Wild Ones Tip #349 If you don’t understand what’s going on, it’s because you haven’t been in Tomahawk long enough.
My sister and I decided to go to Tomahawk to learn more about our estranged grandmother and spend some time together doing something other than networking.
What we expected was some quiet town, a peaceful escape, and a little downtime.
What we got? Two sexy mountain men...who actually wear a lot of flannel, bring fresh kills on first dates, and gripe about screaming a lot. Hypothermia, a broke arm, a possible concussion, and more reckless fun than we've ever had. And a stoner town that prides itself on its weed, crazy challenges, beards, and bizarre character.
Our trip started a little like a horror film...including bad cell signal, spotty internet and womb snatchers. Long story.
Fortunately, it changed pretty quickly.
I actually ended up not spending much time with my sister, but I did spend a lot of time with Kai Wilder. He's the single most unique, easy-going, and...oblivious man I've ever met.
Please tell me this author will keep writing more books in this series!!! I need it like crack. And, I really need crack. I try something once and suddenly I need it all the time. Weird, right?
I say no to everything in this picture. I think he scared me straight!
Anyway... This book is about Kai, a guy who has always lived in the crazy town this series is set in, and Piper, a girl who comes into town to sell her dead grandmother's cabin. She has no idea what she just walked into, and he has no idea that he and his whole town are batshit crazy.
I've been telling you this town is crazy for three reviews now, but I haven't given you an example yet, so here it is.
They are walking through the town when violin music starts playing loudly and he, without a word, starts to Riverdance, along with all of the other men in town.
Her Point-of-View: I'm standing on a sidewalk while all the men river dance....
All the men are river dancing. Like it's normal. Some are even competing and talking smack. None of them can dance. At all. Like...not even a little. They all seem to think they're wonderful at it though...
I can't even describe the level of befuddled I've reached...
His Point-of-View: As the violin plays and men come rushing out of the shops to start river-dancing alongside me, Piper just stares in.... is that horror? Is she horrified?
"W-w-what are you doing? W-what's going on right now?" she asks loudly...
"It's a river-dance," I tell her.
"I sort of figured out that much. Why are there men rushing outside to river dance?" She asks...
"Because they don't want to swim the lake in a tutu while singing some girly song," I explain, finally tripping over my own feet and barely righting myself before I go down. I straighten abruptly, trying to recover by showing off some of my better moves.
Yep... He was trying to impress her with his sick river-dance moves. This was on their second date. On the first one, he showed up covered in blood because he killed a deer for their dinner for her.
And, that right there is all you need to know about this series.
The third instalment in the “Wild Ones” series and I am absolutely charmed by the quirky people of the small town of Tomahawk! I’m sooo glad I came across this hilarious series and I can’t wait for the author to write more books!!! I have nothing bad to say about these stories and I highly recommend them for anyone that is on the lookout for a laugh out loud romance! The stories in this series are so light hearted and low angst... they put a smile on your face, butterflies in your stomach, and love in your heart! I just can’t say enough good about them!
I waited so long for this book and it did not disappoint. You do have to suspend your disbelief a bit, as many of the situations that happen in this book are just too ludicrous to comprehend, but are just dang funny and entertaining that it just works perfectly.
We actually get two romances in this book. The primary one is Piper and Kai Wilder and the second is Piper's sister Reece and Hale Vincent. However their story does not finish in this book. It looks like they will have their own book. Another couple who will probably get their own story is Deacon who is the twin brother of Benson (from the first book) and Krysta Nickel, and then Killian Vincent, Hale's brother (but I can't remember if he is older or younger) and Nila Wilder, Kai's younger sister.
I'm just hoping these next books will come out quickly since I can't wait to read more of this series. Until then I will just have to troll through her other books until they come out.
Release Date: October 23, 2018 Genre: Romantic Comedy Actual Rating: 5 stars
This book is super funny! I devoured it in one sitting and was unable to stop reading until the very end. C.M. Owens has made this one of my all time favorite series because every time I dive into one of these books I am aching for more. The characters are some of the best around and I would gladly live in Tomahawk with them if I could! This is a refreshingly funny series and I can't wait for more Wild Ones (honestly, I don't want to wait though so place write more FAST).
Wilder is the third book in the Wild Ones series but can stand completely on it's own. As I mention in any review about a book that is part of a series I personally recommend reading them in order. This is for two reasons. 1. You get to know the secondary characters from previous books. They are a part (albeit a small one) in the books that come later in the series, but knowing them from their own stories makes more sense for it overall. 2. You can watch the town and it's people grow with every book and see the characters lives after their HEA.
With that, this book is about Piper and Kai Wilder. There is also another romance going on in this book between Piper's sister, Reese and Hale Vincent, but they haven't got their HEA. They clearly need their own book and I hope it's next!
The characters in this series (and the book of course) are crazy, wild, out of their minds, and absolutely HILARIOUS. They live by their own rules and enjoy the quieter way of life (well, until someone sets off an avalanche or blows up the lake). If you like characters that are out of their mind but swoon worthy, this is a must read book and series for you! Also, if you are into lumbersexuals, men with beards, and characters who don't think before they think then it's also a good fit. I highly recommend it!
This is third in a series and they build on one another, so it's best to read in order. Plus, the others are better, so if you haven't read them yet, then for heaven's sake, don't start here!
Yeah, not a great story. By now, you know what you're getting from the town. And Owens manages to keep the humor and hijinks on the same trajectory. Which is to say that they're as good as the other books, and maybe better. Which means that all of the suck (and it's a lot) is with Kai and Piper. Both are entirely negatively motivated*, which is bad enough. But they're also both incredibly stupid with the entire plot being each reading past the other. By about half-way I was so frustrated with Kai being inhumanly stupid and missing every single clue about Piper's interest that I didn't even care that he was being a controlling jerk in dictating the terms of their relationship to his own (unstated and unacknowledged) imagined "needs".
But I found Piper even worse. Yeah, she is as busy misreading Kai and she's also doing the "control the relationship" thing, though on a much milder level. But she's also a huge, freaking coward and wimps out at every. single. turn. And I don't mean just the screaming fits, though I found those off-putting as well. I mean that she dithers and puts-off and hesitates and makes excuses so that I can't think of a single resolve she made that she actually carried through. "Oh, I'm going to tell him how I feel/what I want for sure this time!" No, sister, you are going to chicken out this time, too, just like every other time. Seriously, what does Kai see in this puling coward? The men from the other two books had to square off with the Wild One siblings and at least show that they understand and can match them, even if in their own way using their own resourcefulness. But Piper doesn't even bother getting to know the other Wild Women, let alone have to prove herself enough to be one of them. I find that deeply disappointing and feel like I've been robbed by a sexual double-standard I didn't see coming.
And that's before we even get to Kai's creepy mother. That wasn't a lack of boundaries. That was a lack of basic human empathy accompanied by a stupidity that can't see how her actions pretty much guaranteed her own failure. She's a caricature, is what I'm saying, and a particularly poor one at that.
I was thinking I'd be rounding up to three stars coming into this review (because the hijinks were still laugh-out-loud funny). But I've talked myself into rounding down. I can't say how disappointing this is and I really hope this is a blip in the series and the others recover. If the next is Reese and Hale, then I have little hope, however. Those two were worse in every way and on every dimension, though at least they seemed more compatible...
A note about Steamy: There are three explicit sex scenes, so this is the middle of my steam tolerance. I hated each and every one of them, though, so that's not helping at all. Each one came at the culmination of a lot of stupid so I was frustrated and couldn't care less when things heated up. I skimmed them, to be honest, because I just didn't care if these two ever ended up together and their physical intimacy felt like a cruel joke by the time they got over themselves enough to start kissing.
* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.
I loved book one. I enjoyed the second, bc even though I didn't care about the couple, I loved the crazy town. So, I'm asking, what happened to my lovely crazy town? They became too much in this book. The guys antics during the date made me laugh out loud though.
The deja Vu is strong right now,see I was eagerly anticipating this book because I really liked the previous ones in this series.....just as I had eagerly anticipated Adrenaline Rush by this author and was very disappointed....same story here! I'm not even sure I can explain what went wrong
I wrote and deleted this review 4 times and honestly as much as I loved some of this author's other books, this one just isn't worth the stress
The first half or maybe 3/4 of this book was slow,Piper annoyed me so much I almost dnf on many occasions Kai being such an oblivious idiot came as a surprise for some reason I expected more from him The Reese/Hale side story made no sense as she/they? Will apparently get their own book Not even the Wild ones humor could save this book Liam is a pansy?🤔 The flip from him pursuing her to her wanting him was out of the blue
The last 25% was more like what I expected from this author but by that point it was too little too late!
Ahhhhhhh I just can't! At the end of this I'm still not sure what I read, maybe when the ball of disappointment receeds I may rewrite this.
*If,like me, you were disppointed by Adrenaline Rush then you may want to start this book with low expectations that way you won't be disappointed!
Will I read more by this author? yes because I'm still hopeful for more hits like Drex,Axle and Becoming a Vincent!
I love this community. It would be fun to go and visit for a while and watch the crazy shenanigans.
I hope C.M Owens continues this series. It is so enjoyable and I am invested in seeing the Wild Ones get their HEAs. Hope Reese and Hale are next but am happy for anyone.
no ok i thought i could review this one but- KAI WILDER
nope not a coherent thought found
still the funniest series ever beards crazy shenanigans crazy families and interactions with crazy characters we've previously met in the other books, it's literally a town of besties who rejoice in chaos and destruction. This is Tomahawk. And I'm in love.
WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE I CANT WAIT FOR KILLIAN AND NILA OR KRYSTA AND DEACON SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE
and did i mention i love Kai Wilder? cause i love Kai Wilder a very whole lot.
It's a tie with Benson and I didn't think anyone in Tomahawk could beat Benson.
I got a bit bored while reading this one. It started well but after a while i just wasn't that interested and the characters frustrated me a bit. I can't wait to read about Killian and Nilla though.
Amazing! I fall more in love with this series every time I read it and now I can add this book to the list. Loved Kai and Piper. Was great to have an insight into the Wilder family. Can’t wait for the next books. Can already tell that they’re going to be epic. Highly recommend.
Kai Wilder saves Piper's life after a disastrous rescue of a deer goes awry. Piper awakens in a compromising position with Kai and is mortified. The city girl meets one of the Wilder boys who have quite the reputation in Tomahawk. Piper quickly believes the town is full of crazies and she seems to be dating in one of them.
Kai realizes Piper is not in Tomahawk to stay, but a fling is ok and he makes sure the locals know she is his. However, this dating gig is a lot more work then he thought and mixed message lead to confusing feelings on both parts. Could Kai be wrong about Piper being there to stay though?
This was so much fun, each chapter has funny little tips. I thought the characters were a hoot and you get a side romance with Piper's sister too. This has some laugh out loud moments and definitely one to pick up if looking to put a smile on your face.
I completely loved this series but it was a bittersweet experience finishing this last book as it is clear that the author planned on writing more of this series and sadly she passed away in 2021....now we will never know what might have been with Hale and Reese or Killian and Nila and that just breaks my heart. Piper and Kai ...so sweet and unexpectedly perhaps my favorite romance of the three books though all three were delightful reads. I really got caught up in the lives of all the Wild ones and the crazy town of Tomahawk.
I love this ridiculous town and these characters...they are all so extra but in a good way.. it is hard to recommend this series to everyone because it is not for everyone.. but if you vibe with the writing you will have a great time and smile on your face while reading this..
dare I say it I loved more the side romance between Hale & Reece! it is hard to care about storyline if you are not familiar with the characters from previous books and it is not a book or series to read out of order.. you could but still..
every time I get immersed in this world I want more...
Rating: 2.75* Genre: rom-com Tropes: friends to lovers, low angst
Least favorite of this series. Although the charm of Tomahawk remains, there's a loss in quality with each new book. The characters are not very well fleshed. Kai seems way more interesting in the previous book. He's almost bland here.
Owens stories usually drags me right the fuck in. This one sadly did not, and I am feeling really bad about not loving it. 😬 #ireallylovethewildones #ipromise
Owens still writes amazing. Her “flow” is carefree and uncomplicated (at least in her Wilder series). And I like her pace. Nothing negative there to say! 💜
The characters in this particular story was just not doing it for me. Kai Wilder was pictured to be the WILDEST and most CRAZY of the wild ones (previous books) and he was so “soft”. Too mild I guess. Boy, did he seem mild! I gotta say I get he was inexperienced, but it was up to a point that it was too much. He was so ridiculous oblivious that it wasn’t even funny. Loved the relationship he had with Cougar though. That shit was funny.
I actually like Piper, and boy was I embarrassed right with her at times😂 I did miss more background. I know the author explained a few things, but to me they were important because I did feel a bit lost. 🤷🏻♀️
Why they were attracted to each other, I still don’t know. They had some really good moments. Some were sweet, some were funny and some were crazy, but I didn’t really “feel” their chemistry. I guess this book missed it target with me. *insert axe-instead of book*
I did miss a bit of tension. Whenever I felt like the bubble was gonna bust, it just defused. Nice and easy. It made the characters feelings seem “irrelevant”. Found that to be kind of sad. 😞
The Wild Ones “world” is still such a nice place to get lost in, and I did enjoy the book, but I wasn’t sold. Will however be continuing the series. 🥰
Read: 04/10/2019 1st rating: 3 stars Genre/sub-genres: rom-com/fun/mountain men Cover: 3 stars POV: Dual -1st person(Piper & Kai) Will I recommend: Still a yes. 👏
So, Wilder was absolutely laugh out loud funny for most of the books, then CM Owens decided to tear our hearts out with a teaspoon for a bit, and end on an epic note. All the feels. Basically what I’ve come to expect from this exceptional author who shall forever remain in my one click list. I’ll be honest, I actually didn’t like Piper at first; she seemed very judgmental her sister was a lot nicer. Of course, as it’s CM Owens, the h slowly grows on you until you’re rooting for her; then she she reveals a past that makes you want to murder just about everyone in her life, and you’re Number One Piper Fan. Kai Wilder is sooooo ridiculously swoon awkward and entirely worthy all at once. He as no conception of social norm, like just about anyone from Tomahawk, and I think that he entirely balance Piper out in that respect. Plus, as a crazy cat lady, I just have to adore him.
I adored these 3 books, they were so much fun to read and also heart captivating as well. I’m quite sad that there are no other follow on books as the scene was set for several more which is so disappointing. Hopefully when C.M. Owens health improves she’ll be back with new stories. The town of Tomahawk has plenty of single men and women to match make with
Celebrating my second 1 star book 💃 (i'm disappointed i was hoping something so good)
What's that ? I don't know what i just read, but that clearly was not for me.
Everything is happening so much too quickly, no context, nothing at all??
Pipper falls into a lake, and is saved by Kai. In the meantime, his sister has time to plan a date for the two of them. Surprise !!!! Piper's date happens to be Kai.
I want to point out that everything literally has to happen in two days??
To make matters worse, the two men had the good idea of killing a deer for the meal. But who says that skinning a deer in front of your date's door is a good idea???
Frankly, I think there was a better way to make a good impression. No really, my brain doesn't want to process what I just read.
They don't know each other at all but Piper's sister is almost madly in love with Hale. Kai only wants to impress Piper in order to kiss her and maybe more.
Oh but wait, yes, the guy saved her life, she must necessarily be at his feet !!!!!
Un-fucking-believable. I saved Piper’s life. That alone should have her practically in my lap. Just sayin’.
💀💀💀
“I know you’re not sticking around, and I want to raise my kid on my land, so I won’t be knocking you up,” I tell her on a sigh. Sort of sucks. She really is fucking gorgeous, and seems nice enough. She isn’t running and screaming, and that’s already more progress than I make with most girls. She looks…confused. Her lips are puckered, her brow is scrunched, and her head is slightly tilted. “Um…thanks?” she finally says, wording it in a questioning tone. “My babies will be fucking pretty. Just look at me,” I inform her, gesturing to all of me. “You should probably be upset instead of thanking me.” Probably best if she knows what a catch I am.
I mean if you're not into far fetched over the top shit then this probably not for you.
However me, I love me some crazy and this has that by the boat load.
The wild ones are everything I need and want in my life!. It's one huge crazy family getting up to all sorts of hilariously dysfunctional shenanigans that will have you dying in laughter. I haven't laughed at a book like I do at these stories in I don't know how long.
Your getting more than you bargained for here because whilst the main characters are Kai and Piper, you are also getting a sneak peak into Hale & Reece and how they started. Also you have two other couple possibilities.. that's not set in stone yet but I'm gather that's where this author is going with it.
As per with these stories they are wild, uber far fetched and at some points really fucking ridiculous in the best ways. I laughed so hard through so much of this story that it's impossible to not love it for that reason alone. However there is so much more to them that just the humour. You have two very different characters in a slow burn romance trying to navigate through their very different lives and way of living whilst learning to understand eachother but not get to close because inevitably one is leaving. It's sweet, funny and despite them being outrageously far fetched... they at times are also pretty relatable. It's easy to love their larger than life personalities and sense of community... even when they're throwing axe's at eachother.
Are not as wild after all. I thought this book was good but the first two were way better. I was actually disappointed somewhat after the last two books telling me how wild the Wilder's were.
Don't get me wrong some parts were funny but I expected it to live up to the hype and have some batshit crazy moments. That just wasn't the case unfortunately.
I love, love, love this series. It's just so much fun. There are a bunch of time where you could go "That wouldn't happen" but don't do it, don't be serious just let your imagination go with it. I laughed out loud so many times during this book.
I wish Tomahawk was real, I'd move there in a heartbeat.
2.5 stars The certain charm of the first book definately wears off by the 3rd one. It was tediously long, too absurd and cringy at times. Didn't like the characters, sorry. The only thing that intrigued me was the reason behind Reese's behavior post break-up.
This is the story between Kai Wilder and Piper something. We also get a big part of Hale Vincent and Reese something's story.
I wish we had gotten Hale's full story instead of Kai and Piper's. Hale and Reese appear so sweet together and they fully embrace their relationship throughout their appearances. It's because of Hale approaching Reese that Kai and Piper even get to know each other better. So I feel cheated. Instead of a fun, carefree adventure between crazy, charming Hale and loose, wild Reese, we get a stiff, boring story about Kai who is hardly wild and Piper who couldn't seduce a bought-and-paid for escort.
There were plenty of funny parts, but Piper's attempts at seduction were painfully sad. Piper and Kai's connection was so lame. The only moment she talks to him on a deeper level, it's a short conversation in the car and they never have another meaningful conversation. They have sex once and then Kai avoids any physical interaction. I was just not feeling it. Even the wildness of the first two books was missing in this one because this girl is a screamer. She's afraid of EVERYTHING and her flight-or-fight response is actually just freezing in the face of danger. And she's a screamer! It wouldn't bother me that much but the H, Kai, constantly mentions how he hates screamers and he winces every time she screams. I have no idea why they like each other.
I would have loved to read about Hale and Jesse, but I didn't like how they ended things here. Anyway, I don't want to go through that angst.
I liked catching up with the characters from previous books. Lilah and Benson will forever be my favorite couple of the series. They were pretty tame in this book, just enjoying their wedded bliss. No babies yet though. I would read a Wild Ones 1.5 in a heartbeat.
