Excellent action thriller!! This book is ripped from the news headlines of today, with cyber security being such a hot topic in our world. John Seal, ex-military, now runs a cyber security company that will do all it can to keep the nation safe. Seal is an ex-black ops guy, he knows how to get things done, and is very sure of himself. However he is still human and an enormous personal mistake puts everything he has worked for, plus the country he loves, at extreme risk!! Great characters grab your attention with fast-paced action and exciting scenes rolling by as you quickly turn the pages! John Seal is a new behind the scenes guy that I am excited to read more about! I received an ARC of this story from author Michael D. Wright, who I thank for entrance into an intriguing new series, and I am able to put my thoughts in this review for any suspense/crime/thriller lovers looking for a 5 STAR story!!
A thrilling cyber security story, embroiled with intrigue, mystery suspense, spooks, unexpected turn of events, full of action packed scenes. An undesirable yet existing cyber hacks reality embedded in out present day world presented at its worst, a page turner! Realistic down to earth characters, with the typical human flaws. An exciting first book of a series I’ll definitely follow.
"They're talking about a cyber-attack on us. It sounds like it's beyond the planning stages…”
Author/cinematographer Michael D. Wright makes his literary debut with the John Seals Novels – ELECTRIC EEL being the first edition. Categorized as a mystery/thriller, this is an impressive first novel form a very talented artist who brings his story to life visually with the fine style of writing.
An example of his prose (and the mood of the book) follows: ‘John Seal's feet turned to stone, and the sensation was creeping up to his knees as he squatted behind a thick tree trunk at the rear of the Hungarian School of Science Library. He had jetted to Budapest on an all-night flight from Chicago in luxury on a Bombardier Global Express, a Homeland Security lease. Now, in the pre-dawn hours, all hint of luxury was gone. He was waiting in the shadows surveilling the library's loading dock less than twenty yards away. At precisely 0430 hours, just as he had been briefed to expect, he heard the metal door stenciled KARBANTARTAS, maintenance, creak open and a rotund woman wearing baggy black slacks and a white blouse appeared. His pulse swished in his ears while he watched as she pushed a cart piled high with rubbish toward the trash bin. Crouching low, John noiselessly collected his backpack that held his camera and lens, a laptop, and his communication equipment. He waited until the drum of the cart's wheels stopped, and the woman began hoisting the trash into the bin before he darted through the door. What John had failed to notice was the tiny glow of a cigarette grow bright and fade away as a short man watching him from across the street lifted a cell phone to his ear. Inside, a dim yellow light flickered from a dirty bulb in the hall ceiling. Against the wall were stacks and stacks of wooden crates full of old books. Buckets, brooms, and mops were pushed in an alcove beside the door. John had previously studied the entire plan of the building. Using his photographic memory, he had taken a mental picture of the layout of the Renaissance Revival structure left from a time when Prussian Kings ruled. He recalled that image and used it to guide him to the fourth floor where he would set up shop. The sound of drumming wheels started again — the woman was heading back. Knowing he had only seconds to make it to the stairwell, he sprinted down the hall. Just as he ducked underneath the stairs, John heard jingling keys. The woman began to hum cheerfully, the hall went dark, and the door banged shut. He opened his pack. The Sig Sauer felt snug holstered in the small of his back when he bent down and dug out his flashlight. He switched it on and followed the cone of light around to the front of the metal stairway and headed up. At the first floor, he paused and held his breath observing.’ In one page Michael has us hooked!
The plot is well summarized: ‘Veteran ex-black-ops agent, and cybersecurity expert, John Seal is brutal like John Wick, smart as Jack Reacher, and can disappear quicker than Jason Bourne. John Seal is tasked with safeguarding the country’s vital electrical infrastructure from diabolical hackers. He is sent to Budapest on a routine intel gathering mission and inadvertently discovers a planned cyber attack is imminent. The target — US power grids! With the risk of a terrorist attack on red alert, the Secretary of Homeland Security presses John to finish developing the software his agency is designing that detects unauthorized cyber activity and blocks an intrusion. But the code is incomplete. Now, John is forced to hire a new software developer to expedite the process. A woman determined to prove her skills and win the trust of her new boss. When John’s elderly grandfather and old friend become pawns in a cruel game to distract John’s efforts, he is forced to use his black-ops training to stay one step ahead of the Terrorists. Meanwhile, he is the only person who has the expertise and tenacity to root out the bad actors and defend the US against cyber attack. Will John’s prowess and stealth be enough to save the nation from a countrywide blackout? And unmask the puppet master politicians pulling strings behind the scenes…’
Excellent thriller well written – this is an impressive first novel form a man who already knows his craft. Recommended.
This is a rather overdone spy and thriller novel. A single man takes the place of a James Bond type, the controller of the CIA cybersecurity team, and a whole team of Navy Seals; oh, and he sleeps with the brand new hire who is an obvious honey trap and has not been properly cleared, and never questions why she speaks Hungarian when she has a Latina surname and she comes from Miami.
The various departments like CIA, Homeland Security etc. do not send out their highest ranking desk executive who has all the passwords and codes and whose fingerprints and iris scans open all the doors, to be a black ops sniper and shooter on his own in the dark in Eastern Europe or in the Hoover Dam. (And I have done that tour and they count you in and count you out, they don't mislay six burly tourist men laden with weapons.) Apart from anything else, the executive is getting paid too much to replace easily, and there are cheaper people with the skills required who don't need to know too many details.
Matters in Hungary get a bit confused. And violent. So I am in no way sure how the US team would be able to find that the phones of two men meeting in a public square have had their call logs scrubbed. Unless they took the phones away, which I did not seem to get told, there is no way to find that information.
Then the firewall attacks. If there is a DDoS attack this doesn't destroy a firewall. This looks for ways into a system and can overwhelm the server (which is bouncing all the pings) which has to shut down access to the site. This is not the same as breaking down the firewall and forcing a way inside to wreak damage, which is what is described.
If you want to read this as almost non stop (there is an interlude on a farm) fantasy thriller fiction, have fun. I spotted a few spelling errors but not nearly so many as in some independently published books, and I like that we are given some family background and evidence of caring for others. I was sent an e-ARC by the author. I chose to read in my own time and review. This is an unbiased review.
I love the premise of Electric Eel by Michael D Wright. I am a techie and truly enjoy reading about someone who gets into the tech behind the situation. John Seal did just that. He got into the tech, the people, the story and used what he found to flush out the culprit.
The book started off way too slowly. I knew it would build, so I forced myself to continue reading. I was not disappointed that I persevered as it did come to life and kept my interest. I would have enjoyed Electric Eel more if Wright kept my attention from the beginning and kept me in the dark throughout the book. I felt that Seal wasn’t as intuitive as he could or should have been. As the reader I want to be surprised, intrigued, interested about the plot. I could see things that made the read less interesting and thus less intriguing. I don’t want to know the ending before I get to the end.
That said Electric Eel is a good book and I think most people will enjoy the manner in which John Seal solved the dilemma he found himself facing. If you enjoy tech mystery and are intrigued by the way a story unfolds, then Electric Eel by Michael Wright is a good book for you. Take the chance, keep reading, and you should find the book interesting and at times scary. Could this happen for real? And do we have people like John Seal working to keep our grid safe? Wright posed several real questions about the fate of the country’s future with cyber threats mounting on a daily basis. Are we as safe as we are led to believe??
This definitely addresses current cyber and other National security issues.
On a special mission in Budapest John is watching the rear of the Hungarian School of Science Library with intent to sneak inside. Although John is an extremely skilled black-ops operative, he is still human and missed seeing the dim glow of a cigarette brighten then fade. John does get into the building and manages to get critical pictures as well as part of a conversation and send them back to his security team before the cigarette smoker attacks. This leads John’s organization, a secrete security group working with Homeland Security on National Security, to get intel on a major intent of a cyber breach. The intel is not enough to pinpoint the exact intent of the attack or where but he has a supper team working on it.
John faces additional danger as well as when he discovers there is a mole and other internal threats working to preventing the attack.
I received this book as an ARC member for an honest review.
ONE HARD HITTING ADVENTURE!!! Talk about life in fast lane. Wow! This is one action packed, fast paced, hard hitting, adrenaline pumping, nailbiting, spine tingling, nerve racking, heart pounding, pulse racing, page turning bombshell that captivates from the start. All the twists and turns, ins and outs, ups and downs, along with a few glitches here and there make for one adrenaline induced experience. On fast tracks to get in and get out this is an extremely strong plot and fantastic storyline the keeps you engaged throughout. The characters are so realistic and believable. Their personalities are unique with qualities and traits that flow smoothly through the entire tale. The scenes are so graphically detailed it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. You have no trouble picturing each scenario as it plays out perfectly. Michael did a remarkable job bringing this read to life flawlessly. Awesome job Michael, thanks for sharing this bad boy with us.
This book has everything I look for in a black ops thriller. John Seal is an interesting character. Despite having a broad range of skills, he is human enough to have issues. The story is quite interesting, if a little predictable. He runs a cyber sleuth office in Chicago, and his employees are all unique and interesting. The office and his adjoining residence are in the top of an office tower in the Chicago Loop. With all his business acumen and spy skills, he is caught in a honey trap that is obvious to everyone, including the reader, but me. Excitement and suspense are on every page as he fights a terrorist group determined to hack the United States and to kill him. The only thing that keeps this rating from five stars is an ending that peters out rather than ends. Perhaps we should look forward to more episodes in this story, but many issues remain unresolved.
Great book. Fast moving. Lots of action and plenty of intrigue.
John Seal appears to be a human being and not just a former military personnel, who is stuck in that mode. He uses his abilities, is tasked with doing ops again but always maintains his humanity. He is relatable to me.
The intrigue is a certain character that will have to be watched in upcoming books. Is this person what they appear to be or what is happening in the story.
The book reads well as a standalone book. There is a prequel to this book called, Caught Fire, it will give a little more understanding into the characters. I know I need to go review it for my intriguing character.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
This is a fast moving action packed book that will keep you turning the page.
John Seal is former military that runs a cyber corp in Chicago that assists Homeland Security. He is scary good during his missions, but outside the missions, he's human enough to show that he's not so perfect and lets his "little head" make unsavoury decisions that could be fatal.
John's character as well as those of his staff are quite interesting and they each have great skills that brings this book together. The cyber terrorism in this book makes everything a little more realistic and plausible. This book was a great read and I can't wait for the next one!
I received an Advance Readers Copy of this book and freely and willingly leave my review.
John Seal is a man of many talents, not the least of which is his ability to serve his country. However, when Seal's security agency, operating under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security, is involved in defeating a cyber attack on US electrical grids, something deeper is in play. What seems a targeted attack soon develops into a sinister effort to bring the US to its knees. Family, friends, employees and love interests are involved in this wildly entertaining adventure. This was my first John Seal Novel, but I am now hooked.

Cyber terrorism is something that you might see in today's headlines. Definitely more fun here in the fictional world.
Things start off calmly enough, but as things start to move, buckle down for one intense ride. A combination of black ops and cyber security thriller, I found the story to be quite gripping. The story was very well written, down to earth with lots of action. That doesn't mean some of it wasn't predictable, but that did not detract from the tale. Fast paced and hard to put own, I look forward to reading more by this author.
Highly recommended.

An exciting spy-thriller, Electric Eel introduces John Seal, ex-CIA cyber expert, working for the Government to foil terrorist cyber-attacks on the US. Michael D Wright has a discerning mind for detail that shows John Seal is flawed and human, thus frail in the face of a 'honey-trap' that enables a mole to infiltrate Seal's new system for detecting and preventing enemy attacks on the US internet and other technology that provide security and vital services nationwide. An excellent start to the series - get Electric Eel today and buckle up for a wild ride!
Don't start this book of you want to get any sleep. The story grabs you from the beginning and holds you in it's grip until the last word. Such tension, such drama. Lots of running and fighting. Backstabbing and corrupt government officials. Everything you could ask for in a black ops novel. Good character development, only thing that was off to me was that John was so naive and unconcerned about his family. And what cyber security company closes shop at five o'clock? I thought terrorism never slept. Otherwise this is a good start to the series. Be sure to check out the prequel 'Caught Fire'
I really became engaged in this story and really did not want it to end. I did have a bit of trouble starting it but it picked right up and caught me. I enjoy reading about Seals and other awesome military-type people and I agree with others that this guy did not act on clues as he should have. Still, the story was really good and worth the read. I will want to read any upcoming books this author has.

John Seal knows how to get the tough jobs done, thriving on action and intellect. Unfortunately he can get distracted by a highly intelligent, beautiful woman who is out to destroy all he holds dear; country, family, and career. This is a fast paced thriller that keeps you off balance right along with John. Can't wait for the story to continue!!
Great read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Kept me up late more than once as I couldn't quit reading ... just one more page turned in to another 20 + pages. Great action & and suspense that will keep your interest.

This book follows the new spy mission of John Seal, a cybersecurity expert and the challenges that come his way. It was an interesting read and was entertaining. There were a few parts that seemed to drag out like how he cleaned his fish after catching it but overall a nice book!!

This is such an action packed read which will keep you guessing until the last page. He needs to go to Budapest to prevent hackers from causing problems. He finds a plot to hijack the US power lines. What will he do now? How will he do that? See what will happen

Wow... This is an Intriguing techno-thriller that reflects the times. John Seal, an ex-CIA and black-ops agent in human. He has one fault that almost causes a huge catastrophe. This book is well written, and I could not put it down. If you love thriller with a hero that is believable, I highly recommend this novel.
This is John Seal again but post Pandora and black ops off the books spook stuff. John has a private cyber security company contracted to Homeland Security. When a cyber attack hits some of the power grid, John is tossed back to a black ops mission he ran with Max on come and the come were not well monitored.
A well written action novel that is ruined by making the action dependent on a whole lot of things that don't add up. A security expert that has no concept of security? Parachute into a place you can drive into along the regular traffic? Too much nonsense. This is an honest ARC review.
Electric Eel: A John Seal Novel by Michael D. Wright is a wonderful story to read by a brand new author for me. This is a wonderful story wich is full with a lot of action. I lvoed reading this story .

What an exciting and intriguing book. This is such a real crime scene that could be happening right now. John Seal is an awesome character. I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a thrilling suspense.
This story follows John Seal after his time with Pandora as he runs his own cyber security company under contract to Homeland Security. Electric Eel is a well-developed spy story that is action packed and filled with intrigue. Definitely a must read in the John Seal series
If you want a book that you can t put down ,one where you must get to see what happens on the next page, and a book to learn from ,Electric Eel is a must. Kudos to Michael Wright for creating such a book with a hero that has human flaws.
