American Kitsune #9

A Fox's Hostility

Rate this book
A Tail of Fan Service!Kevin Swift has faced many problems since becoming Lilian’s bullies, the older sister of bullies, the older sister’s jabronis, bratty kitsune, yōkai assassins, anti-yōkai militant groups, tentacle monsters, and the mightiest Celestial Kitsune in the entire world. He’s survived through it all, growing stronger and more mature in the process—at least, he likes to think so.

But another problem is about to descend upon him, one that will affect far more than just him.

The Sons and Daughters of Humanity are making their move, and neither Kevin nor his family are in any way prepared for the coming storm.

Brandon Varnell is a writer. The end.

... Just kidding.

Brandon Varnell is the author of several book series, all of which involve anime-inspired fanservice. Having been an anime nerd for basically his whole life, his books tend to reflect that. He likes writing stories with loads of T&A, shonen-style battle scenes, and steamy romances that are both light-hearted and erotic. He is also a huge fan of harem anime, so most of his books feature harem romances. If that bothers you, you probably shouldn't read his books.

This is a new world order!

Well everything turned to shit in this volume, the sons and daughters of humanity strike globally at the youkais all over the place. There were lot of personal development for the characters, Kevin, Lilliane and Iris the most, I can't wait to read the next installment.

Excellent

Action and more action! WAR! And all throughout there is friendship, drama, growth, great plot, and yes - enough maturity and truth in all the fun for us to finally see some welcome changes.

A definitive story in the series. Highly recommended.

Only four stars this time, because I felt I had to complain about TWO more books being snuck past me while I was pondering the review for Book Seven. Also, the author has restarting his irritating, for me, habit of finding an uncommon word to replace a common-as-dirt word. And then BEAT IT TO DEATH for the rest of the book.

CARMINE was the first, but it mercifully tapered off to near-normal usage by Book Three. However, it was back with a vengeance for Book Nine, and it brought its cousin, VIRIDIAN, with it. The old saying, "when you have a new hammer, everything else starts to look like a nail", holds true for an online thesaurus, too.

It's not serious, but for me, it's like a squeaky floor board that gets stepped on every few pages, interrupting the smooth flow of the narrative, and setting my teeth on edge. I hope. I hope other readers are not afflicted by this as much as I was.

A more serious issue for me is the mistaken use of something I consider to be so simple, and so well-known, that nobody could possibly get wrong except through utter ignorance. It's usually something that I've used throughout my entire adult life that is so trivial, if I can get it right, NOBODY should have trouble with it.

That's why there are technical advisors for some topics. If you're not sure, but you don't want to do anything dumb, pay someone with some creds to look for things that might slip through. You don't have to take the advice, but at least you won't be blind-sided by critics who KNOW. This is especially important so trivial details remain trivial for informed readers.

Some free advice: Hummer is the commercial version of the HUMVEE. They both have diesel V8s, and three- or four-speed automatic transmissions. This isn't a spoiler, just a form of glaring mistake that is so trivial that it never should have occurred.

Another enjoyable tail

Things are getting serious in this book, which was not what I was expecting. I had assumed that after the whole kidnapping arc we might get a break from fighting and work on the relationship and harem aspects without constantly fighting for their lives against overpowered foes. But no we go the other way, World War 3 Humans vs Youkai, where sadly Kevin starts racking up a major body count. I had hoped he would not have to resort to killing especially humans in order to protect his loved ones, but no. I would still like to see some advancements in the relationship aspects, but maybe next book, he seems to be inching closer to accepting Iris, but still a ways to go. Did he have sex with Lillian in this book..... unconfirmed. This was a good book with major action battles and humorous anime based hijinks. Will move on to the next book shortly, to continue the WW3 storyline, it will be interesting to see how Brandon eventually reconciles the two main factions.

A rollercoaster in more ways than one

In a seemingly short time, Brandon weaved a large number of relatively large plot points together. While I would not call it "expertly" since some of it felt jarring and too packed together all at once, I did feel like this book managed to weave some strong and confusing story plots together to explain them effectively. It was effective at creating a tense atmosphere with the pacing, however I feel the story struggled to cohesively bring it all together. All in all- a good, fast paced story that kept one on the edge, with a delivery that (while it could be improved on) left me waiting for the next book anxiously.

The saga continuez

Once again Brandon Varnell comes through with a great book. Though I had some issues with the content (no spoilers sorry guys read it yourself) by the end of the book I was satisfied.

Well done!

These books just keep getting better, in some ways "maturing", and yet still keeping it fun, engaging, and action packed.

As a hobby or as an escape, these books are great, well done!

A Really Great Read!!

Looking forward to reading the next book. So far the story has gotten much better now that the fourth wall breaking has become minimal.
