Delight tempered by disease.

On Nov. 11, 1918, the war ends, prompting spontaneous and boisterous parties to erupt in cities throughout the United States and Canada.

Joy follows the deadliest month of the Spanish Flu Pandemic, a pandemic that would kill more Americans and Canadians than the war.

Part five in the A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WW1 series. The series explores journalism history by examining how newspapers reported on the war, painting a picture of the war as our ancestors knew it.

Stories from behind the spotlight — rock star romances that are honest, passionate, and deeply human.

Melina Druga writes heartfelt stories about love, resilience, and the ties that connect us all. Best known for her contemporary rock star romances, she brings authenticity and emotional depth to a world often clouded by stereotypes — crafting stories that reflect the realities of being rock stars and the women who live them.

Her novels blend passion and vulnerability, exploring the complexities of love, identity, and second chances. Each book invites readers into the lives of characters who are flawed, hopeful, and achingly human, reminding us that even in the spotlight, the heart tells the truest story.

Earlier in her career, Melina explored historical fiction and nonfiction, and her love of the past continues to shape the emotional depth and texture of her writing.

When she’s not writing, Melina can often be found listening to music, exercising or watching musicians’ interviews. She believes stories, like songs, have the power to heal, inspire and remind us that love, in all forms, is worth the journey.

Great conclusion to the series of books that talk about the First World War. From a journalistic perspective, it is possible to glimpse the perspective of the United States and Canada, and the historical cost of their involvement in the events.

The End of the Great War… and Global Pandemic

I have enjoyed this author's nonfiction series that looks at World War I, each book spanning just a year of that war, from the perspectives of what was written in contemporary newspapers in Canada and America. In previous books, the author focused on one large event or battle for each nation. As 1918 marks the end of World War I, the author has chosen to look at the two big world events of that year as recounted by Canadian and American newspapers. This book is far shorter than the other two and can be read in 15 minutes or so. The first section focuses on the Armistice that ended World War I and the Spanish Flu pandemic that killed more people in the US than the Great War. As a nurse, I particularly found the section on the Spanish Flu pandemic fascinating. It's hard to imagine that just 100 years ago our concepts of infectious diseases and what to do about them were so very different. I particularly found Crusan’s “advice” to be particularly unsettling. I think, too, as someone who is alive during our own current pandemic, reading a little about the one that happened 100 years ago gives a certain perspective on it and what we are going through. I wonder how someone 100 years from now will write about our pandemic. I've enjoyed this series focusing on very specific events during World War I, and if you are a history buff like me, you might like this laser focus on perceptions of two different nations involved in the conflict.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Interesting Chronicle of the year, 1918!

What an interesting historical journey in 1918 by Melina Druga. Druga is a freelance journalist and from the details in this book, also a historian. Her research and knowledge tell the story of WWI, and its ending. It ended in November 11 of 1918, which also ends up being a celebration of Armistice Day or Veteran's day. However, it is also the year that the Spanish flu infiltrated the world, creating a pandemic. The story is told through journalism, and how the media (mainly newspapers back then) told the story to the public. This is part one of the series. I am a definite fan of this author! Druga is a magnificent author and writer, and tells the story so well. Even when you know how it's going to end, the use of the media format to tell the story, and her writing skills, makes you think, and get the perspective of what the world thought of the War back then, and how they lived. Brilliant writing! 1918 is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review.
