Who is the best at each position throughout the history of each major league baseball franchise? Now Taking the Field provides robust 30-man all-time dream team rosters, selected based on Wins Above Replacement (WAR), traditional statistics, awards, and post-season accomplishments. Additional features for each all-time team include starting lineups, depth charts, comparisons with numerous past authors and fan surveys, and more.
One of the most entertaining baseball books I’ve read in a long time. A somewhat analytical look at the greatest players and managers of each franchise. Delightful read.
Right up there with Rob Neyer's "Big Book of Baseball Lineups" as the best of its kind. Always good to read an updated one every few years though. Stone takes a very detailed look and provides lots of insight to his reasoning. A very fun read.
A great book for baseball fans, reminiscent of Rob Neyer's "Big Book of Baseball Lineups," which this author cites from time to time. I met Tom Stone at the Annual Convention of the Society for American Baseball Research in San Diego this summer; nice guy. This is a book you can pick up and put down whenever it suits you. I actually haven't found much to argue about, though old-timers might object to Stone's reliance on the new hot baseball stat, WAR (wins above replacement), which everyone cites but no normal person actually knows how to calculate. Anyway, a foolproof gift for any baseball lover.
