Evil has awoken in Asheville, North Carolina, and Terra Rowan must prepare the Ladies of the Biltmore Society for battle. With her familiar, Pixel, a crooked leg fluffy orange cat, and her apprentice Abigail Oakhaven, a stubborn teenage girl with a bloodline dating back to the beginning of time, she begins their journey. The witch hunters have come to the Appalachian Mountains in search of the last witch of Salem. The magic of the mountains can no longer protect her and her coven. She must travel to the one place on earth that holds the secret to save mankind – Dark Corner. Combining elements from different cultures, Appalachian folklore, Celtic legends, Native American mysticism, Dark Corner continues its new witch mythology while staying true to the realm of cozy mystery. Terra Rowan is a witch trapped between worlds and lost in time.

One of the most extraordinary things about life is how chance encounters lead to unimaginable adventures. Not so many years back I was introduced to the most amazing of authors, Vicki Vass, through my friend Lisa Kelley. I devoured books that Vicki wrote like potato chips and came to have admire and be inspired by her writing. I reached out to her through social media and an amazing thing happened. Somehow, the books I had come to love, I ended up a character in. This is one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me. Book two in the Witch Cat Mystery Series arrived early in December and was the most exciting paranormal reads of 2018. I love the premise of this series, the story line, the setting and of course the characters! Lending my name and my familiar to the story, gave me an unbelievable sense of excitement in a book that gave me hours of joy and mystery. We lose ourselves in books but we find ourselves there also...
Wow! I could not put this book down. I was captivated from the get go. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and this was even better. The characters and continuing adventure were well written and took me on a journey and adventure that I was thrilled to indulge in. I look forward to reading the next in the series.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Just as adorable and captivating as book one! I am enjoying reading from the viewpoint of a cat even if she is supposed to be human. It makes for a unique perspective. Add in New witches of all ages and skills plus the dark magic haunting them causing murders to get a wonderful cozy. The mix of all the cultures is another bonus that makes this great for all sorts of fans. I totally loved it I give it 5/5 stars.
A magical tale from beginning to end, author Vicki Vass has once again enchanted me with her masterful storytelling.
DARK CORNER is the second installment in the unique, Witch Cat Mysteries. Told from the perspective of the protagonist, a witch turned cat who escaped the Salem witch trials, each page of this book will draw you in with clever writing, eclectic characters, and a story that will awaken your imagination.
Author Vass made it impossible for me to put this book down until I had read the last word. Even better than the first book, BLOODLINE, DARK CORNER with leave you anxiously awaiting the next brilliant story in this series.
Jumping genre barriers, the Witch Cat Mystery series is the perfect read for lovers of fantasy, mystery, cozy, and YA.
Terra Rowan is the last witch of Salem. When the infamous witch trials began, Terra's mentor, Elizabeth gave her a potion that transformed her from her human form to the form of a cat. Terra has spent the years roaming the country until she settled in Asheville, North Carolina. In the present day she has established a Wiccan coven and befriended the descendant of Elizabeth, in hopes that the spell can be found that will return her to her human form. When she formed the coven, Terra also opened the portal to an old enemy from the time of the Civil War. As she prepares to battle the last witch hunters with the help of her coven of friends, the Ladies of the Biltmore Society, Terra is determined to best the evil.
This is the second book in the series and it continues right where the first one, "Bloodline", left off. The storyline and characters are fully developed and will pull you right into the battle of good and evil. I am eagerly awaiting the third book, "The Witches' Apprentice." Any cozy or paranormal fan will be enthralled with this new series. Check it out!
This series is a fantastic combination of historical facts, fantasy and paranormal. I love the characters. Starting with the Salem witch trials to give a back story to Terra Rowan, a former witch turned into a cat by her witch sister to save her from being hanged was taken in by Agatha Hollows in the mountains of North Carolina, who was eventually chased out and killed by the Witch Hunters. Terra can communicate with other witches and Wiccans and she now resides with Mrs. Twigg and young Abigail the descendent of Elizabeth who didn't think she had powers but was being taught by Terra as an apprentice to harness the powers she eventually showed. We get to see the Biltmore Estate and meet the coven of Wiccans. There are murders and strange occurances and forboding of the witch hunters of old returning to get the secret. Besides Terra, the characters in this series and in this book are fun like Mrs. Twigg who is the leader of the coven, and her deceased husband, Albert who she can talk to but can't touch since he is a ghost. Then there is Pixel which is actually Terra's familiar. Pixel cracks me up! There are battles with the Witch Hunters, a couple of murders, and some strange twists and turns that keep you reading. I Love this series.
This is Dark Corner, book 2 of A Witch Cat Mystery series, written by Vicki Vass. It’s a fun little book steeped in paranormal with witches and fairies and more. It’s a great book and you will absolutely love Pixel, the sweet cat always with something to say.
You will see a lot of reviews for this book beginning with WOW. That is how you feel when you have turned the last page. This is one of those rare books that has the ability to interweave fiction, fantasy and fact, both historical and present day. Terra is a witch, turned into a cat to save her from the Salem Witch Trials hundreds of years ago. She is now charged with mentoring a group of elderly Wiccan women as well as training the great granddaughter of her own mentor, a young witch who will grow up to be more powerful than anyone can imagine. That is if Abigail survives to become a mature witch. At just eighteen, she is impulsive and feels much more capable of dealing with magic than she really is. She is impatient to play with her magic and tired of studying. Abigail spends much of her time around the elderly ladies, so when another girl her age shows up, she decides it is OK to bust loose for a bit. Naturally she can not keep her magic a secret for long. And complications are the only possible result. Add in story elements worthy of a cozy mystery, with magical elements, and an open minded, though skeptical cop, plus, my favorite character of all, a fluffy orange cat who befriends a butterfly. There is so much going on and so much to think about, that you will be glued to the page! I can not wait to see what happens in the next book.
kindle unlimited, like the other tho was bit confusing with back and forth timeline, etcera, this one after such a long period of time and refusing to reread the previous one but remember 'enough' about it, only made me wish had NOT given it such high rating as the second one was flatter than a car run over by a monster truck then sent through a crusher. Also read a different series and it was horrible, so just giving up trying to find anything readable from this line of books.

In this book 2 of the witch cat mystery, Terra who is a witch in the form of a cat, is busy training Abigail to be the head witch or leader of the coven of wiccans. Strange forces of evil keep trying to upset the coven, separate and kill them but their powers together seem to allow them to continue with their good work to protect the town. Missing the ninth Wiccan to close the circle and allow the coven more power, they meet Charlotte who is the great niece of their deceased friend. Will she help them or is she an evil being trying to invade and destroy the coven? Will Abigail learn enough about her powers and will she come into her full strength in time to save the coven and the town? This is a delightful tale of good versus evil with wonderful characters, lovable creatures including cats, dogs and fairies. You find yourself cheering for Terra, Abigail and the ladies of the coven to defeat the evil surrounding them. The book leaves you wanting to read the next book in the series to find out if good will out fuel evil and keep the world safe. Excellent book.
Although this is the second book in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone novel as I did. I seem to be on a roll recently reading about women who have been transformed into cats and can't break the spell, for whatever reason (see my reviews of the Caitlyn series if interested). This one, however, is a lot less gory and intense than the Caitlyn series, which is a welcome change right now.
All of the characters are well-written, and the story will keep you reading to find out what is going to happen next. My favorite character is Pixel, a fluffy orange cat who always has some of the cutest lines, and who befriends a butterfly.
Highly recommend this story for readers who enjoy cozies, history and/or fantasy. I am hoping to find time to work Book 1 into my schedule before the release of Book 3!
WOW! Powerful ending to a fast-paced tale where not everyone or thing is as it seems and ancient beings from many different belief systems unite. Clearly meant as a continuation of Book 1, this tale is nonetheless self-contained and gives you a complete and satisfying story. But a Book 3 is planned and Book 1 does provide a fuller background as well as fleshing out details one must take for granted by the second phase of the story. If you enjoy history and fantasy, this will be exactly your cup of tea. Feline and canine familiars included!
Terra, Pixel and Abigail have to go the one place where they can hopefully save mankind.....The Dark Corner. It is the only way to stop the Witch Hunters who have come to the Appalachian Mountains in search of the last witch of Salem. This book has a lot of different cultures, Appalachian folklore, Celtic legends, and Native American mysticism.
Great addition to this series. Like the first book, I couldn't put it down. The narration coming from a cat is different, even if she is a witch. The society members are quite interesting and I like how Vicki ties together history, mysticism, and modern life together.
Now we just have to be patient and wait for book 3 to visit our new friends from this series. Highly recommend.
