One nation shows valor on the battlefield. Another goes to battle at the ballot box.

The Battle of the Somme drags on in Europe and witnesses a new weapon of war – the tank. The battle receives sparse coverage back home, however, as Canadians are preoccupied with a variety of homefront problems.

Meanwhile, the United States goes to the polls in a close election that pits Democrats against Republicans and Republicans against Democrats and Progressives. Suffragists also seize the moment and hope to gain universal suffrage for women on all three parties’ planks.

Part three in the A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WW1 series. The series explores journalism history by examining how newspapers reported on the war, painting a picture of the war as our ancestors knew it.

Stories from behind the spotlight — rock star romances that are honest, passionate, and deeply human.

Melina Druga writes heartfelt stories about love, resilience, and the ties that connect us all. Best known for her contemporary rock star romances, she brings authenticity and emotional depth to a world often clouded by stereotypes — crafting stories that reflect the realities of being rock stars and the women who love them.

Her novels blend passion and vulnerability, exploring the complexities of love, identity, and second chances. Each book invites readers into the lives of characters who are flawed, hopeful, and achingly human, reminding us that even in the spotlight, the heart tells the truest story.

Earlier in her career, Melina explored historical fiction and nonfiction, and her love of the past continues to shape the emotional depth and texture of her writing.

When she’s not writing, Melina can often be found listening to music, exercising or watching musicians’ interviews. She believes stories, like songs, have the power to heal, inspire and remind us that love, in all forms, is worth the journey.

A US Election & Bloody Battle

This author, who has written a fascinating fictional series about WWI, has an interesting approach to writing historical nonfiction. She has written brief fact-based books for each of the years of WWI. She looks at each year from what the newspapers said in both the US and Canada. As she explains in the introduction, Canada and the US were quite different back then, and a low-level animosity existed between them. Rather than discuss several incidents for each country, she focuses on just one for each. In this book, she focuses on the 1916 election in the US and the battle of the Somme for Canada. I found both sections interesting. I didn’t know that Newfoundland was a separate entity back then but still attached to the British Empire. Newfies fought on the first, bloodiest day of the battle. The Canadian Corps didn’t enter the fray for several months. If you enjoy reading about history as I do, you will probably enjoy this bite-sized, focused book.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Interesting Chronicle of the year, 1916!

What an interesting historical journey in 1916 by Melina Druga. Druga is a freelance journalist and from the details in this book, also a historian. Her research and knowledge tell the story of WWI, and how the war affected politics, that pits Democrats against Republicans and Republicans against Democrats and Progressives. It's 1916, and a very important US Presidential election, especially in the middle of a war, where Democratic President Woodrow Wilson narrowly defeats former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Republican candidate, Charles Evans Hughes. The story is told through journalism, and how the media (mainly newspapers back then) told the story to the public. This is part one of the series. I am a definite fan of this author! Druga is a magnificent author and writer, and tells the story so well. Even when you know how it's going to end, the use of the media format to tell the story, and her writing skills, makes you think, and get the perspective of what the world thought of the War back then, and how they lived. I look forward to reading part 4, 1917. Brilliant writing! 1916 is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review.
