Cassius is the new kid in town, so when trouble shows up at his door, and his father is kidnapped, he has no one to turn to. Luckily for him, Sterling steps up and offers to help, and before they know it, they’re both thrown into a world they don’t understand with some very dangerous enemies.
The worst part is they can’t figure out what’s going on with Cassius. Soon after his dad goes missing, Cassius begins to change; he starts having weird cravings and odd behaviors. Cass and Star are unsure of the cause, but they think it’s somehow related to the guys that are after them. Things keep getting stranger and stranger with no answers anywhere in sight.
Will they be able to set their differences aside and work together to figure out what’s going on with Cassius? Will they be able to find Cassius’s father in time? What do you think Cass could be? A vampire? Werewolf? Zombie?
Join Cass and Star on their crazy adventure in Episode I: do you think we should’ve glued it first?
A grain of salt will not suffice; you'll need a whole shakerful to get through this zippy YA paranormal adventure story. Actually, it reads more like MG (middle grade) to me -- Cassius and Sterling are 16, but they'd ring truer as 14 year-olds. And the plot holes (hello? "forensics," anyone?) don't hold up to even the most casual scrutiny.
Still, there was an indefinable something I appreciated about it -- a feeling, maybe, that the author had truly enjoyed herself while writing it. Sometimes a book will feel flat and formulaic and somehow heavy to me, as if it took a lot of grim labor to produce. This was the opposite, very light and playful. And that title! (Which is why I noticed the book in the first place.) When its significance in the story is revealed, it is, shall we say... creative. 😳
The love story plays out nicely -- it doesn't really develop much beyond the mutual crush stage here, but it's obvious that it'll grow into something more as the series continues. I don't expect to read further myself, but young teens might enjoy this.
This is a cute YA paranormal story with small hints of 2 boys kissing.
This story starts off like BAM! Right out of the gate you are thrust into a weird and quirky small town with action happening. I liked that it was pretty action packed from start to finish.
This book was fairly graphic with body parts a miss and lots of blood so it isn't for the faint of heart.
It ends in a bit of a to be continued situation and we are left with a ton of unanswered questions!
Overall, it was a cute YA read. I liked that it had humorous moments but also knew when it needed to be serious. I am totally conflicted by the ending and wish we had episode 2 already.
This was very cute and interesting....I’m not overly fond of episodic stories but this one I actually enjoyed in spite of myself :). I could so see this as a comic :) I definitely think this make a great middle to high school story but still entertaining and cute enough for older readers. I’m not overly fond of stories with zombies(in any form) but this one grew on me and I’m hoping it all works out in the end. I think this is on the same level as Ruby and Olivia :)
I really liked this!! It's not perfect and there were some typos here and there, but overall a really fun and exciting read. I really want to know more about this world, the cult, the whole backstory around it, what it really is that happened to Cass and how they are going to fix this whole mess. The structure of the story was really good, with the cult trying to track Cass down, though, I do have to say, the story was a bit all over the place towards the end. The climax with Cass and Star facing the bad guys played out and then there were a lot of scenes that would have made the perfect ending, but then there was another chapter, and another. It felt a lot like a really long epilogue. And I don't mean that I don't wanna see more from these two, but it felt a bit wrong to me that the first step in Cass and Star's relationship felt sort of tacked onto the end, like an afterthought. I hope it's clear that this is only some constructive criticism, I really did enjoy this story, and it's a well deserved 4* book, but the story structure towards the end just fell apart for me. Nevertheless, I can't wait to read the next installment in this series. There are still so many unresolved plotthreads, I want to know about. Like
So, over all, this is not perfect and the story has a few plotholes and small strucural problems, but it's really adorable with an exciting, mysterious plot and more people should support and read this!!
I can't remember how this book came to be on my radar, but I'm so glad that I finally read it. I'm major bummed that this came out in 2018, and as I write this in 2024, there's still no sequel. There are tons of unanswered questions in this and I probably wouldn't have read it had I known that going in, but I still loved the reading experience and recommend more take the chance to hopefully, finally get the series continued.
That said, this book is not at all what I expected even though I had no real expectations going in. The cover is very cute and childlike, the story inside has a surprising amount of gore. The main characters, Cassius and Sterling are teenagers so the young silhouettes on the cover don't really match them. The cover, cute as it is, gives the feeling that this is a kid's book. It's very much for teens and up for content that might disturb. The horror elements are surprising and very well-written. I never would have expected a story with the cover to start with Cassius crawling out of a shallow grave in the woods to stumble toward the town's police station for help in the middle of the night. That's how it starts, though, and I was gripped. Sterling, the sheriff's son, is at the station hanging out with his dad when a blood-soaked Cassius enters to tell what he remembers of his attack. The two boys hadn't gotten to know each other previously in the short time that Cassius and his father have been in town, but this encounter quickly bonds them together. As the sheriff, Sterling's dad takes charge of Cassius when it becomes clear that Cassius's father has been taken. The boys begin spending all of their time together, for better or worse.
There are hijinks. There is mystery as Cassius struggles to remember what happened the night he, apparently, died and who took his father. There's horror as Cassius learns he feels nothing, needs blood and raw meat to satisfy his hunger pangs, isn't healing but can take major damage and no longer needs to breathe. His eyes also go blood red, fingernails go all clawlike and teeth become fangs when he's hungry or angry. So that adds the mystery of is he a zombie or vampire or what kind of supernatural creation? I think he has more vampire traits, but Sterling decides he's a zombie based on sunlight not burning Cass and Cass did rise from his own grave. I'd argue that many fledgling vampires have similar debuts in fiction, but whatever Cass is is honestly a new thing unique to this story. He's meant to be dead, so how and why he's still active is a mystery of its own. There's a cult, apparently, responsible for this and still after Cass, who seems to be "the key", bringing either witchcraft or demon worship/dark arts into the mix.
Through all of this, Star, as Cass has nicknamed him, is learning that he may not be asexual as he had previously thought. There are sparks between him and Cassius, who is openly gay. Their friendship to bromance to romance is so cute and sweet and I love how Star never sees Cass as the monster others might. They're precious and I want a happy ending for them so much.
But that's where the book fumbles. The ending. It doesn't have one because there were meant to be more episodes. I have so many questions and the final pages of this installment gleefully add another mystery to the mix rather than answer anything. I hate that I can't just roll on into the next part of this story, but I loved too much of this to give it less than 5 stars.
This is kind of like Teen Wolf, if Michael J. Foxx was gay. There are some funny moments. There's an undead character. The sexiest thing that happens is the characters kiss, so I'd have no trouble recommending this to a 13 or 14 year old.
The plot is good. There's an evil cult chasing Cassius, and he must confront them.
The reason I only gave this book 3 stars is because I felt the characterization was poor. The boys must be 16 because they drive, but they act younger. I'd guess they were 14 if they didn't drive. I say that because they seem so clueless about their sexuality. Their confusion drags out a long time. The 2 boys are the only characters that have more than the most basic characterization. Even there, Sterling is stereotyped as a nerd. Cassius has a broader personality, but I didn't really like him.
There is a big mystery about what happened to Cassius, which is only partially explained in this book. Other books are planned for the series.
Cassius and Sterling are just too cute! Cassius is the laid back one who doesn't worry to much about the situations they find themselves in unless there is a threat to Sterling. While Sterling is the worrier of the two, he thinks of everything that could go wrong. I love how their friendship develops throughout the book. These too are there for each other no matter what, even when the really didn't even know each other. Cassius loves to get "Star" all worked up and it is just too funny. I can't wait to see how everything turns out for the two of them, especially with the curveball at the end!
Just in time for Halloween is this great tale of mystery, secrets, possible zombies, an accusation of witchery, and a first time crush. Our main characters, Cassius and Sterling are relatable to anyone who has been on the outside and develop into friends quickly. The plot moves fast and furious, the only drawback being the adults who don’t ask enough questions of our teenage characters, but maybe they have their reasons or do they? Enjoyable read, no one should be disappointed in purchasing this tale. I’m looking forward to see where the author drags us with a look over my shoulder.
This is a really sweet love story between two boys who finds themselves in a whole lot of trubble and in a situation they're not ready for., it's a bit bloody but a great Halloween read.
There's an instant connection between the new miids in town (Cass) and the son of the sheriff in town (Star). I llike how Cass takes his condition in strides and how he loves to tease Star when he's freaking out. Cass is pretty sure he likes Star early on but for Star it kind of grows on him the more they are together, it's just surprising that Cass is a guy.
The love story is slow burning and it's the first book in the series so everything is still up in the air at the end.
This is the first book in The Crazy Adventures of Cass & Star Series. A captivating book the writing was great. What I expected from this book is not what I got and that’s okay because aside from the raw meat issue it was wonderful. I truly can’t wait for the next book. This is a YA book and aside from the before mentioned issue fits that category great. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters intriguing. The characters were developed and thought out. Cassius and Sterling or (Star) are the MC’s of this book. I can highly recommend this book as a good read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
This book was just too cute. This story starts off with a sort of mystery. The new kid to the small town finds things aren't right and knows that he needs some help. Cassius enters the police station and realizes things are worse than he feared. Enter Sterling, the town misfit, but who realizes sometimes you just need a friend. The two find themselves dogging the bad guys, discovering new things about the situation at hand - did you say zombie?, and that friendship can bloom into something more.
Although the story ends with some items wrapped up, there is more to come... I can't wait. What a great story for adults and teens alike.
This is a really sweet, engaging and super enjoyable read! It's a fast paced story exploding with action and mystery! This is a such a well written YA story with all the body bits you'd expect from a paranormal story. Cassius and Sterling are the characters we follow in this tale and they are very likeable and interesting. I can't wait for the next part to find out where they take us next!!
Waking up, digging himself out of a grave only to find himself finding his way into Star's life. With both of their lives being flipped upside down with a mysterious situation, and only being able to trust each other throughout all these trails that life has thrown at them. Star and Cass are great friends, can't wait to see how their relationship grows.
OMG, this is freaking awesome. I don't read a lot YA books but I can already tell that I'm going to love this entire series. It is keeper-shelf material for sure. Cass and Star are so much fun as they deal with their outrageous situation. I have so many questions and can't wait to read the next book in the series.
this was an adorably cute ya story... i was sucked straight into the story from page one which isnt always easy to do with a ya story. lol. i was shocked in some spots because i incorrectly assumed that since it was young adult there wouldnt be violence.. hahahha there was haha. it was just an amazing supernatural and very fun to read.
You will be pulled into the book from the first moment. Cassius wakes up, covered in diet and a tarp with no idea how he got there. He meets Sterling when he walks into the police department and then their adventures begin. I can’t wait for the next one.
Cass and Star are my new favorite couple! The book is sweet and creepy, perfect for Halloween. That said I just loved the feel of this book it full of action adventure and captures the unerring ability of teens to do it their way.
OMG this is just so damn cute! I just love Cass and Star. This might be a fact paced story but it is cute, funny and with an action packed mystery that I just love. Then it does have a it of a cliffhanger but all that does for me is make me want to have the next book.
YA has become a new favorite genre for me and this book is now in my top 10. I don't want to give anything away in this review. But, if you love YA books, mysteries, magic and a great plot, all mixed with delicious humor..... You will not want to miss this one.
