For the English, it was the end of the world as they knew it. For the Amish, it was Tuesday.
Jedediah Wenger lost his family to an Englishe drunk driver. He has yet to put his life back together including the long-forgotten courting of the Bishop's daughter, Felicity Troyer. When he's suddenly faced with the task of helping the fading mid-western town of Prosperity survive, he realizes the task is greater than the town or the District can overcome.
Hearing about Prosperity through a ragtag ham radio, the remnants of the Government sends U.S. Cavalry Captain Jimmy Flanagan to protect the town which has evolved into a symbol of hope for all of America. His nagging concerns about his family in Nebraska keep him restless where he would otherwise find contentment.
Wow I hope I can do this review justice, I Don’t like to give spoilers so I will try to just give you as much information as I can to temp you into reading this fantastic book! Let’s start with one of the Authors’s Quotes, “For the English, it was the end of the world as they knew it. For the Amish it was Tuesday”. Now let’s think about how we all look at the Amish for the most part, simple, plain, old fashion, out dated, pioneers, Christians, and farmers. And now our English counter parts, fast paced, Technology Driven, relays on modern conveniences for everyday living. So what would happen if tomorrow life as the English knew it ceased to exist and they found themselves relying on the Amish for not only survival but life skills in general as the life they once knew may never be again? I think about this book and all the things that are happing in the world, I realize Amos Wyse and Laura J Marshall could not have picked a better time for the book to come out, Pull up a chair and get comfortable I know you will love this book as much as I did, just when you think you will not be able to handle the reality of the words your reading (and believe me in truth this all could happen.) you will be blessed with the wonderful love story, then it’s back to grabbing a tissue as you are yet again struck with the harsh reality of a hard life of war. But be assured thoughout these pages this author carries a strong spiritual treads that reminds us that even in our darkest of times God is in Our Corner, which is yet again another strong Amish thread. I believe this is for me the best Amish Fiction book I have read, within its pages it contains the reality of war, the amazing force of God’s hand in love and guidance, and a love story like no other. Please don’t only read this book but share it,! It really is time to get back to where God wants us to be, and I believe this book is a stepping stone in that direction!
Authors Amos Wyse and Laura J. Marshall have written a story that captivated me beyond measure. This is a story that will make you feel like you were living the tale as you are reading it. From Jedidiah losing his family, to adding 3 couples to his household to become a new family, orchestrating a relationship with the towns Englishers when a disaster happens and the world as we know it shuts down, the Army coming to help, more loss of life and eventually love, you will NOT want to put this book down. Most people that I have read about read it in 2 days but I took my time because I did not want the book to end. My husband is a computer architect and my daughter is learning to program so I have told them that I want them both to read it. Please Amos and Laure, tell us that there will be spin offs and the story will continue.
WOW...I received this book late Saturday evening read 2 chapters and had to sleep...picked it back up Sunday evening late and finished at 6 am this Monday morning. I stayed up all night to finish reading. I had to read to the end. This is by far one of the best fiction books I have read in a long time. I was right there, with each character, every move of the way. It is so surreal. Makes you realize that this could happen any day. Love, heritage/lifestyle differences, working together, positive leaders, forgiving...the list goes on and on in this book. It is a MUST READ!!! I cannot wait for another book to read from these two authors, Amos Wyse and Laura Marshall...what a writing team. LOVE your work. Blessings❣
Oh my goodness. This book is simply amazing. The story is told in a captivating manner that will have the reader thinking this could really happen. I truly had difficulty putting it down. Please do yourself a favor and don't miss this book. Thank you to Amos Wyse and Laura J. Marshall for this thought provoking book.
As I’ve previously said, I am a huge fan of Amos Wyse & Laura J Marshall… who have a new Amish Romantic Suspense out — and it’s truly amazing!
Jedidiah Wenger is an awesome young man who, after losing his parents and siblings, hires three couples to help him with the harvest and the canning of food he’ll need to get through the winter. He has no idea early one morning when he sees the sky light up with flashes of what he believes to be lightning, that the English world is forever changed.
The sheriff in town confirms reports of power outages all across the country, causing widespread panic, looting, and rioting everywhere. Most of the people in the community are happy to work with the Amish and Mennonite families, because daily life for them is the same…
I love how the authors did such thorough research that I found myself deeply involved in the story. The characters are realistic, the action is more than enough to hold your interest and the ending… well, you’ll see (if you read it).
There’s so much more I could tell you, but I’d really rather encourage you to read the Meek for yourself. If you enjoy Amish suspense novels, you’ll love this new story by these amazing authors!
My review today is on the Amish Romantic Suspense, The Meek. For the English, it was the end of the world as they knew it. For the Amish it was Tuesday. I was asked to read this book; all these words are my own. I really enjoyed this book although it is kind of scary how possible the book really is. There are many people worried about this happening to the United States. This book is well written, action packed, and full of faith. You will love this book.
Jedidiah Wenger was working when he noticed lightening off in the distance but there wasn't a cloud in the sky. There were several flashes of light, a strange feeling in the air. He took his milk to the cooler to await the truck to pick it up. It is strange thing that the truck is late. Jed has a large farm that he runs alone. His family had been killed by a drunk driver several years ago. He puts everything into his farm. He has three couple that come each fall to help with the harvest and canning. A half an hour, later more lightening flashes appeared, still no milk truck. The next day he noticed black smoke in the distance. Why would they be burning lands now. He and his man work all morning and afternoon but quit early to go to town. The men meet a lot of cars abandoned in the middle of the road. There are no telephone wires, what can be going on. No one is working; they see a large crowd in front of the sheriff's office. There is no power, everywhere is without power. Jed steps up and tells the sheriff they will help the English.
A journey of the Amish helping the English learn to work in a new world without electricity. The Amish change their lives by moving in together to save heat and food. They must store up enough food and wood for the soon coming winter. God has a plan for a hope and a future for these people. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil. Give Him your heart and watch Him work in your life. God can make a way where there is no way if only you listen to Him and abide in Him.
For the English, it was the end of the world as they knew it. For the Amish, it was Tuesday.
A story unlike any of the other Amish books these authors have written, The Meek speculates what it would it be like if our country was suddenly deprived of technology.Jedediah started as the main character of the story. This Amish man showed wisdom beyond his years as he looked to see how their community could band together to not only help each other but also to help those in the nearby town to survive. It was impossible to not love and respect him and cheer him for his choices and standing up for what was right despite opposition.I hadn't expected Jimmy to emerge as such a prominent character, but that was also due in part to how long it's been since I read the description. Jimmy is the hero's hero, using his quick thinking and kindness to keep order in the area when Marshal Law is declared.I won't say much about the story itself - most anything I say would be a spoiler. I do want to mention, however, that the romance, while a subtle element, of the story, was quite sweet. I loved the use of the cast iron pan.For any who remember the fears many experienced surrounding the what ifs related to a potential computer melt-down at the turn of the century, whether you believed they would happen or not, The Meek takes the concept beyond simply the loss of computers and removes all technology from the picture. But it reminded me of the things many believed would happen then.I especially appreciated the way the various types of people were portrayed in the story. There were the small-minded and lazy people who felt entitled to things that they had not worked for. There were those who simply did what they were told and hoped for the best. And there were those who were driven by the example given by Jesus Himself and led the people into choosing to do what is good and right in His eyes. The Meek was very interesting and several things occurred that I hadn't expected. I really liked the way the Amish community and the local town realized that they needed to work together and appreciated the realistic way there were dissenters in both groups. In fact, one of the Amish leaders ended up being a pretty terrible, vindictive sort and caused quite a few problems. There are some very tragic events that our heroes were exposed to in the aftermath, and yet the authors depicted these in such a way that didn't drag the story into the mire or make them too gruesome. (Thank you!)It would have been useful to have a better delineation of the passage of time. There were places where a significant amount of time had passed but there was no clear indication of this. While this is not a typical Amish fiction story, readers of that genre will enjoy it, as will readers of Apocalyptic type fiction.
Alex is the mayor who caused Nick so many problems in A Daring Venture as Nick tried to work with him to shut down the town to create a reservoir from the valley in which Duval Springs was nestled. Alex took exception to this and fought him tooth and nail to save the place that was so near and dear to his heart.
Eloise is quite interesting. She was also introduced in A Daring Venture. Her childhood story and feelings of not being valued touched my heart. Her love for rules and order arose from the events that drove both her and Alex from Duval Springs twelve years earlier. And her sense of adventure is now restricted to the calculating of figures in her head. She is strong, yet tender inside and a bit fearful of being outside of her element.
One of the things I particularly loved about Eloise was the way she hoped the best about her guardian. Despite the way he ignored her and the way the townspeople and those who worked for him viewed him, she was convinced he had something worthwhile deep within and was willing to stand up for him against the entire town.
This deeply emotional story tells of the desperate battle Alex wages to save his town. The risky plan he develops is rather amazing, even more so when you realize that it is based on actual historical events. Just don't try to cheat and try to find what that plan was by looking up Duval Springs - the town doesn't exist and never did so you'll be wasting your time.
I fell in love with this town that was able to trace its history back to a visit by George Washington. (They even had a chair at the tavern reputed to have been used by him once.) And the tradition at the tavern for the young men heading off to war - wow!
As with the other books by this author, there is mystery and danger that kept my interest throughout. The deep love that Alex still had for Eloise after all these years despite what had happened to him was nothing short of spectacular, even if he did make some spectacularly stupid choices.
I highly recommend this book for lovers of historical fiction.

I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
The first line grabbed me. End of the world? A normal Tuesday? What in the world does that mean?
Authors Wyse and Marshall have written an Amish book like no other. Suspenseful. Life changing as we know it. I won’t tell you what happens; no spoilers here, but I never thought about this happening. And it could. Reading as people came together to survive a catastrophe, I was forced to consider what we would do if something like that happened. Would we come together? I certainly hope so. I also had to consider how dependent we are on certain comforts. Could we survive if our life wildly changed in an instant?
This is not your typical Amish novel. With a sweet romance, the reality of war, and a fight to survive, there was quite an emotional roller coaster to the book. I became attached to the characters and found myself encouraging them. Faith in God, even during hard times, was the constant thread in the story. Such a great reminder to me personally. Seriously, if you’re looking for something with a different flare to it, please do yourself a favor and read The Meek.
