THE LIFE OF CALIPH 'ALI
This is an English translation of the book Al Murtadha which was authored by Syed Abul Hasan ‘Ali Nadwi in Arabic. It is a biography of Sayyidna ‘Ali bin Abi Talib who was one of the most illustrious companions of Prophet Muhammad. Sayyidna ‘Ali had the privilege of being brought up and mentored by the Prophet himself. He is greatly revered by both the Sunni and Shi’a sects of Muslims. Sayyidna ‘Ali became the caliph after the Muslims had been plunged into a state of crisis and deep internal strife by the assassination of the third caliph Sayyidna ‘Uthman. Sayyidna ‘Ali remained caliph for about four and half years which were filled with extremely tumultuous events, but he remained firm in his commitment to the Islamic principles and gave his life for the same. In this biography, Syed Nadwi has shown that Sayyidna ‘Ali, despite being faced with extremely difficult and complicated situation, never deviated from the path of the Prophet and the three preceding caliphs. Syed Nadwi has also shown that Sayyidna ‘Ali and his family members had great respect for the first three caliphs and had very cordial relationship with them. This biography in fact covers almost the first eighty years of the Islamic history with focus on Sayyidna ‘Ali and his family members.

এক্কেবারে শীর্ষ স্থানীয় সাহাবাদের একজন,জান্নাতের প্রতিশ্রুতি প্রাপ্ত,রাসূল সাল্লাল্লাহু 'আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লামের পরিবারের অন্তর্ভুক্ত বা আহলে বাইত,খলিফাতুল মুসলিমীন এবং তাঁর মাধ্যমেই আল্লাহ তার রাসূলের বরকতময় বংশ দ্বারা আজ অব্দি জারি রেখেছেন এই পৃথিবীর বুকে ইত্যাদি ইত্যাদি। এমনই আরও অনেক সম্মান,মর্যাদা ও নিয়ামতে ভরপুর করেছিলেন আল্লাহ তাঁর প্রিয় এই বান্দার ব্যক্তিত্বকে। অসাধারণ সব গুণ, বৈশিষ্ট্য ও পাহাড়সম দৃঢ় ঈমানের সমাহার ঘটেছিল তাঁর মধ্যে।
আর ইতিহাস সাক্ষী যে যখনই কোনো ব্যক্তির মধ্যে এমনসব গুণ বৈশিষ্টের সম্মিলন ঘটে আর তার উপর তাঁর সম্পৃক্ততা থাকে এমন কোনো ব্যক্তির (রাসূলুল্লাহ সা.) সাথে যাঁর মর্তবা সর্বসাধারণের উর্ধ্বে তখন এটা খুব স্বাভাবিক ঘটনা যে তিনি ('আলী রা.) হবেন কঠিন সব পরীক্ষা ও ফিতনা ফাসাদের লক্ষ্যবস্তু। আর ঠিক তাই ঘটেছিল হযরত 'আলী রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুর বেলায়।
তাঁর পুরো খিলাফতকাল ছিল উম্মাহর দীর্ঘ ইতিহাসের অন্যতম কঠিন অধ্যায়। তো কেউ তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ করে বসেছে, আবার কখনও বা চরম নাজুক মুহূর্তে তাঁর অনুসারীরা তাঁর আনুগত্য ত্যাগ করেছে আবার এক গোষ্ঠী তো তাঁকে উপাস্য দাবি করে বসেছিল। এরকম চরম সব ফিতনার মুকাবিলা করতে হয়েছে তাঁকে। যা আল্লাহর এই সিংহ করেছিলেনও আল্লাহর উপর দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস ও চরম বীরত্বের সাথে।
উসমান রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুর খিলাফতকাল পর্যন্ত 'আলী রাদিয়াল্লাহুর সংক্ষিপ্ত জীবনী ও কীর্তি,উসমান রাদিয়াল্লাহু আনহুর শাহাদাতের প্রকৃত ঘটনা,তার পরবর্তী নানান গোলযোগ,'আলী রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুর কিলাফত,'আলী ও মু'য়াবিয়া রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুমের মধ্যে সংঘটিত সংঘাত,জামাল ও সিফফিনের যুদ্ধ,'আলী রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুর শাহাদাত,শাসক শ্রেণীর সংশোধনে হাসান ও হুসায়ন রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুম-এর প্রচেষ্টা এবং আজ অব্দি আহলে বাইতের সদস্যদের দ্বারা দ্বীনি মেহনত ও মুজাহাদা জারি থাকা। মোটামুটিভাবে এগুলোই হলো এই বইয়ের মূল বিষয়বস্তু।
মোট কথা, 'আলী রাদিয়াল্লাহু 'আনহুর জীবনী ও তাঁর খিলাফতকালে সংঘটিত নানান ফিতনা ও তাঁর সত্তাকে ঘিরে তৈরি হওয়া নানান ফিতনা যা আজ পর্যন্ত এক গোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে বিরাজ করছে এসব বিষয়ে যদি অতি সহজ ও সংক্ষেপে আপনি জানতে চান তবে এই বইটি একটি খুব ভালো অপশন হবে ইন শা আল্লাহ। বইয়ের সাথে সংশ্লিষ্ট সকলকে আল্লাহ উত্তম প্রতিদান দিন। আমীন। সকল প্রশংসা এই বিশ্বজাহানের একক স্রষ্টা ও প্রতিপালক আল্লাহর।

Unfortunately there is so much confusion about his life because of opposing stances. This is a wonderful book. Very to-the-point and has no unnecessary flowery language. Shaikh Abul Hasan does a very cool and dispassionate assessment of history leaving all dramatics and histrionics behind. Which makes for a delightful reading experience.
I usually find biographies of Companions to be tedious because of the writing style. The same point is repeated over and over again and for some crazy reason all 5 versions of a hadith are printed one after other. For every point that the writer makes its not nice reading experience to read 3 versions of literally the same hadith. It makes reading through a book efficiently/quickly near to impossible and such a boring chore. This book doesn’t have that problem.
Shaikh doesn’t repeat(thank you). Very compact sentences and tight flow maintained in narration. Love it!
Its regrettable that a great caliph like him is seen through a colored lens of propaganda making everyone tip-toe around his merits and high stature. Reading this has made me appreciate the toughness of the 30 years of caliphate. What the four rightly guided caliphs gave to Islam puts us to shame for sure. The services rendered by them are too many and its no wonder Allah is pleased with them all.
Would definitely recommend it.

হযরত আলী রা.এর জীবনী হলেও এতে ইসলামের খেলাফতের প্রাথমিক ইতিহাস ইত্যাদির আলোচনা বিস্তারিতভাবে করা হয়েছে। যারা বিশেষভাবে আলী রা. সম্পর্কে জানতে ইচ্ছুক, তারা হয়তো কিছুটা নিরাশ হবে। তবে আবু তাহের মিসবাহ সাহেবের অনুবাদের কারণে বইটি সুখপাঠ্য।
