Was he real, or was he a figment of her heart?

Lena Carver worked as her physician brother’s medical assistant, housekeeper, and cook. Maimed in a childhood accident at Christmas, she believed she was beyond love’s reach—until a dark-eyed cowboy arrived broken, bruised, and bent on changing her mind.

Wil Bergman woke in a stranger’s home with a busted leg and a bullet-creased scalp. Trail-weary, robbed, and penniless, he was at the mercy of a country doctor whose sister’s healing touch had power to stitch up his heart and open his eyes to the impossible.

Cowboys. Gotta love 'em, right? That's why I write about them and their sweethearts, whether they live in 1800s Colorado or on a modern California ranch. My personal background in rodeo journalism helps me add a bit of cowboy reality to those stories.

My contemporary books are often found under Davalynn C. Spencer.

The Rocky Mountains offer rich settings for my historical novels, from actual cities with Wild West history to fictional towns tucked into the fold where granite ramparts meet grassy plains.

I've collected three "Bestseller" labels for novellas in Barbour collections, two Will Rogers Gold Medallions for Western Inspirational Fiction, and an international first-place award for my historical romance series, "Front Range Brides."

A delightful short story that will satisfy you for a long time

When I saw the title of this book, I didn’t even think twice about reading it. Snow angels are fun and harmless, right? I didn’t even read the summary being as I have enjoyed other books by this author.

I was a little nervous, though, as I read the Prologue. Four-year-old Lena was obviously going to get herself into some serious harm and as I read it, I was thinking “oh no! Don’t go there! Just don’t do it!” And I’m happy to report that the story was everything it should be and never once did it even hint at bad doctrine concerning angels. And really, if I had read the synopsis, I would have known that I was worried for no reason.

Snow Angel was delightful! Even hours after I finished it, I am still smiling at this wonderful story.

Tay was an incredible big brother who loved so unselfishly. Though it was never specifically expressed, it was inferred that his motivation for becoming a doctor and surgeon was because of what happened when he was 10 and Lena was 4.

Lena was pretty incredible. She assisted her brother in his practice and cared for their home. I don’t think she really complained, even though they were fairly poor due to her brother’s generosity in doctoring with no thought of payment. And the incredible things she did because they were what she needed to. She also had such a heart for serving her neighbors – even those who were mostly unlovable.

One of the things I loved about the story was the natural way the author introduced period-specific tidbits in such a natural way. If it wasn’t for the fact that the things she was talking about are so unnatural to us today (such as being amazed at “an entire room devoted to washing bodies and clothes”), I wouldn’t have even realized that a historical thought was being shared. It was written in such a way that made it easy to get immersed in the setting.

With a sweet message of hope, sacrifice, and love, Snow Angel was touching and fun. And if you look very carefully, you’ll see the story come full circle with the mystery of Lena’s rescuer explained in a most unexpected way.

This Christmas novella is one you will not want to miss!

Davalynn Spencer has done it again! She has snagged my attention at the very beginning of this book, Snow Angel. She has kept my attention with an interesting and oh so romantically sweet story. She has taken two characters I would have not even attempted to weave a story around and done just that, seamlessly. Mrs. Spencer is armed with a talent and God given gift not held by many. She uses what God has given her and the results are fantastic! Blessings are issued from her pen. Go, run, get this book!

My review today is on the Christmas novella, Snow Angel. I really enjoy Davalynn's books and was thrilled to receive a copy of it. This story was sent to me but I wasn't required to review it but it's so good I have to share it. This story is inspirational and heart warming. You will laugh and you will cry but you won't be able to put it down.

In the prologue Lena is just a little girl when she sneaks out of the house to make snow angels because her brother refused to go with her. She gets lost and finally lays down and sleeps. A stranger with bright blue eyes picks her up and carries her to her parent's bed. She believes him to be an angel but no one believes her. Because of frost bite she looses three of her fingers. Now twenty years later she lives with her brother who feels guilty for the loss of her fingers. It's obvious no man will want her. She doesn't mind the thought of being a spinster but hates that her brother refuse to date so he can care for her. She not only keeps his house but works as his nurse. Tay, her brother, bring home a man that has been injured. He was robbed, dragged by his horse, and left sitting by a tree. They set his leg and treats all his wounds. He's a rough man that frightens the young girl and his dog was even more so.

Wil Bergman was on his way to Pine Hill to stay with his uncle. He planned to stay with him for a while and then get a little place of his own. The doctor tells him his broken leg is a serious injury and he will be unable to leave for weeks. He is drawn to the young doctors wife but soon finds out she is his sister. She is very shy with him but can be bossy when it comes to his care. Although he cares deeply for Lena he has absolutely nothing to offer a woman.

When Lena shares about the man who saved her and that she thinks he is an angel; he actually believes her. God has a plan for these two a good plan and not for evil. God has a plan for you too. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life.

A charming...and delicious....historical Christmas story!

Spinster Lena Carver experienced a childhood accident, leaving her feeling undesirable as a potential wife. Generous and hardworking, she assists her brother, the town doctor, with his patients and maintains their home.

The doctor finds Wil Bergman along the roadside, unconscious with a broken leg, no possessions, and a dog watching over him. Since he doesn’t remember what happened to him, there is a mystery surrounding his situation.

I especially enjoyed all the wonderful characters in this story! Lena is compassionate as she cares for the people of the town, thoughtfully organizing a festive community dinner and preparing Christmas bags for the children. All the cooking and baking she does to nurture others make me hungry for her special treats.

Wil is a strong hero as he sweetly courts Lena. I love how the romance unfolds and reveals the hurts of the past, but promises beautiful hope for the future. With Christmas arriving, touching gifts sparkle with love, and acts of kindness bless many.

If you like faith-filled stories reflecting the spirit of Christmas, SNOW ANGEL, by Davalynn Spencer, will warm your heart as you experience the holiday during an earlier time.

Favorite quotes:

The Good Book was right. There was a time for everything.

The firelight danced on her cheeks and in her hair, and for just a heartbeat or two he thought she was the closest thing to a real angel that he’d ever seen.

Snow Angel is a delightful western historical romance. It is about overcoming our obstacles and finding love.

Lena Carver works alongside her brother, Tay, who is the town doctor. She lives with him and takes care of the home and assists him with his patients. When Tay brings home a cowboy who has been badly hurt, Lena does as she always does and begins to take care of him.

Wil Bergman is a cowboy with plans of owning his own ranch. He is traveling to see his uncle when he is beaten and robbed. Tay finds him and brings him home. Wil has a broken leg and will need time to recover. As he does, he finds himself drawn to Lena. Lena lost some of her fingers when she was young and feels no husband would want her due to her disfigurement. But that does not stop her from developing feelings for the cowboy who is healing in her home. As the two spend time together, that attraction turns to love.

As the town comes together for a Christmas celebration, Lena comes face to face with the miracle that saved her from tragedy when she was younger. What a beautiful part of the story. That miracle made it possible for Lena to find the happiness in the man she has fallen in love with.

Snow Angel is a beautifully written historical fiction with a rugged cowboy, Wil, who is brutally beaten. A young woman, Lena, who was wounded as a child and still carries the pain from her childhood helps her brother, the doctor, take care of the sick in their home. While her brother is making house calls Lena tries to help Wil heal or does this cowboy help her heal? Also, the mysterious stranger who shows up to help Lena as a child. While I was reading I often wondered if the stranger would show up again or will I ever know his name. Great writing Davalynn Spencer you kept this reader glued to the story with just enough mystery flowing from the beginning to the end. God’s presence was weave throughout this book. These characters were fantastic and Davalynn made me feel as though I was standing amongst them. Snow Angel made me feel peace in my heart. I want my heart and hands to be like Lena’s, a giving heart and helping hands.
Readers, Snow Angel will be a Christmas book to read every year or any season of the year. I’ll be reading it over and over!!!!

I received a copy of Snow Angel from the author. This review is my honest opinion.

This book was a very good and fast read, I never wanted it to end! Right from the start the reader is pulled into Lena's story and it's exciting to hear how it all unfolds. I've always loved the Christmas season and this book was right up my alley pulling the reader into a time of gift giving and kindness. I love how things worked out in the end and everyone was blessed. Such a nice Western Christmas story!

Snow Angel is a delightful and inspirational Christmas read. Davalynn Spencer is the queen of Christian historical romance. She delights you with rich characters set in a simpler time. Her command of frontier speech outclasses other western novels I have read. This book is definitely worth a cozy read or a wonderful gift under the tree.

This was a sweet story! It was a western historical and was such a nice pre-Christmas read! I loved it. It was full of warmth and kindness. I recommend this enjoyable Christmas book. This was a novella length book and you won't want to put it down until you have read the whole thing. And then you will wish it hadn't ended yet.

I do not like novellas. Yes, you say, but you gave it 5 stars. I did. This is the first novella I've read that did not feel like the story was rushed and finished up quickly in the last 2 pages. It felt like I was reading a full length novel. The story is "meaty" and the plot nicely developed. I loved the mystery surrounding the "snow angel" and of course the bit of romance involved. And as always it is beautifully written and edited.

A lovely Christmas story with a sweet romance, author Davalynn Spencer has done a good job of making her characters come to life in a town you’ll want to visit.

This novella takes on subjects that aren’t easy but are handled gracefully. And who doesn’t love a Christmas story that even contains….an angel?

Seriously, if you’re looking for an enjoyable Christmas tale with a damsel in distress and a hero, then look no further. Pour yourself a mug of hot chocolate and enjoy Snow Angel.

Snow Angel is precious inspirational story about a young woman Lena, who discovers her worth and finds love with Wil Bergman, an injured man Lena and her brother bring back to health. The author ends the book with a blessing “May all that you read be uplifting”. I have to say that every book I have read written by Davalynn Spencer is exactly that... uplifting. I always know I will get a quality book filled with faith and purpose. This one doesn’t disappoint and points to an important theme of seeing God’s hand in our lives in the trials and in the blessings.

Lena Carver has always been self-conscious about the handicap brought about by an unfortunate incident that occurred in her young childhood. The way she sees it, marriage is the last thing that will ever happen for her.

Wil Bergman unexpectedly ends up under the care of Lena’s brother, Dr. Carver, when he is injured and laid up for a significant period of time. The cowboy finds more than physical healing as Lena nurtures his soul and captures his heart.

Davalynn Spencer draws a compassionate and talented woman in Lena and a cowboy hungry for settling down in Wil. Her characterization is vivid and her phrases unique and descriptive. The reader will learn the title Snow Angel has more than one meaning in this story.

If you like western historical romance, this novella is a perfect winter read for a cold and snowy night.

Loved this story!

Great story. Probably the most heartwarming one I've read in a long time. I really liked Lena who was able to creatively overcome her physical impairments to not only care for house and home, but to work beside her brother caring for patients, and help the children have a wonderful Christmas. I was so happy she found someone who saw how special she was.

Snow Angel by Davalynn Spencer is a cozy novella to curl up with in the dark. It’s a quick read, easy to get into, and still, it doesn’t leave you unaffected! I found myself drawn in by this story after only a few pages. The characters are well-written, and I like the fact that the female main character stands out in the way she does. Definitely something to get you in the Christmas-spirit!

2.5 stars.

A cute and sweet cowboy-ish romance. There wasn't much about being a cowboy in this story, but it featured one as the hero. I admired the heroine for transcending her disability and liked the fact that the hero was able to see past it and appreciate her character.

Good Snow Day Read-Sweet, Short Read-4.5
Although I noticed only one Bible verse, Micah 7:8b, in truth, the whole book reflects Mark 12:30-31, “...Love the Lord your God with all your heart...soul...mind...strength. And...love your neighbor as yourself…” The three central characters are Tay Carver, brother of Angelina, “Lena,” and Wil Bergman. All three have been traumatized by events that left them scarred; physically or in their spirits.
Although affected by past events, Lena doesn’t let the loss of fingers keep her from being a medical assistant, housekeeper, and cook for her brother. The book implies that Tay’s choice of a medical career was influenced by the family trauma experienced when Lena’s lost some fingers. Wil Bergman was a hard-working cowboy. His energies had been focused on the purchase of his own ranch, but then he was robbed, left almost dead, without horse, saddle, bones broken and scarred-up body. The story shows how three characters refused to become inward focused victims, but instead “loved their neighbor as themselves.”
What I Liked: I loved the contentment found in Tay, Lena, and Wil. They had dreams and hopes that sometimes seems distant, but still they served their community thinking of others instead of focusing on themselves. Tay couldn't count on being paid in coin for his selfless ministrations, but he did his work anyway. Lena’s trauma happened at Christmas, even so, she made Christmas a special time where she strove to minister to others via her children’s gift bags and her Christmas Celebration Meal. Wil, although anxious to be healed of his injuries, free of his cast and crutches, still focused outward toward others. He quietly ministered to Lena, like churning butter for her, helped to alleviate some of Tay’s house chores, and repeatedly reached out to his uncle, who was a testy character to many. The quiet, slow, and steady courting of Lena by Wil was well-written and refreshing.
What I Might Have Liked to See: Perhaps it would have been nice to know the Who and What caused Wil’s serious injuries. I remember wanting a little more details concerning Tay and Lena’s parents. The shadowy character of the tall man with the blue eyes was interesting. I missed some of the information about him and had to go back to connect the three incidents where he appears, once at the beginning and twice at the end. I am not a fan of the novella format, but Spencer does a good job with this genre.
I would recommend this book as a tranquil, but powerful Christmas-time story. Grab your coffee and enjoy.

Mystery - Fascinating Discoveries

In Davalynn Spencer’s book, Snow Angel, she weaves a fascinating story of a country doctor who discovers an injured man in Piney Hill, Colorado Territory during the 1800s. Tay Carver, the country doctor brings an abandoned, unconscious patient, Wil Bergmann home for treatment. In a joint effort,Tay and his sister, Lena take care of Wil. I enjoyed how the author created different elements of mystery with regards to Lena and Wil. The story opens with a childhood memory, as a three year old, Lena makes many snow angels without a coat and mittens in the winter. Near the end of the story, I learned the rest of the childhood story. What happened to Wil Bergman? Will this cowboy fully recover? As Lena and Wil relate to each other, over a long recovery period, one of life’s mysteries. love, slowly blossoms between the two people. Tay discovers that Wil is a good man. Lena discovers that she enjoys Wil’s company. Wil discovers that he has feelings for Lena. In my opinion, this book would make a lovely gift for the reader who likes old fashion charm and intrigue. I really enjoyed this fascinating discovery story.

Yes a most wonder filled story.

Another wonderful and beautiful story by an author I've only read one other book and she is quickly become a favorite author as well.
This beautiful Christmas story had my heart from the first few pages and kept it until the end. We all need this kind is love in our lives and just as Christmas approaches in this story, it couldn't have been better.
Loved every bit of this amazing story. Thank you Ms. Spencer for the two beautiful stories I have now read.
Both these stories are together in a Christmas book set. Both sweet novellas about love, romance, and many things in beautiful Colorado where I also call home for the last thirty and a half years. I highly recommend both this story and Just In Time for Christmas.
Both are together in a two story boxed set called A High- Country Christmas:Romance Collection-Inspirational historical Christmas Romance (Series:High- Country Christmases)

Snow Angel is truly a wonderfully written historical western Christmas story.
The author brings the story to life with wonderful descriptions of Piney Creek, Colorado and details that make the reader feel that you are totally immersed in the story.
Amanda Carver helps her brother Dr. Taylor (Tay) Carver, the local doctor and surgeon. She assists with medical duties as well as all the household chores. She accomplishes this even though she suffers from s disability caused by a childhood accident.
Wil Bergman is the rugged wounded cowboy who needs medical attention and finds himself recuperating at the Carvers for quite a while.
I loved the attraction between Amanda and Wil that slowly built up. Wil showed that he looked beyond Amanda’s disability and into her heart.
Davalynn Spencer has penned a can’t miss book!
