Like two years earlier, 1917 is a chaotic spring.

Canadian troops easily take their objective at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The battle would later be called Canada’s coming-of-age. While newspapers at the time do not use this term, there is a definite sense that something important has occurred.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson ran for re-election on the pledge that he kept the U.S. out the war. However, as submarine warfare increases, Wilson decides now is the time to enter the conflict.

Part four in the A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WW1 series. The series explores journalism history by examining how newspapers reported on the war, painting a picture of the war as our ancestors knew it.

Melina Druga writes heartfelt stories about love, resilience, and the ties that connect us all. Best known for her contemporary rock star romances, she brings authenticity and emotional depth to a world often clouded by stereotypes — crafting stories that reflect the realities of being rock stars and the women who live them.

Her novels blend passion and vulnerability, exploring the complexities of love, identity, and second chances. Each book invites readers into the lives of characters who are flawed, hopeful, and achingly human, reminding us that even in the spotlight, the heart tells the truest story.

Earlier in her career, Melina explored historical fiction and nonfiction, and her love of the past continues to shape the emotional depth and texture of her writing.

When she’s not writing, Melina can often be found listening to music, exercising or watching musicians’ interviews. She believes stories, like songs, have the power to heal, inspire and remind us that love, in all forms, is worth the journey.

US Enters WWI and Decisive Victory for Canadians

I absolutely adore this short-read series by an author who usually writes novels. She wrote a fictional series about World War I, and I imagine that her research for those books sparked an interest to write nonfiction books about it. She divides the war by year, and in the books, she focuses on one key event each for Canada and the United States. The introduction is nearly the same for each book, with just the final paragraph being different, introducing the two key events she will talk about. In this brief introduction, she shows us Canada and the United States back then, their relationship and how they differed. The author chooses to focus on just one event for each country through the lens of that time. What did American and Canadian newspapers say about these pivotal events? Reading these snippets of old newspaper accounts is fascinating, with their formal language and strident moments that I could imagine being said over a radio. The events the author looks at in this book are the US actually entering WWI and the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The US section certainly had some facts I never learned back in school, like that Germany sent Mexico a coded message saying that it would give that nation Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas if it supported Germany if the US entered the war! The paragraphs about possible ways of funding the war, including a progressive and aggressive income tax, were fascinating as well. The Canadian section looks at a key battle that happened, the first at which all four Canadian divisions fought. This group was able to win a tough but strategically crucial battle with a relatively small loss of life. A fascinating read if you have any interest in WWI.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Interesting Chronicle of the year, 1917!

What an interesting historical journey in 1917 by Melina Druga. Druga is a freelance journalist and from the details in this book, also a historian. Her research and knowledge tell the story of WWI, and how Canada, made its mark by taking over and declaring victory at The Battle of Vimy Ridge. It's the battle where they say that Canada finally hit its mark of coming of age. Also, in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to request a declaration of war against Germany. The story is told through journalism, and how the media (mainly newspapers back then) told the story to the public. This is part one of the series. I am a definite fan of this author! Druga is a magnificent author and writer, and tells the story so well. Even when you know how it's going to end, the use of the media format to tell the story, and her writing skills, makes you think, and get the perspective of what the world thought of the War back then, and how they lived. I look forward to reading part 5, 1918. Brilliant writing! 1917 is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review.
