Eleanor Morgan #3

The Ruby Blade

Rate this book
Raj once swore he’d pay any price to recover the sword he’d first carried over a thousand years ago, but that was before he knew it might cost him Eleanor’s love. Eleanor continues to battle the enemies who would see the gateways closed forever, but no treacherous elves or double-dealing shifters are quite as dangerous as the seductive vampire Raj.The chill that threatens to send her dragon half into hibernation does nothing to bank the fires of her desire for Raj—but Florence’s cryptic warning is keeping her from succumbing to his charms. Raj is not what he seems and he is hiding something far darker than Eleanor ever imagined. When the truth is revealed will she be able to forgive him or will it kill her first?

Amy Cissell is a USA Today Bestselling Author of urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She lives in Portland, OR with her husband, her haunted house-obsessed daughter, their two cats, and the murder of crows she's conspiring to turn into her vengeful army.

When she's not working or writing, she's sleeping because that's all she has time to do! There are few things Amy loves more than a well-timed pun, a good book, a glass of wine, and making calf eyes at Portugal when she thinks no one’s looking.

Although she reads anything and everything, her first love has always been fantasy. Eleven-year-old Amy discovered fantasy when she 'borrowed' her father's copy of The Hobbit and an enduring love affair (mostly with dragons) was born.

If you haven’t read this series yet, beware of possible spoilers!

The Ruby Blade picks up where it left off in The Waning Moon, except instead of Isaac being Eleanor’s werewolf companion, she now has Emma, Isaac’s ex-girlfriend, who has been a vampire’s prisoners for years. I have to say, I really did not like Emma at all in the beginning. I understand that she was tortured and still cared for Isaac, but I really didn’t like the way she treated/spoke to Eleanor. Highly judgmental, though I guess she comes from a different time. However, she grew on me. Amy Cissell got me to care about Barbie Werewolf. She’s had quite a bit of growth in this book, and while she still calls Eleanor names, they come from a better place. She cares.

Now that Eleanor’s mate has sacrificed himself for his ex-girlfriend, doing the noble thing, he has left Eleanor free to accept Raj’s pursuit. She’s taking things pretty slow because, ya know, the whole betrayal thing. She’s also doing it for her own sake of getting hurt again. Raj has waited this long, knows they are inevitable, and he doesn’t want to be a regret to her, so he is willing. I love this about him. I’m totally on Team Raj. Emma can have Isaac back. Let Eleanor have her sexy vampire!

We also get to learn more about Raj, his history and his children, one of which who joins them (Petrina). Finn is as nuts as ever. He’s got it bad for Eleanor and just won’t give up. And despite all that Eleanor is put through, she is still as quirky and witty as ever. This has been a fun series and I get sucked in every time. I can’t wait for the next book, and now that they left New Orleans, you know what that means? Bring on Raj!!! *Grins*

I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book to read. Amy Cissell has once again totally blown me away with this story. The Ruby Blade is the third book in the Eleanor Morgan series and they just keep getting better and better. In this book Eleanor is still dealing with opening the gates but she is also dealing with the cold. Cold and being part dragon do not mix and she is constantly fighting off hibernation. If only the cold would be enough to kill the desire that she has for Raj even as she still grieves for Issac. Toss in a vague prophecy, a betrayal, a crazy elf determined to stop you and it's a wonder that Eleanor gets anything done. Once again Amy will have you on the edge of your seat wanting to know what is next.

We were promised more Raj, and The Ruby Blade delivers with lots more Raj. But don't worry, Isaac's still there, too, and the cast expands to include two pretty but powerful blonde women.

I love this series because both the characters and the books are growing across the progression of books. Yes, Eleanor is still basically with opening all these gates, but those have become nearly routine, and we can get back to sparring and flirting and hating on Finn (who went from good buddy to mind-blowingly evil in three short books!).

My only regret with receiving an ARC to review is that the next book is even farther away than if I'd waited til publication day!

The Ruby Blade by Amy Cissell is the continuation of the fantasy tale of Eleanor Morgan and her quest to reopen the gates and allow magic back into the world. Eleanor, a Fae Princess and her sidekicks, Florence, a Mage, and Raj, a thousand-year-old Vampire are joined in this episode by Emma, a werewolf, the former girlfriend of Eleanor's werewolf mate Isaac, who is currently being held by the Dark Queen and being horribly tortured. In The Ruby Blade Eleanor will open two more of the gates, travelling across the eastern seaboard of the United States to do so, a country that has lost most of its technology due to the power of the magic she has released back into the world, thus far. Raj will continue his ongoing efforts to try to woo Eleanor away from her mate bond with Isaac, as the sexual tension ramps up in this iteration. Arriving late, to assist is Raj's daughter Petrina, herself a powerful vampire and mage.

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous episode of this series and was keenly anticipating the next two gates being opened. Amy Cissell does not disappoint with The Ruby Blade. The characters continue to develop and I particularly love the simmering relationship between Raj and Eleanor as she tries to deal with the many twists and turns this story takes. Emma is a welcome addition, as a character and some of the best dialogue in this book is the snarky, and sarcastic, to and fro, between Isaac's ex-girlfriend and his current mate. This is an epic fantasy and fans of magic and mayhem will lap this up, but the by-play and the strong, positive characters, especially the women is so refreshing to read. This is one of those books that is impossible to put down as one exciting scene just literally drags you into the next, but for readers with a thirst for witty, sassy, dialogue, that's all here too. I cannot wait for the next edition of this tale, where Eleanor will attempt to open the next gates - what trials and tribulations will befall these characters that I've grown to love and hate. Excellent stuff from Cissell.

Another great addition to the Eleanor Morgan series-- I really miss the dynamic of Isaac's character, but Cissell has done a wonderful job injecting Raj into the mix. One thing I enjoy is each book (so far) has included two gate openings, rather than drawing the plot out with garbage thrown in to make longer single-gate books, or short-changing the reader by tossing us a bunch of short-stories. There are wonderful sub-plots blended into the overarching story line, adding great depth to the plot. Love the series and can't wait until book 4

Each book gets better and better but really sad too. Eleanor who seems fickle still has to pick between two men but now one is a vampire. Great dialogue even though the time is current it is great world building. The group has gotten bigger and stronger but still have a lot of work to do. So much subterfuge all over the place. Not a big fan of books that leave you hanging. Also there is some torture in this book too.

Good read!

This is a fantastic series, although it is so long between books but it is worth the wait. This is a must read series. It has awesome characters, a good plot, and a mix of supernaturals.
