Underwhelming start

I am generously giving three stars because there is potential here but I found more I disliked than liked in this KU offshoot. Hoping book two shows better development.

Who is giving this crap 5 stars???

3 percent in and I just couldn’t take the childish writing. Who is giving out 4 and 5 stars for this garbage??? If you want anime for 10 year olds in written format you can read this book...otherwise, it’s time to move on.

Have A Big Stick When Searching For The Enemy

Reynolds has a very big ship. Actually he is the very big ship. As a powerful AI , he can run the ship by himself, but he finds that he needs a crew to do some things. He first recruits Jiya by kidnapping her then puts her in charge of recruitment. Jiya smoothes out the process a great deal. I like the action and humor. I look forward to the next book.

Fun start to a new series

I really enjoyed this first book in a new Kurtherian Gambit series. Reynolds is now my favorite AI and his new crew is lots of fun. I liked the banter between the characters and all the action in the book. Very excited for the next book and to see what happens next.

A lonely ship’s AI creates multiple personalities to act as crew members. The conversations that follow are quite amusing to start with, but the novelty soon wears off and I only kept going in the hope it would end. Unfortunately it never completely ends, but at least it improves when ‘real’ people are added to the crew.
The actual story isn’t that bad, but it has many faults, at times I just couldn’t believe the authors actual expected the reader to believe what was happening. The plot seemed to rely on them just blundering around making a mess of things.

After finishing I looked at some of the reviews and was amazed at the number of 5 stars. What do these people give decent SciFi books?

Battles galore

This is a action packed book. They find a planet with humanoids and start recruiting them for a ship with no one but the AI Reynolds on board therein starts the story.

Humour and action

There are some gruesome scenes, but only a few. Lots of action, a good dose of hilarious conversations, and the reader is introduced to a new set of characters: the scene has been set! With a twist at the end...

Man, this book was really enjoyable but full of so many annoying little things. It could have easily been five stars if those problems weren't there. One problem was that the word human kept being used to refer to non-humans, not only by the AI who was used to dealing with humans but also by these non-humans who had never even heard of humans before. The words people, sentients, or organics should have been used instead of humans. Another problem was that somehow the alien species that never encountered humans before had knowledge of and even access to things unique to Earth such as vultures, cats, coffee, pizza, and whisky. A third problem was that the comms supplied by the Etheric Federation were easily blocked by multiple groups that were nowhere near as advanced in technology as the Etheric Federation. The comms should have been advanced enough to not be blocked. A fourth problem was that the AIs never really did any hacking and relied on an alien from a less technologically advanced society to do the hacking. When the AIs did hack, they didn't seem to be any more effective than the alien. The AIs should have been able to handle the hacking at least better than the alien. A fifth problem was that the AIs kept talking about nuking places. The Etheric Federation didn't have nukes from what I could tell in other Kurtherian Universe books. They didn't like the radiation and stuff. Instead they would use targeted kinetic strikes that could easily be just as powerful as a nuke or even more powerful. I don't get why nukes started to get brought up as if they were available for use. Another problem was that the AIs acted stupidly a number of times, such as assuming aliens with no previous knowledge of humans would get references to human movies or assuming that it would be faster to go search for Kurtherians while the ship was severely damaged versus spending a bit of time to get the ship repaired and working much better. The last thing that was stupid was the way the AIs searched for the Kurtherians. They just assumed anyone could be Kurtherian or working for the Kurtherians and that the Kurtherians would be easily found in the criminal underworld. In past Kurtherian Universe books, Kurtherians had been found pretending to be gods or leaders. In some cases they took over bodies of random people, but that was when they were panicked and running. It would make sense to look specifically at influential people or for religions where people said they met the gods or messengers of the gods. The Kurtherians had also been known to experiment on species and given them unnatural abilities. Planets where part of the population was somehow superior to the rest of the population in many ways despite being the same species should have been looked into. Planets where a sudden change in the technology level or physical and/or mental abilities of the planet's residents should also have been looked into. The AIs were going about things stupidly. Tom could have supplied the AIs with data on how each Kurtherian clan would likely operate could have been brought into the picture too. The search method used was stupid and should almost never get results. Human expressions being used by aliens with no knowledge of humans was also an annoying detail that popped up multiple times. This book was really enjoyable but full of little problems like the ones I mentioned. I hope C.H. Gideon doens't make so many stupid mistakes in the future. The books were so enjoyable, and I don't like little things constantly popping up and worsening my opinion of the books.

On another note, I got excited hearing that Reynolds was leaving the Etheric Federation with a ship free of biological lifeforms. It reminded me of the Bobiverse series of books, and that series ruled. I would love to see some of the types of stuff from that series happen in this series. This book was a majorly fun read and is recommended despite its many flaws.

This is definitely a case of a good narrator saving a book.

I picked up this audiobook, mainly because of the narrator, Phil Thron. It is also the reason I liked the book as much as I did.

The book has some issues, from characters to plot, but mostly in tone. The book isn't sure what it wants to be. I wonder if the multiple writers are the issue, but as I don't know how this book was written I can say that for sure.

The first part of the book is very immature. The humor is basic and swearing is forced in to try and give it an edgy feel which it fails at.

The tone then switches to a more silly style as the main character is shown to be unstable and then turns into a buddy comedy as the ships crew comes together. This section is where the book shines. The narrator is perfect at this type story and really elevates it to a new level.

However about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through, the tone shifts to a semi serious military Scifi. Lost is a lot of the humor as a bunch of red shirts show up to fill in the background. And unfortunately the book becomes much less fun. And unfortunately, the more serious stuff isn't as well done as other military sci fi.

The main characters are fairly generic. The shunned chosen one, the general, the genius, the Warrior, etc. They all have back stories like "I worked for the government before I was put in jail for a disagreement". The ship ai is really the only interesting character, but becomes much less interesting when the switch is made to remove the humor.

The settings are all very generic, too. The ships travels between galaxies and everywhere he ends up is earth ish. As are all the aliens. They all speak the same language, and understand 00's North American slang, and pick up on about 30% of 80's, 90's and 00's references. The fact the ship keeps making the references is never explained, however. He says he's a human ship, but has no human crew, and it's some time (possibly thousands of years) in the future.

The plot itself is fine, and straightforward. A ship AI has to collect a crew and take the flight to his masters ancient enemy. But the plot is so full of unanswered questions and holes, that it doesn't seem to make sense at times. Things like ***minor spoilers**- where are all the humans? Why have aliens in other galaxies heard of humans, and know Some of our pop culture references? The ship needs to best crew, so why is everyone from literally the first planet he comes across? What has the enemy done so bad? Why has no one heard of his princess? Etc.

These things are forgettable when reading the fun middle. Of the book, but when it starts taking itself more seriously, then the holes are more obvious.

Voice narration by Phil Thron, is excellent, as always! Phil has excellent comedic timing and the humorous section of the book is really brought to life by his talent. The more serious, last third is still done exceptionally well, but the first part of the book is delivered better. It has to be said that this book is actually a 2-2.5 star book. It's OK, but has too many flaws to be more than that. I rated it 3, solely on the talent of the voice acting. I would rate it 3.5 if I could. 4, though is too much. Had the tone/style been consistent throughout and stuck with the sci fi with humor, I would have given it 4.

So in the end, what we have is a mediocre book struggling to find its voice, but with amazing voice acting. I'm looking forward to book 2, I hope the writing is tighter and the tone more consistent.

Not finishing this book. Worse book of the 100 books I’ve read in this series. Not a fun book at all. The dialogue is boring and childish. The characters are dull and 2-dimensional.

I stopped 50% through the book after Reynolds attacks a scout ship without justification other than “it didn’t stop when we asked it”.

“Tactical, put some heat on their tailfeathers,” Reynolds commanded. “Targeting engines,” he replied. “They’re evading,” Helm reported. “They aren’t evading shit,” Tactical stated, and the superdreadnought’s forward guns fired.

The scout ship had merely altered coarse and put up shields.

Then Reynolds decides to board the ship they destroyed to get information.

“We’ve got ten lifeforms aboard,” Comm told them, pulling himself out of mothballs while Geroux was away from her station.
“They are apparently wise to our tactics, so they’ll be sitting right there when you break through to their ship.”
“That seems…unfortunate,” Takal mumbled.
“Show some courage,” Reynolds replied. “The plan is straightforward: hit them hard and fast and keep pumping bolts into them until they’re all dead. What’s so difficult about that?”
“I’d say just about every bit of what you said,” Takal admitted. “These are living beings we’re talking about here. How do we even know they’re hostile?”
“Well, if they shoot at us, then we’ll know they’re hostile,” Reynolds retorted. “It’s pretty simple, really.”

Some would call that defending themselves, not hostility. Reynolds is a sociopath. I’ll not be finishing the SD series.

I couldn't stop reading this!

That's very true of so many of the Kurtherian books, especially those written by Craig Martelle - but this one, especially, had me gripped from the start.

It had many of the elements of the many SciFi series, and films, that I grew up watching, especially Star Trek - I actually started watching the series from the very beginning recently, and reading this book made me feel quite at home!

I also love the phrase: 'stay frosty' that appears in some of Craig's stories, too! Lol

But, getting back to Superdreadnought, I really love the characters of Reynolds - and I say it in the plural deliberately, of course, as each aspect of his ship has it's own character - definitely something that might develop in an AI left alone too long!

The new crew that he chose are great, too, and I can imagine many a book written, involving each of the main ones - I've definitely got a soft spot for Jiya, though, and can't wait to see just how kick ass she's going to be before the series finishes! 😁

And talking of finishing, this means looking at my reading list, to see what book is next, and that is book seven of the Ascension Myth: Cloaked.

Quite apt, really, as a cloaking device is mentioned in Superdreadnought!

OMG WHO is CH Gideon?

One pf my all-time fave authors, Craig Martelle and a new name to me, Tim Marquitz, and oh, boy do these guys deliver!
Anyone who has worked on aircraft, boats, cars etc., knows they all have quirks, when you're talking a SUPERDREADNOUGHT, the quirks are bigger.... like a lonely AI who becomes his own crew until getting some 'meatbags' aboard to help out.
I love SD Reynolds...and Reynolds the mobile Captain and the crew. The various personalities voiced by the SD for the different bridge stations is a riot, I chuckled aloud more than once at the snark flying around the bridge. The way Reynolds interacts with the crew is great, too, but the mission is always at the forefront; find Kurtherians and eliminate them, with extreme prejudice.
A great shakedown cruise of a book, if you like military sci-fi, and humor, read this!

Superdreadnought 1 by CH Gideon

This is a space opera. An AI built into a superdreadnought of the spaceship variety is sent on a quest to track down villainous Kurtherians. The AI is lonely and seeks to find a career before carrying out it’s quest.
The premise is okay. The allusion to far too many inside jokes referring to current or reasonably current television shows, songs and humor was overdone. I find it hard to believe that TV shows of today would be remembered centuries in the future, let alone other pop culture references.
I thought the characterizations could have been better. They seemed superficial although Ka’nak was not as clueless a behemoth as initially portrayed.
The book was entertaining and obviously the first in a series.

Fun start to another offshoot of kurrherian adventure

The series would stand by itself but it is certainly augmented if you have read the other books in the kurtherian universe. Specifically the 21 that make up the original series if you have that under your belt there's a lot more background that's fun inside of these super dreadnought books. you really don't need to have read much other than that to give you a good background but like I said the series stands on its own you could read it without knowing the other stuff. starting with an artificial intelligence that was left alone so long it suffered a mental breakdown and now has multiple personalities feed into other worlds different aliens and conflict it's a very fun read

Weird start but gets better rather quick.

The first few chapters in this book were rather challenging for me to get through. Once I got past those the book got better with each passing page. The characters began to flesh out and mean more than the "Red shirts" you used to see during the "Star Trek" days of space fiction. I did like the idea of the majority of the characters were not military, they were civilians who volunteered. I do want to see this series continued as I can foresee great adventures.

This is an awesome read.. do not miss out :)

The flow is this books was amazing. I mean, there are 4 author's listed for this book and I could honestly say I cannot tell it was co-author. They voice is so fluid and the books is just so great! Non stop comedy and butt kicking from the start. If I didn't k ow better I would have though it was all written by Mr. Anderle and I love his Books, his voice in written words. I deffenetly recommend this book to be a must read and to read further books from these author's!

Fun and funny and highly entertaining. A good mix of sci fi, drama and silliness. I absolutely love the idea of an AI having multiple personality disorder. What a kick!

There is also a good balance of world making, getting to know you time and getting the story underway. The action scenes are creative and interesting. One good example is when our ship fires on a ship in an attacking fleet, only to have another attacking ship turn right into the path of the missile, causing catastrophic damage when our ship was firing to damage but not maim.

Superdeadnought

The AI Reynolds takes the SD Reynolds into a far galaxy, hunting Kurtherians. Following BA's instructions, he first must recruit some crew. The interaction between the AI and the prospective crew members illustrates the differences between AI and "meatsacks." The story continues with lots of action, humor, and story development. A good start to what looks to be a successful series.

Reynolds was enjoyable

Solid 4.5 star rating. It would have been a perfect 5 star if there was some dialogue back and forth with BA.
It's nice to see the AI's get their time in the spotlight. Reynolds was hilarious as heck, the crew very likeable and the storyline captivating.
That epilogue at the end was a good set up for the next installment.
I'm looking forward to more with Reynolds and his Crew.

When I first started reading from this author

I have been a avid reader since I was a child, and thought I knew about books and how they should be written and published. But this series threw me a curb its not just one story but a entire universe told by different authors and the stories they tell are great like this series starring SD Reynolds shows trust, bonding and the beginnings of betrayal.

AI with split personality

Really enjoyed Reynolds the AI of the superdreadnought. His many split personalities make you LOL. Looking forward to the journey of his interactions with his new crew members. This journey reminiscent of Star Trek is sure to be an interesting ride. On to the next chapter.

A interesting start

The first book of what I am sure will be a interesting series. I enjoyed that Reynolds kept throwing up different terms from SIFI programmes, think that it would be interesting to see if they held a film night on board showing some different shows for the crew. Looking forward to the next book.

Ready for what happens next.

This is interesting. I almost put the book down in the second chapter because it seemed childish and silly. I'm glad I didn't because that was the intent! The AI has a ways to mature and needs humans to grow, and that leaves you hanging for the next installment. I hope it is not a long wait!

Quirky AI Emotion

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the character development, the plot, the world building. I will say, thanks for the warning about the language, and it didn't take away from the story and added humor. I am very interested to see where the story goes from here.

Thinking this series is also going to be great!!!

When I first started reading it, I wasn't sure if I liked it. It was different and funny, but didn't grab my imagination right away. I'm so glad I decided to continue reading!!! I think it's going to be another great series in the Kurtherian Gambit Universe!!! Thanks for entertaining me once again!!!

Snarky ai, check; badass spaceship, check; super awesome space battles, check; only real thing I didn't like about this book was how it skipped over finer details like about the origins of the federation or how ships can travel across galaxies. Otherwise great book and I look forward to more in the series.

I am not of a scifi-opera fan so I started listening to this series and a little worry. But the story pulled me in and the movie references kill me from tactical. The John-Cab lol. But the story kept evolving in each book with new characters coming in all the time. The SD Reynolds was and steam rolling death machine that issues made the stories all that more enjoyable.
