Spring 1915 is consumed with two traumatic events.

Canadian troops endures a trial by fire at the Second Battle of Ypres. While the Canadians are ultimately successful – to the pride of their countrymen – the battle marks the first widespread use of chlorine gas. The gas moves across the ground like a yellow-green fog, damaging the mucus membranes and causing asphyxiation.

Meanwhile, Americans are rocked by the torpedoing of the Lusitania, an ocean liner that, like the Titanic, was thought to be unsinkable. The sinking costs the lives of nearly 1,200 including women, children and babies, and splits the United States into two camps – those who want war and those who still believe in neutrality.

Part two in the A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WW1 series. The series explores journalism history by examining how newspapers reported on the war, painting a picture of the war as our ancestors knew it.

A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WW 1 is a five-part series that gathers facts about the entry of Canada and the United States into the first world war. While Canada joined the war early in order to back Britain’s involvement, the United States remained neutral for several years, and in fact, made money manufacturing munitions and shipping supplies for the war in Europe.

Written in a journalistic format, the author, Melina Druga, gives interesting titbits of information from newspaper reports and witness accounts of events at the time: the sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania with thousands of civilian passengers aboard, the chlorine gas attacks by the Germans, the excruciating deaths as soldiers were killed in battle by new forms of bullets that entered backwards, and the horrendous bloody battles as soldiers were mowed down by the Germans before America entered the war.

Druga artfully reveals President Roosevelt's resistance to war, his focus instead, on what was occurring on American soil, and the ways the war kept spilling over onto the world stage. This book reads like an ongoing newspaper, giving information from many angles: the American election year that swept in a change of attitude towards the war, the votes and passionate speeches in congress for and against the war, and what happened in America and Canada when American troops finally fought side-by-side. Facts are backed by statistics, and with a bird’s eye overview, the historical perspective and personal witness accounts make this book an outstanding read.

The story started in the book "1914" continues, from the perspective of two nations and their citizens. Although it is not pleasant to remember tragedies and the losses of the past, they always help to reflect and improve the present, if we are willing.

Short, But Insightful Look at WWI from Two Perspectives

I have read this author’s fictional series that takes place during WWI. I imagine this series of nonfiction books, each looking at a year during that war from both Canadian and American perspectives, stems from her research for that series. I'm glad she decided to share! I liked that this looks at that time from both those countries' perspectives as shown by newspaper coverage at the time. My own grandfather was American-born to Canadian parents... and he decided to join in the European war effort but chose to do so through his Canadian roots; the pro-war fervor made him not want to wait until (or if) America decided to enter. In fact, I believe he joined his Canadian unit in the year this book discusses, 1915. In reading this book, I came to better understand his decision, one that ultimately cast a long net, affecting his life forevermore after shrapnel injury during his time overseas. This book is very short, with less than 50 PDF pages in the ARC copy I downloaded from a book review site. After a brief introduction where she discusses the surprisingly fractious nature of US-Canada relations prior to WWI, the author narrowly focuses on two key events that year, one for Canada (the second battle of Ypres) and one for the US (the sinking of the Lusitania). As she states in the introduction, the author tries not to look at this through a contemporary 21st-century lens—although a little of that does creep in—but rather at what newspapers at the time had to say about them. At that time, newspapers were a powerful reflective and shaping force for society, yet they were often inaccurate or reflected the position of those in power at the newspaper. This quick read is a fascinating dip into the world that was in 1915 near the start of the first world war, or as they knew it at the time, the Great War.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Interesting Chronicle of the year, 1915!

What an interesting historical journey in 1915 by Melina Druga. Druga is a freelance journalist and from the details in this book, also a historian. Her research and knowledge tell the story of WWI, and how the intention was to be victorious, no matter the cost. As anyone who is familiar with WWI history and its start of the "war to end all wars" (which we know isn't true, but they thought it was.) It's 1915, and it's not just about the war at its fullest, but also the sinking of the Lusitania. The story is told through journalism, and how the media (mainly newspapers back then) told the story to the public. This is part one of the series. I am a definite fan of this author! Druga is a magnificent author and writer and tells the story so well. Even when you know how it's going to end, the use of the media format to tell the story, and her writing skills, makes you think, and get the perspective of what the world thought of the War back then, and how they lived. And there is the result of the sinking of the Titanic and other events that seem to rock the entire world to its core. I look forward to reading part 3, 1916. Brilliant writing! 1915 is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy's Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book, to also write a review.
