The first Jewish comics anthology featured classic and contemporary works and artists. The second anthology, “SCI: The Jewish Comics Anthology Volume 2” edited by Steven B. Bergson (AH Comics), contains new graphic adaptations of existing stories, in addition to three original tales. Bergson notes that it’s difficult to find Jewish-themed science fiction, but believes there’s an audience for the genre. I’m certainly a member of that audience and think there are many more like me searching for Jewish sci-fi and fantasy. The 18 works featured range from illustrated tales to graphic short stories with some very interesting results.

Another success (following Volume 1)! Original stories and amazing artwork. Most impressive is the variety of topics for these stories, all somehow connected to Judaism and Jewish storytelling tradition, as well as the variety of drawing style, including magnificent color illustration.

What a great collection! The re-imagining of these Jewish stories was really well done. My favourite has to be Something from Nothing although It Could be Worse and The Rabbi Who Tested his Metal were quite closely up there as well.

Some works in this collection are near-classics and well worth seeking out. Others, however, are far too flat or predictable. It’s the latter that takes a 5-star concept down to a 3.5 consistency, in all.
