Ace Lone Wolf and the Black Pearl Treasure

Rate this book
Chasing lost treasure never leads to anything but misery...
That’s one thing that Ace Lone Wolf, a half-Apache gunslinger with a penchant for trouble, knows from experience. Yet somehow he still lets himself get talked into helping an old mountain man search for a wrecked Spanish galleon that legend has it is carrying a fortune in black pearls.

Before he knows it, Ace is up to his neck in trouble once again. The notorious outlaws Frank and Jesse James want his head. The US Cavalry is hot on his trail. A murderous doctor wants his scalp for his collection. Some days it feels like everyone is shooting at him.

But none of those dangers prepare him for what he finds once he actually makes it to the treasure ship and learns what is guarding it…

The Lone Wolf Howls series does not need to be read in order.

Born in 1965, I grew up on a working cattle ranch in the desert thirty miles from Wickenburg, Arizona, which at that time was exactly the middle of nowhere. Work, cactus and heat were plentiful, forms of recreation were not. The TV got two channels when it wanted to, and only in the evening after someone hand cranked the balky diesel generator to life. All of which meant that my primary form of escape was reading.

At 18 I fled to Tucson where I attended the University of Arizona. A number of fruitless attempts at productive majors followed, none of which stuck. Discovering I liked writing, I tried journalism two separate times, but had to drop it when I realized that I had no intention of conducting interviews with actual people but preferred simply making them up.

After graduating with a degree in Creative Writing in 1989, I backpacked Europe with a friend and caught the travel bug. With no meaningful job prospects, I hitchhiked around the U.S. for a while then went back to school to learn to be a high school English teacher. I got a teaching job right out of school in the middle of the year. The job lasted exactly one semester, or until I received my summer pay and realized I actually had money to continue backpacking.

The next stop was Australia, where I hoped to spend six months, working wherever I could, then a few months in New Zealand and the South Pacific. However, my plans changed irrevocably when I met a lovely Swiss woman, Claudia, in Alice Springs. Undoubtedly swept away by my lack of a job or real future, she agreed to allow me to follow her back to Switzerland where, a few months later, she gave up her job to continue traveling with me. Over the next couple years we backpacked the U.S., Eastern Europe and Australia/New Zealand, before marrying and settling in the mountains of Colorado, in a small town called Salida.

In Colorado we starved and froze, started our own electronics business, and had a couple of sons, Dylan and Daniel. In 2005 we shut the business down and moved back to Tucson.

I am currently working on finishing The Devastation Wars fantasy series and attending graduate school.

The third book in the Lone Wolf series is as good as the first two - even though it has a slightly different feel to it...

As usual, the story begins with Ace in deep, I mean really deep, trouble - and then Coyote saves the day:) (Well, you just have to love that horse:))
And then thanks to his new companion, a real life figure of James P. Beckwourth, Ace has to face one ridiculous adventure after another, each one getting more absurd and hilarious... until the one when the mood suddenly shifts and all things stop being so funny... That's the biggest twist in Ace's adventures so far, and I really liked that as it was so unexpected. I can't give you details not to spoil anything but for a moment there I was genuinely scared that Ace would stop being the Ace I've learnt to love so much... But luckily soon everything gets back to normal and Ace and Coyote ride away into the horizon - in search of a new adventure, to be sure:)

Eric T. Knight is a great story-teller, imaginative, creative, fantastic at depicting the scenes in an almost cinematic way, but what I like best in Ace's books is the humour, the play on the genre and the implementation of real life characters and events into the story in a very intelligent way. The author seems to wink at us saying: I know you know what it really looked like but, hey, what the heck, let's play with it and see how we can make it funnier:) That's what makes me wait impatiently for the next book in the series every time I finish the last one:)

For a guy with Lone in his name, he sure seems to be around people a lot. The book starts out with Ace being well and truly hung. By the James gang no less. He is saved by his horse, Coyote. Coyote saves him more than once during the book, conclusively proving that he is smarter than most of the characters. With his winter wages stolen, Ace rides into town and gets a job as a body guard for the richest man in town, who already has several, but being 1/2 Apache is quite a novelty. He gets into a fight with a dude that is as big as a mountain. He wins but is beaten to a pulp and decides it is in his best interest to leave town. Enter Beckworth, a mountain man with many real and imagined talents. He convinces Ace that he knows someone, who knows someone, who knows where there is a ghost ship in the middle of the dessert. Yes there is some fantasy involved with this one. The ensuing adventures almost get him killed more than once. The real villain in the story, is the Apache Kid, who is able to frame Ace for murder. When Ace finally catches up to him, the Kid goes over a cliff and we are led to believe, he turned into a raven. Follow them on the adventure to find the ship. It doesn't appear very often

Ace is at it again. I am amazed with how much trouble Ace can find without even trying. This time he gets roped into searching for a lost treasure ship. And once again I laughed hysterically throughout the whole book. I love the twists and turns as Ace seems to find himself in situations from recorded history that are added to the story for fun. Plus other weird and wild situations that made me shake my head. Read this book (and the rest of the series) if you like clean western themed historical stories that make you laugh for hours.

Always an adventure

I loved the first book in this series and I'd have to say that each subsequent book has gotten better and better. Old West tall tales mixed with mysticism and peppered with historical figures and events. The author writes unique and believable characters that are a joy to get to know. Looking forward to more in the series.

A total rip snorter

Say what you will, I find the introduction of historical figures a hoot! And our author has to be a quick witted, pain-in-the-a** 'smartaleck' with a wicked sense of humor. I like it. I tend to be a bit of one myself!
Read more of the hilarious, insane adventures of Ace!

A grand adventure

The third in the Ace series doesn't disappoint. As in the first two installments, Eric weaves fact and fiction into a great tale. Ace definitely leads a charmed life and how can anyone not like Coyote!

Another Good One! Once again Ace is off on an amazing adventure through out the historic Southwest. Full of action, surprises, grand tales, mystic, tight spots, new & old friends, and (of course) Coyote. A very enjoyable read!

More of the same.

I enjoy the characters, I enjoy the storyline, except for the fact that the main character is a genius at one moment and a complete idiot the b ext.
