Not On My Watch: How to Win the Fight for Family, Faith and Freedom

Rate this book
News headlines point to a world that has gone stark-raving mad. Right is wrong, and wrong is right. Religious liberty is under attack. Gender identity and fluidity is not only accepted but encouraged. Same-sex marriage is embraced by many churches. Deviant sexual practices are taught in schools. Feminists march for freedom—except when it relates to the 60 million babies aborted since Roe v. Wade. “No more!” cries Elizabeth Johnston aka the Activist Mommy, social media sensation with over 70 million video views. Johnston courageously defends the timeless truths of God’s Word and inspires and encourages other Christians to unite in winning this war for our children, our morals, our freedom, and our culture.

“Read this book, devour every sentence, and then share it. . . . This is the kind of book that can rock the culture to its very foundation.”
—Todd Starnes, Fox News Channel

“Elizabeth’s uncompromising commitment to speak truth and stand for righteousness . . . has elevated her to prominence at a time when our nation needs ‘mama bears’ the most!”
—David and Jason Benham, best-selling authors

“Elizabeth Johnston brings much needed ‘mommy sense’ to a world saturated with nonsense.”
—Kimberly Fletcher, Moms for America, Inc.

“Not on My Watch captures the passion and calling of Elizabeth Johnston and everyone who values faith, family, and freedom.”
—Mathew Staver, Liberty Counsel

I'm increasingly saddened by the discourse of hatred that seems to be pervading our society. Neighbours are so divided over personal beliefs that instead of trying to understand the perspective of others, they spew hateful words and turn their backs on each other.

I want so badly to understand where and how things went so wrong to land us where we are now. I chose to read this book knowing that it was authored by a woman with a very different perspective and set of opinions and values from my own because I hoped that reading her words would help me to understand and learn.

Unfortunately, this book does not shed any light on how we might move back toward a place of unity. This book is little more than a call for more hatred, an encouragement to fight more, and a refusal to even consider the idea of withholding judgement against anyone who does not line up with her very narrow ideas of what Christianity means. This book just made me much sadder, and I really feel sorry for a woman who believes that her God wants her to be so hateful and prideful.

Although this book was less than useful for my purposes, it did provide me with an unintended lesson on how alternative facts are born. The opening chapters of the book at least attempt to provide some citations for the facts and opinions she shares. But by the midpoint of the book, the author gave up on references altogether, simply shoving uncited facts and statistics in all over the place. I'm not sure that the lack of references is a wholly bad thing (for her), since the references I checked at the beginning of the book actually disprove the theories she was promoting once you dig down to the full source material (something the author clearly did not do).

My suspicions that things might not be quite right started with her claim that
"...overpopulation is a myth. The truth is that every family on this planet could have a piece of land about the size of Texas."
Well huh. That's a real humdinger of a claim. I don't really have a pony in the overpopulation race, but that sure sounded incredible to me and boy-howdy wouldn't I love to have a piece of land that size! Her next line *does* soften that claim by saying that even a more conservative approach would leave every person on earth with at least an acre or two.

Following her citation -- a link to a question answered on quora.com that somewhat supports her claim -- I then went further by following the sources used to answer the question and learned that it's actually true!

According to an article published by a fellow at The School of Biological Sciences, UT Austin*, each person *could* have a piece of land that is about 2.3 acres. But not if that person wants to live a typical North American lifestyle (you know, with roads, utilities, consumer goods, varied diets -- all that fun stuff). For that you would need 23 acres per person -- a number that would require 9 more planet Earths to support current population levels.

I do hope that this book had a thorough editing before it went to press, but I suspect there will have been little or no fact-checking done since doing so would require the author to rewrite several rather large sections of this book. It's a real shame because this author has a faithful following, and I would have loved to have seen some truth to her claims. Unfortunately, she does not provide anything beyond her say-so that things are true.

I leave you with this my friends: if you have not already done so, please vote. Please vote with your eyes open (don't believe everything you read and hear on first glance -- do your own research) and vote with your heart. We may not agree on politics, all of us, but make sure your voice is heard.

Thank you to NetGalley and Worthy Publishing for providing me with a DRC of this book.

*Some of the research cited within that article was actually much more fascinating than I ever thought reading about ecological footprints could be! If that kind of thing is up your alley, this article is not a bad jumping off point to dive down a rabbit hole of research!

I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

While the official summary of the book is succinct and clear, I did not find the actual book to be so which makes this review hard.

She begins with a whole chapter about her love of Kim Davis, a woman jailed for violating court orders to resume issuing marriage licenses in line with the American Constitution, and it kind of goes down hill from there. She actually very rarely gives specific advice on how to win debates or advance political agendas, the bulk of the book is dedicated to summarizing her "accomplishments". This translate significantly to talking about the number of views her videos get, citing favorable article titles written about her and comments from her Facebook page that praise her. There is literally an ENTIRE chapter that is just a series of emails exchanged between her and a person she supposedly converted to heterosexuality through email. (This book is littered with anecdotes that strain credulity, but none more so than this and when she said she got a grocery store manager to tear up six copies of Teen Vogue on the spot).

Even if you really want to understand where she is coming from (a benefit she never offers me, as a person she frequently describes in her book as a evil satanic mind raper of children) you have to deeply rely on imagination because her writing is so shallow. There is very little of her in this book (despite its premise, and her fame, allegedly being built on a cult of personality). Just like so much of her book is directly copied from her Facebook page, her email and favorable articles even her most “personal” opinions feel just as copied.

It wasn't until I got to the tenth and penultimate chapter of her book that this writing style began to make sense to me. The only meaningful advice she has to give is to be like her: be angry and be uncompromising in your extremism.

And it is the hints into the depths of her extremism, easily missed in her short Facebook posts but on full display as she struggles to fill the pages of a book, that are the most gripping and concerning. From the beginning of the book she makes the truly radical argument that the Constitution largely does not apply to the states, that no part of the Bill of Rights is incorporated against the states and that the right of judicial review does not exist. To her this justifies arguing that Muslims should be barred from public service on the basis of their religion, that public schools should teach Christianity (using the Bible as a textbook natch) and that Islam is evil using taxpayer money, that the editors of Teen Vogue should be arrested and jailed on obscenity charges, that the staff of Planned Parenthood should be arrested and imprisoned on murder charges, and that it should be illegal to have anal or oral sex with another adult (of any gender) in your own home. Oh, and at one point (after arguing how feminists actually demean women) she tells her female readers that "our wombs are weapons".

I wish these were exaggerations.

I think this book fails to achieve its stated purpose, to arm conservatives with the tools, techniques and resources they need to win the culture war, because of its shallow and unstructured writing (the only author she reminds me of Sylvia Browne tbh). I think it is only useful in revealing the mindset and goals (literal christian supremacy and theocracy) of some right wing activists.

I honestly can't think of anyone I could recommend this book to because its clear from her Facebook page that even her most ardent supporters don't even read the short articles she writes. Even if this stuff is 100% your jam, there has to be people who do it better.

I was not going to write a review of this book because I thought the title spoke for itself. Elizabeth Johnston of “Activist Mommy” fame has only spoken truth to power in a civilization that is looking more like the Caligula days (Penthouse version) than the culmination of 2000 years of Christian evolution. The book is an excellent reiteration and expansion of her very entertaining Facebook videos that millions of us have enjoyed. But then I read a high school assignment (I desperately hope it was not university level) review that basically said this book was hurtful because the opinion WAS Christian.
How did the world get this way? Could it be because old white men like me are too timid or lazy to fight for the values that we were taught sixty years ago. Did God really die in us because of our too comfortable existence? No, I must give my opinion of this book to set the record straight. I hope then many others who need this wake-up call will join this movement to restore decency to our world.
This “momma grizzly” with ten home schooled children is fighting for a Christian environment for her progeny to inherit. But her battles and tactics radiate the Christian love that the left fears so much. The snowflake crowd and the "Social Justice Warrior" are plugging their ears and screaming "Nah, Nah, Nah". The truths exposed are painful. It is almost as hard to give up a lie you believe in as it is to give up a sin that pleasures your body. The sad spectacle of the thoroughly conditioned feminist fighting so hard for her debauched principles is one small example of the immolation of our civilization.
This book shows an excellent example of one way to fight the evil that walks the world today. Two thousand years of following Jesus had brought the world freedom and prosperity that the author is working so hard to restore. The Church has the major role in restoring morality to the world today. This feisty mother has the faith and the stamina needed to lead a powerful thrust against the pornographic, the self harm, and the childish hedonism that is destroying the soul of modern civilization. I know that history has proven that her campaign style has great effect on society. After all, who can show true morality better than a mother fighting for a cleaner world for the children?
But personally, I wish to follow a more political route. I will continue my fight against the International Socialist forces, the Ultra Rich George Soros Green Cultists, the Malthusian death cult and all the other direct attacks on our democracy. My tactics come from the same Christian perspective, but the war that I must go to fight is a war that needs stronger actions. The mothers and church groups are needed on the home front, but my battles need more firepower. The Social Marxist totalitarian Utopia has ascended to the majority power position. They have infiltrated our governments, our universities, our work environment, the mainstream media and our schools. The feminist, Nazi, socialist ideology has poisoned generations. Authors like Jordan B Peterson (12 Rules for Life), Bob Plamondon (The Truth About Trudeau (Pierre)), Jose Ortega y Gasset (Revolt of the Masses) and C. Wright Mills (The power Elite) all give more ammunition and exposure to the war for freedom that we fight.
Not On My Watch is a great entry level call to action for those just waking up to this moral threat to change civilization. I totally support her endeavors and all who join her crusade. However, we must also fight this existential war at a much higher level. For those with the strength, your courage is needed on the front lines fighting the ideology at the roots. Start with the books I have suggested and you will find the whole world is losing the war for democratic freedom. Don’t be lulled into complacency as you struggle to main your life style, look past the mainstream media propaganda machine. Not On My Watch explores the tip of the iceberg that is about to rip our civilization to shreds and send us into the long dark night. Read it to open your eyes and then move on.

Ms. Johnston should invest in a copy editor. The grammatical structure (or rather lack of it) made a lot of the book unintelligible. I think Ms. Johnston should also consider taking a few non-fiction writing classes.

Embarrassing and sad. Straight up hate speech, and not even an interesting, intelligent or original take.
Self-indulgent, self-serving and breathtakingly ignorant.
The incoherent ramblings of someone who has completely lost sight of rationality and reasoning.
How she even got someone to agree to publishing this hot mess, I do not know.

Great quick read by social media’s “Activist Mommy” to motivate Christians to stand up against the left’s attacks on good morals and family values. She is a great example of a mom who loves her 10 children enough to fight hard “to restore the crumbling pillars of morality in the culture” (p. 166) and “to fight the normalization and acceptance of evil” (p. 179)

“Studies have been done on what makes people a success in the face of odds and resistance. They’ve proven that the greatest factor in the success of individuals was not their natural talent, their education, or money. It was grit!” -p. 111

“It seemed to be lost on the leftists that a boycott is a form of free speech whereby people express their beliefs by the way they spend their money. It’s called free enterprise and is a great American ideal.” -p. 137

Speaking of modern day “bread” (government welfare) and “circuses” (entertainment/tv/phones): “Bread and circuses represent the failure of the thoroughly entertained and well-fed Roman citizens to defend the liberties of the Roman Republic. Rome went from freedom and democracy...to a massive tyrannical central government…And that is right where we are headed in America...
Like bait on the mousetrap, bread and circuses are distractions that are necessary for the government’s violent clampdown on freedom. And it is fast approaching.” -pp. 147, 150

“The push for big government, the sexualization of our children, the erosion of parental rights, and the weakened family unit is not accidental or even a natural progression of living in an enlightened society. It is an intentional Marxist takeover...It is easy to see how the USA is walking in the footsteps of Rome during her decline before her collapse. The path we travel is one intentionally and methodically paved by the cultural Marxists aiming for the decline of our republic.” -pp. 151, 161

“Planned Parenthood calls their coveted annual award the Margaret Sanger Award… Her admiration for Hitler, her endorsement of eugenics, and her racism haven’t dissuaded Planned Parenthood in the slightest from publicly venerating her year after year.” -p. 62

“Here are three proofs that feminists are not true women’s advocates:
Feminists do not advocate for the lives of preborn women…
Feminists do not advocate for the rights of oppressed Muslim women…
Feminists typically align with the transgender ideology, which pioneers the erasure of women in the culture...
“Feminism is a movement created to justify the immoral behaviors of women. Feminists don’t truly care about vulnerable women. What feminism fights for has brought and will continue to bring more suffering and enslavement to women than the most egregious male misogynist in history...The truth is that feminists have equal rights in America and no longer have any reason to be ‘marching.’ But, the march must go on, so they create a nonexistent injustice to achieve victim status. Never in the history of the world have women had greater freedom than in the United States right now… The feminist movement has worked so hard to erase all distinctions between the sexes that the culture no longer treasures women for the unique contributions only they can bring to society.” -pp. 62-4

Very Good! I had not heard of the "Activist Mommy" prior to coming across her book. I am glad to have read this one. The author provides a conservative Christian perspective on issues that include: social Marxism, transgender bathroom directives, and abortion. Her activism has taken the form of sit-ins, protest events, counseling, and burning a Teen Vogue magazine in an effigy video that went viral.

The author describes experiences with social media bullying, censorship, and how she landed in Facebook jail. She remembers how a troll sent "a rejection letter from Jesus" for her views. She makes good points about social media censorship of opposing viewpoints. Interestingly enough, recent U.S. congressional hearings allege collusion between Big Tech media companies and federal law enforcement agencies to censor the online voices of some Americans to create a political driven echo chamber.

The book's language style is not mean or hateful, it's just firm in her religious beliefs. Although, she does take a couple of digs here and there. It has good writing, humor, and references to biblical scripture. I will point out one critique in that the author does a bit of romanticism of early American History and the founding fathers. We must remember sin and hypocrisy existed then as well in the full context of the time period.

I appreciate reading political works be it left, right, or center of the aisle. This book proved to be a good addition to that diverse political perspective. A very good read!

🌷Book Quotes:

"Some men are too prideful or intimidated to recognize a call on a woman's life, but not you."

"The edict implicitly threatened that schools that didn't obey King Obama's radical social agenda would then lose federal funding and risk becoming the subjects of lawsuits."

"One of the most powerful things we did was threaten to sue the schools for pandering obscenity to minors."

'I made fun of their objectifying vagina costumes and their double standard of intolerance for diverse views."

Two quotes came to mind as I read this book..... (one of them mentioned in the book)

“In times of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act”.
- George Orwell

“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are stiffened.”

– Billy Graham

This isn't a perfect book but it's an excellent example of a woman who speaks up unashamedly for the truth. The truth of God's word, the truth correlating to common sense, the truth that we should stand guard against an ever encroaching left that wants the hearts and minds of our children, and the truth of our American heritage. I'm inspired by her fervor to want to fight for those truths on behalf of our children. Even in the face of fierce, hate filled, often lying opposition. Oh that we would stand up for what's right, rather than be timid and fear the opinions of man. The world will declare themselves to be on the right side of history and we should declare our desire to be on the right side of God's truth.

To paraphrase and add onto a point the author makes.......I wish we loved righteousness and Godliness as much as the left loves ungodliness. She's exactly right, the left is unashamed and proudly bold for what they believe in. To the detriment our own culture. Yet we often are to worried about appearing nice as opposed to boldly speaking up for the truth and the preservation of our culture and heritage.

I'd recommend this book especially for people who sense our culture is heading in the wrong direction but don't really know where to start and how to react. This is a great starting point and example that maybe we should all be a little bolder, more aware, and unashamed to tell the truth.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this book. I saw it at Ollies and thought, "Sounds interesting, but probably just more fluff from yet another social media ranter." I'm glad to say I was wrong. Johnston's take-no-prisoners approach combined with informed insight provides much fuel for thought. It's hard to not be impressed with all she accomplishes as wife, mother of 10, and sought-after activist/speaker/blogger. If the dictionary still made sense, her picture would be beside the entry for "Momma Bear". At times, the content is hard to take, but that is precisely what we need. The book is well worth the short read time.

Fiery rebuke of the perversions pushed by the Left

This was the first that I’ve heard of the Activist Mommy and I could not put the book down. What a firebrand! She stands firm on her faith and the Word of God and the Bible. She shows how today’s culture which accepts homosexuality, transgender, abortion and sexual perversion is leading the decay of Western society. The book is a call to action for all believers to stand up and be counted among the righteous and to fight back against the wave of Leftist cultural marxism. What an inspiring read!

This was a timely kick in the pants!
Christians.. No more resting on our laurels and just allowing the secular culture to take over in the name of “waiting for Jesus to come back”! Get on the front lines and stand for what’s right. Passive resistance isn’t working anymore. Don’t worry so much about offending someone. Be kind and loving but realize that someone is always offended by something. It’s time to take our country back and get back on the right track! Mama bears, rise up!

I love Elizabeth and everything she stands for. I own a copy of this book and have yet to finish it but it is very well written from a beautiful soul that is fighting for the freedom of our children and grandchildrens generations. When I became radically born again around ten years ago I thought that everyone in my church at the time, especially pastors and teachers, would be like Elizabeth. Unfortunately they are asleep and concerned with wordly things. Read this book and please wake up.

A simple, yet profound read that reminds us that one person CAN make a difference. Every parent, and every Christian needs to read this book ,then get off their collective butts and DO SOMETHING to stop the madness that has overtaken our country, our schools, and our churches. Stand up and speak out...United we stand, divided we fall.

Elizabeth Nails It!
A must read for ALL mom's! Elizabeth tells it like it is and calls us to action. We can not sit by and let our kids be told lies about who they are or who they should be and we must use the Bible as a sword to fight the evil that is happening, it's not simply just going to go away.

What a Powerhouse! Elizabeth Johnston is a fighter to the core! If you want to be motivated and inspired regarding the protection of your children and children's rights, you've got to read this book! A Christian, a Mother, a Wife and a Superstar! That's a big job. But don't worry, she's got it handled. And you can, too!
