The Guernsey Saga #2

An Elusive Freedom

Rate this book
Guernsey 1945. Home at last.

For fifteen-year-old Suzanne Gaudion the years of waiting, longing and dreaming of this moment are finally ended. But never during those years had she dreamt that home was so beautiful. The lovely old town of St Peter Port glows pink in the early morning sun as the ship returning evacuees from the British mainland draws into the harbour.

Suzanne had been evacuated with her school only a few days before the island was occupied by the Germans. Now, after five long years adrift among strangers, she is returning to her homeland, and the love and security of her family.

Except might they not too, after five years separation, seem like strangers to one another? After all, Suzanne had left Guernsey a child, but was returning as a young woman. And she was returning to parents who had been forced to watch their home transformed from a virtual island-idyll into a land of repression and hardship during the occupation. Would Greg and Sarah Gaudion be the same loving care-free people of Suzanne’s childhood memories? She is about to find out . . .

In the tradition of Mary Wesley and Kate Atkinson, this is the second instalment in Diana Bachmann's bittersweet and evocative Guernsey Saga.

Diana Bachmann was born in Guernsey in 1950. She has three children and six grandchildren, plus a large family of stepchildren and step-grandchildren. Having lived in the Bahamas and Spain with her second husband, bestselling author Christopher Nicole, she has since returned to Guernsey. Inspired by her own experiences as a child evacuee during the Nazi occupation of the island, she authored the popular Guernsey Saga series.

An excellent read.

The sequel to A Sound Like Thunder, this story is of the aftermath of WW2 in Guernsey with flashbacks to life in Britain during the war. Once more, a well written and enjoyable read.

Continue with Suzanne Martel's life. Because she was evacuated to England, she did not experience life on the island during WWII but her life was not an easy one as she had no one that actually loved her. When she returned to Guernsey she felt that her parents were very different and treated her like
the ten year old she was when she left the island. Sue married and her husband was in an accident which left him paralyzed. Sue was the brunt of his temper and sought solice in another!

As the second book in a trilogy this didn’t ‘grab me’ in the same way as the first did. This didn’t stop me from enjoying it and sympathising with the main character Suzanne.
A well written story, thought provoking ( what would I do in that situation) but a few silly spelling mistakes which annoyed me- if Diana wants a proof reader I’m happy to help!!

Loved this book. Being a Guernsey girl it was good to read the second book in the series, now on the 3rd! The characters were great and the story moving.
