Tuna Kiremitçi (b. February 1973, Eskişehir) is a contemporary Turkish author.

His first poems were published in the magazine Varlık during his Galatasaray High School years. His book entitled "Ayabakanlar" (Moon Watchers) that won him the "Yaşar Nabi Nayır" Award for Poetry met his readers in 1994. In 1997 he shared the "Erguvan Balkan Poetry Award with the Bosnian poet Izzet Saraylic. This was followed by his second book of poems "Akademi" (Academy) in 1998.

Tuna Kiremitçi's first novel "Git Kendini Çok Sevdirmeden" (Leave Before I Fall in) that came out in 2002 excited great interest and was acknowledged as one of the most important literary events of that year. His second novel "Bu İşte Bir Yalnızlık Var" (Way of Loneliness) and "Bazı Şiirler Bazı Şarkılar" (Some Poems Some Songs) a collection of his poems were published in 2003. His books "Yolda Üç Kişi" (Three On The Road) and "A.Ş.K. Neyin Kısaltması?" (What is L.O.V.E.?) published in 2005 have met with a wide audience.

His books that on the whole treat the tragedies of ordinary people, the impasse of relationships between men and women in today's Turkish society and the melancholy of getting old with an expression that is mournful but that evokes a smile here and there, have been appraised by Professor Gürsel Aytaç as being examples in Turkish literature of "romantic irony" (Hürriyet Gösteri: July-August 2005).

Tuna Kiremitçi who studied cinema at the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts, and who has received awards for short films at various festivals is engaged on work as a columnist and in writing scenarios. Besides this in the 1990s he did work on Ethnic Rock with the group Kumdan Kaleler (Sand Castles) and put his name to the album ("Denize Doğru"; 1996 Facing The Sea) as composer and soloist. He is married and the father of a son.

I read this in its Romanian translation (Trei pe drum), because I couldn't find it in English (as I usually prefer to read fiction), but I didn't mind because the translation work was good and the novel itself great.

The title derives from a moment in time where three characters (Yakup, a young man still trying to figure out his place in the world, Leyla, a slightly older woman haunted by her past who will shortly begin a fleeting relationship with him and Halil, her husband, trying to outrun a death sentence in his heart by desperately embracing life and the present) share a car ride one evening.

While not all the questions and aftermath and the personal endings for each of the characters will be resolved and answered, the book does have a nice roundness, end-of-circle to it. I appreciated the author's voice being also very present in the book from time to time. For example, he shares with us a moment from a book reading, when a young writer complained that nothing 'happens' in his books and how he's trying to address that in this present book but without altering his style.

I actually like his pensive and allechante style and can't say I am eager to have something else 'happen'. The thoughts and the dense descriptions contain a lot of happening in themselves if you're willing to read them carefully and without hurrying (as all good books should be read).

I love the references to Istanbul (since I loved the city so much as a tourist), as well as those to the sorrows of recent history in the Balkans. As an Eastern European, it all hits pretty close to home. I found everything very realistic (including the parts about the drama unfolding in the summer camp in France for young people from various countries).

Of course, I would have loved to know more about what will happen to some of the characters and how particular events ended. The book did leave me hungry for more. For example, what's next for Yakup or what exactly happened to Leyla and Halil in their youth and why were they tortured, or what did the summer camp participants think in the aftermath of the tragic event there. But it's ok - the main lines and take-aways of the book have been drawn. And I guess it's better for a story to leave you a little bit hungry for more answers than to over-explain the s**t out of everything.

I'm looking forward to reading more from the author, I like him.

Ben hikayeyi ve anlatımdaki ironiyi sevdim. Konu sürükleyiciydi, bir solukta okunuyor. Arada, film senaryosuna göndermeler yapması da hoşuma hoşuma gitti. Bu Kiremitçi’nin okuduğum ilk kitabıydı. Diğerlerini de elime geçtikçe okuyacağım.
