I had high hopes for this book because I love reading about Asian skincare but while quick and enjoyable, I had difficulty taking it seriously because of a few reasons.
Firstly, the book kept "recommending" products from two brands at the end of each chapter: Klairs and A.by BOM. Not sure if it's a paid endorsement or if MiiN is pushing its own partners, but it sure felt like it. Even though there's nothing wrong with sponsored content, I felt like this devalued the book's credibility, as much as I like and trust those two brands.
I didn't think much of this until the sleeping mask chapter, where there was no mention of Laneige's famed water sleeping mask. By then, I started to doubt this book's credibility.
Secondly, there was one paragraph in a particular chapter that said: "Natural facials are much more than a passing fashion. They are based on Korean philosophy and lifestyle." I'm sorry but as we all know, South Korea has the highest rate of plastic surgery (this little tidbit was also listed as a fact at the end of the book), so to shout about being all natural and link it to "Korean lifestyle" is contradictory.
even though this book is a decent introduction to korean skincare, i was expecting much more from it. it covers topics in a very vague way so for those who already have the minimum knowledge about korean skincare, you will find this book rather repetitive. as for the pr, it is insane the amount of promotion there was in this book. the recommendations did not feel genuine whatsoever as most of them were from the same brand and whatnot.
they glorify korean skincare and overconsumption forgetting that the most important part about healthy and youthful skin is the diet that is behind it. even though korean skincare is proven to work effectively, and i am a fan of it myself, it is important to mention that our personal lifestyle also has an impact on our skin wether we like it or not.
the whole book was rather, this amazing toner, this perfect lotion, this and that all the time. not only i felt as if i was reading a drugstore magazine but also, despite it being a quick read, it took me ages to finish because of how basic and repetitive it was.
if you truly don’t know ANYTHING about korean skincare, you could give it a try, otherwise you’re better off without reading this book
Le doy 5 estrellas porque I'm biased like that.
This book is not for beginners. It often makes pseudo-scientific claims that are problematic, if not outright dangerous for beginners. And they are clearly being paid to advertise some brands and cafes which is just so sketchy. I liked some of the historical background the mentioned and the fact that they went into the natural ingredients used in K-beauty and why. Only read if you already have a more than rudimentary understanding of skin-care
Incredibly informative but not overwhelming. I really appreciated the forgiving voice of the authors who understood that those reading the book (aka me) may not have the best skincare regime at the moment but that I could adopt one. They also addressed that a Korean skincare regime can seem overwhelming at first and provided options for different scenarios to slowly get you into a routine.
I was hoping I could find it in English because I don't really like reading in Spanish but whatever. I loved this book so much!
First things first, as a "guide" to Korean Beauty, it did a FANTASTIC job explaining almost all the aspects needed to get started. Not only what purpose each product serves but also things such as... - the skin types (and what is best for each) - full routines (simple and complete) and additional information - Make-up in Korea - Interviews with directors of big companies - Routines for men - A bit of history and guide if you go to S.K.
Also, did I mention how nice the cover is? I absolutely love the matte-satin like finish and the fact that it's a hardback and only costs 17 euros is a steal~! The design inside the book is also very eye-pleasing. Great job!
Beautiful book about beauty.
I really enjoyed this book. For awhile now (and by "awhile" I mean a decade) I've been wanting to get into a good skincare routine. I used to be "that girl". Like, you know, that girl who never takes her makeup off before bed and washes it off with some body BAR SOAP (seriously I'm talking like Irish Spring here) and a washcloth in the shower. I was raised by my dad who is a single man and has been a single man since my parents divorced when I was 8 and I was 8 damn near 30 years ago, SO, I don't know what else to tell you about that.
What I do know? Thanks to this book (ok plus the internet) I've become a skincare junkie and now I get to have fun teaching my 13 year old daughter something I wish I'd had a mother or a mother figure around at that time to teach me. I started reading it 6 months ago and it's taught me so much more than I thought it would. There's a lot going on with our skin that I had no clue about and this book explains a lot of it. Then it takes you through every step in a skincare routine. Literally, every step and there's quite a few since a lot of them aren't done every single day (examples: exfoliation, masks and other various treatments) but it also thoroughly covers the steps that are done every single day as well (as I'm sure you all know: cleansing, toning and moisturizing). I know technically non fiction books can't have spoilers but honestly there's so much cool stuff and steps in this book that I don't want to ruin for you all (and besides that I'm too lazy to type it all out anyway). I just know if you're like me and want to get started on a routine before it's "too late" but you know jack sh*t about skincare products AND you want healthy, radiant skin that's softer than it's ever been in your life as well, this book truly *is* like a Bible.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I did get a bit confused and had to keep referencing the book for a few things like:
Does toner need to be reapplied after a wash off mask?
And,
The difference between chemical and physical/mechanical.... Or is is chemical/mechanical and (see?) physical exfoliation?
You know what? That probably has way more to do with my ADHD brain than the book but since many, many of us do have ADHD or not the best memory maybe it could have been explained more and in more detail. I'm also a very visual person so if it had a few illustrations thrown in here and there I would have given it 5 stars. That's still saying a lot though as I rarely give anything a full 5 star review because to me that's basically stating perfection.
Conclusion? I highly recommend it and I truly have been telling all my friends about it. Great little book and also, it's really cute looking! 💞
This was given to me as a present and I've really enjoyed it. It's not a book I would choose to read myself since I get this sort of information from websites. However, it was a fun read and I definitely learnt some stuff - it tallies with a lot fo the products that are coming out at the moment with certain chemicals (squalane and Niaciniamicide sp?) as well as recommending types of products and not necessarily brands (it does do this but frankly easy enough to skip). I thought it was an easy entry in beauty regimens and I especially liked that it really rammed the message home to always wear an SPF on your face (I do- spf 25 everyday and more if I'm in sunnier climes - hope you do too). I also liked how it outlined each step of the routine, that was useful am now researching the double cleansing routine which I can definitely see being helpful after a long flight OR commuting into London.
2 stars not for the content per se, which is mostly good, but because this is one of those books that really could have been a blog post. The information is presented clearly and with charm, and I liked the little extra asides about Korean culture and visit recommendations; it’s impossible not to notice things starting to be strung out and/or repeated after about the halfway point, though. A cute and certainly helpful read all the same.
It was very informative, which I really liked. The only problem is that I wish they had more of a routine for beginners, as the routines seemed like a lot of steps morning and night. But still a pretty okay book.
Very outdated, with very little useful information
I was really looking forward to reading this book, as I thought I would learn something new. But I literally learned nothing new. So many disappointments with this book, where to begin?
1. The products mentioned are all really outdated as of 2025, most impossible to find.
2. The products all come from the same brands, which conviently the writers of this book sold. It's like one big book, trying to sell you on things to buy from you. It's a bit insulting to the reader tbh.
3. All the information in this book...you probably already know if you know anything about skincare. And if you know nothing, you'd learn much more for free on youtube or online. There's much, much better info out there, trust me.
4. The over-consumption this book pushes is a bit much, even for me, as someone that loves skincare and uses several products, in my routines. This is pushing lots of products that you simply don't need. They don't even make a good case on why you would need so many products. If you follow this advice you can really do more harm than good in the long run.
Just save your precious money and time and walk past this book, there's much better.
