An odd observer in Barcelona pieces together the puzzle of the ZQN infestation before creator Kengo Hanazawa takes readers back to Japan and our remaining human survivors. Hideo and Hiromi discover something else that connects the two of them, as they head to Tokyo with a new ally. Murderous groups of human survivors are forced to band together, and the ZQN virus continues to evolve in massive ways. Revelations, new mutations, and new motivations abound in this penultimate collection, as Hanazawa's massive storyline nears its conclusion.
Kengo Hanazawa (花沢健吾 Hanazawa Kengo, born January 5, 1974) is a Japanese manga artist known for his seinen works. He won the Topic Award of the 2005 Sense of Gender Awards for Ressentiment and was nominated for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Manga Taisho for I Am a Hero.
The penultimate volume of the other Zombie Apocalypse saga I am reading (R.I.P. Walking Dead). The ZQN (zombies) take a back seat this volume as the various groups of human survivors begin to converge in Tokyo and fight one another for the final chance to escape the devastated country. Not nearly as bizarre as previous volumes...well...except for the lurking penis-headed kaiju and the human head walking around on stork legs.
Here we are, finally, at the penultimate omnibus of Kengo Hanazawa's I Am a Hero series. I was fully expecting this to be where the series began its swift downward spiral in preparation for a spectacular crash and burn ending.
I was wrong; I actually really enjoyed this volume.
First, I want to mention why I took 1 star off my rating. I did this for two reasons:
1) There are several pages of text where the cells are far too dark to actually read the text. How did this happen? One of my biggest pet peeves with graphic novels is when text is intentionally blocked/unreadable.
2) I am still a bit sore about the whole "she's a minor" thing. I was ready to ignore it all and move on, but this volume forces me to face it once again. Hideo and Hiromi get some help from a guy with a boat and he comments on their age difference. It was cringy and weird. It is also brought up that Hideo slept with Hiromi THE DAY AFTER his previous lover was compacted in a trash bin. Yuck.
Overall, not much for complaints here, because this volume was actually really good. The jokes were funny and there were references to things from the beginning of the series. And FINALLY Hideo's hallucination, Yojimbo, shows up again. Yojimbo is basically incorporeal manifestation of Hideo's subconscious and I just love everything about him.
The thing I enjoyed the most about this volume is that some of the loose ends are finally coming together, which I didn't expect them to do. I now feel that a satisfactory ending may be within reach. I am excited to wrap this series up and see how it all ends.
But I have a BIG problem.
The 11th omnibus is not in my library system. It was published 4 months ago, so I feel it should at least be in the system by now. I am beginning to worry that, due to low check out rates, the final volume will never be ordered and I will not get to finish this series.
So I am not sure when, where, or how I will get my hands on the 11th omnibus. I'll work on that.
I rated Kengo Hanazawa's I Am a Hero Omnibus, Volume 10 4 out of 5 stars.
I'm more inclined now to recommend this series than I was after reading the last volume. I would warn anyone who wanted to pick it up, though, that it is a bumpy, inconsistent ride.
WHACKY ZANY FUN WOWZAS is it really cause by the Plan 9 From Outer Space like machinations of aliens makin zombies? Who knows! I love the art so far and the little episodes outside of Japan and the bizarreness of it all. 1 more book, let's go!
Hideo and Hiromi make it to Tokyo by boat but then are separated.
This was a good volume with all the splinter groups gradually converging and both Hideo and Hiromi discovering something shocking about themselves and their relationships with the ZQNs. I continue to enjoy the portions of the book from Hideo's viewpoint more than the small groups, but I like that everything that's happened along the way is being made more explicitly connected.
Only one more volume! I hope Hideo gets a (reasonably -it's a zombie apocalypse, after all) happy ending.
Getting close to the ending which is a good thing as it feels like the quality has been going down these last few issues and the story would have been better if it had been a little shorter.
