· “If there is one thing you can count on in life, it’s change .” ·

I have so many feelings for this book that I’m not sure I’ll be able to express them all in the following lines! But, I will try! Last year, I read the first book in this series and I absolutely loved it! “Serenade” was like nothing I’ve read before in YA Contemporary fiction—sweet, dark, intense, cruel, and stereotype breaker.

But Nocturne…

Let’s just say, things are really starting to go in crescendo here. If you multiply Serenade ten times, you begin to get a grasp of Nocturne—twists, action, suspense, romance, twists, cowboys, twists, complications, new heroes, new heroines, and… oh, yeah, more twists.

After a bloody shooting, Kaya runs away to protect the two people she loves the most—Luke (♥) and Oliver (who she kinds of hate, too). That is how, throughout the pages of Nocturne, we get to witness an incredible character growth in Kaya. Like a phoenix bird, time and time again, Kaya turns to ashes only to reborn stronger, more fierceless and resolute than ever. Yet, somehow (against all fiction clichés), she manages to stay true to herself (and away from the kitchen, please!).

In an unforseen turn of events, Luke and Oliver find themselves working together to get Kaya back—the only interest they share. However, as days (fists and insults, too) go by, things start to change between these former rivals and what was once hatred starts to become admiration and loyalty.

Kaya, on the other side, finds new friends who are willing to help her when things get complicated, even if it means risking their lives for her. Even if she’s not willing to let that happen. But she also finds old friends, who turn out for her when she least expects it. In fact, she kinds of reminds me of Rapunzel, making friends in the most unexpected places:

I must say, I really enjoyed getting to know new characters, namely Thomas and Marlene. I loved them and a lot! They made me laugh, tense, cry and even blush a bit. But, what I loved the most about this book was a little something I like to call “A rediscovery of Oliver” (gasps). This, for me, was the best part of the whole book. I love, love, looooooove this Oliver.

Beautifully narrated through multiple (amazingly unique) points of views, Nocturne is a book full of tension, suspense, tenderness, evil, loyalty and love. It will have you on edge from the first line till the very last word!

As for me, I can’t wait for what’s to come in Rhapsody!

Kaya, free from her father, is not on her own. She has Luke and part of his crew. Hiding out in a random motel, they think they’re safe but it proves much harder to disappear then to run away. Kaya must leave behind those she loves to keep them safe and truly disappear. Or so she thinks.

Nocturne starts off with a bang – right where Serenade left off. Kaya is still with Luke and all the problems revealed in book one are pressing down on her. She doesn’t just want to be normal anymore. She can’t have the normal life. Not with both her parents trying to find her – and not necessarily alive.

Kaya really comes into her own with this book. She is still young and ignorant of the wide world, but she is learning. She grows so much throughout this book, accepting who she is and what she must do. She is part of a larger conspiracy between her parents. A lesser person would slink off and disappear into whatever normal life is left for her, but Kaya shines. She is stubborn to a fault, but she almost always does what’s right. Even when it puts her in danger. Especially when it puts her in danger, it would seem.

Everyone falls in love with Kaya and her do-what-she-believes-in attitude. She wears her heart on her sleeve, will dig in her heels when she needs to, and will do anything to protect those she loves. Kaya is the heroine everyone wants to be and the woman all the men fall in love with.

I couldn’t put this book down and I can’t wait for more of Kaya’s story.

Better than the first

Okay, I must say, this book is really good. I loved it even more than the first. The plot and subplots are very well put together, very well thought out and expressed in the story.

There was one consistent problem though. A lot of the contractions were used with an accent instead of an apostrophe. Also, some of the names used were not consistent with the character they were speaking of. For instance, when speaking of Sindra, Kaya uses the name “Rayna” instead. There were also some words missing throughout. Nothing big bough, just conjunctions.

Anyway, despite these errors, I am overlooking them and giving a 5 star rating because of how well developed the characters and the story is.

I must say that I love Kaya and have really grown to love Oliver and some of the others. The last book, I grew to love Regan, Lisa, and Luke the most and thought Oliver was a little over the top and creepy. Before, I was a little disappointed in Kaya, because she was a little wimpy, but I also knew why. Heather McKenzie did well letting us know the backstories and motivation for everyone without overdoing it and making it seem that the characters are liveing in he past. Heather McKenzie did well with the addition of new characters and the highlights from others’ points of view.

Well done and I can’t wait for the last book to come out! I read this one in little more than 6 hours because I couldn’t set it down!

Oh my god I literally finished this book in a day! Much better than SERENADE, although I still liked that one as well.

All the characters were a step up and I found I loved all of them this time around, especially Lisa and the newly nice Oliver.

But Thomas was the best all around! Sometimes wished he was the main love interest. Oh god I love that cowboy! Anyways…do yourself a favor and read this trilogy. Cannot wait to read the next one.

The plot was also a step up as well as the character work, and this was all in all a better book then the first one: a sequel done right. I didn’t want this book to end but wanted to know the ending badly even as I kept reading it.

And did I mention already how much I love Thomas?

(I’m sorry to say this review was written on my cell phone so if there are any errors in it that’s why. I usually write them on my laptop but don’t have that near me now. But same message as before: if you want a fantastic story, then read this damn trilogy!)

The Plot Thickens for Kaya

Be sure you have read Serenade before you read this sequel or you will be lost. This is a good book: more evil doers and pain, but also new friendships and hope. Kaya meets new friends and joins back up with old ones. I will be reading the next book because I want to know what happens next.

Read from March 13, 2018 to March 19, 2018.

I was thrilled when Heather reached out to me again to review an ARC edition of her latest novel in the Nightmusic Trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in her series, Serenade , and am thankful I have had the privilege of continuing to read and review the series.

Nocturne picks up right where it left off in Serenade so I would recommend starting with Serenade if you are interested in the series or you will not have a clue what is going on in Nocturne. If you have read Serenade then you are in for a treat as all of the best characters make a come back in this novel as well as few stellar new ones.

Kaya feels free. Finally. Well, as free as you can feel being away from an oppressive and murderous father who wants you dead to ensure he gets full control of his billion-dollar pharmaceutical company. But she has Luke and that is all she needs. Despite her good fortune with the help of her friends in her initial escape she is still being hunted and is constantly be on the run. She soon learns that she is being hunted by more than just her father which has brought a few unwanted people back into her life. This knowledge came with a violent scene in which Kaya tragically learns that if she truly wants to protect the ones she loves she must leave them. Kaya heart-wrenchingly lies to those close to her and then sets off on her own, something she has never been allowed to do before. She is picked up by a cowboy named Ben who invites her to work on his ranch for room and board. Kaya is gutted with the loss of Luke and tries her best to maintain herself but will she be able to stay hidden? Is this what her life is now going to be like? No longer a sheltered princess living in a castle, Kaya grows and learns about her own capabilities and is finally free to make her own decisions. Luke and the ones who love her are not so easily deterred from protecting her, and as the story climaxes, Kaya will be thankful for their persistence.

Nocturne definitely keeps the same intense pace as its predecessor! This is the kind of action that needs to be in more YA novels with female leads. The novel is exciting, action-packed and suspenseful. The story is constantly moving and changing, creating nail-biting anticipation as Kaya and her friends literally fight their way away from those wanting to harm her. The story does not shy away from gun violence, blood, gore or from the characters getting a little frisky! The characters emotional reactions are visceral and the scenes invoke fantastic imagery. It is also nice to see a plot set in Saskatchewan, Canada. While it isn't the most glamorous place, it is nice to see real rural Canadian settings in a YA book and I think that will speak to a lot of local readers.
Fun Fact:
Heather McKenzie decided to write a book because her own daughter wanted to read a story that did not have vampires, werewolves etc. but rather something set in real life.
As with a lot of YA novels, I struggled with the romance aspects of the plot and this book is sappier than Serenade. The massive love triangle was not as appealing to me as the extreme in which the characters cared and lusted for each other seemed like a stretch, but then again, I am not a teenager. I have not forgotten the fierceness I felt with my first love or how all-encompassing it felt so I think that the romance in this story would be very engaging for most teens. The other new characters in the story, like Thomas and Marlene, are fierce, smart and funny and are fantastic additions to the story.

There is one character and aspect of this story that I question and that is how the new character, Ben, was handled. Without spoiling the story, Ben makes some reprehensible choices under the guise that he was drunk and didn't mean it. Just because someone is drunk does mean that they are not in control or not responsible for their actions. Ben also had a track record of the behaviour. However, Ben is a complicated and dynamic character, which is not always seen in YA, and he really added some depth to the story. I don't think you're supposed to like Ben or even feel sorry for him and thankfully the other supporting characters reactions and fortitude make up for his failings. Some of the novel's focus is on Kaya's desire and her desirability, which, of course, every teen girl wants to feel! So as a teen reader these plot nuances are a way to build on that and for the reader to play into a fantasy of desirability, which is completely understandable. So perhaps I think I just need to turn my adult-brain off and just enjoy the story for what it is, and it is one that I actually really enjoyed.

In fact, I demolished it over the last few days and bemoaned when I had to put it down. I feel really lucky to be one of the first to get my hands on this book. If you are a teen, a lover of YA fiction, action and romance then you are going to love this book. It is a great follow-up to Serenade and I can't wait to see what the final book has in store for Kaya. Hopefully, we don't have to wait too long for the final addition in this series!

*I received an eARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

The first book in this trilogy, Serenade was a pretty awesome and engaging read. Compared to that, the 2nd book felt slightly bland and repetitive. But I have to say one thing, the covers of this trilogy are really unique and beautiful!

Kaya is still on the run from her father who is only after her fortune. After an incident, she truly understands that she poses a threat to anyone near her, so she decides to bail alone. But surrounded by enemies on all sides, will she be able to hide or will she be betrayed?

A lot of stuff happened in the first book, Kaya learned the truth about herself and why she was held captive by her father and why he is after her. She ends up getting kidnapped by Luke but along the way ends up falling for her captor. I felt this book was more of a kind of filler because other than the introduction of few new characters, this book only contained running and hiding and it was devoid of any interesting surprises. But seriously, Kaya definitely has the most shittest parents in the whole universe!

One of the things that surprised me was, I actually started liking Oliver. His actions disgusted me in book 1 but after knowing the real reason behind it, he slowly started warming up to me. But… but I felt Kaya’s character was a kind of irritating this book! And on top of that, Thomas. What even!! She miraculously gets rescued after bailing on Luke and ends on a farm where she manages to get a job there and ultimately one of the guys there fall for her. Why is that everybody end up falling in love with the main heroine? I would have rather enjoyed it more if it was a purely platonic relationship. It would definitely have been more meaningful.

On the other hand, one of the new characters Marlene was absolutely my favourite. Born with a hideous birthmark on her face, she mostly stays away from crowds but a beautiful bond develops between her and Kaya. I loved the fact that Kaya stood up for her on more than one occasion! But the most awesome thing about this book was the bromance between Luke and Oliver! I didn’t even guess that anything slightly normal was possible between these two because they were always at each other’s throats. This was definitely a delightful surprise.

Overall, Nocturn was an okay read. The plot felt a little repetitive and this book could have been a little less lengthy in my opinion. The action and stuff were there but I wanted more of it but nonetheless, I enjoyed those particular parts. But the way things ended, I am definitely interested to know what happens next to our characters!

Recommend it?

Yes.

I was a little worried when, like in the first book, this one started off slow. Wasn’t sure what was gonna go along with her life at this ranch. But then the story picked up and got interesting. And now she has like three love interest. Love the action packed ending.
