Deep in the Farthing Mountains, in what was British Columbia before the Rift, the Northbane shifters have carved out a refuge. Winfyre Ridge. Away from the horrors, wars, and darkness. A place to live free and prosper. To start over. If you can get there.
Reagan Grace fled from a city laid to waste. She’s trying to get what’s left of her family to that mountain haven by any means necessary. But after a thousand-mile trek, the last thing she expected was a chance encounter with a bored alpha shifter. One who claims her by a toss of the dice.
Luke “Swift” Swiftlore could smell the secrets on Reagan a mile away. Hell only knows what risk he’s taking in letting this pretty refugee in. Now he has to keep her close and see if he can get her to cop to what she is. Good thing he’s a creative bastard.
Only Reagan doesn’t know either, except that her strange gifts ensured her family’s survival. But something else does. Something that has her scent, has tracked her, and will tear Winfyre apart to find her.
The start of the book had me somewhat intrigued if not completely drawn in, as I was introduced to an Earth where the Rift – a cataclysmic event that occurred just over a year ago altered the DNA of many, destabilising society and creating a new world, in which people and families fight to survive and understand what they have become. At the start of the story we are introduced to Reagan Grace, who has developed some unknown powers of her own due to the Rift, and is racing to get her family through the wilderness to safety - Winfyre Ridge.
Winfyre Ridge is protected by shifters, a promised safe haven from the chaos, violence and dangers rampant everywhere else, and where Reagan comes face to face with one of the Alpha shifters of Winfyre Ridge - Luke “Swift” Swiftlore, who can sense Reagan is hiding something and so plans to keep a close, close eye on her. Here is where I expected to be powerfully drawn in but the book/story never reaches the energy I expected. The interactions between Reagan and Luke lacked a powerful spark and then when danger arrives the intensity wasn’t there for me.
A good premise, the story had a lot of potential, at some point I might read one more book in the series to see if things get better.
Too long. Seemed like there were only about 20 people living there. Author skimmed over difficult parts. They are living together for what seemed like half a year and they never connected. And even after they decided they were into each other, it still took a few more weeks for them to have sex. She's 27 and he's early 30s. What is this the 1950s? I felt like the story was spinning it's wheels a lot when the author could have been putting more thought into world building and character building.
World building was super simplistic and lame. I mean it's a dystopian cluster of towns in British Columbia somewhere but they somehow have showers and toilets and pay for stuff with money. And I got the feeling it could have been anywhere on any coast. Didn't feel like British Columbia at all.

The first quarter has weird formatting and it could do with a good editor or read through for typos and general flow since its very choppy in scene changes and general time frames of when things are happening at least in the first quarter of the book so it can be really hard to read but once you get through that the story is really enjoyable the characters are very real and well written the universe is awesome and feels like a very decent post apocalyptic sort of fantasy telling very fun and the action/drama is done for the sake of it like its very natural and not forced even the romance while a bit slow burn for a shifter novel feels right for the characters like anything faster would be wrong since the main couple have their trust issues to sort through. I will say i wish their was more backstory like i feel like i was dumped in the middle of a book or was reading the second book instead of the first like i dont need apocalypse beginning type deal but there should have at least been a flashback or opening scene of her meeting fallon so we had some idea of what was going on and what their goal was and then did a like 3 weeks later then started with reagan in the forest also if your not going to make it obvious reagan is a female then you should make her have a female only name and not one thats unisex at first i believe reagan was the guy until we met luke and it was very jarring. Also more development on what a claim is like im still unsure even with the breif explaination at the very end of the book... like if your going to it make it a mate bond or make it well known at the start that its a instant connection between them that just means they are important to eachother but not necessarily romantically. I feel like their should have been a basic intro to those sort of things or the general layout of the place in the first book or even a basic black and white map at the front of the book i feel like to be orientated in the landscape youd have to be familiar with the area and well everyone in the world reading this book sure as shit wouldnt be. However besides those easily fixable issues the book is great im continuing with the series and if you like fantasy shifter post apocalyptic kind of - some romance but not your usual shifter mate kind then id reccommend.
Really loved the story - and the writing was great - but it jumped around a lot - and left me feeling a bit "What the hell is happening?" a few times. But I'm already into the next one and I see the writing style is already more advanced.
I liked it and I liked the writing. The problem that caused the rating not to live up to full 4 stars is disjointedness of the story. It went too fast in some places, too slow in others and skipped all over the place in a few. Sometimes it felt like some chapters are missing and sometimes chapters dragged on, tethering or boring. The characters are nice. Even though I hated how vague author was on abilities or even kind. Ending should have given more answers and final confrontation should have been more. It was too quick, too easy, too vague, especially with introduction of new threat and presence of existing big ones. Romance was slow burn(just the way I like them), however it didn't portray the fullness of falling in love, it dragged a bit and then skipped over to intense relationship. Characters rarely talked about anything substantial and never revealed anything important. It was annoying for reader and felt like authors incapability to weave the story properly.
So, with all that said, it is better than most shifter romances. It is not as good as some gems I have come across, or should I say- not as polished. World building was interesting, pity it was not developed to what it could have been. But it is definitely among the better shifter stories available.
I do recommend it. It is nice enough, have enough shifting animals in action, have some smutty scenes and is easy to read.
What happens when everything you knew changes & the past becomes the new future? Old myths & legends are real again! Old powers reappear, the learning curve unforgiving & hope is barely surviving.
I didn't know what to expect but I really enjoyed this book. It's a touch heavy, with stuff constantly happening and lots of characters to keep track of. But all together an enjoyable read
Fantastic story of the start of a new civilization after the world is changed by. An unexpected disaster. Can the various factions work together or will humanity destroy everything?
This was a different kind of shifter story but it was so good. The characters were great. The world as they knew it was gone, everyone awoke with strange abilities. Some shifters and some with strange abilities.Grab a copy it's great.
The world is a new and the drift has changed DNA and shifters and others have come into new gifts. In this new world where shifters and others are making a new world with the Northbane alpha shifter
This is a whole new concept really unique and different the characters are likeable, the romance is there but not upfront enough. It's well written and our author has a good sense of adventure.
This was a really great book! Love the story line and the way the author keeps you so interested that you don't want to put down the book. Will definitely check out other books from this author.
This was a different outlook on a shifter community and its formation. It has a moral approach for the main characters up to a point. Rea was a strong woman right at the beginning. I would recommend this book. It was a very good fantasy about humanized shifters.
One day she was normal, then the Rift occurred, and normal was all kinds of shifters and other creatures. This story held my interest and was very entertaining. It was well written with interesting characters.
A beginning of a new world start. I loved the lore, something unique. There is danger, romance and adventure. Hero's building a lasting haven and home fire those lost and searching. I would love to see more of the different characters lives played out.
I had put off reading this book, now i wish i had read it sooner. thank goodness there's a book 2! there are a few odd sentences but they do not tale away from this intriguing mystery. its a new take on what it means for the world to be destroyed and rise from the ashes. Its myth and legends rising to create a new world and those who won't let go of the broken amd old ways
Unlike any shifter book I’ve read before and I can’t tell you I actually liked but was curious. Sadly this ending was wrapped up so fast I nearly missed what her actual powers are and to be honest I’m still left confused.
