When seventeen-year-old Mol is caught committing a crime, she kicks and screams her way into a dull existence of servitude in the Authority, the suffocating patriarchal regime that oversees The Network of Islands. Her penance makes her restless, and she soon finds an outlet to direct her attention — the young Commander who is at the root of her unhappiness.

Mol, born and raised on Island Seven, has endured suffering and torment. After the deaths of her parents, she and her brother, Luca, manage to make the rations the Authority provides stretch, but it is difficult. Mol takes some initiative and sells what she can in exchange for food, coffee, and the bare essentials. On a dangerous mission to sell her mother’s beautiful necklace, Mol gets captured and thrown aboard a ship where the leaders of the Authority live. Mol gets thrust into the role of the Elite, beautiful women serving the Commander and his staff. Mol hates being a servant and yearns to escape. A chance encounter with the Commander himself offers Mol the opportunity to have her voice heard. The mutual attraction is immediate but is it real or just another illusion? There’s so much at stake and if Mol can keep her temper in check long enough, she might just change the mind of the Commander in how the Authority operates.
New Wave is an intoxicating dystopian gem that took me completely by surprise. I’m not a huge dystopian fan. I read Hunger Games and Divergent series when they first came out but soon lost interest as the market got saturated with copycats. But the New Wave premise intrigued me. Mol is an action/adventure feminist who kicks butt. She doesn’t tolerate abuse of women and speaks her mind. I loved how she protected the one woman who hated her guts on the ship from a beat-down by the unscrupulous General. I loved her tenacity for the truth, even if it meant losing the one man who she has feelings for. The hierarchy of the Authority screamed Hunger Games but with a difference: humanity. The Punisher was a complete paradox that caused me to read faster. The ending was explosive with plenty of action. By the time I got to the end, I wanted to read book two (coming soon). If you’re a fan of dystopian, you’ll love New Wave. Highly recommend!
Gifted Advanced Copy/ARC | Imagine living in a world of extreme poverty and famine, while those in power thrive just like the Capital of The Hunger Games. Society is divided into sectors laid out across islands (the Galapagos Islands), with each territory having a socialist purpose. Yet, no one is happy; people are being tortured and dying, and many resort to illegal activities to survive.
Mol is no different, caught in a world she loves but equally despises. Her entire life is about to change as she attempts to hawk her dead mother’s necklace for money to buy food. Captured, she becomes a key player in a revolution while falling for the man who helped create the world that imprisons her.
Sound like Bel Canto? New Wave by Jennifer Ann Shore is a brand new YA feminist fiction and dystopian novel about distrusting romance that questions whether love can change all. Or, is love a trick of the mind when dire circumstances transform a ragged and unsure girl into a princess warrior?
I envision Mol as a Smithie (my alma). Beautiful and aware, we watch as Mol builds relationships, falters, and learns how to fight like a warrior with her words and weapons. Fearless, she leads an army for the greater cause, even taking a bullet. She is strong and kickass, but also flawed and working on herself.
This is an uplifting story of courage that deeply resonates with all that we need to fix in modern-day society.
Thank you to the author for a free advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
It was so refreshing to see a female protagonist in an action and adventure story like this — to the point where I actually found myself surprised by some of Mol’s words and actions at first. As I continued reading, I realized that the parts I found jarring in the beginning would honestly probably be considered pretty standard behavior for a male character in a similar role. Once I identified this as the root of my hesitation, I quickly got on her team and let the story take me where it would. I found myself rooting not only for Mol, but also for the people close to her — Julian, Luca, and even some of the guards. Shore’s writing really shines in scenes where she’s developing relationships between her characters. Some aspects of the book recall a familiar premise, but Shore makes it her own with engaging dialogue, vivid descriptions, and realistic characters I truly cared about. Looking forward to jumping back in with Book Two!
What a page turner! New Wave is the perfect combination of adventure and romance. Featuring a strong female lead, the main character Mol is an inspiration to young women who march to the beat of their own drums. I'm very curious to see what happens in book II of this series since you're left on a cliffhanger in the end. Who else has a major crush on the Commander?
Jennifer Ann Shore writes with great imagery that enables readers to visualize the characters and scenes making it a fully immersible experience. Also, have to make a note of the book design! The cover really sets the mood of the novel and its matte finish is super soft to hold.
I really enjoyed this book. Creatively inventive, "New Wave" is a great book for fans of alternative dystopian, science fiction, action, drama and romance. A solid plot structure. Mol's universe is rich and detailed. She is a fascinating protagonist, She is strong and confident with both her wits and her combat skills and seeing the events of the novel unfold through her perspective is a treat and I found myself craving to know more about this world. I told my sister at first instinct that this book is giving me the vibes of The Hunger Games and Divergent series. I was also captivated by the characters, from the enigmatic Commander to the villainous General, they are complex and interesting.
I can't wait for the next book, because there are things which left me wondering about a lot things. Mostly about her parents’ connection of her parents and the contents of that box, about Hope, she seems secretive to me and most of all the triangle developing with that new doctor.
Jennifer did a great job. I spent a good deal of time trying to piece together motives and connections and, like any good novel in a series, was left wanting to read the next one.
This book had my attention right from the first words of prologue. It spoke of a battle unfolding in the background. The mystery that ensued was quite overwhelming and so I couldn't keep myself from turning the pages. And when I did, oh my!
I am so so glad I could get acquainted with this brave new story which otherwise might as well have stayed hidden from me forever. The story is set on a different kind of world where there are seven islands (at least that's what the people involved are aware of) governed by a powerful institution called the Authority. ... I received the novel "New Wave" by Jennifer Ann Shore as a free .mobi file in exchange for an honest review. I will first say that I went into this novel a bit warily, as it's a young adult novel with dystopian themes, and I'm not typically a fan of that sort of thing--but I'm pleased to say that "New Wave" was thoroughly entertaining, with an action-filled plot that carried me through the surf of the book.

If you're a fan of young adult dystopian fiction with strong female leads, then "New Wave" should certainly be added to your summer reading list--especially if you're vacationing on an island somewhere this season! Ms. Shore, thank you for the opportunity to review your work. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future!
Now I’m not usually a person who reads dystopian novels though if you look for it, you may find a couple of reviewed books in my profile. This book sounded super interesting and since I’ve read this author’s writing style before, I already knew it would be wonderfully written. There is a romance aspect to it but it in no way takes over the book. To be honest, the whole story is written so well that the romance wasn’t needed. It takes a bit of time to understand what is happening, I might just be slow, but once I caught on, I loved it. The concept is similar to others but the author added a bunch of twists and turns that I liked. Overall, this is a story worth reading!
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved this book! If I had to compare it to other books, I would categorize it along with The Hunger Games and Divergent series. Jennifer is an incredibly talented writer and draws you in to this book at every turn with her crafty cliff hangers. This book was fun to read and made my nipples hard at some points. I felt as though I were reading a screenplay given how descriptive Jennifer’s writing style is. It is a must read! I will keep talking about it until all of my friends have read it and then I probably will won’t stop talking about it.
This is a good story for fans of Hunger Games, Divergent, Gender Wars, or The Girl Who Lied series. I received a free copy in a Goodreads giveaway, and I was really excited to dive in after reading the summary. The story is good with good tension building of the overall plot. I did not several typos throughout the story, and I was confused on whether two characters were brothers or lovers. Definitely some loose threads that slightly distracted me throughout the reading, but the story was good enough that it didn’t take away from the experience. Thank you!
was given this book by my dad and got both the first and the second signed so i’ve been waiting to dive into them. absolutely loved this book and Mol’s character. i loved how open her and Sebastian’s relationship was and think they are so cute. i thought the twist at the soooo cool and i’m so excited to start Rip Current!

I’m usually all for the dystopian romance but I’m just not feeling this one. There’s not a lot of action to keep me interested like most dystopian books. I’ll finish it later but for now this is my rating. :(
