Veterinarian Sunny Carmichael takes a vacation from her job in California and returns to her hometown of Hope Valley, Texas, at her mother’s request to look into some cows that mysteriously died at a ranch. The ranch in question just happens to be owned by Sunny’s ex-boyfriend, Jack Slade, and it’s not long before old feelings begin to resurface between the two. This was an enjoyable second-chance romance with two likable lead characters. Jack’s young daughter, Tori, was so sweet. I really liked Sunny’s friends who called themselves the Texas Sweethearts. And Sunny’s big goofy dog Simba was so lovable. A cute and fun story.
Technically he didn't cheat. h caught him and OW in compromising position, he claimed she kissed HIM. h decided to dump his sorry ass, and instead of actually following her and properly trying to explain shit when she was leaving town, he got shitfaced and slept with that same OW, made her pregnant, found out after a month when he was just about to go to h to ask to reconcile. In essence proving everything bad h thought about him: 1. He was way bigger than the OW, yet h saw no sign of struggle for either of them 2. He COULD have tried harder if he really wanted to and not sleep with the OW 3. One doesn't just sleep with someone, gets a baby on the way and marry them seconds after declaring their love to someone else, so if he love h so much, the baby and marriage with the OW wouldn't have happened. He was also right. HE made the choice of not harshly pushing the OW away. HE decided his ego was bigger than h's feeling of hurt. HE decided to accept drinks from that SAME OW and get shitfaced. HE slept with OW and gotten her pregnant. HE never gave h an impression her life was equally important to his. It was all on HIM.
1.5* The cheat thing brought me here but oh boy what a bore. Both characters were likeable and there wasn't much more going on unless you want to study idioms, it's choc full of them. Oh and it has a dopey dog that thinks its a cat.
Mindy Neff's Courted by a Cowboy was an entertaining read. On a day that was full of hurry up and wait type errands, it was nice floating away to Texas and let my mind focus on someone else's problem for awhile. Ms. Neff has a magic way with words, that paints a vivid word picture of her settings. I could see the town, the ranch and the countryside, like I was standing there observing from a corner! I love her Texas Sweethearts, four childhood friends whose love for each other continues over space and time. Mindy Neff truly understands the importance of soul sisterhood to women. The support of a good friend in time of crisis is a theme that comes through loud and clear in Courted by a Cowboy. I finished this book in one day, though as I said, I had a day with a lot of sitting and waiting. However, it is one of those romances you want to lose yourself in for a day. It would make a good vacation or beach day read. Again, I have wish list the rest of the series due to a very full TBR shelf, which may take me a life time to finish! I do intend to finish the series, especially after reading the excerpt of book 2 included at the end of Courted by a Cowboy!
I enjoyed this book. It has a straight forward story with a mystery about the past. It also has twists at the end that you will not expect. The story revolves around cattle dying on a ranch in Texas.
Sunny was hurt ten years ago by her only boyfriend. A guy she gave her heart and body to. Now her mom calls and says that Jackson is having a problem with cows dying on his ranch and her mom wants Sunny to come back home and investigate the problem. Sunny as a veterinarian has a duty to report any infectious diseases to the government so it's not outside what she does daily.
The problem is her heart and the awful breakup she had with Jackson ten years ago. Can she overlook what he did to her? She has three best friends that live in her hometown that she really wants to see so she decides to go home.
Jackson was at the wrong place at the wrong time ten years ago. Instead of talking to him Sunny runs off and won't let anyone tell Jackson where she is. He can't find her and so he makes a mistake that ends up being thr best thing that ever happened to him. His daughter, Victoria.
Sunny and Jack were sweethearts in High School until Sunny caught Jack in a kiss with another woman. Sunny ran to California where she went to school to be a Veterinarian, who now works for the Government investigating epidemics. Sunny’s mom calls and asks her to come home and investigate some cattle deaths on Jack’s ranch. Sunny’s not sure about working with Jack but she agrees and heads to Texas. Once there she works with Jack closely on the cattle deaths and at the same time reigniting old feelings. Jack now has a daughter Victoria (Tori) who is nine. Sunny and Tori form a close bond. This is a very good book. I enjoyed both Sunny’s and Jack’s characters. I liked how Sunny took to Tori despite her being the daughter of the other woman. I thought Sunny grew emotionally as she interacted with her Mom, Jack and Tori. Jack had changed since Sunny knew him and he was a very caring dad. He had turned himself into an upstanding member of the Community despite his reputation when he was younger. The other Texas Sweethearts Donnetta and Tracy Lynn are fun secondary characters. I would definitely read more books in the series and by this author.
Book 1 of the Texas Sweethearts series finds us with Sunny Carmichael in LA alone in her luxurious condo with her dog Simba as company. Her fiancee has just dumped her. As she's sitting there, her mother calls. She tells her that the small town hero (and ex-boyfriend) is in trouble. Some of his cattle have been dying very suspiciously, could Sunny (who is a very renowned vet) come help? Sunny does not want to. See, Jack broke her heart ten years ago when they were dating very seriously which is why she left the town to follow her dreams and build her career as a vet. She finally agrees and upon seeing Jack again for the first time, it is noticeable that their feelings for each other are not gone. They may have moved on with their lives but they are still soul mates. A dance around their feeling and the mystery of the dead cattle keeps them on their toes. This is a great cowboy read and it is not even THAT long so I do highly recommend.
I received this book for free through Voracious Readers Only in return for an honest review.
This is such a sweet love story! I loved the main characters, got a good sense of their traits early on and it was lovely to watch the story unfold. From the start I was stuck into the story.
The setting is told in great detail, helping me to picture life on a cattle ranch in Texas. I also loved the expressions used throughout. I don't know if they're actual expressions but it gave a real sense of "storytelling" like someone was sitting beside me telling the story. They were also very funny and I found myself laughing out loud a few times.
We also got to meet some of the characters from the following books in the series and I'm intrigued about how those relationships develop throughout the series.
Looking forward to checking out the rest of this series!
I was lucky enough to receive this book from BookBub. I hope the prospective reader will read this review fully before making any prejudgments on the book. I will give the book my thoughts. These thoughts are completely my own and not swayed in any way by anyone else’s reviews or opinions.
My Rating: I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because I have read it more than once. I liked the plot and the storyline. I wouldn’t say this is completely groundbreaking because there are a lot of other books out there with this same theme. I just fell in love with the characters and the addition of Tori so much that I want to read it again and again. If you like second chance romance, this is a sweet one to read.
This is the first book I have read by this author only due to the fact it was a freebie on Kindle. I really enjoyed this story of Summer Carmichael coming back home to Hope Valley and rekindling the relationship of her first and only love Jackson Slade, along with his six-year-old daughter Victoria.
I plan on reading more books by Mindy Neff. I think I am going to be able to add her to my list of favorite authors.
I'm looking forward to reading Book 2 and finding out more about the surprise baby of Donetta Presley and Hope Valley's hot Sheriff Storm Carmichael. It looks to be more than a whirl-wind romance.
Sunny is at the top of her game in her field as a veterinarian so when her Mom calls and says a rancher is in having cattle trouble and asks her to come home and help out she relents. Jackson Slade has built his ranch back up after his Father had run it into the ground. Jackson has provided a wonderful life for his little girl Tori. When Sunny, the love of Jacksons life returns to town he doesn't know how to handle seeing her and working along side her to find out the reason for the death of some of his cattle. This is the perfect second chance at romance story filled with some action and mystery. Loved the start to this book series!
Sunny Carmichael is called back to her hometown of Hope Valley, Texas. Taken a vacation from her job in California.
There's a mysterious illness that is killing cows at the ranch. Veterinarian Sunny is called in. Only to find out the farm happens to be her ex- boyfriend Jack Slade. Can they work together? How many cows will die before they find the cause? Will the illness effect the other animals? Will Jack get a second chance with Sunny? And what about her job in California?

This was a great start in a new series. It was sweet and wholesome and very well written. Overall a great second chance romance. Love the small town vibe - very realistic. Jack and Sunny were just perfect for each other. They have a great connection and chemistry. The characters are strong, well written, developed and likable. The plot was entertaining and this book just really drew me in. I can't wait to read the next in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This was such a good book! I loved Sunny and Jack! Their love story was sweet, sexy, and cute. Tori and Simba were a delight! 😁 I love dogs and the way Sunny treated Simba made me smile and touched my heart! There is such pleasure in reading a very sexy, sweet, love story with a touch of mystery, children, animals, close family and friendships with low angst that is heartwarming and hits just the right note!!! I highly recommend this book... It is a really enjoyable story!!!!😊
Courted by a Cowboy by Mindy Neff was an alright book in my opinion. I think romance novels are not too bad. It all depends on the book, and I think this book was pretty enjoyable to read. The plot and conflict were all pretty good, and I liked that the book had a happy ending. The cattle getting sick was something that I found interesting, since I wanted to know why they were getting sick. Despite what they did in the past, I’m glad the 2 main characters got to work things out and now love each other again. Overall, it’s not a bad book, and I did enjoy reading it.
This is a light, delightful Texas cowboy romance. A few things set it apart. First, the writing and editing are excellent. Second, the plot is just different enough to be fresh and interesting. I learned something about veterinarians and the medical side of ranching. Third, the romance was thoroughly believable, with both characters taking responsibility for issues and both growing through the process of meeting again and working together to solve a ranching problem.
It's the type of story where no one has faults. They live in Mayberry and it's a wonderful place where nothing bad happens. I like her friends personalities and physical traits better. Her naturally curly hair, thinness, and tininess are the only physical characteristics I remember. She's too good to be true. She doesn't have a selfish bone in her body and is actually really smart. Not tell me she's smart then show me she's dumber than dirt, but she solved the problem. It was okay.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I absolutely loved the book! Her characters are interesting and this storyline was wonderful. Sunny returns home after 10 years to help an old beau with his cattle farm, after mysterious deaths of his cattle. and the sparks start to fly again, after all the heartache of the past Sunny and Jackson still love each other, but are fighting it. A really wonderful story and I especially love Sunny's dog, Simba.
It’s romance in its greatest form. Sweet, sexy, funny characters that make you want to quit your day job, so you can continue reading about all of them. Jack is such a dream man, all tough and sexy, and Sunny is full of surprises. Love it when the lady of the story is fun, not a regular damsel in distress which in most novels is turning into a cliche. This book will make your day! Can’t wait for the next one.
When her past blind sides her after her mother asks for a favor, Sunny is professional enough to do her job.
She came back to find out w.by a cow died. Sunny also looked forward to seeing the friends and hadn't seen in a while. Her head and her heart just better start communicating a little better so there's no confusion about the relationship status she wants and , oh nuts! Jake is just too dang hot. And.... Great read!
Sunny left her hometown after catching Jack kissing another woman. Ten years pass before she comes back after a call from her mother. Jack now has a 9 year old daughter he is raising himself. He has 2 dead cows on his farm and Sunny is determined to figure it out before she loses her heart to Jack again. Do they get their second chance or does Sunny leave for California again?
I enjoyed reading this book. The story devices around cattle dying on a ranch. Sunny goes back to Texas where this ranch is. She use to date the rancher Jack. Her mother calls her and tells her about Jack's cattle dying. Sunny is a veterinarian which she has a duty to report and infectious diseases to the government. The problem she has is the awful breakup she had with Jack ten years ago, but she does have friends there to. I recommend this book.
Free read, new author. Sweet and entertaining if a bit of a pat ending. I enjoyed how this all played out and the characters involved, though Jackson was an idiot in my thinking. The fact Sunny was a highly qualified vet was wonderful and that she hadn’t sat around pining for Jackson. I liked that Jackson admitted and held himself responsible for the situation ten years ago, but he says Sunny is also to blame for running away. Maybe a little bit, but he was caught with another woman in his arms and her lips on his. Jackson is a big, strong man, who could have easily evaded or repulsed that woman. He didn’t, and Sunny saw that fact quite clearly. Their ages at the time, 19 & 22 had a lot to do with it as well. What I couldn’t forgive him for was allowing that same O/W to ply him with alcohol, he didn’t drink ever as his dad was a drunk, and to then have sex with her. The fact he also NEVER questions the paternity when presented with the pregnancy, he just marries her the next day, is totally stupid. I’m pretty sure the O/W was not shy at being with other men either, as we find out later on. A paternity test should be done to settle things, if for no other reason than to stop Duane from interfering in their lives. Sunny even thinks there is nothing of Jackson in her, but Tori is his daughter in all the ways that count. Though I enjoyed this, the commonly used O/W situation in their past, though better done than other books out there, still niggled and annoyed. I may read the next book but I won’t be buying it.
I have a particular fondness for cowboy romances, and this story exceeded all my expectations. The chemistry between Sunny and Slade was beautifully crafted; I could truly feel the emotions conveyed through the writing. I was completely captivated by the lovable Tori, who was wiser beyond her years. How can we not mention Simba who added a delightful charm that filled the little moments. A fantastic read!
Heart scarred, former small-town Texas girl gets dumped by her political office seeking fiance, and gets a frantic call from her Mother saying that she is desperately needed at home. So answering the summons, she goes home to Texas to find the man that hurt her ten years earlier needing her help.
Veterinarian, Sunny, returns to her home town after she is notified that there have been cattle found dead at a local ranch. Upon her return she is reunited with her childhood love. Together they work to find the guilty parties. Cute and very entertaining story especially surrounding a young girl and all her animal friends .
A great book. Not totally clean but not grossly dirty either. Ten years after a bad situation had driven Jack and Sunny apart, dead cattle bring them back together. How can they handle the scars and fears from the past to take appropriate steps now? Maybe a dog and nine year girl can help?
She felt betrayed when she caught the love of her life kissing another woman. She ran away without looking back and never even gave him a chance to explain. But she never stopped loving him. Now her meddling mother convinces her to come home for a month to help him and their town.
This story has so much packed into it. The story begins with two people torn apart by wrong actions and broken hearts. Years later coming together to solve a mystery and work through the wrongs of their past. Add in a loveable child and a goofy dog, you have the makings of a fantastic book. Looking forward to book2. I'd happily recommend Courted by a Cowboy.
Great characters, sad circumstance. I get so frustrated with people who don't talk, but it makes a good plot for a story. Loved the little girl. Wish I had true girlfriend like the main character.
