perfect angel and nothing but good can come from him and it's trash.

So really the plot is, there's a government that is dropping bombs that change the weather and killing people. And this dude put all these people in a globe and made them test dummies to this system he made where the weather can't be changed and they can all live. Of course Jack Frost is tied all into this and it was a decent story line but you'll see what ruined it ahead.

And then the romance in this is High Key Problematic. Jack Frost calls her "woman" a lot. He is always saying "stop talking woman," or "get over here woman." Bro no that's not cool. And he is very rude to Gen at times. At random times though, he'll be very stoic and say "Nothing will ever happen to you Gen, I will always protect and love you babe, you're my queen." And Gen is just annoyingly dumb. She is all like "wow we lost one of the babies but JACK FROSTS ABS ARE LOOKING MIGHTY DELICIOUS THROUGH HIS EXTRA TIGHT SHIRT." And then she says stuff like "Yes Jack is missing in the night but he won't know what's going on, his muscles look so good in that shirt, we could all die." I was so annoyed and just wanted to shoot my eyeballs out. And they just kiss and make out at the worst times, one of the kids got lost in the compound but you know what will save the lost girl? KISSING FOR A GOOD FIVE MINUTES BEFORE RESUMING THE SEARCH. Their romance was gross and I hated it.

Now okay this story concept is really good, like wow these people don't know a company is trying to kill them so another company hid these people in a globe to help them live. Heck yeah give me that mysterious government is evil plot line and I will eat it UP. But what killed the story line is the fact that Gen and Jack kiss like EVERY TWO PAGES and are always talking about each other when the world is literally ending. A good plot was utterly destroyed by the romance.

NOW the Side Characters weren't that bad honestly. They were very important to the story, but also they were stupid. Every time Jack and Gen were kissing (all the time) the side characters were all like five year olds "OOoooOO they're kissing, so gross get out of TOWN." Every. Single. Freaking. Time. And they also didn't believe that Jack was affiliated with this company when he was DISAPPEARING at the random hours of the night. They all viewed him as god and it was so annoying. It was such an obvious plot point but all the characters are dumb.

I don't usually like to say writing is trash. Because I think there is potential here for a good book it was just ruined by the romance. But another thing that really annoyed me is the fact that there was so many similes and metaphors. Those things are good when they're lyrically woven into a book, but in here they killed the writing and made sentences go on for hours when they didn't need too. I was beyond frustrated with like two sentence paragraphs because "the frozen lake was like Jack's white blond hair, his cold body, the icy snow, and like the wildness of winter." I couldn't handle it.

I'm glad this whole experience is over and I can move past it. I just needed somewhere to vent how much I disliked this book.

I HOPE Y'ALL ARE READING GREAT BOOKS THOUGH>

I have to be honest and say that as soon as I saw Jack Frost in the title I was inmediately drown to it and I didn't care about anything else 😂. Although it wasn't my favorite, I quite enjoyed it.

I think what I loved the most was the relationships, not only romantic ones but also the friendships. I don't remember loving characters as soon as I loved these ones 😍.

description

At the beginning my favorite was Jack even though at the same time I thought I couldn't trust him, he is just so sweet with kids (that's what always makes my heart melt). Conserning his relationship with Genesis, I thought sometimes they were really good to each other because they showed how much they cared but other times Jack was just so jealous and acting as a caveman -.-

Genesis by herself was kind of clueless, like it was very obvious the ending but she just couldn't see it. However, I liked how after knowing the secret she doesn't forgive easily and realises what the mature thing to do is.

Then all the other characters felt very real, they were kind of childish from time to time but I still have some friends that are like that and I adore them so how could I not like these ones? :P Moreover, they were all thinking what was best for everyone around them, I don't think there were more than two characters that only were thinking about themselves.

On the other hand, something I didn't like was how unrealistic some discoveries felt.

description

The ending was quite predictable. Don't get me wrong, I almost cried mainly because of the pain others were going through but it was very obvious.

Yeahnah, I must confess my self disappointed in this book :(

I was ready for a fantasy Jack Frost story retelling, but turns out it's kinda more like a Maze Runner ripoff?? In the dystopian genre??

BUT WHY DOES THE TITLE SOUND SO FANTASY IF IT'S NOT?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Also, there is a Jack in this story, but I feel like the Frost bit is kinda hmmmmmmmmmm

The romance was sweet... and so sO SO cringyyyyyyyyyyy
But I mean... At lease there was no love triangle  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And the main character was BLANDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!! Was not a fan... Also, the name Genesis threw me off. Not sure why, just felt really weird...

Plot was predictable...

BUT I did finish the book, so I guess some small part of me enjoyed it. I have about 10 Netgalley titles atm, and haven't been able to finish any, so finishing this was a big deal!

I REALLY WANTED TO LIKE THIS, Jack Frost is SO underdone, but it just didn't work for me D:

Many thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with a review copy! All opinions are my own.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book!

I'm going to admit, at first with this book I was rolling my eyes at the cheesy romance and waiting for it to pick up, but when it finally did, I found myself really enjoying it! I actually really liked the romantic message; the ability to love someone but not agree with what they are doing, or be able to support it. Sometimes you have to let love go and see what happens, and I did like this difference. There were a few plot holes, and also this edition being an ARC had a few spelling errors. I also felt there were times when things were written too simply; they did this, this happened, then this react. Rinse and repeat. But essentially, I felt like this was a solid read and should present better with some polish.

I can't say I've read many Jack Frost retellings specifically, but I have read many retellings and as they go this one wasn't too bad. I'd recommend this for people who enjoy YA fantasy retellings. Four stars (rounded up from 3.5 because I'm generous and I liked that epilogue)

This was a very cool idea...it just wasn't well executed.
A group of people living in a compound unaware to the fact that they are a part of a science experiment. The weather in this "snow globe" is controlled by Morozoko Industries in a desperate attempt to improve the way humans react, prepare and survive different weather scenarios.

While the concept drew me in, I found the writing so awkward it was difficult to get emotionally invested with any part of the book.
Most of the time it felt like I was reading a progress report instead of a story. It's all very clinical feeling the way everything was overly described and listed instead of emotionally relayed or allowing the reader to paint a part of the picture. There was no room for imagination as a result.

I have seen a lot of people say they felt "ripped off" that this is not more of a Jack Frost story in the "traditional" sense of the character. I disagree.
It's a super neato idea...just needs more development.

In the acknowledgments she mentions this will be a series and that she has already done a short story for accompaniment. I'm not real keen on continuing in this world.
Despite the captivating idea it was very tedious to finish.
Thank you NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this ARC.

First of all, the cover's gorgeous.
Believe me, I've tried to get past page 68 pages. I even took a break from the book, thinking it was me. It's the writing and the main characters really annoyed me especially Genesis. I could not connect with the characters. I mean with the sentence, "She put on a soft smile for him." This is a girl who crushes after a guy. Sorry she would've not have to make an effort to smile softly for a guy if there's such a thing. Just not realistic. The writing felt forced to me. I DNF this book after 68 pages. I'm sorry, I couldn't handle it anymore.
But the cover is is so breathtaking! 1 Star is for the book cover.

Since 2012, when Rise of the Guardians were made, Jack Frost is a known character. One of my beloved character, to be true, so when I found this book, I knew that I need this kind of retelling. But, to be honest, I'm truly disappointed.

At first it looked great, but it's just another story similar to The Maze Runner, with the difference this is without any logic. The characters are living in a snow globe where weather's changing however it wants. The winter lasts as the longest, so they need to harvest as much food as possible during spring, summer and fall. And that's everything you'll understand.
I was looking forward to seeing this kind of world, but it was just so boring. The characters don't work like they should. All of them are introduced just at random, as Genesis, the main character, suddenly needs a word with them, so I was just like - wait, when have they spoken about Red? I didn't understand the system of leadership, from the context I thought that Adam is the leader, but then everybody listened to Jack. WHY. And he himself was such a dull character, same as Genesis. They don't have the soul book characters should have to make themselves more real. There's also a romance going on between Jack and Genesis from the very start, but for me it didn't look like a real relationship. It was just some weird friendship with one-sentence-kissing. The romance wasn't working, the friendship wasn't working - so what should you want from characters then?

The world, the plot and the characters would need more explanations to make it easier for reader to read. I ended near the half of the book - as a reader you should ask questions what'll happen next, but I wanted to know just: What the hell is going on?! The plot was so boring, without any surprises or action, without any explanation what they were doing. The author's style didn't suit me well. I'm so sorry to rate this book so bad, because I was really looking forward to reading a good book with Jack Frost between the main characters. Although I hate unfinishing books and not reading them till the end, I don't have enough nerves with TRoJF.
I love the cover, though. That's really nice.

Huge thanks to NetGalley for providing me an arc ebook for an honest review.

Thank you Netgalley for an arc of The Revolution of Jack Frost for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Initially, I was going to wait to review the book closer to the publishing date, BUT, The Revolution of Jack Frost proved to be cliched af! I’m disappointed in it. Here’s why:

I made predictions about the story and its progression as I began the book…I DID NOT THINK THAT MY PREDICTIONS WOULD COME TRUE…

♦️ Dystopian World ✔️

♦️ Lack of World Building ✔️

♦️ One dimensional protagonist ✔️

♦️ No buildup to a romantic relationship ✔️

♦️ Government Facilities ✔️

♦️ Test Subjects ✔️

♦️ Too many random characters ✔️

*✭˚・゚✧*・゚*✭˚・゚✧*・゚* *✭˚・゚✧*・゚*✭˚・゚✧*・゚**✭˚・゚✧*・゚*✭˚・゚✧*・゚*

The Revolution of Jack Frost proved to be the MOST cliched book that I read in 2018. I didn’t want to be a Negative Nancy, but this book can be avoided. I was hoping this arc was going to be a Jack Frost retelling, but not this…because this book is extremely predictable. The reading process was not fun, and it was quite dreadful to continue the book. I almost dnfed it, but I managed to finish it…(╬ಠ益ಠ)

The concept was interesting, but I felt that Jack should have been the main protagonist…out of all these randomly selected characters introduced in this series, Jack was the ONLY one to get some sort of personality! The story is told in Genesis’ pov, and SHE HAD NO PERSONALITY BESIDES BEING THE GIRLFRIEND OF JACK…I know more about Jack than I do about Genesis. What’s the point of having a MC when the reader hardly knows anything about their interests, ideas, quirks????? Sadly, this book left a bitter taste in my mouth…

Most disappointing Jack Frost retelling ever…but the prologue have the best opening.

He was a force of nature. He could warm your soul like the sun and then bury you in ice the next second. He was more destructive than any other universal element or could ever be. It was his way, to be like a hurricane crashing upon the shores, or lightning splintering everything in its path. He was a force. But he was my force. And in the end, it didn’t matter, because he disappeared, just like the weather always does. Here for one brief moment and gone the next. His name was Jack and his love for me was like a flood, now frozen over.

*I was provided with an ARC of this book through Netgalley, in exchange for my honest opinion. All quotes used may be subject to change upon publication.

I don’t know what I was expecting from this, but it definitely took me by surprise. I went straight into this without refreshing my memory of what it was about, and so given the title, I was expecting some sort of magical element to this. I quickly realised that this wasn’t going to be the case and I got over that pretty quickly. I’m also not entirely convinced about how this is related to Jack Frost if I’m honest, the opening paragraph made me think it could of been though “He could warm your soul like the sun and then bury you in ice the next second. He was more destructive than any universal element has ever been or could ever be. It was his way, to be like a hurricane crashing upon the shores, or lightning splintering everything in its path.” This writing is beautiful and easily made me think, yes, this is Jack Frost! But the rest of the writing and the overall story didn’t reflect this, so I think the title is a bit misleading. Having said that I still enjoyed this.

Our main protagonist was Genesis and she and I got a long quite well. She was a different type of fantasy protagonist than I am used to, being that she didn’t necessarily have anything that set her apart from anyone else, she was a normal teenage girl. The most special thing about her was her relationship with Jack and that’s not to cancel her out, it’s just that everyone seemed to see Jack as a leader and therefore more intrigue surrounded him. Genesis was a good character though and I liked how she actually showed a range of emotions, she was confident without being cocky, she had everyone’s best interest at heart, she was witty and was very much in love with her boyfriend, but wasn’t afraid to tell him when he was wrong.

Whereas Genesis was a more laid back character, Jack was a force, whose presence was always felt. He had such a lightheartedness about him but also stood out, he was comfortable in his place in the group and his relationship. Both him and Genesis bounced off of each other a lot, there was banter a plenty with these two. A lot of people found their relationship to be too cheesy, but I didn’t find that at all. I thought their relationship was ridiculously sweet and I actually didn’t mind that they were constantly touching and talking to each other, a lot of the time we are just told that characters are in a relationship and that they love each other. With this one we got actual proof, in how they were with each other in day to day life and let’s not forget that they spend almost every second of every day together and have for the last 14 years!

There were several great side characters, but there were so many of them that I found myself forgetting or confusing who they were. However, the ones that I remember/like most were Azra and Red. Azra was very funny and I appreciated all of her smart remarks, Red was adorable and I really hope that they find their way into each others arms because I totally ship it! There was apparently around 200 people in the bunker that they lived in, of all ages. They had become a family to each other as many of them don’t even remember where they came from. They all looked after each other and I especially loved how they took care of the children, Jack in particular was so sweet and it made me like him even more. They never know when their family is going to expand though, as they literally just find children when they are out searching for food, that they then take in.

On to the actual plot, I was intrigued from the very first page and I was gripped throughout most of it. I love some sort of mystery in a book and I was desperate to find out what on earth was going on. They have to fend for themselves in this ever changing landscape, the best way I can describe it is very extreme camping with unpredictable weather changes. They had some bits and pieces like the bunker they were in, some clothing and a water purifier I believe, but they were pretty much living off the land, at the mercy of whatever ‘nature’ decided to do. They usually have a pattern of seasons, maybe a week of winter, one day of spring and two days of summer. However, things have started to become more unpredictable, with seasons changing overnight “I gasp “It’s Summer… what are you talking about?” “It switched, Gen.” “To Winter? We didn’t even have Fall?” “I don’t know, Genesis. Maybe Fall happened last night?” His voice raises in pitch at the suggestion, hoping it satisfies me. “I couldn’t tell you, but when I went to leave just now, I found all of the snow”. They carry on with basically trying to stay alive, which I actually enjoyed, then they find technology (in a really random way and place) that they’ve never seen before and Genesis in particular, sets out to find out who is out there and how much of their lives they are controlling. They even suspect each other of being spies for these ‘others’.

Once they find out who’s been up to what, the book wasn’t as interesting to me, I didn’t see where the story was going to go from there, because to me that was the main drive of the plot, finding out what was really going on. We find out at around 70% in I think and the rest is just them trying to figure out how to fix something that went wrong. From this bit up until the ending I was quite confused as I couldn’t quite picture what was going on and I don’t think that the ‘foreign enemy’ was really established. The epilogue hinted that there may be more to this story, but I’m not sure where this story can go and think that this might of been better ending on them just finding out what was going on. I did have issues with the plot after the big reveals and also with the writing at times in general, some bits of a sentence seemed to be written in past tense and other bits in present tense and descriptions were too long at times. Despite the problems I had I enjoyed this for the most part and so I wouldn’t deter others from picking it up and don’t think it deserves some of the lower ratings it has gotten, because it wasn’t bad at all. Although, after reading the synopsis, I’ve realised that we’re pretty much told most of what I found to be so intriguing anyway, so I don’t think I would of enjoyed this as much if I’d read the synopsis beforehand.

This book provoked mixed feelings from me, some parts were exceptionally bad and other parts were really gripping? A clumsy execution to what is otherwise a really intriguing story premise.

In the Snow Globe, as Jack calls it, the seasons aren't what you would expect. Harsh Winter's last for a month, whilst instantaneous Spring and Summer's last for a week. The unusual weather climate is enemy number one for the people who live in the bunker, and when it starts to get weirder, Gen and Jack want to know why.

This book drew me in initially because of the lack of explanation and backstory as to what was going on. I felt like the dynamics of the relationships weren't at all clear to me, and felt that I couldn't put it down until I understood fully what was happening.

I've mentioned above how the execution of the plot is clumsy, here's an example: The reader doesn't even find out that there are close to two hundred people altogether in the bunker to look after. It's fine that the characters were the same ones to pop up, in fact that seemed to only be the consistent aspect of this book, but I feel I would have better understood the complexities of the situation if the fact that there were two hundred people in the snow globe to look after was established a lot earlier.

I also found that there were a lot of deep profound metaphors and similes that didn't seem to fit with the overall narrative; the main character Gen is very brusque and action-ready, to be mulling on how Jack is like an Ice Prince for me feels like the author was forcing introspection that didn't fit naturally with the 'strong woman leader' type.

"He was a force of nature. He could warm your soul like the sun and then bury you in ice the next second. He was more destructive than any universal element has ever been or could ever be. It was his way, to be like a hurricane crashing upon the shores, or lightning splintering everything in its path. He was a force. And in the end, it didn't matter, because he disappeared, just like the weather always does. Here for one brief moment and gone the next. His name was Jack and his love for me was like a flood, now frozen over."

I did quite like the witty dialogue that bounced between Gen and Jack's joking personalities, it was a little cheesy at times, but to be honest, their entire relationship was a little problematic for me.

Here's a scenario for you:
You're in a snow globe with your romantic interest, you are struck with the idea that you are being watched and that somebody else is controlling the weather. Your boyfriend sneaks out at midnight all the time and you literally know he has secrets from you, because he tells you as much and disappears continuously. Would you naturally become suspiscious?????

If you answered yes, well done, you are a normal human being who understands that secretively sneaking out at midnight all the time is not an ordinary thing to do. If you answered no, then you must be the most trusting soul ever and I am a mere cynical, raving woman.

So yeah, although I wasn't particularly comfortable with their romance, the plot itself is pretty ace actually, it's immersive and I read this in two sittings.

So I had one main problem throughout the beginning of the book was the seasons; two days of Spring, a week of Summer, four days of Fall and a month of Winter. It literally makes no sense, even when you find out that they're basically in a snow globe where the weather is being controlled. Does it mean their years are only 2 months long? Or do they have multiple of each season in each normal year? IT MAKES NO SENSE!

Throughout the whole book the main character, Genesis gets on my nerves so much so that I almost stopped reading the book on more than one occasion. Yes girl, we get your boyfriend is super hot and you love him, but I'm so done with teenage girls being written this way in books. Actual real life girls need characters to look up to who are badass, not brainless girls swooning over guys 24/7. Secondly, even when she finds out that he has been lying to her practically her whole life, she only takes like three days to forgive him???

I have many questions that weren't answered in this book but my brain can only pull two out right now;
- What has gone on outside the globe? I mean okay this one is pretty obvious in a sense because we know there's war and blah blah blah, but what has actually happened outside to lead to this place happening?
- Why is everyone so blase when they find out Jack has been lying and going behind their backs controlling the weather all these years? If I had just found out something like that I'd go full physco  on him.

It's safe to say I don't think I would recommend this to anyone, however if there was a sequel I would need to read it just to see if I got answers.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Book review: The revolution of Jack Frost by K. M. Robinson (4 stars)

The revolution of Jack Frost by K. M. Robinson
Genre: YA, Science fiction-dystopian, Romance
Rating: 4/5 stars

(Review)
(DISCLAIMER: This review is based on my opinion only.)

No one inside the Globe knows that someone else is controlling their weather, preparing and experimenting on them to form a stronger race that can withstand the raging war outside. Genesis and her boyfriend Jack work with the other residents in the globe to prepare for long winters, making use of the other seasons to gather supplies. But when they find technology that none of them have access to, they begin to suspect someone in their midst is working against them.

The world building was initially confusing (since I started reading the book without looking at the synopsis again), but I understood as the story progressed. The pacing was slightly slow at first, but picked up in the 2nd half of the book.

Imagine the Hunger games mixed with the Maze Runner combined with tons of weather problems, this is what this book entails. The residents race against time and the weather for survival.

I love the concept and retelling on Jack Frost. I liked the story progression and how it played out. I was heartbroken by the ending but I really liked Genesis as a character as she is brave and willingly takes on a ton of responsibility.

I spent the evening reading this book. The title sucked me in to checking it out. My bad. I could not for the life of me figure out what the heck I was reading the first few chapters. I've read stories based on snow globes, and the people in them, as picture books, and some how hoped this was an grown up version of the same. I mean, really, Jack Frost. Well, it wasn't. I can't really say too much without giving away the story, but basically a big company is behind the snow globe these folks are the guinea pigs in as the outside world is being destroyed. To say I was disappointed is a vast under statement. Sorry. I am sure there are lots of readers out there who will enjoy the tale. Just not me.
I received a Kindle ARC from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.

Ridiculous and predictable. Boring with terrible dialogue and pda that actually made me gag. Author couldn’t decide if she was writing a cheesy romance, an action adventure with really bad scientific explanations, a survival story or crappy dystopia. Just awful. Had to read it to professionally review it. This is going to be a tough review to write.

So I'm not sure how to write a summary for this book without spoiling it. The synopsis of this book spoils the plot but whatever.

I hated this book. The writing was terrible and basic, and the majority of the story is told through dialogue. There's not a lot of description and the characters say everything they say or discover or think. It was just bad. Also there's something mentioned in the synopsis which doesn't happen until two-thirds of the way in it. So if you read that before picking the book, you're sat waiting for it to happen. The characters were annoying and bland. Everything about this book was just bad. I do not recommend this book at all.

I'll start easy.

Oh the regrets.

I'm a very simple girl, I see a Jack Frost retelling, I request.

So the basic gist of this book is that the characters are living in a snow globe where weather's changing however it wants. The winter lasts the longest, so they need to harvest as much food as possible during spring, summer and fall. The characters are unaware to the fact that they are a part of a science experiment. The weather in this "snow globe" is controlled by Morozoko Industries in a desperate attempt to improve the way humans react, prepare and survive different weather scenarios.

Now, Genesis and Jack are in a relationship from the start - but the thing is, this doesn't feel like a relationship or a romance. There are no spark between the characters and if it wasn't for the one sentence kissing from time to time, I wouldn't even have thought that they were in a relationship. (Gensis constantly pointing out that Jack is her boyfriend might have helped as well) . Since the romance was already established, there was nothing to lead up to it and then it is important to create a good chemistry between the two characters instead, but they severely lacked any personality or interesting traits.

How does the authority and leadership in this book even work? From the beginning I thought Adam was the one in charge, but the people listen to Jack all the time? Why even have someone else in charge if everyone is going to listen to Jack anyway? There are so many characters from the start with little to no introductions that it is so hard to keep up with who is who - either try and shrink it down or make the characters more distinguishable.

One of my main complaints around this book revolved around the dialogue. The dialogue just seem so forced. There is no way that this is how normal people talk to each other. Our main girl, Genesis, and even most of the other characters, keep on saying the name of the person they are addressing and it is almost constant.

To conclude, this book does need some polishing. The characters, the story itself and how it is executed need work. For me, it is the dialogue that needs more developing - it felt unnatural and forced at times and the constant name-dropping eventually got on my nerves. This book just felt so juvenile in the way it was executed.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and the author for providing a copy in exchange for an honest review.

THE REVOLUTION OF JACK FROST is a creative retelling that’s fresh on ideas, but rather frosty on the delivery.

Enjoyed:
- The concept is amazing. I love the notion of a snow-globe world, and there are so many elements of it to explore.
- The opening of the novel hooked me right away. The prologue—and the epilogue, for that matter—were beautifully written, and those were my favorite parts.
- The banter between Gen and Jack was fun and cute. Possibly TOO cutesy, but I do know couples like that in real life, so it’s believable enough to me.
- I know some readers might want a more traditional romantic arc, where you see the build-up to the relationship. But I actually appreciated that the story started with these characters already in love. For me, traditional romantic arcs all seem the same after a while; they get boring and predictable. But when the characters start in a relationship, well, who knows where they might end up? (With that said, some things WERE predictable. The author made it incredibly obvious what Jack was up to, and I would’ve preferred for that to be more of a surprise twist. However, I imagine it will work for younger teen and tween readers.)
- I love genre-bending stories. This is primarily a dystopian/sci-fi novel, but it has fairy-tale elements that are skillfully woven throughout.
- That cover is gorgeous!

Didn’t enjoy:
- Nearly the entire book was dialogue. Thankfully, it wasn’t just talking heads; the characters did interact with the setting. Still, the excessive dialogue grew sooo tedious, and I found myself wondering what happened to the beautiful prose that the prologue had seemed to promise me. (I’m a survivalist, yet even I didn’t care about the characters talking and talking and talking about the minute details of their sheltering strategies.)
- Gen, the main character, is largely defined by being Jack’s girlfriend. I know virtually nothing about her as an individual, which is disappointing on many levels.
- There are a whole bunch of side characters, but we don’t get to know the majority of them. They’re all pretty flat.
- There were many technical errors such as typos, misspellings, action erroneously being used as dialogue tags, etc. I’m hoping these will be fixed before publication, but they were so numerous that I found it distracting. The writing definitely needs some polish.
- I would’ve liked to see more diversity (handled with nuance and respect, of course, not just thrown in). There weren’t any queer or trans/nonbinary characters, and I can only think of one POC in the whole book.

The bones of an amazing story are certainly here. This is one of the most fascinating concepts I’ve come across in a while. The execution needs a lot of work, though, and I hope it can get there.

Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of The Revolution of Jack Frost for me to review!

You know when you read a premise pre-release and your hopes build and you see the cover and it makes your heart soar? One should know better by now than to get their hopes up...

Starting this book felt like I had been living my life and all of a sudden was drugged and thrown into the Hunger Games with no explanation. Seeing all these people around me and trying to figure out, WHO ARE YOU AND WHY DO I CARE?!? Sans bow and arrow directed at me.

I dnf'ed this mostly due to the ultimate disappointment for me, a main female character who seems to only be depicted as so and so's girlfriend. Mind you, this certainly could have changed and progressed during the story. I dnf'ed around 25%. We are, thank the gods, in a place of strong female protagonists. As it should be. Women have an identity outside of a man, and I am not here for being set back. It's one thing for that to be a sub set of someone's character but if the only thing being reiterated time and time again is that Gen (the main character) is Jack's girlfriend...it's not going to fly with me. Even the interesting plot could not get me to continue with these characters. The lack of depth to our main character is something that can't be ignored.

This is one I REALLY wanted to like but it just did not hook me.

Thank you to Netgalley/Publisher for providing me with an ARC for this book.

I'm sad to say I dnf'ed this book at about 40%. It was boring and flat, I didn't connect with the writing style and characters at all.

I must say going in, I was pretty excited to start it. This is the first arc I've ever received and it's been a miss for me this time.
Jack Frost has been a favourite of mine for a few years now and I was curious to see how this was going to play out in this book also the cover is absolutely gorgeous.

Sadly, when I read it, I felt like the world building was done very poorly. No explanations about anything and the fact that the author just dumped all these characters on me with no background? Their names became a big blur to me the more I read of this book. Nes, Nathaniel, Eliza, not to even mention the smaller kids all with similar names as well?

Genesis, the main character, felt so one-dimensional to me and even Jack. For all the 40% I read absolutely nothing happened.

A book has to grab your attention and makes you want to continue and this did the complete opposite to me.

I pushed through because it wasn't that long. But the plot was too dull. I felt like I kept stopping. This Revolution of Jack Frost first enticed me because I love Jack Frost, I love Morozko and I thought this would be a cool retelling. it was none of that. This concept was too similar to The Maze Runner for me to even begin to enjoy it. Think of a weather controlled Maze Runner and that's the book.
I found the characters to be just random and really had no development whatsoever. Genesis is the main character even though she had no personality unless talking about Jack. I didn't believe in their friendship let alone any romantic feelings. I don't understand why Jack wasn't the MC, he was one mentioned the most. The Hierarchy of the group confused me. I thought Jack was in charge because everyone listened to him, but it was actually someone else.
I didn't read the synopsis before going into this, and maybe that's where I went wrong, but I just saw Jack Frost and thought I'd give it a shot.

Special thanks to Netgalley for the the eARC in exchange for an honest review

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

The Revolution of Jack Frost is a science fiction dystopian novel about a group of people living in an environment with really bizarre seasonal variations. The story centers around Jack and Genesis, a couple living in this world that uncovers secrets about this world. Survival is a common theme throughout this book. Jack and Genesis are supposed to be in love, but the relationship between the two of them was just odd. I didn't feel the connection between the two characters at all. It was like they were friends with benefits as opposed to boyfriend and girlfriend. I knew I was taking a risk picking this one up considering the short time for the warmer seasons that are intended to be used for gathering food and supplies. It was not explained very well how the plant life and wildlife were adapted to not only survive the seasonal variations, but also to grow at such a rate that they could be harvested for supplies to keep the humans living in the world alive. This really made this a difficult book for me to finish.

I knew what was coming at the ending but I was still broken.

The Revolution of Jack Frost is one of the best retelling I have read !! Although I was kinda lost in the beginning, I stuck through it and grew to love the adventure. Once I got to the fourth or fifth chapter, I got a grasp of what was going on and I could clearly imagine the story.

With Jack Frost being one of my favourite characters, I was excited about reading this book. Filled with love, suspicion, and survival, K.M.Robinson brings to life a journey that will question your convictions.

This is the first time reading K.M.Robinson's book and I am hooked !! Now I feel like I need to read all her books because she's like the queen of retelling.

I would recommend those who love retelling and adventure to read this book. It is absolutely stunning.

*SavvyLBC Reviews, I received an ARC from NetGalley/Publisher for an honest review*

This book made no sense at all.
I was ecstatic to receive an ARC because I love story retelling and Jack Frost is one of my favorite stories. It's like it's trying to hard to fit into the Hunger Games and Maze Runner world. I expected more Jack Frost more folklore and less Maze Runner. All that aside the relationships were lacking. I didn't feel the slightest thing for any character. I don't even remember their names it was that disconnected and the world was a bit all over the place. Where they really in a snow globe after all because it seems like it all shook up and rattled.

I wish I had have enjoyed this as the premise sounded amazing.

Alas the narrative was lacklustre and moved extremely slowly, at points I skipped whole chapters and still managed to be on top of the story.

I found myself failing to connect with any character involved. I also found that main love interest between Genesis and Jack felt very Stockholm Syndrome-esque for the majority of the novel.

While the novel had great potential, I felt it completely missed the mark

I received an advanced reading copy of this title from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to like this book so badly but the story felt really flat-what little action occurred was poorly described and there was zero growth in the characters. Genesis' character seems solely defined by her relationship to Jack and nothing else. There weren't enough details to provide for solid world building and the characters were uninteresting.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

I couldn't finish this book. The writting was terrible and the characters are not relatable. The relationship between Gen and Jack is almost disgustingly over the top that it was annoying. There were other things that were just more annoying than interesting. I really wanted to like this book but just couldn't.

I was hoping this book would be a retelling of Jack Frost and thus, would be amazing. Sadly, it wasn't. The writing was horrible, and I couldn't connect with the characters. This book had so much potential and it would have been so much better if there weren't too many random characters and poorly written romance.
