The tone is pretty prescribed, but the authors' love of film was apparent to me through 500+ pages of dense detail. The history itself always shone through too despite the micro focus of most sections - there's a clear narrative on the development of the movies from the very beginning. So yes it's a textbook and possibly a little dry, but if you want to learn an absolute ton about film I'd recommend powering through it.
