Just about the best series of novels since, and sometimes surpassing "The Horus Heresy". Think you're in for a dull xenos ride with oversized 'roaches and old metal Space Marines from Heresy days, think again. The descrtptions for what what lies ahead for the reader don't even come close to what unfolds before you're eyes.

С этой книгой я сам себя немного обманул. Прочитав аннотацию и посмотрев на картинку с обложки, я подумал, что наконец-то вышло что-то про орков. 99% Вахи написана про космодесантников, которые уже в печёнках сидят. Именно из-за этого я когда-то покупал Скарсника в оригинале, чтобы хоть как-то порадовать себя Вархаммером про другие расы. Как оказалось, орки хоть тут и есть, но...
"Пришествие Зверя" - это всего треть цикла, в который входит 4 романа, написанные 4 разными авторами. Тут кстати задумка интересная. Все повести - это как части сериала. Писались они поочерёдно, передавая эстафетную палочку от одного автора другому. Смогли ли авторы выдержать целостность сюжета?
Начинает марафон Дэн Абнетт романов "Я - Резня". На мой взгляд, отличный старт. Читал с огромным удовольствием. На планете Ардамантуа взошла луна, да не простая луна, а набитая орками, которые штурмуют планету. На защиту Ардамантуа отправляются Имперские Кулаки. Имхо, Абнетт - один из лучших авторов, пишущих книги для БЛ. Но, как известно, он не может написать все книги (а очень хотелось бы), поэтому авторов много, но качество у многих сильно хромает. Абнетт написал задорно, сочно, хороший боевичок. Расставил приоритеты - на Терре по сути безвластие. Все успокоились, что в Империуме тишина, войны давно нету, люди из Совета разбосячились, расплылись в телесах, строят козни друг против друга. Великий магистр ассасинов Дракан Вангорич понимает, что это путь в никуда, поэтому пора заняться теневыми войнами, пока не поздно. Свои же мысли он пытается втюхать инквизитору Виенанд. Интересно, что Вангорич понимает, что ассасины были созданы и мотивированы Императором, но их место по контролю уже давно теперь занято Инквизицией.
В общем, старт хороший, добрый.
А вот дальше я слегка приуныл. Роб Сандерс не самый для меня интересный автор. Он вроде продолжил сюжет, но по накалу тут явный спад. Всё ушло в политику и скучные диалоги. Отъевшиеся лорды не видят проблемы в атаке орков, Имперские Кулаки в полном ауте - кому стать за защиту? Роб Сандерс ввёл новых персонажей, новые места, но такое ощущение, что другим авторам они не интересны, потому что больше они нигде не упоминаются. Явный минус.
Следующий роман Торпа. Чуть получше, но всё равно та же грязная политика. И орки теперь уже угрожают Терре.
И вот Аннандейлу досталась финальная часть сборника. У него получилось чуть менее эпично, чем у Абнетта, но концовка романа мне доставила удовольствие. Там наконец-то орки получили хоть какое-то лицо.
Моя основная претензия к сборнику - а орки-то где? Они просто тут бесконечное мясо, которое можно заменить кем угодно. Эльдары, некроны, тираниды, хомячки - кто угодно. Просто кто-то валит целыми пачками и валится кусками мяса на землю. Нет ни слова о мотивации орков, ни кто ими управляет в данный момент - ничего. Это скучно. Это не то, чего я ждал от книги. Забавным показалось только то, что орки в данном сюжете играют роль Крестового похода Императора=) По сути, это то же самое, только раса другая=)
Я очень надеюсь, что во втором сборнике всё будет пободрее, и будут какие-то сюжеты со стороны зеленокожих. По сути, все 4 романа сборника можно было впихнуть в один на 300 страниц. Очень много воды, очень мало экшена. Но по блату накину 7/10.

Estoy entre el 4 y el 5.
De todos los libros de Warhammer este me ha parecido posiblemente el menos bueno, pero como el Padrino III, no deja de ser bueno igual.
Como es evidente, todos esperamos a los orkos y se me ha hecho muy largo hasta que han aparecido, aunque siendo Dan Abnett el que nos adentra en ese mundo no se puede hacer mal. Personajes bien construidos y de la mitad hacia el final trepidante.
El segundo libro no me ha gustado tanto, me ha costado acordarme de los personajes y había capítulos que no me aportaban gran cosa pero también, cuando ha empezado la acción se ha convertido en algo adictivo que no se podía dejar.
El tercer y cuarto libro ya estaba dentrísimo así que, me los he leído en dos días con un ritmo trepidante y algunas historias que te tocan el corazón.
¿El final? Las últimas cuatro hojas hasta la última frase me han dejado descolocadísima.

Explosive start to the rise of the beast
Dan Abnett starts the series off with an explosive intro into the world of the Imperium during a time of complacency and builds up a great rumbling beast of characters and settings.
Rob Sanders further builds on the climax of Dan's novel and explores in great detail the ramifications of the rise of the Beast and his incredible awesome might.
Gav Thorpe then shows us how the Imperium plans to defend against this awesome destructive force and gives us an epic battle to witness.
David Annandale then shows us the horror of what the beast is capable and how under prepared this Imperium is by demonstrating a truely outrageous plan that even though you know its an awful plan, you can't help but wonder what if.
Overall a fantastic volume whereby each author brings in some great characters and some fantastic set pieces that are truly memorable.
Can't wait to read the next volume!

A mixed bag , but an excellent mixed bag.
I came to this for the promise of super advanced orks taking the imperium to task.
And in some ways that is there.
But this turns more into a tale of the imperium it's self.
And as it started I worried it would be a droll affair of space marines posturing and saying brother more than an 80s wrestler.
Juxtaposed with some fawning over the imperium.
But I was soon swept up in a galaxy spanning tale of the terror of an encroaching seemingly unstoppable foe, one who has risen from nuisance to genuinely horrifying threat.
The weight of legacy both to an inherited lineage, and to those you lose along the way.
Snap shots of war and struggle with some surprises along the way.
And a through line of a master assasin, waiting in the wings to do his duty and thin the herd of corrupt bureaucrats , getting swept up in the power games and shadow plays of the highest offices of a galactic empire.
Considering this volume was 4 books by 4 different authors the narrative held up remarkably well. With shared characters being delightfully consistent ( bar perhaps some differences in naming preferences) and new characters folded in to mixed results.
Special mention the final stretch, the final authors ability to eloquently describe the grim fatalistism of a seemingly insurmountable task was palbable.
If you enjoy a 40k book, or want some sci fi action with a strong spine of politics may be worth a read.

Not a phenomenal book on its own, although it tees up a really interesting scenario for a 40k book.
Basically this book doesn't have much story but is a large set up for the series which Is what you can expect from a first volume.
