The next charming mystery from Carolyn Haines featuring spunky southern private investigator Sarah Booth Delaney.
Dr. Frank Hafner is an archeologist working on excavating a new-found Native American temple site in the Mississippi Delta. He's also too handsome for his own good, and a bit of a flirt. Oddly enough, it's the first quality that gets him in trouble when he discovers the ritualistic murder of one of his archeological crew. When Coleman Peters, Sheriff and Sarah Booth's boyfriend, takes Dr. Hafner in for questioning in the murder, the accused doctor hires Sarah Booth to clear his name.
Soon, Sarah Booth has uncovered a number of possible suspects, but she can't narrow them down fast enough to stem the continuing violence that seems to trace back to Dr. Hafner's dig. When Peter Deerstalker, a member of the Tunica tribe, mentions a curse, it doesn't seem so far-fetched--especially when a young graduate student on the site claims someone on the site is searching for something much more precious than ancient pottery...
Something spooky is going on in the Mississippi Delta, and though Sarah Booth isn't sure who to trust, or what to believe, she knows she won't rest until she's dug up the truth.

In Game of Bones, an archaeological dig at a Native American site is also the site of a ritualistic style murder! Is one of the professors guilty or is something more sinister afoot? No worries, because Sarah Booth and Tinkie are on the case although this time it's almost hard to tell what is going on with suspects appearing at almost every turn and creepy sightings at the burial site that makes even the most down to earth person wonder about curses, ghosts, and things that go bump in the night.
As always, I loved my time spent with Sarah Booth, Tinkie, Ceecee, Coleman, Jitty, and Sarah Booth and Tinkie's assorted animal cohorts as they solve yet another mystery in Zinnia, MS! While Game of Bones might be Haines 20th book in the series, the story still feels fresh, creative, and intriguing, which isn't something that I encounter with every series that I read. The characters are strong and vibrant and Haine's plot is expertly executed. If you haven't read any books in this series before, then there would be no problem reading this book as a standalone as Haines masterfully weaves the story in such a way that you're not left feeling lost in the dark.
Whenever I pick up one of these books, I know that I'm not going to be able to put them down, and that was exactly the case with Game of Bones! It was a page-turning, intriguing, suspenseful, cozy mystery that had me guessing up till the end. It also pulled at my heartstrings and left me so happy that Haines left the door wide open for book 21-this is one series I hope never ends! Of course, I recommend this one!

Game of Bones is Book 20, yes Book 20 in the Sarah Booth Delaney Series.
This long running series has remained relateable and an enjoyable read and this latest installment is no different.
Sarah and her friend Tinkie are back and Tinkie is as spicy as ever! I love the complex characters that the author has developed.
I really enjoy how the author ties up the case but also leaves an opening for more fantastic adventures to come in the future. That is a testament to the authors fantastic story telling ability; this book is part of a series but can also be read as a stand alone story.

Sarah Booth is a detective. When a murder is found on an archeological site, Sarah is hired by Dr. Hafner to find the murdered and clear his name. It seems the deeper Sarah digs into her investigation the more the violence escalates on the sight.
Is the sight cursed? With the suspects count escalating and zombie like figures stalking, Sarah is hard pressed to find the killer before its too late.
This was my first read in the Sarah Booth Delaney series, I know I was pretty ambitious jumping in at book 20, and here comes the but… But Haines writes strong characters, and a plot that stood on its own. At no time did I feel lost or had that playing catch up feeling.
Game of Bones was a highly enjoyable book-cation. Haines delightfully pulled me into the Sarah and Tinkie’s world with a masterfully executed mystery that had me guessing till the end.

I have shared many book adventures with Sarah Booth and Tinkie, however the Game of Bones may just be the best one yet! The book is filled with mystery, friendship, betrayal, history and the best of all - hope & miracles.
Sarah Booth and Tinkie are hired to prove a professor at a Native American burial site, located outside of Zinnia, did not murder a competing professor in order to take credit for a historically & academically relevant discovery. While their client is not the most charming person, Sarah Booth and Tinkie believe him to be innocent. This puts Sarah Booth at odds with Coleman, her long-time love and county sheriff. Strange happenings begin to occur at the burial site and after a dire warning about the coming "Crow Moon" and the tragedy it may bring, Sarah Booth and Tinkie are determined not to lose those who are dear to them.
No Sarah Booth book would be complete without the smart, brave and annoying at times, Jitty. To make her points, Jitty transforms into some of the most famous and strong female Native Americans. The characters enhance the story and I loved having these women included in the book.
Sarah Booth was brave, smart, kind, smart-alecky, determined and stubborn in Games of Bones. All of the qualities readers love in her! She was a force to be reckoned with and her inner strength shined through in several dangerous and emotional scenes in the book. Her love of Coleman, Tinkie , Cece & all her friends and of course the marvelous trio of animals - Sweetie Pie, Pluto, & Chablis- made for a loving and humorous read. The characters of Tinkie (who has her own secrets), Millie, Harold, Oscar, Dewayne & Budgie and the lovable Doc add a sense of family and continuity to the books.
It's always a great to come home to Zinnia and visit and I can't wait for the next case!

A university archaeological team is setting up a dig in Sunflower County, and when someone is murdered, the Delaney Detective agency is hired to help clear a professor of murder charges. Something creepy is going on, including sightings of ethereal creatures in the night. Could the site be cursed, as some say? Is there treasure worth killing for hidden there? I have been reading about Sarah Booth Delaney over the years. At the early years, I often didn't find the books in the stores, shop. I hope to remedy that in the near future. The 20th book in the series did not disappoint.
Along the Mississippi death are mounds believe to have been built the Tunics Indian of the region. Dr. Frank Hafner is an archeologist is excavating one and there are those who are against the evacuation and others who are curious about the mounds. A member of the crew is found in a viciously MURDER on the site. Dr. Hafner, her partner is the main suspect and he hires the Detective Agency to clear him of the charge. When a second victim is found on the site. Sarah becomes determined to find the person responsible for the death of the women. Will she succeed or become a victim? I highly recommend this book and series.

As soon as I read the first few words I knew I was back in Zinnia just by the descriptive words used to give me a picture. I could feel myself riding on Miss Scrapiron with Sarah Booth smelling that soil. I was back with friends and on another adventure with Sarah Booth, Tinkie and Coleman. What an adventure this was! Ghosts, murder, an archaeology dig, suspense that kept me turning pages to the very end.

Sarah Booth and Tinkie have been hired to free Dr. Frank Hafner of any wrongdoing in a murder that has taken place at his archeological dig in Sun Flower County, Mississippi. That job may find Sarah booth and Sheriff Coleman at odds since the sheriff is on the heels of Hafner.
The nature of this murder had more than just similarity to an Indian ritual. The fact that it was Dr. Hafner's competition, Dr. Sandra Wells, that was murdered doesn't help their case in proving his innocence.

I was about five pages into Game of Bones when I started doing the slow-blink “what the heck am I reading”.
We meet the heroine, Sarah Booth Delaney, when she’s riding her horse around her family’s ancestral Southern plantation estate and mourning the fact that she’s had to lease most of its ‘vast acres’ to a local farmer. So when she’s having vague money worries later on in the book, it really doesn’t ring true; what about the lease income from those ‘vast acres’?. And yes, if I was descended from slave-owners, I might wish I wasn’t too - but I wouldn’t be hoping to find ‘exotic g’psy’ in my DNA test.
Honestly, that’s two racial slurs slapped together in the same thought, but what else can you expect from an author who has a former slave haunting and helping the descendant of her owners? Not only that, but pressing her to have children so the line can continue, and manifesting as a series of prominent First Nation women from history who all, inexplicably, want to help and protect Sarah Booth.
There’s so much hot racist mess in this book I can’t begin to express my disgust with it, but my greatest rage is reserved for the Nice White Ladies who have made this series so popular the author has written 20 of them, and are all over the reviews praising the author for teaching them about Native American culture. I mean, personally I’d go and read something by an actual Native author, but maybe that’s a bit too far out of their comfort zone.
One star for a privileged, racist mess which can’t even keep its own story continuity straight.

Game of Bones by Carolyn Haines was one of those books that grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go until I reached the end.
Sarah Booth and Tinkie are working for a university archeologist who is under suspicion of a ritualistic murder at his current dig site. Ms. Haines' characters are all fully developed now and they are still colorful, quirky and often snarky as these two formidable women work to find a murderer. The plot is tightly woven and there were twists, turns and enough suspects to keep me guessing. This one also showed Sarah Booth coming to some realizations about herself and Coleman. There's a touch of paranormal in this one as well as spooky sightings of a zombie - or was it? I never did suspect who the murderer was until the reveal which is something I appreciate in a well told mystery.

This was another book with such a good ending that I hated to see it end. After only reading the previous book and the first book, I feel like these characters are old friends. Sarah Booth and Tinkie were working for a professor who was part of an archaeological dig, but who also ended up being suspected of the murder of one of his colleagues. When another person ended up killed the same way as the first one, people were getting spooked by the press into thinking there was a serial killer out there. It didn't help matters that Sarah and Tinkie's journalist friend Cece went missing. There were a lot of secrets, but I had an idea early about who was behind it all, and for once, I was right. I enjoyed seeing how it all played out. I really need to hurry up and get caught up in this series before another new one comes out!

Two competing archaeology professors set up an excavation on a Native American burial mound. To stop the work, a local Native American attorney files an injunction. When one professor is killed ritualistically, the other becomes the number one suspect though the attorney is also under suspicion. Professor Haynes hires Sarah Booth and Tinkie to clear his name. Despite warnings from a ghost and a psychic, Sarah Booth is determined to solve the case.
Game of Bones is one of the best books in this excellent cozy mystery series. There is just enough paranormal activity to keep it interesting without overwhelming the dynamics between the living characters. The mystery was full of convincing red herrings making this tale a good choice for armchair detectives. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars!

In this novel, local toy developing millionaire Elton Cade has funded the archeological dig of Mound Salla, an ancient Tunica burial mound. Dr. Frank Hafner is in charge of the dig but Dr. Sandra Wells has received separate funding that has brought in the latest in excavating equipment. With rumors of ghostly activity at the dig, the student workforce becomes less enthused about their opportunity to improve their grades and more interested in preserving themselves.
When Dr. Wells is found ritualistically murdered at the dig site the mystery begins. Private detectives Sarah Booth Delaney and her partner Tinkie Bellcase Richmond are called in to work on behalf of Dr. Hafner, as he is the prime suspect in the death. Will Sarah Booth be working with or against her boyfriend Sheriff Coleman Peters?
In a well spun mystery, Ms. Haines has woven in community and family drama in most unexpected ways. She has also highlighted Native American women’s historical accomplishments while also giving a fresh perspective on the historical digs such as those depicted in this book. Although this was the first I have read of this series, I found this book to stand on its own with enough ties to the evolution of the characters to stay in the loop for those new to the series but not so much that it would be boring to the longtime reader.

Near Sarah Booth's home, they've started an archaeological dig on a burial mound but something has gone wrong. One of the main archaeologists has been murdered in a very brutal fashion. The other archaeologist, Frank Hafner, hires Sarah Booth and Tinkie to clear his name. There are a lot of suspects since the murdered woman was a maneater and endeared herself to no one. Peter Deerstalker, the member of a local tribe is also hellbent on making sure that the dig stops so that his ancestors can rest in peace. And there was something odd about the family who most recently owned the property. Could they be coming back to cause trouble?
There was so much crammed into this book that it was hard to follow who was doing what and why we needed to care about anyone other than our main character. The first historical elements introduced (at least in the ARC) seemed a little off but then we got to the bit about Custer and that was SO wrong that it took me out of the story. I get that this is a fiction book and should get some leeway but whoo-ee, this was bad in that it pulled me out of the story every time after that Haines introduced some "history" of the area. I was already wavering in between two and three stars and the ending took it down for me. There have always been supernatural elements in this series but to add in magic was just too far for me. It made sense in order to tie up the story but the ending came out of left field.
There was so much crammed into this book that it was hard to follow who was doing what and why we needed to care about anyone other than our main character. The first historical elements introduced (at least in the ARC) seemed a little off but then we got to the bit about Custer and that was SO wrong that it took me out of the story. The characters in this book are a little hard to keep track of, and if the reader has not read the series, or at least a few of the books in the series they will have no clue who the characters are. Unfortunately, I was one of those people who hadn’t read any of the other books, so it took me a while to figure out who was a reoccurring character and what their personality is like.
Sarah Booth is a warm friendly person with a curiosity that seems never-ending. She gets into all sort of trouble with everyone, except her best friend Tinkie, who on her own is a fun and interesting character. Sarah’s love interest, Coleman is a wonderful character who has the patience of a saint.
The location of an architectural dig reminds readers of a long-ago book by Agatha Christie. It is rarely used in cozies and a welcome change. I felt that the “Mounds” could have been described better as it was difficult to envision them but overall the reader should get a general idea of what they are and what they were used for in understanding the plot better.
The writing is very good, and the author knows her characters. The murderer did not come as a surprise to me but might present a challenge to others. I would like to have seen the motive for the killing made clearer a bit sooner as it comes out of the blue. The way in which the victim(s) is killed is a bit more violent than most cozies and slightly odd as well.
In general, Game of Bones is a good story that most readers will enjoy. It is typical of many cozy mystery books in that it can be read quickly, has memorable characters and enough twists and turns to keep readers happy. In my copy, there were some continuity issues which hopefully have since been fixed in the final edit.

There are elements in this which you have to decide for yourself what you credit. I would have liked it much better if Coleman Peters did not give his girlfriend and her partner free reign in his sheriff's office. No real law person would allow a civilian to take part in the investigation of a crime the way he does, no matter how small the town.
There are a couple of different philosophies as to how domestic pets should be fed but takeout from the local restaurant is not one of them and Sarah Booth ought to be ashamed of herself.
I loved the descriptions of the Delta area in early spring, very good, and the evocation of night under one of those giant moons is very fine. (The cover actually refers to elements in the story, too.)
The First Nations elements were well done, too, with both views about archaeological excavations well and fairly presented. I liked the personas Jitty took on, the firsts that First Nations women achieved. I even recognized Pocahontas from a portrait I've seen of her. She died at Gravesend, Eng. It was a bit confusing in the book. These first should be marked.
One thing the story did not explain was why there was apparently no objection by the ancestors to the Bailey family's basement. I have yet to meet the basement with a ground level trap door that doesn't go down into the ground and would have to have been dug out. It was a considerable basement, too, not just a storage hole.
It got a three because it was a fun read and I actually laughed out loud at least twice.

I enjoy these books because there is always a slightly different story line. In Game of Bones, the action centers around an old Indian mound which is being excavated by archaeologists.
A ritually murdered corpse is discovered, and it turns out to be one of the two lead archaeologists, the beautiful but self centered and ambitious Sandra Wells. Suspects are plentiful. We have a handsome archaeologist, a toy maker, several students who are only there to get a good grade, a Native American activist lawyer, who does not seem to have the backing of his tribe, and the mysterious Bailey family, who used to have a house on the site.
There is a supernatural presence in the book as well. As per usual, Jitty, Sarah Boone's resident haint, appears in various Native American woman disguises and warns her of danger on the night of the Crow's Moon. One of the students is a descendant of Marie Laveau, and she warns the others of something mysterious wandering the woods at night. A "zombie" is sighted staggering around the mound, and it looks like the deceased Dr Wells, even wearing the bloody clothes she died in.
At the end of the book Tinkie tells Sarah Booth that she thinks she is pregnant. Could it be for real this time?

Each new book in this series of 20 is fresh and new. Sarah Booth evolves and changes but always stays true to herself. When a ritualistic murder takes place at a Native American archeology site, Sarah Booth Delaney's detective agency must solve a mystery with her partner and a clever cast of characters.
I had never read any of the books in this series but I am now a fan. The characters are colourful and well developed. I found it funny, charming and any story that has pets that help solve crime as well as a family ghost gets my vote. So looking forward to starting this series from book 1.

I really like these characters. This is the first book by this author that I have read and I intend to read others in this series. Sarah Booth and her crew are trying to figure out who murdered an archeologist. As they get into the murder, things get more complicated and another body shows up. When Coleman is shot, Sarah Booth knows she has to stop this person immediately, but it also puts her and her partner in danger. It was a good mystery and I didn't guess it until the end.

A mystery set at an archaeology dig in Mississippi where a murder happens. Sarah Booth and her partner, Tinkie, are hired by the main suspect to prove him not guilty. Lots of outside people involved so the clues seem to circle. The book was a quick easy read.

Sometimes it takes a reliable series to get out of a book reader slump, and the Sarah Booth Delaney series can do that for me. Ghosts, zombies, a mystery and with the whole cast of Zinnia characters feel like family and home. This book reads a lot like a Scooby-Doo episode.

These are just a fun, comfort read for me. Sarah Booth and Tinkie are a great combination and the rest of the human and pets just make it better.

This was intense, but ended with enough "feel-goods" to relax the reader. Scary moments, especially if you've gotten to know the characters in this series. The author added some good hooks at the end. In fact, she threw in a huge adjustment to what I thought was really happening. After the climax, she also added a secret of a fairly main character that may come to fruition (or not) but the information, in itself, is motivation for me to buy the next book in this series.

First, I can't believe I've never heard of this series. I tend to read more psych and thrillers and keep to my cozies as in between fillers. This is book 20 in the series and I very much enjoyed it. I will def be adding Ms. Haines to my list of authors.
The story revolves around Sarah Booth and her friend Tinkie, who are private investigators in Mississippi. They solve crimes with the help of their pets, Sweetie Pie, Pluto and Chablis (I love that their pets help solve mysteries). Sarah Booth and Tinkie must solve the crime of two women killed on an archeological dig, an old indian mound, in what appears to be a ritualistic murder. Main suspect is Dr. Frank Hafner (their client), who they must prove innocent. Not an easy task, when he seems like a perfect suspect. There are other characters who have a vested interest in the dig in either stopping the dig all together or funding the dig to discover what secrets and treasures it yields. Add to the story a family ghost and a romantic relationship between Sarah and Sheriff Coleman and you have a good fun read.
I recommend the book as I enjoyed it very much. I would have given it 5 stars, except for the fact that it had one too many detours before finally solving the crime - (Cece and Cissy). The fun parts, def the ghostly apparitions with warnings.

Game of Bones by Carolyn Haines is impressive. Ms. Haines never seizes to surprise me, and she always has my full attention.
Will Sarah Booth and Tinkie figure out who killed the two women before their loved ones are hurt?
Three individuals have warned Sarah Booth that on the night of the Crow Moon, she and her loved ones will be in danger. She tries to keep everyone safe, but her friends just aren't cooperating with the objective. Coleman is the worst. He and Sarah Booth are so much alike.
The Mystery
We have the murders of a college professor and a private investigator as a local archeology dig in an untouched Native American Mound Burial ground. The excavation is funded by multiple investors, with a professor, Dr. Frank Hafner, and his student from Michigan. They are going about their business when a second professor, Dr. Sandra Wells, and students from the same Michigan college show up. I found this similar to the old claim jumpers back in the day. Dr. Wells isn't very professional, and everyone knows that she wants to get a television show from this dig.
Since no one like Dr. Wells, you could see why someone would want her dead. There are quite a few people on the list. The problem is what happened to the private investigator, and how are the women connected? This question is where Tinkie and Sarah Booth come in as Dr. Hafner hired them to clear his name. Our sleuths start work right away, but nothing seems right.
So, this one caught me off guard. I fell for all of the same lines that Sarah Booth and Tinkie did. This mystery is perfect; there are so many things moving around. My favorite part is, of course, Jitty and the personas of outstanding Native American women that she brings to help Sarah Booth solve the problems plaguing the dig. There is also the one spirit that finds Sarah Booth on her own to share another valuable message about the troubles that Sarah Booth is trying to figure out.
Coleman gets shot, and Sarah Booth is supposed to be keeping an eye on him. However, Coleman is just like Sarah Booth and won't let his deputies down. So, he keeps showing up when Sarah Booth wants him to stay away. Sound familiar? It is nice to see them happy together. Now if they could just quit ending up in the hospital. They need to make that heir for Jitty.

I love this series, and I found this twentieth installment as meaningful and entertaining as the others. Spending time in Zinnia, Mississippi, is always fantastic. It's like going home to see family and friends. Therefore, my rating for Game of Bones by Carolyn Haines is five stars.
I highly recommend this book and the rest of the Sarah Booth Delaney series. It has everything, mystery, romance, a touch of paranormal, horses, dogs, a cat, friendship, with a few current events, historical images, and that southern Carolyn Haines flare that you can only get from her books.

This is the twentieth book in the Sarah Booth Delaney series. An archeological dig is going on at a Native American temple site. One of the workers is murdered in a ritualistic way. The head of the dig hires Sarah Booth and Tinkie to find out what happened. In between solving what happened to the archeologist, Sarah Booth also has to locate her friend, CeCe who has disappeared after meeting one of the suspects.
I thought this was a good book. I liked the archeological dig mystery and of course Sarah Booth and Colomon. The only thing that kept me from giving this five stars was that it felt very slow paced and took me a while to get into it and to get through it. But I love the characters.

I like these books but they are starting to become a bit too much to believe. I get that Sarah Booth and Tinkie are detectives, it seems like more and more Coleman, who is the sheriff, is depending on them to help him solve crimes. In this one he even assigned them to do different things.
The mystery surrounding the mound was slightly interesting. It seemed like everyone was suspect and there were a lot of people with different agendas. By the time we got to the end I was shaking my head, it was a bit to fantastical as were Sarah Booth's actions. I get it was a last ditch effort, but come on.
