This book is dedicated to the millions of people who drove the “Mother Road.” For some it was fun and the vacation of a lifetime. For others it was a trip borne of necessity and uncertainty.
But for all, each and every one, it was an adventure.
In the summer of 2018 an assistant and I traveled Route 66 from Tulsa, Oklahoma to the Pacific Ocean. We wanted to document the damage and decay the Mother Road has suffered due to the opening of Interstate 40 and a new attitude among American an attitude where getting to a destination quickly is more important than taking one’s time and enjoying the journey. We found that much of Route 66 is still thriving. Much more of it, unfortunately, is in its death throes. Our advice to our readers is If you haven’t had a chance to travel the route yourselves, find the time to do so. Large parts of it are fading fast.
