This series is one of my favourites. I devoured all 4 books and can highly recommend them. One thing I've noticed about this author is his ability to create characters that you immediately connect with. Every single one of them were well written and developed and they are characters you can easily care about. Another this is that he can write incredibly well. These books are incredibly scary because it's a threat that could happen. You can tell that the author did his research with how descriptive he is, not only with the EMP, but also the effects it has, and I particularly loved how descriptive he was with the Cherokee parts. It was fascinating!!

Each of the books in this series are action packed, filled with so many tense and edge of your seat moments that you will not be able to put it down, and absolutely terrifying! They are intense, emotional and down right brilliant. If you haven't read these books, I urge you to try them!

I liked Nicholas Sansbury Smith’s first Hell Divers book (have yet to read the others), and I love the post-apocalyptic genre. Seemed like a good combination so I went all-in on getting the 4-book series. Unfortunately, I didn’t love this. Many of the characters lacked the type of depth I look for, and the one I liked the most didn’t live past the first book. Another who had potential just faded out of the story and was completely forgotten about by the author. I found myself more exasperated by the characters than endeared toward them. And I think the author spent too much time in the head of the enemy. I don’t mean to belittle the author’s character development, just saying for me personally, it wasn’t to my taste. When comparing with Franklin Horton’s The Borrowed World, this story didn’t come close to what I was hoping for. It took me seven months to finally finish this series, not because it’s overly long, but because I needed to take constant breaks. Reading it was a slog, not a sprint, so reading other stuff in between helped me come back more refreshed. I’m glad I finished it, but it’s not something I’d recommend for fellow Franklin Horton fans.

Write about what you know...

Storyline was entertaining enough but it became obvious early in the story that the author has little if any first hand experience with anything military. Lots of over exaggeration and embellishment about methods and weapons. Spoiler alert for all you nonmilitary types, a M240 is NOT a big gun and is not capable of the firepower the author writes about. Please for your own sake and that of the reader, do some research, watch some YouTube videos or something that will give you better idea about the capabilities of different weapon systems. Fiction is best told if there is some plausibility of reality involved.

Seriously?

I am at a loss for words with the first Trackers. Book — why do people like this. How did it get so many positive reviews? It was dumb and the character Raven ... worst character in the book. I mean, it was just so terrible. The ending was dumb and the fact that an EMP would actually happen is totally ridiculous - and the way the EMP reaction from everyone was described was poorly written. It just made no sense - a kid breathing through a pump suddenly wakes up - Allie is taken by two idiots - at least that’s how interpreted them. There was hardly a build up with these two bad guys. Hey let’s bring in a water cannibals storyline on top of an EMP attack. Just stupid ... stupid... stupid. I can’t even with the next one ... I can’t believe I wasted time on this book - sorry Nick - but this just wasn’t good, too much going on, too many jumps in the story and .... edit issues. Blah.

I love post-apocalyptic fiction. I've read great, well-written, well-researched books of this genre, all the way to crap. This series falls in the lower end of okay for me, and I don't get how it can be much higher for anyone else. Prepare for my honest opinion:
Are you a progressive liberal? Did you vote for Hillary? Then this may be the post-apocalyptic fiction for you! My mother and I listened to this series together over a long trip and we both got the same vibes. The author portrays the US military as inept imbeciles that just want to hurt or kill all the dumb civilians. The civilians are majority sheep that can't survive without the government survival centers and FEMA. The white people are all racist. Literally. Even the good ones have latent, micro racism. Well, the SecDef isn't racist, but she's an incompetent elitist. She's written as a practical saint, but anyone with any intelligence should be able to see how terrible and selfish she is. Lady had no business doing literally anything she did in this series, but she's supposed to be some kind of hero. And there are preppers in this series, but they're barely side characters. They are referenced as weirdo fringe people to fear, and they show up late every time they're needed. The action scenes are written like a bad B movie. Blood geysering out of everyone, and people being spun around by shots all the time. And racist, Nazi's everywhere, taking over the country. But who comes to the rescue of this pathetic, racist nation? China. Let me say that again. China saves the day. Their military is competent, their aid workers are amazing. What does stupid America do? Try to take out the sweet, kind Chinese that just want to help, because we can't handle these different looking people here. I just cannot wrap my head at how anyone can look at their own country and see such lawfulness. It is clear to me that the author has a background in government because he actually thinks it is the government that makes this country great, not it's citizens. This was close to a DNF, but after getting a couple of books in we just wanted to know what happened to Raven in the end. Don't be like us though, it wasn't worth it.

Warm. Dark. Savage.
This series begins with an EMP attack by North Korea that impacts much of the continental United States and things go downhill from there. Potent suspense, meticulous research and superb writing combine to make the Trackers series some of the author’s best work.

Great series

A terrific series. Every book is as good as the next. Smith has created himself a new classic for the apocalyptic fiction genre. A true gem.

4 chapters in and the difference between the storytelling of this book compared to the After series by William Fortchesten (sp?) is like universes apart. so far.
didn’t like: points deducted for prologue AND an introduction. I'm not really hooked to this story or its characters and I should be by now. took a while to get hooked.
serial killer subplot was unnecessary as all get out and distracting to the main story.
also the jumping around w different characters is confusing as all.
having a combat veteran who prefers a crossbow to a gun is absurd, btw. calling US Army Special Forces “Green Berets” is a joke. the only people who call them “Green Berets” are the uneducated public. they would never be referred to as that within their community and certainly not on an Op.
also, the whole idea that the new sec def would endanger the lives of a team to find one person (her son), and then send out another team to find her friend’s sister, seemed quite weak storytelling. and that the son, would also be as ignorant/naive as he was, with a mom as a senator and an uncle in the military, is not a choice I would have made.
there needed to be more character arcs, within the character pooled as POV for the story.
having the introduction REPEATED for each effing book was irritating as all, as well as having it AGAIN for the ending credit. yeah, okay, I think we got the message the first time. poor choice of production/publishing, on whomever insisted upon it.
liked: LOTR references were a fookin riot!, some of the dialogue was hilarious, enjoyed the variety of characters, some emotional punches.

Loved this Series!

This may be the most frightening apocalypse series that I’ve read. It’s so well written, the characters are ppl that might live next door. The main character is an American Indian, a veteran, a former marine, suffering from a mild case of PTSD. He starts out with a drinking problem, in debt to a loan shark, his life a mess but he has an absolute devotion to his sister, her daughter and his best friend, his dog.
After the nukes has taken out most of our infrastructure and rained down the horrors of fire and radiation in some places, most of our country descends into chaos. Our America Indians home town is a lucky area in Colorado that escapes the worst of everything. Sam or better known as Raven is determined to protect his sister and niece. Because of his sisters past poor taste in men a crazed former lover comes hunting her.
Then the loan sharks men come calling. The little community that’s doing everything it can to survive soon attracts the interest of every outlaw predator in the area. Fortunately they make some powerful friends along the way that has given them some help.
There are other fascinating characters and the excitement and suspense lasts until the end.

Unnecessary f#%?ed up s&!@. There’s already atomic bombs, why do you have to have a psychotic serial killer too? Completely unnecessary and disgusting. I made it halfway through the first book before I was too disgusted to continue. Just from the serial killer. Honestly everything else was great, and I would’ve loved to finish the series, if it didn’t have the grotesque side story.

My Book Review Number 176:

This review is on The Trackers Series, Books 1-4, by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. This is the first Box Set, but not the first stories I have read by this Sci-Fi author. This suspenseful story is about a post apocalyptic event caused by a surprise North Korean EMP attack on the US.

The story based on a very real possibility that something like this could occur in present day America, especially with the current situation with a hostile country like North Korea. The only surprise is who comes to America’s aid after such as attack.

I bought the whole series expecting a good story since I first read another series several years ago called ORBS, reading all the books individually in the series. The Trackers Series grabbed my attention from the beginning and held me to the end.

Trackers 1 begins by introducing one of the main characters, Raven Spears, who is a US Marine on a special mission to rescue a kidnapped girl inside North Korea. Some months later the setting changes to Estes Park, Colorado where a serial killer is lose and the local Police Chief named Marcus Colton tries to track the killer down with the help of Raven who is the local tracker. As tensions mount between North Korea and the US, war breaks out with a surprise attack using nuclear EMP weapons that knock out most of the electrical power grid across America causing mass panic, rioting and death from radiation and starvation. Another character is introduced, Senator Charlize Montgomery, living in Washington DC when the attack occurs. She becomes involved when her son is kidnapped in Colorado near Estes Park.

Trackers 2 continues the story but with a new twist. One of the results of the attack is the rise of extremist groups that want to take control of the country away from the US Government and impose their own style of power. Marcus Cole and Raven Spears try to save their town from these groups of extremists.

Trackers 3 starts three weeks after the attack. By this time many people have died in Estes Park due to violence and illness among other things. Winter is coming and food is in short supply. Marcus’s biggest concern is trying to protect the town from a Nazis extremist group by tracking down the leader and stopping him with Raven’s help.

Trackers 4 brings the story to its climax with intense fighting among extremists and gangs that try to take control of any remaining food supplies in the country. The government is trying to set up safety centers, restore power and get more aid from friendly countries to help rebuild America. It is a very trying and dangerous time for everyone concerned.

I give this series Five Stars because all the stories are interesting and entertaining from start to finish. It is hard to put the series down. The characters are believable and the plot lines are realistic. The effects of an EMP attack are very real and life threatening. The stories are well written with excellent dialogue. This type of attack could easily happen in America and we are probably not ready for it. This story should serve as a warning what preparations are needed to survive such an attack. I look forward to reading more stories from this author.

Keep reading good science fiction and let me know when you find an interesting novel or author.

North Korea exploded an EMP device high over America, turning the power grid into worthless wire.

In retaliation, North Korea was treated to a storm of nuclear missiles, leveling the country with nuclear fire. A container ship containing a hidden nuclear device exploded just outside Washington D.C., destroying the Whitehouse and Capital Building, and burying the PEOC under tons of concrete and burning rubble. The EMP wave also destroyed the electronics in most modern devices, including cars built after 1969. The highways had quickly become crammed with nonfunctional autos and trucks and people with nowhere to go and no way to get there.
Without power, the situation was becoming desperate in Estes Park, Colorado, home of the famous Stanley Hotel. Police Chief Marcus Colton and his small force struggle to maintain order and calm to the growing population of their town. Not everyone is pleased with the influx of refugees sharing the dwindling supplies. Break ins, burglaries and robberies plague Colton's police force. Much of the crime wave leads back to a recovery and rehabilitation facility. Major Nathan Sardetti, stranded when his fighter jet was caught by the EMP wave and forced to eject in the area, helped Colton and Cherokee tracker Sam 'Raven' Spears capture the responsible crew.
Nathan and Raven head south in Raven's old jeep, one of the few vehicles not incapacitated by the EMP, to find what happened to Nathan's nephew, Ty Montgomery at the request of his sister Charlize. Ty was staying at a children's summer camp in southern Colorado. Ty was paralyzed, denied the use of his legs in the same accident that killed his father. His mother, Secretary of Defense Charlize Montgomery, had sent a team to the camp to find and return Ty to safety. The team. . .

Okay, you're going to have to find out what happens to these terrific, colorful, loved or hated - no in between, characters as they come to terms with the events disrupting their lives. You can feel their fear, share their terror, scream with their pain, and your tears join theirs in their grief. The action is spot-on, adrenaline and fear pumped, blood and gunpowder explode from the pages. This is one pulse-pounding, heart-racing, terrifyingly real, all-too-possible tale from a master storyteller! Don't take my word for it, you really have to read this series!

Gritty, Raw, and Intense
If you're looking for an escapist read, this probably isn't it. Based on the all-too-real possibility of multiple EMP blasts striking the United States, this story throws the reader/listener right into the action. And it's not all heroism and nice guys winning.

Nicholas Sansbury Smith takes the reader on a raw and realistic journey through the first several weeks of chaos following an unexpected strike on American soil. This is a bit reminiscent of the old film, "Wolverines" in that it doesn't pull any punches or spare the reader the gory details. Most interesting to me was how the author would take the time to create a character with a backstory and provide him/her with engaging personality traits so that readers would come to appreciate this person. Then he would bump them off in some heinous way just to remind us that this could easily become more than a fictional story. More than once I grew to appreciate a character and then was shocked when that person met a gruesome end. This world the author has painted for his readers is graphic and violent. It's also quite realistic in many of its presumptions regarding governmental response to the disaster.

If you're a fan of apocalyptic reads, this is one you won't want to miss. If you've never dipped your toe into this genre, this is a great place to see how you like it. Not all post-apocalyptic fiction is quite so realistic and gritty, but this will give the reader an excellent sense of what may be in store.

Great read.

A 4 book series, post apocalyptic. Pshaw you say, that’s nothing new.

OK, how about a realistic apocalypse? North Korea has made a mass attack on the US, Washington and almost every major city is gone, the electrical grid is down, half the leaders dead.....

And then comes Chaos, capital “C”. The inner city gangs and mobsters rise up to take advantage, making the inner cities hell holes. But worse than that (really? worse than a hell hole?) are the white supremacists, led by Dan Fenix, as dark as sole as has ever tread a must tome.

Sorry, it’s Friday, feelin literary...

Most of the action takes place in Estes Park, CO, protected by the Sherriff,Markus Colten, and Sam “Raven” Spears, a half Sioux, half Cherokee former Marine. It’s a small town where the new Secretary of Defense’s brother, Nathan, crash lands after a North Korean EMP takes out his Jet. Charlize Montgomery, the SOD, plays a prominent part also .

And that’s just the start. There are heroics aplenty, dastardly villains, and sad comments on humanity at it’s worst, and best.

The best thing I can say abt this set is that I read the first two books, took a break, an came back for the last two. You know how sometimes you need to reacquaint yourself with a book? Not here, it took about two page for me to remember the main characters and plot lines, a compliment to Mr. Sansbury Smith.

I was fortunate to acquire the four volume boxed set. It was a real treat to listen to the entire series front to back over two days. Perhaps it was because I had the entire series, but this has been one of the most interesting and enjoyable post-apocalyptic survival series I have listened to. The characters were well developed and likable. Their inner strength and patriotism is defined as honorable, brave, and selfless. The story revolved around several major characters and points of interest; the nuclear attacks, the pandemic virus, the town of Estes Park - Colorado, Police Chief Marcus Colton, Sam 'Raven' Spears, Air Force Major Nathan Sardetti, Secretary of Defense Charlize Montgomery, Charlize’s son Ty, and of course the loyal and fearless Akita ‘Creek’. There are also several villains and ne’er-do-wells that cause more problems than the EMP itself. The strength and perseverance of the characters was admirable, the passion and spirit injected into the story was heart-warming. I truly enjoyed this series and would definitely recommend the box set if you can get it.

If you're looking for an exhilarating experience, don't pass up the opportunity to read the Trackers four book set. You say you like action and thrills, then this is the perfect book. You may well overload because this book is filled with action and intense exhilarating moments. From book one you are set up for a mind blowing experience, one that opens your eyes to the fact that the impossible can very well become a hard truth overnight. Smith weaves a chilling tale of "what if". What if the good old USA was hit with an EMP (electromagnetic pulse)? Smith lays it all out, the devastation, the fear, the power struggle, the cruelty, the deviousness, the full gamut of human feelings. He leaves nothing out. This is one tale no one wishes to ever come true. Smith spins his tale through four suspenseful, thrilling but also chilling books. You are in for a ride from the moment you are introduced to Sam "Raven" Spears and the small community of Estes Park, Colorado. Do not miss the opportunity of experiencing this fantastic read.

The best part about a box set is that all the series is back to back - no stopping to change to the next book.

The Trackers series encompasses the lives of people connected in some way to a smaller community in the state of Colorado. Just like any city before the event, it had its ups and downs as well as petty disagreements. When a foreign entity does its best to eliminate the US from the map, this group of individuals must learn to listen and work together to survive. Will they be able to do so?

I love how the author showed the difference between the way the community was before, including the interactions and the way things became after the event. What is even scarier is that this type of event is plausible. It made me appreciate the little things in life even more.

Parental note: As expected this post-apocalyptic series contains violence as well as adult language and situations.

I stumbled upon this author because I needed Bronson Pinchott to help me through several weeks of an extended commute. I enjoyed his narrative style in Larry Coreia's Hard Magic and Mike Kupari's Dead-Six series. This is my first foray in the combination prepper /end of days /apocolyptic genre. So my expectations where un-tested. If Sansbury is accurate at describing human nature and the effects on electronics that an EMP could cause based on his work with Homeland Security and Emergency Management in disaster mitigation then this could be considered a wake up call to those that are ill prepared.

His research and familiarity with Estes Park, the location of this story, had me jumping in and out of Google Maps to locate many of the landmarks the characters interacted with.

There are a few scenerios where I had to suspend disbelief for the sake of the story, but all in all a good listen.

I've added Estes Park as a possible vacation destination. How weird is that?

This was an awesome series, probably not the best books to listen to in the middle of a pandemic but I truly enjoyed them. I'm not sure if part of the enjoyment wasn't sharing the experience with one of my sons but I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook series. It made me want to be a prepper and get away from the east coast but other than that, I enjoyed it.

Most dystopian novels start after the event when the world is already destroyed and nearly barbaric. Smith gives readers a fresh take on things by starting with the incident that sets the world back. When an EMP strike is launched on the US, it is up to a few brave soldiers and politicians to bring the world back.
The Tracker has almost super-powers as a former Marine and native American he uses his knowledge and training to help others. His personal growth throughout the series shows a troubled young man who returns from war scarred and angry, but he grows to be a leader and a man of honor.

Poignant and amazing!

I love the writing of this author and have followed him since his first series of books. These four books in a series touched me in a heartfelt way. I grew to know the characters and fell in love with their tenacity and love of nation. Almost as if they were alive, I grew a new found love of country, my homeland, which I did not ever think I would feel again since in the past couple of years I have watched as the deterioration of my country surfaced! My dad was military and I looked up to his never wavering commitment help our country through his actions and that actions of the armed forces. The brave characters of this story made it clear to me that, even though they were fictional, there are so many out there brought to light by the author. This story had me crying at times when death overcame the heroes and when heroes were acknowledged! Thank you Nicholas for telling this all to real story!

I read all four Trackers volumes in a row and they flow nicely into one cohesive story. The author is an excellent writer, though I think I was a bit overwhelmed by the time it took to get through all four books. It started feeling a bit long to me, although all four volumes only cover a span of 3 months or so. Despite that, I never once considered abandoning the series once I started, so it definitely kept my interest. I became very involved in the lives of the main characters. Though if you like happy endings and your favoritie people to live, you will soon realize, after a major upheaval that wipes out a countries infrastructure NOBODY emerges unscathed. There is one really interesting and original concept: The Chinese offer to help America rebuild, and not surprisingly, they are met with suspicion and hostility by Americans, even when their efforts are humanitarian.

Intense, Unrelenting, Thriller

Trackers is an amazing series. It's gritty in its realism, engaging, thoughtful look at a possible real world scenario of life after a nuclear and EMO attack. I quickly became invested in a few of the characters, especially Raven, who allows Smith to the in some Native American life into the subplots of a murder mystery and a white supremacist army allying with a crime lord--scary enough even without the apocalyptic scenario. It leaves us desperately hoping our new favorite town survives, and that America itself pulls through. Incredible. And in a box set? Happy reading! My only wish was to have less of the villains perspective, but that's such a small impact on the rest of the story that is easy and highly enjoyable to reread.

I truly enjoyed the series, while yes there are some things that are over exaggerated with military and response to an attack of this magnitude, honestly if it was accurate it would not be entertaining. There are A LOT of truths in regards to the weakness of our electrical infrastructure in the U.S. and that’s what makes it scary to think about what could happen. You don’t go watch a movie to see what a “real” reaction would be, you go to be entertained and this book did just that. Even “true to life “ movies end being exaggerated for entertainment sake otherwise it’s just a documentary. This author is great and have enjoyed all of his book series and look forward to more from him in the future.

Non stop action

Although full of action, the scenes where people got shot was over the top in descriptive gore. Unnecessary in my opinion. Also, many editorial goofs. I almost stopped reading but had too much time invested. I only started highlighting editorial errors at the very end. One error is “She pulled the M9 out of her holster and palmed a magazine into the gun. She pulled the slide back on her pistol to chamber a round.” Really, she’s in a helicopter about enter into a battle and no round in the chamber, really. Another time it’s described as “diesel fuel spilling on the ground” from a ruptures fuel tank on a vehicle, then in the next page the “gas” is ignited by a flare.
Really takes away from the story. Will not read the next series. Too bad.

American Hero’s from everyday people

This is a good story of what could happen to America. It is also about how people will step up when the chips are down. Estes Park, Colorado was hit hard by the aftermath of an EMP. Two separate groups of outlaws soon began attacking the town to add to their territory. This is the story of how the sheriff and his deputies pulled the town together to fight back and keep the population from being slaughtered or taken prisoner. It is also the story of a brave senator, her son and her brother, an Air Force pilot who crashed there and of a troubled veteran, his Akita and his family. I enjoyed this story.

Awesome series. The effects of the EMP on America's infrastructure and population were well-written and realistic. The villains were depraved and ruthless, and I enjoyed seeing them go down. I loved the good, especially Colton and Raven. It was a pity that Colton and Nathan died. Still, I was a bit dissatisfied with the series' ending. Although General Fenix, the primary antagonist of the series was killed, several important questions went unanswered. Are the Chinese people friends or enemies? Was anyone from within the American govt. involved in the nuclear attack on America? Is Estes Park really safe? I hope there will be a sequel.

Could not put this series of books down! A
fantastic thrill ride full of characters you love and those you love to hate! I am not going to detail the plot here, as the publisher's releases cover that. The military action is well written and believable. The author has obviously spent a great deal of effort in researching his subject, and has left this reader quite winded after completing the series. I feel like I have run every step alongside the courageous men and women of Estes Park. Thank You, Mr. Smith for a great read!

Outstanding series Nick knows how to entertain

I read all 4 books in this series in 2 days, it is that hard to put down. I have really enjoyed everything I have read by Nick. He does his research, and his characters are truly realistic. His plots are intriguing and complex but totally believable. I recommend this series to both military and EOTWAWKI (EndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt). He is one of my favorite authors I highly recommend following him, so you can keep up with his books. Also from time to time you could get a free book.

I love post apocalyptic books. North Korea drops enough nuclear bombs to create EMPs to knock out all electrical stuff, including the grid, across most of the US.
One small Colorado town is in the midst of hunting down a killer when it happens. We follow through the sheriff and his "tracker" a native American, & his sister.
The story was good, the post apocalypes part wasn't as imaginative. I can see where it may be better in the remaining of the series, but I'm not sure I will get them. It wasn't That gripping.
