This was a fun read. It was nice seeing Victoria the Violin fairy and Shannon the Ocean fairy pop up who we’ve previously met in other Rainbow Magic adventures. I didn’t think I’d enjoy this one as it seemed a bit naff but it was really good and I liked the idea of a Mermicorn Festival. I also liked that the magical gems gave everyone the confidence to believe in themselves . You’d think Rachel and Kirsty would be better at spotting goblins by now but they aren’t. The transfiguration spell when Rachel and Kirsty turned into mice was really cool and I think that’s something new. 1 thing I wish there had been more of was the actual mermicorn itself but I still really enjoyed the story overall

My daughter, who is in college now, loved this series as a little girl. For fun, she gave this to me in a Christmas book exchange and I had never actually read any of them. I can see why she loved them with the detailed descriptions of outfits, hair styles, and glitter!

3.5 Stars!

This book was okay! A mermicorn genuinely sounds like either something I would’ve come up with as a kid, or my sleep paralysis demon (not that those don’t overlap all the time). Overall, this was a decent book with some funny elements and a good message for kids!

Let’s talk about Evelyn herself. Gotta say, not one of my favourite fairies. I’m obsessed with her design, it’s so 2014-2016 coded and something about just amuses me. (Honestly, I would probably wear this exact outfit.) Other than that, there’s not a lot to like.
My genuine reaction to Jack Frost coming for Topaz: OH MY GOD EVELYN DON’T JUST STAND THERE, GET THAT NET OFF OF HER!!!
I liked her icicle spell though! Not only did she probably break it off of one of the goblin’s houses, but it’s an interesting spell because it gives the girls a time limit to get the gem back since Evelyn’s spell will stop once the icicle melts. I also really liked that Rachel said it reminded her of Topaz’s horn when the spell made it sparkle.
She was just a very blah fairy.

“You see, the gems that she wears have the power to make everyone around them feel confident. Her blue gem gives you confidence in your own choices and ideas. Her pink gem gives you confidence to speak your mind, and helps you be brave enough to stand up for the things you believe in. And the green gem gives you the confidence to help others.”

Okay, I don’t entirely love the theme behind the gems. I completely understand the intent behind it, it’s all about confidence and believing in yourself, all of which is relevant and important. But I just think that the reasoning behind the gems all sounds too similar. I think each gem representing a key attribute or characteristic would’ve been a better idea than basing it all around confidence. Even the execution of it all boiled down to the lack of a gemstone making the fairies unsure of themselves and having a gemstone making the goblins over-confident, there was no clear distinction between the three gems other than their colours.

My favourite details!
-I love Rachel and Kirsty so much because literally who else would come up with the idea to paint inspiring pictures and messages on pebbles and spread them all over the beach for other people to find?
-Love the foreshadowing of Kirsty cross-stitching a mermaid and Rachel cross-stitching a unicorn.
-I personally think that the girls meeting Evelyn for the first time is one of the funniest interactions they’ve ever had with a fairy.
-I love it when the girls are invited to Fairyland just to have fun and not because there’s a crisis.
-So I understand that Mermicorn Island is a place where they all agreed only mermicorn magic should exist, but leaving all the wands in the palace when Jack Frost is always lurking is such a bad idea.
-I liked that bit about the Music Fairies playing music on driftwood instruments, because I was under the impression that they could only use their magical instruments to make music, so this is a fun little piece of lore.
-I love the idea of a little flea market on the beach, it sounds so fun!
-SHANNON MY BELOVED HOW ARE YOU?!
-Jack Frost back at it again with the dramatic entrances. This is definitely one of his smarter plans since he knew none of the fairies would be able to stop him, like, okay inspiration behind Taylor Swift’s Mastermind.
-Omg hi Victoria! (I’m so sorry they drew your hair like that in this book.)
-Kirsty felt like she was losing her confidence too like Shannon and Victoria, but then she saw Rachel was still by her side and she felt like herself again… I’m gonna cry.
-“We’d need to guard ourselves against Jack Frost.” - Girls, I’m so sorry, but the goblin makes a very valid point.
-The goblin giving the blue gem back to Topaz because she saved him was such a good scene, I love it when we get to see wholesome, almost nuanced sides to the goblins.
-I’m sorry, so now Jack Frost created a magic snowflake that if his goblins throw it at the fairies, it’ll turn into a net and send them to his dungeon?!
-The goblin with the pink gem standing on top of a box, saying whatever the hell he wants, is definitely the best scene from the book! (Please let him keep it long enough for him to talk shit about Jack Frost.)
=>“I’m not afraid to say that I like playing Guess That Goblin, even though some goblins think it’s a children’s game.”
=>“You’re all going to be sorry for laughing at me for saying the moon is made of green cheese.” - Oh precious, you know what, it is made of green cheese.
-The girls and Evelyn turning into mice to follow the goblin was honestly kinda cool - they look so cute, especially because you can still see Rachel’s little flower scrunchie.
-“We’ll be the strangest, most annoying mice he’s ever seen.” - I love when we get menace behaviour from them. (They literally pulled the goblin’s hat over his eyes!)
-Forget everything I said about Jack Frost being smart, he is such a fucking dumbass, who doesn’t do their research before committing acts of theft and violence?!
-What a fun twist on Shannon’s bubble spell! Evelyn’s magic is different from Shannon and the other ocean fairies, so of course her doing the spell will be different as well! I really like when there are limitations set for certain spells, and in this case, it prevents the girls from searching deep within the ocean and being forced to stay near the surface.
-Hi Pearl the Mermaid! Thank you for your help, please come back.

Borrowed from the library (ebook).

Overall, very fun :)

The map is *way* too small on mobile… (I’m reading this as an ebook)

Somehow, I don’t think Georgie Ripper is doing the internal illustrations anymore - Kirsty in particular looks… not good.

Adventure!

Mermicorn Festival! Very cool!

Yay! We’re finally seeing Fairies we’ve met previously pop up! (Music fairies, Shannon the Ocean Fairy…)

Definitely need to cont. re-reading/reading these chronologically. I feel like I’m missing out on so much! Just passing references, but still.

Goblin Grotto. Oooh cool! And they’ve been there before?

We can do transmutation/transfiguration now? Turned the girls (as fairies) into mice!

The more underwater adventures we get, the more I’m hardcore side-eyeing Thea the Thursday Fairy’s hand-wavy explanation of her breathing-underwater magic… it’s so different to the other examples we’ve seen! Not a themed thing, & not really explained!

You’d think after all this time Rachel, Kirsty & the fairies would be better at spotting Goblins. They are very distinctive.

Didn’t think they were still doing the hidden letters!

Hidden Word = CONFIDENCE

Daisy Meadows and her fairies are my childhood. I collected so many in my youth, knowing all the fairies and their importance, and sticking with the two special girls who go to be a part of the magic.
Years ago I had to give my beautiful collection away, now still part of my childhood school where little girls are picking their favourite fairies and playing pretend. It's fun to hear stories from my old teachers telling me how over the years so many students have grabbed these books and fallen in love with the tales of two girls, Jack Frost and the fabulous glittering magic that is the fairies.
On Christmas last year, my sister surprised me with a boxset of these books, but cause you cannot collect these darlings as easily anymore. I was over the moon!
If anyone has a little one who needs a little magic in their life, wants to read and needs a big creation to be hooked on...it is Daisy Meadows!

I read this book to my daughter. It is one of the better Rainbow Fairies books. It doesn't follow the normal trend of the series possibly because it's a stand alone novel. This time the setting for the book is somewhere in Fairyland rather than the human world where most of the books are set. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Rainbow Fairies.

My 7yo loves these books, but honestly reading them aloud makes my eyes bleed 😅 10/10 recommend letting kids read them on their own. They are repetitive and simplistic. Kids are smarter than some give them credit for and they can handle more robust vocabulary and more interesting storylines, even if it involves fairies and mermicorns

Evelyn the Mermicorn Fairy's special magic gives people the confidence to believe in themselves. But when Jack Frost kidnaps her magical mermicorn, everyone starts to doubt their inner strength! Can Kirsty and Rachel stop him and save the day

Evelyn (6) says "do you know Evelyn is my name and I like mermaids and merimicorns too as well, and rainbows too".

Alice (3) says "I love Topaz, the one what is Evelyns unicorn. That's enough as I'm going to bed"
