Divasendivas is one of my most favorite books penned by the versatile Marathi author Shankar Narayan Navare, who is known to his readers as Shanna Navare or simply Shanna. The book is in essence a diary of a young man called Keshav Deshpande, who has recently moved to the city of Mumbai from a small town called Kolhapur for his new job. As such, Keshav is rather unfamiliar with the new city, the people he interacts with, and the cultural undertones of Mumbai Mahangari. Keshav receives this diary from a beautiful girl called Jyoti. Keshav has totally fallen in love with Jyoti, and decides to write the diary everyday with the account of his interactions with Jyoti. Shanna unfolds the story of this adolescent love so beautifully, weaving it with many characters that Keshav meets. Each of these characters has her or his own story. The novel is interesting because Shanna portays numerous facets of human characters, with different shades and multiple colors like a truly skilled master artist. I was a teenager when I read this novel for the first time, when it was published in a Diwali issue of a Marathi magazine. I was truly impressed, and purchased the book as soon as it became available. I still enjoy reading this book, as I find it still refreshing and rejuvenating despite being several decades old. Hats off to Shanna Navare. I recommend this book wholeheartedly with two thumbs up.
