Rate this book

Lol, pug pups pulling a sled

Pugs of the Frozen North is a cute story about a boy and 66 baby pugs that are stranded in the far north. They end up in a race, a great sled race but instead of big hairy dogs, he has little pugs in sweaters. It is a magical winter so they meet more than snow. Adorable illustrations!

Having read other books by Philip Reeve, my children were keen to review this latest – “Pugs of the Frozen North.” With fourteen chapters and just over 200 pages, this is probably best for more confident readers, aged approx 7+. However, it has lots of fantastic illustrations, which not only break up the text for the more reluctant reader, but also helps the story appeal to a younger audience, as well as being good to read aloud.

Shen is the cabin boy on the “Lucky Star” when the ship becomes trapped in ice. In the hold are sixty-six pugs, which Captain Jeggings had hoped to sell. When he needs to lighten the load though, it is the pugs he abandons and Shen ends up stranded with them. Looking for help, he finds Sika, who tells him about the Great North Run. The prize is “Your Heart’s Desire” and Shen and Sika decide to take part, with the pugs pulling the sleigh.

What follows is a really exciting adventure through a frozen world, inhabited with snow trolls, sea monsters, the Kraken, hungry yetis and fifty different kinds of snow. Rather like the “Wizard of Oz,” our heroes have to make their way to the icicle palace of the Snow father, who can grant wishes. Will they make it and will Shen find what he most desires?

This is a really exciting adventure story and the illustrations match the storyline perfectly. Many are dark, which captures the bleak, icy landscape. However, the illustrations are cute and appealing, rather than scary. This book will have appeal to both boys and girls and both my children look forward to reading more books by Philip Reeve.

This book was hilarious and awesome. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it started right in with the adventure. Shen and Sika are great protagonists (and I coded Sika and her family as Inuit or some other northern indigenous people which is nice).

I really especially loved Helga Hammerfest, who has polar bears pull her sled and who is big and strong and owns the shit out of her fabulous beard.

"Most ladies don't care for beards, but I find mine helps to keep my chin warm in the frozen north. You should try growing yours, Miss Mitzi."
I can't even with this lady. She knows what she's into (polar bears, winter) and she just does her. <3

Here's a blog post from Sarah McIntyre, the illustrator, about Helga Hammerfest and the #nonidentikit challenge that she created to introduce more diversity into female characters! Love.

I picked this up initially because it looked ridiculous, but in the end I actually kind of enjoyed it. For it's intended audience, it's a quirky, comical adventure that I would definitely recommend. The 66 pugs and their names in the end of the book might be my favorite part.

Yet another wonderful addition to the Reeves and McIntyre duo and expelling the myth that 'there are no good books for younger children'. When Shen finds himself abandoned upon a frozen sea along with 66 pugs, he is unsure of his fate. Fortunately, he encounters Sika and her family. She agrees to look after the dogs so long as they can be part of a sledging competition in which the winner is granted their heart's desire.
As always, these pages are packed with wonderful silliness, from sea monster to noodle-eating yetis. McIntyre and Reeve must work incredibly closely on this since all pages are a delight to look at and read. Credit must also go to shape, size and design. I love the fact that it feels like a thick, real book and those readers just taking flight will be enjoy their reading journey feeling like they have read a real novel. The ending is beautiful too.

Just like some adults like to watch cartoons I like to grab a children's book from time to time. Cute animals on the cover are often a magnet (especially bunnies. When it comes to bunnies I will "read" books written for 1 year olds)

But I always try to review it on how good it is for the kids. Because they are the target of the book so who cares what some middle aged people think. And honestly I think in this case the book will be almost as fun for the parents as for their kids. I really liked it now and something tells me that when I was 8 or so this book would have been one of my favorites (thus 5 stars as a children book)

It has an interesting story with a lot of adventures and some life lessons on how important it is to help each other. They even added a story about a dying grandpa showing that there is nothing that can be done against it but he was still happy at the end by getting what he wanted in his life.

It is funny and has 66 cute pugs. The illustrations are great as well. So I'll tell my goodreads friends with kids to get this book. You will not be bored when reading it to your kid even for the 5th time.

Pugs of the Frozen North

Winter came in the night, like a white sheet laid over the world.
- first sentence

Shen is on a ship called the Lucky Star when all of the sudden winter comes, but not just any winter... it's a magical winter (True Winter). The ocean freezes and then Shen saves the cargo... 66 pugs. While Shen is trying to save the pugs, he gets left behind by his captain. He is alone, walking with the pugs across the frozen ocean. Then he gets to a Post Office (whose letters only say "Po Of ice". There he meets Sika, who ends up bringing him and the pugs, on an exciting adventure.  Together, they enter the Great Nothern Race, and whoever wins gets a wish from the Snowfather.

This is a cute story. I read it in one sitting and liked it. There is a great deal of adventure and danger that Shen, Sika, and the pugs have to face. But, they do it together and help each other, and their competitors along the way.

The ending is pretty predictable, but the journey is still fun.

This book was nominated for a 2017-18 Sunshine State Young Readers Award in the 3-5 grade category. It's a quick read and fun. I think it will appeal to reluctant readers, and pug lovers of course! :)

Very, very funny, wildly imaginative, incredibly clever, and there was one point in the climax that was so moving, it was actually hard to read out loud (to my seven-year-old, who ADORED this book and demanded that it all be read to him in less than a day!) because I was actually crying a little bit as I read. Just lovely!

My seven-year-old and I have read and really enjoyed all three of Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre's collaborations. This was my favorite by far, which is really saying something; my seven-year-old says he loves this as much as he loved Oliver and the Seawigs (the first of them), which is also really saying something, because, as he explained, "I love Oliver a LOT."

So in other words, highly recommended by both of us! (And my seven-year-old was SO outraged when he realized we were reading a library copy that we would have to return later. THAT will be rectified very soon! This is clearly a book that we need to own, for many re-readings. :) )

Antaisin vielä puolikkaan tähden tuohon päälle, ihan hauska tarina, joskin melko kliseiset hahmot: on ylimielistä aatelista, luonnonvoimia selittäviä alkuasukkaita ja orpopoika kaupanpäälle. Plussaa itsevarmasta, jääkarhujen vetämästä parrakkaasta Helgasta.

Kustantajalle vahvaa palautetta suomennoksen rivityksestä: rivit jatkuvat mielivaltaisti sivujen yli ja sanoja katkotaan aukeamien välillä. Ei näin, aikuisellakin on vaikeuksia seurata sanoja.

You need this in your life as a treat. It's cute, rather clever, has a positive message and is surprising enough. The illustrations are wonderful. I'm actually planning on getting at least one more by the same authors.

A whimsical and action packed adventure! The polar setting, the adorkable pugs, and the awesome cast of characters made this a very enjoyable read, something I know I would have enjoyed just as much when I was younger. Definitely recommended!

Lastenromaanien parhaimmistoa ja nythän pitää varata muitakin Reeven kirjoja kirjastosta. Sopivaa, nopeaa maagista seikkailua, mutta tarpeeksi simppeliä.

Meillä ei koirat kiinnosta yhtään, mutta tämän kirjan 66 mopsia olivat juuri sopivasti aivan sivuosassa.

I can easily recommend any of these as read alouds, they’ve turned out to be so fun and engaging. (This one, Cakes in Space, and Oliver and the Sea Monkeys all by the same author/illustrator).

The illustrations are a plenty and adorable.

The story is adventurous and fun.

My kids are 5/6 and they loved it and they stayed involved the whole time.

Noticed one more book by the author and illustrator and will absolutely pick it up.

Read this to my almost 5 year old and just LOVED IT! Great storyline and imagination within the story. Beautiful yet comprehensible language for a toddler. Lots of pictures to keep attention and help understand the language. Can’t wait to read his other books in this series!
