THE LAST ARROW: A Sorcery Ascendant Short Story

Heikir fights against overwhelming odds, but can one lone man turn the tide and decide the fate of all?

A poor farmer conscripted into the army, Heikir finds himself one of hundreds of archers defending the fortress of Kascunir from a savage horde. There's no end in sight to the siege, and morale quickly plummets along with their rations. As starvation and disease throttles the defenders strength and will to survive, what can one homesick and exhausted man do to end the horrors of war and the suffering of so many? Can one man strike at the heart of darkness, and give hope to the few?

THE LAST ARROW was originally released in the Art of War: Anthology for Charity. This new version has been tweaked to find a more fitting and grimdark ending.

When he was eleven, Mitchell Hogan was given the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to read, and a love of fantasy novels was born. He spent the next ten years reading, rolling dice, and playing computer games, with some school and university thrown in. Along the way he accumulated numerous bookcases' worth of fantasy and sci-fi novels and doesn’t look to stop anytime soon.

His first attempt at writing fantasy was an abysmal failure and abandoned after only one page. But ideas for characters and scenes continued to come to him and he kept detailed notes of his thoughts, on the off chance that one day he might have time to write a novel. For a decade he put off his dream of writing until he couldn’t stand it anymore. He knew he would regret not having tried to write the novel percolating inside his head for the rest of his life. Mitchell quit his job and lived off dwindling savings, and the support of his fiancé, until he finished the first draft of A Crucible of Souls.

He now writes full time and is eternally grateful to the readers who took a chance on an unknown author.

A Crucible of Souls won the 2013 Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Novel.

Mitchell lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Angela, and daughters, Isabelle and Charlotte.

Confusing to begin with - lots of strange world details evidently belonging to the related series - and battle scenes I found hard to follow. Later when we settled down with the few remaining characters the writing found the grimdark swing of things, full of gritty violence and grotty details of war and life under siege. I didn't get the character motivation that lead to their final actions and the twist is so foreshadowed it's hardly a surprise, but it's still one grimdark fans would relish. Yucky... But it a darkly fulfilling, non gratuitous way with good mature writing that few grimdark - let alone indie published ones - manage.

A Short Story that makes you want more.

Interesting read, that makes you want to explore more of the Society Ascendant series. The descriptive text is compelling wether it be a fight scene or just talk among comrades struggling to survive.

Competent and interesting, but confusing at the beginning. I believe it's set in a world and a circumstance the reader really needs to understand to make sense of it. Unfortunately, I did not have that, so I was quite at sea for a while.
