A shocking betrayal. A shattered family. One unproven young warrior. Can she stop a perverse evil from enslaving them all?

Trinn led an idyllic life sheltered by the love of her family and the mountains surrounding her home. Seldom venturing beyond the valley in which she grew up, she had little experience with the horrors of the outside world… until the world found her.

The murder of her mother and abduction of her sister thrust her into a desperate race against time and the elements. Her quest uncovers the secret her parents held and reveals her part in a larger scheme.

But the crimes against her family are only a catalyst for the awakening of a deeper evil – one bent on enslaving all living things. Can she find her sister and help stop an ancient power? Or will her own stubborn will be their downfall?

T. R. Kerby has led a life of high adventure and travel to exotic places… ok, not so much, but she has worn a lot of hats. She has been a fry cook, a trail guide, a horse trainer, and a veterinary technician as well as other less interesting things. Her weaknesses include chocolate and rescuing lost souls, mostly animals, but sometimes people. She currently lives in the Rocky Mountains with some of her rescues including her husband, two dogs, and a herd of horses. She brings her varied life experiences to the table in her books and short stories. Get FREE short stories when you join my Reader's Club. Click here: http://eepurl.com/dKgeMI

*DISCLAIMER: I know the author personally. THE TRUTH: I would say the same things about the book if I didn’t.

Beyond Darkness is an addictive story that is well written and rich in vivid imagery. A young female hero, who is just as stubborn as the warrior taxed with training her, seeks to free her kidnapped sister and avenge their mother’s death.

As the first in a series, there are glimpses of magic that set the stage for the next book. The characters are lovable and flawed. A strong debut for a new author.

Not my usual genre

I don't usually read this genre of story but a very good friend recommended it to me so I thought I would give it a try. The chapters are short and easy to read. There isn't a lot of over describing. There were a number of times I wanted to reach through the pages and punch the author in the arm because of some plot twist. It was a very good book and I can't wait for the next one in the series. Good job TR!

A DNF from me. I don't like to be mean in reviews but I have a lot of complaints about this. There is a lot of potential here and obviously Kerby is a talented writer. But this book feels emotionless and leeched of life.

It's an odd dissonance when the descriptions are sometimes on point and feel very poetic but then there's no character in the scene. Like, here's our protagonist, here they are interacting with people, and there's just nothing to connect us to them. They're not in the story. I stopped at chapter 5 about 7% in because all of the characters I met so far have no life, have no personalized observations or feelings about their surroundings or events happening to them. The main character, Trinn, suffers a horrible tragedy in the first chapter and yet I wasn't hooked and I felt no impact from her in regards to it. It was just a list of descriptions and bare bones actions that you'd expect to happen. I just didn't care.

I tried to keep with it, hoping that I could find something redeemable in possibly the story at least. But that's counter intuitive on my part. What's the point of a story without character to empathize with and carry you through? Anyway, in chapter 4 there's like 5 characters having a discussion around a dinner table and my eyes glazed over and crossed. It's meaningless gibberish. There's no thoughts, no perspective, nobody for us to connect to in the scene. So, it's literally a list,

Man A says, "This."
Man B says, "That."
Man C says, "Joke."
Man A says, "Reply to joke."

And then the chapter ends with a decision being made about what they're going to do in a situation and I just cocked my head and did not give a single care. Who are these guys? Yeah, you explained it, they have titles, and we've seen a couple of them before, but WHO are they? Your story lacks stakes when your characters aren't relatable.

As stated, I think this has potential but really, someone needs to go back in and flesh it out, pump air into its lungs. It dies in the first chapters because there is no one in this story. Just paper and letters. (Same as my review on Amazon)
