Me encantan las referencias, los pequeños detalles. Me recuerdan a secretos que se dicen entre amigas o las miradas telepáticas. En fin, es bello.

Desde que conocí este libro me sentía obsesionada con la idea de obtenerlo, pero nunca había tenido la suerte de encontrármelo. Ayer llegó a mi biblioteca gracias a mi pareja, quien me lo obsequió junto con otra novela de brujas. Esta lectura no me duró más que una noche, lo devoré con ansias, con fascinación. La estructura es atípica, presenta a un buen número de autoras a las que se les atribuye el término "brujas" por hechizar a través de su literatura. El libro está plagado de hermosas ilustraciones, poesía, feminismo, arte, pequeñas biografías y recomendaciones de las obras de cada autora. Mi parte favorita es ésta última, ya que no conocía a la gran mayoría de las autoras mencionadas y la información me vino muy bien. Realmente lo recomiendo muchísimo, y también le agradezco al amor de mi vida por habérselo regalado a esta brujita.

Hermoso libro como objeto, pero no tiene más calidad que la estética, la belleza de la edición. Las ilustraciones son demasiado bellas. Las amé.
Aunque me permitió conocer a varias autoras que me interesaron mucho y quiero leer, admito que los textos no me gustaron. Cada autora cuenta con una pequeña introducción muy metafórica y llena de referencias, algo pretenciosas. En la mayoría de los casos no aporta mucho ni te pone en contexto, y solo algunas están bien logradas. Otras te causan un cringe bárbaro. La autora quiso homenajearlas poniéndose en sus zapatos, imitando su estilo narrativo y malió sal.
Sin embargo, sí me resultaron útiles e interesantes las mini bios y los datos puntuales con recomendaciones. Me apunté varias cosas.
Me hubiera gustado que tuviera más info así y menos de lo otro.

Esperaba un poquito más de este libro, pero aún así me ha gustado.
Me quedo con todas las autoras maravillosas que me ha dado a conocer y que espero leer algún día para ampliar mis horizontes.
Las ilustraciones me han parecido preciosas y el tema de las brujas me ha parecido mágico, ya que escribir es como crear magia y todas estas autoras lo hicieron.
¿Por qué no tiene más nota? Tiene poquísima información sobre las autoras. A ver, no pido una biografía, pero yo que sé, una página completa por lo menos ¿no? Pero es que tienen real 4-5 líneas cada una... y de la mayoría he tenido que buscar más información. No sé, creo que con un poquito más hubiera sido un libro muy completo.
A destacar también las recomendaciones de las obras de las autoras.
Es un libro muy bonito, de verdad, pero a mí me ha faltado algo para que sea perfecto.
Aún así, lo recomiendo y es MUY NECESARIO para dar visibilidad a muchísimas mujeres que no la han tenido. Porque que estudie filología y solo haya estudiado a una de esta lista cuando son 30... dice mucho de la invibilidad que tenemos y hemos tenido.

No es una lectura del todo mala, definitivamente saqué nuevos nombres de autoras y novelas que jamás hubiera imaginado que existían. Mi wishlist de Amazon jamás había estado tan grande.
Sin embargo, las biografías las sentí muy cortas y poco concretas. De ahí la calificación baja 😕

Hermosa compilación brujil de escritoras que siguen vivas entre nosotros con sus letras. Han sido unas letras muy poéticas y metafóricas.
Me he dado cuenta, y de descubierto que muchas de éstas escritoras sufrieron mucho durante su niñez, adultez o en ambas etapas. Eso me ha provocado unos momentos de reflexión y tristeza. Pero creo que, me pregunto, si no hubiesen sufrido dichas circunstancias, ¿Habrían escrito de esa manera?, ¿Habrían creado esas magníficas historias que han trascendido en el tiempo?.

I really enjoyed the art and the "hexen text" was interesting, but I would have preferred more biographical information on the authors. Unfortunately the book concludes with a mention of animal cruelty as part of a religious ritual (page 127). To me that felt like a poor way to end the book and really left me with a negative feeling about the book as a whole, as if everything that may have been empowering about it was undone with this anecdote. Due to the fact that the book was fairly good up until that point and that it really does provide a good starting point for discovering women authors I still gave it two stars.

Literary Witches is a collection of female writers filled with gorgeously dark illustrations and a very creative way of listing all these formidable women and authors that have been empowering us throughout history. Each author has one illustration and one page with an enchantment of sorts.
This book is, in other words, the perfect Autumn indulgence.

The world needs more feminist anthologies
I liked this very much!
The only reason why I gave 4/5 stars is because I would have loved to read more about each amazing woman in this book. I think that a few paragraphs can only tell you the basics and barely scratch the surface.
As for the other aspect of the book: I loved the art style, it was perfect for this book.
The overall reading experience was pleasant but I was a little disappointed because the book was short and didn't provide us with more information. I do recommend picking this up though.

This gem of a book celebrates some of the most ground-breaking and inspiring female writers from throughout history. The title, and the book’s overarching theme, comes from the assertion that their way with words – their ability to conjure worlds and incite emotion – is in itself a kind of magic. Like those accused of witchcraft, many of these writers were vilified for refusing to adhere to societal expectations, but by challenging the norm and embracing their talent, they were able to forge their own power and agency.
Each writer receives a double-page spread. On one side, we are presented with a stunningly surreal and suitably gothic portrait produced by Katy Horan. Drawing on iconography from their work to add subtlety and meaning, I could happily display each and every one on my wall.
On the other page, we get a few short, third-person vignettes about the writer in question. Poetic, magical, and hugely evocative, they too draw on themes and ideas from the writer’s life and work to offer a unique and artistic snapshot of their experiences, inspiration, or mindset. Do they occasionally dip into self-indulgence? Arguably so. But the fairy tale-esque tone works perfectly within the context of the book’s framing. Here are a few excerpts from different writers’ sections to give you an idea of what to expect:
On Jamaica Kincaid: ‘By day, the island of Antigua sleeps like a white, sandy lion. At night, the lion opens his jaws to swallow young girls whole. When her childhood ends, Jamaica fights her way out of the lion’s mouth and swims all the way to America. […] Jamaica puts a pot of soup on the stove. It is hearty with hurt, the hurt of nations and families. She leaves the house and goes about her business. By evening, the soup boils down to a thick black sludge. Jamaica scoops it up with her pen and writes.’
On Virginia Woolf: ‘Crossing the street on a rainy day, Virginia leaps easily from one pool of consciousness to another. She loves these puddles, the creatures wrapping around her ankles in each. But before she can get to the next street, Virginia sees her own pool: it floods with rain, rises higher, becomes a deep, turbulent river. She will not survive this one.’
On Mary Shelley: ‘At night, no matter what she does, Mary’s laboratory becomes a cemetery. Lantern becomes moon, instruments become shovels, tables turn to coffins. Mary sighs. She places her hand into the enormous, awkward paw of the waiting Creature, and they walk together among the graves.’
Following several such paragraphs for each writer, we have a brief, more traditional biographical note, as well as some recommended reads from their oeuvre.
I was thrilled by how diverse this is. There’s a fantastic mix of literary giants and virtually unknown writers from across the world. I was reminded to pick up some of the greats, and discovered some fascinating new figures I’d love to learn more about. By not limiting itself to the widely accepted literary canon, we are also presented with lots of women of colour.
Informative, creative, and beautifully presented, I know I will come back to this regularly, both to pick up recommendations, and to enjoy Horan’s gorgeous artwork. This would make a fantastic gift for anyone who loves literature, feminism, art, and a little dash of the uncanny. But don’t just get it for others. By all means, treat yourself to this little treasure trove.

Las ilustraciones son más que chulas, los datos curiosos sobre sus obras son extremadamente útil aunque hayan incrementado la lista de libros que quiero comprar.

Biz o cadılardan çok şey öğrendik. Çok hayal kurduk onlar sayesinde, çok sevdik çok nefret ettik.. Ağladık, isyan ettik, bağlandık, çözüldük, eksiklerimizi yamadık. O cadılar ki süpürgesi kalem olanlardı. Zihnimizde canlandırdığımız, yüreğimize değen ne varsa bir kazana koydular. Hala fokurduyor o kazan, tüm bereketiyle!

If you want to learn about more women authors of note and what they've written, this short book can give you insight, both historical and personal. The illustrations are wonderfully symbolic. The author writes a brief comment that goes along with the sketch. The most valuable information is a listing of each author's works (prose or poetry). The only drawback is the brevity of the book, but it is a keeper.

¿Quién es más digno de este nombre que las escritoras, que con sus palabras conjuran mundos? Sin duda tienen mucho en común con las brujas: a las mujeres que crean algo más que niños aún se las considera peligrosas. Se las margina, se las trivializa e incluso se las ignora por completo. Se las suele excluir del canon artístico, pero aun así se las estigmatiza.

Es un libro precioso que nos da a conocer la vida de diferentes autoras de la historia u3 escribieron obras destacadas en la historia.
Las ilustraciones sin preciosas y me gusto como narró la parta difícil de su vida por medio de conjuros o hechizos saliéndose de la realidad.
Lo único que no me agrado fue que no ponían mucho en la parte de su biografía literal fueron no más de 5 lineas, si hubieran agregado más sería el libro perfecto ✨

FUE BELLÍSIMO. No sabía lo mucho que necesitaba este libro hasta que lo encontré. Lo sentí como una caricia entre tanta impotencia. Fue una carta de amor a todas estas grandes mujeres. Amé cada referencia sutil hacia sus obras y sus vidas, y las que aún no leí, terminé con unas ganas increíbles por descubrirlas. La reivindicación de estas grandes de la literatura siempre me llena de emoción y ansias por difundirlas aún más, para que perduren en la historia y nunca se pierda su recuerdo.

This is a collection of some super mini bios about some great female authors, with a unique illustration for each of them, a small kind of poem and three recommendations. There was nothing "magical" or "Witchy" except for the small introduction. To be honest, I mostly skimmed through it and read the bios and book recommendations. Las imágenes estan bien y las recomendaciones literarias también aunque buscando el nombre de las autoras aparecen rápidamente las obras en cualquier buscador y muchas de las recomendadas no estan traducidas al castellano... Además me ha faltado más información biográfica, aporta muy pocos datos, el nombre de la autora y poco más.

January 12, 2021Çok uzun zamandır kitaplığımda okunmayı bekleyen ve benim de hali hazırda birçok keşfettiğim yazar olduğu için yenilerini keşfetmeyi ertelemeye çalıştığım bu kitabın nihayet okunma vakti gelmişti! Arka kapak yazısında kitap okurların büyük genelinin bildiği yazarların isimleri geçtiği için kitabın içeriğinde de büyük çoğunluğun popüler yazarlara verildiğini sanmıştım fakat hiç de öyle olmadı. Hatta isim ve eser olarak yirmi yazardan sadece yedi tanesini biliyordum. Edebiyatın Cadıları birçok çeşitli okurun bile yeni yazarlar ve kitaplar keşfedebileceği gerçekten donanımlı ve farklı bir şekilde kaleme alınmış bir kitap. Brujas literarias es un libro primero para mostrar (su diagramación e ilustraciones son preciosas) y segundo para antojarse de leer mucho más.
La estructura del libro es así:
Lo primero que encontramos de cada autora es una historia llena de fantasía y misticismo que hace referencia a su vida luego, encontramos un párrafo con un resumen de su biografía y por último recomienda algunas obras de ella (ahí es donde uno se antoja).
Hay historias sorprendentes pero sobretodo autoras que desconocía y de las que ahora quiero saber más.

Las ilustraciones y la edición son fantásticas. El texto, sin embargo, deja bastante que desear. Entiendo que está hecho para lectoras jóvenes, pero aún así creo que podrían haber incluido más datos reales sobre las autoras en lugar de tres párrafos de escritura creativa olvidables y demasiado rebuscados. Las recomendaciones de lectura me sirvieron y encontré info de varios títulos y escritoras que no conocía, así que se puede decir que cumplió con su propósito.

May 15, 2023A nice collection of female authors that taught me a couple of people I had never heard of before, but I wasn't a fan of the writing style. Very disappointed with tidbits that I can't seem to find supporting evidence for and presentations of grossly racist authors without so much as a line about their ideas outside of the literary merit of their works.

Hace ya unos cuantos meses que me intereso por el feminismo literario y que mejor que empezar con su historia. Conocer los orígenes de este movimiento a través de las páginas de este libro es una muy buena solución. Y gracias a Planeta podemos contar con este maravilloso ejemplar en nuestras librerías.
Desde que leí las primeras palabras del prólogo de este libro supe que iba a ser un libro del que me enamoraría. Brujas literarias es un conjunto de breves biografías de 30 escritoras feministas de todos los tiempos. Para cada una de ellas la autora ha escrito un breve texto mágico que hace las delicias del lector junto con sus mejores títulos, todo esto acompañado de unas maravillosas y oscuras ilustraciones.
La principal misión de este recopilatorio es conocer cada una de las escritoras que han hecho parte de la maravillosa historia del mundo de la literatura. En él encontraremos historias tétricas rodeadas de mujeres fuertes y sobretodo que pusieron su granito de arena de una forma o de otra en el feminismo a través de sus escritos. La selección de autoras es muy acertada ya que cuenta con algunas famosas pero gran parte de ellas no tenía el placer de conocer. Me he apuntado varias de sus obras ya que me han llamado muchísimo la atención. Me ha gustado la manera de recomendarnos sus distintos títulos dividiéndolos en géneros (poesías, relatos, ficción...), o directamente diciéndonos por cual empezar a leerlos.
El concepto de comparar grandes escritoras con brujas ha sido muy acertado ya que a través de sus palabras son capaces de crear mundos maravillosos. El único pequeño fallo que he encontrado en este libro es que en ciertas ocasiones creo que el texto biográfico era demasiado escaso. Me hubiera gustado que aportara un poco más de información sobre cada una de ellas ya que sus vidas son muy interesantes. Aún así ha sido un placer adentrarme en sus páginas e ir a buscar luego más información en internet.
En cuanto a los textos escritos por Tara, me han parecido muy divertidos y que cada uno de ellos estaba muy bien ligado con la protagonista de cada historia. Sus textos tienen un halo místico y están cargados de magia. Asimismo las ilustraciones me han maravillado, a pesar de su oscuridad cuentan con una profundidad y una belleza increíble. Transmiten muchísimo con solo mirarlos y casan totalmente con el concepto que quiere transmitir este ejemplar.
En conclusión y para finalizar, creo que es un libro ideal para dar a conocer y rescatar a escritoras que cayeron en el olvido. Es idóneo para toda persona interesada en el feminismo literario o para curiosos que quieran saber más sobre la historia de la literatura. Una reivindicación de mujeres que no puede ser más bella tanto escrita como visualmente. Un gran regalo para todo tipo de lectores.

I so wanted to read this book!! A tribute to great female writers, called Literary Witches: of course it could be nothing but great!
And it is!
First, I loved the illustrations, my favorites being for Virginia Woolf, Angela Carter and Alejandra Pizarnik. I gathered that each of them - and the three paragraphs for each of the witches - had a link to the themes dear to their hearts or heavily featured in their books.
But, that's the first little "trouble" for me: to get the references, the reader must, at least, know a little, or much, about each writer. And, for most of them, I knew next to nothing, or nothing at all. There is a little biography for each witch just after the three paragraphs, but it doesn't always shed light on the meaning of them.
For all that, these paragraphs are prose poetry, so they are extremely beautiful to read, atmospheric, and the reader dives into the writers' universe, even without knowledge about them. It sets the tone for what the reader will find in the writers' books, when they'll read them after Literary Witches. But, I would have liked to get the references, such as for Angela Carter, Shirley Jackson or Mary Shelley. The good thing is I now want to read all of these writers and then reread this book to get them this time!
There is a foreword in this book: it is really great, but it sets the bar really high and gives snippets of some paragraphs.
Maybe it hyped the book too much for me? Maybe I already hyped it too much for myself? The thing is I expected more. Not more in terms of quality - it's a beautiful book and it's beautifully written -, more in terms of written content about the writers: I wanted more than three paragraphs because it was really good and I wanted to keep reading!
So, I think I'll get myself a physical copy of this book, I'll proceed to read all of the writers presented here, and I'll get back to their description!
